Don't buy Southland trailers

  • I regret buying my dump trailer from Southland. They applied the finish right over top of rust and it started flaking off when the trailer was less than a year old. The gate latch is flimsy and very poorly designed, was able to open while I was driving. The attention to detail is minimal and they clearly do not inspect or test their trailers before selling them. My controller came wired backwards, the gate retaining tabs were not in a position to actually hold the doors open, the grease fittings were all dry, and the trailer does not come with a spare tire. The battery charger only works when its plugged in with an extension cord so the trailer does not charge while you are driving. If you try to use the dump feature when the battery is dying transmission fluid squirts everywhere in the control box and drips out all over the ground. A dead battery also blows a fuse which disables the emergency breakaway system. If you leave the trailer plugged into your truck it causes a parasitic draw on your truck batteries unless the trailer is plugged in to AC to charge. When I contacted Southland with photos of the finish flaking after having the trailer in use for just over a year they offered me a one time, non-negotiable settlement of $200 to buy steel wool and spray paint.

@Kailen Makepeace by the way, I see you have a 16k model, but have you hauled a full size skid steer in it, like a JCB 3TS or 3WS size?

@@VicReinz52 no, I mostly haul landscape materials. They say it has a 9 or 10 tonne lift but it struggles with anything over 3.

This is good to know I bought a tri-axle bobcat style trailer from them and within a year I've started getting rust all over the place. And I've got one taillight that pops out with bumps in the road and our roads in Manitoba are very bumpy as most Canadians know.

You should leave a Google review with some photos of the rust, warn others.

The trailer not charging while driving is you’re trucks issue. Buy a dodge or ford, they have a 12v power that will charge it.
You bought a trailer and didn’t grease it? lol we buy 53’ step deck and lowbeds and they aren’t full of grease. It’s just how it is. Grease the thing

I just bought a 2023 model but showed this to video the dealer before I did! Fortunately, all the design issues have been addressed. Fpe example, the doors are all slam locks now. The welds and paint look far better on mine than other trailers they had on the lot.

@@sasquatch3945I just came across this brand today and from what I've seen on the newer models they look pretty stout. My main draw to these is the light weight design. Being that I live in California gas is crazy expensive so every bit of weight savings counts. I was looking at the new Diamond C trailers with the new telescoping design, but these seem pretty cool. I do gotta say tho on some new marketing reviews of the 2023 models I did notice some rusting on some inseem areas, but they were parked in a dusty area so who knows. The gentleman in the video remarked on one of he's replies that the lift doesn't seem to lift what they claim? From what I've seen on the 2023 models the cylinders look overbuilt so hopefully that's not a problem. Let me know how you like yours. I'm thinking of picking up a HD 12 foot model. Thanks

@johnny4713ify I have been using and abusing it a lot since getting it. It is a well built trailer and pulls really nicely. The lift has no problem with 5 tons of gravel in it - but it does use a lot of battery lifting that much. But that is true with any trailer. NONE of the trailers will charge much from the standard trailer connections. That is a function of the truck wiring, not the trailer. To charge off the truck, you need a big, fat cable running from the charging system - just like the one running to the starting battery. I have a 20watt solar charger mounted on the box to keep the battery charged while sitting. I also have a remote battery monitor that pings my phone with battery health data. I also installed a wireless remote so I can control the dump function from anywhere. I don't see any rust (I live in the temperate rainforest forest of WA so it will remain wet for 9mos) but I assume it will rust wherever there is bare metal - such as the bed...which I fully expect to happen. The welds are excellent and I do not see any indication of rust on them. But if it does happen, I am not concerned because this trailer is not powder coated and thus I can simply paint over any scratches with a rattle can of high gloss paint from the hardware store.

@@sasquatch3945 That's awesome!!!! I live in Southern Cali Palm Springs area so we are lucky to have a few days of rain if any 🤣. I want something that can take the desert heat and I agree about the paint being easy to correct with a rattle can. I'm not going to be abusing it too much just mainly for trash and green debris removal from our ranch. I had been looking at all the big name brands, but so far I like what I see with this make. It might not have all the bells and whistles of a Diamond C or Texas Pride, but it looks to be a pretty heavy duty trailer at a great price. I wish we had months of wet weather here,. We have great weather for 6-7 months then months of being in an Oven over 117-120 days at times🥵 so the heat does kill batteries quick. The weight to load capacity is pretty awesome. My brother has a Big Tex and it's OK, but gets heavy real quick. These can carry almost twice the capacity of debris/dirt/gravel and still pull comfortably in a 1/2 truck Nice👍🏻

Hahaha😂. I mean most of that sounds pretty crappy but you took it in after 6 months of using it and you had not greased it in that 6 month period and you’re complaining that things are getting bound up?😂😂
Even if it was greased on day one and has low use it should be greased several times in that time period….
