    I wish I would've found this video during the beginning of my post-partum depression... as a black girl vegan and breastfeeding mom (very uncommon in my family for both terms to be associated with black moms) i always had to emotionally and sometimes disrespectfully defend myself, my beliefs, and my baby's health from literally EVERY SINGLE PERSON. I would even get backlash directly from her pediatrician ... "what's your job title?" he would say.... just thank you.... having to hold back tears now because i always knew my motherly instincts weren't lying to me.... thank you , just thank you!

    I’ve just watched this video and it has made me feel so much more positive about breastfeeding after being told by the health visitor (I’m in the UK) that my 6 week old baby wasn’t putting on enough weight. She’s gone from 7 lb 8 at 4 weeks to 8 lb 10 at 6 weeks and head circumference is increasing. She seems happy too but for this so called professional it wasn’t enough. I really doubted myself but this video has really helped and put it in perspective. Thank you!

    I needed to see this sooooo badly. My baby only gained 4 oz in a month and dr and others were saying my baby wasn't gaining enough weight and I felt so confident and happy with how successfully we were nursing. Then dr said I needed to start supplementing with formula and might consider stopping nursing. And I was DEVESTATED. but I followed drs orders. But I'm going to keep doing what my gut was saying all along. Hes doing fine. My milk supply feels right. Hes happy and alert and smart. Talkative. Playing with toys. Sitting up almost completely on his own. Ohhh my mama heart needed this video.

    I love you said that! I was in panic! Pediatrician told me my baby should be 2lbs heavier because the incremental weight was too slow. My baby is so smart and active and met all development milestones, but in average was gaining only 150g/week. I felt terrible when I was told to increase formula...

    • @DoneNaturally
      @DoneNaturally  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Wow. 150g/week is still a lot. That’s 5oz a week and 100-210g/week is a normal range. Glad it helped you feel better!

    I've been binge-watching your videos, and I can say you are a lifesaver!
    I've been really anxious and insecure since I gave birth and started breastfeeding. I thought my baby was not getting enough milk since I've got really small breasts. I was always worrying that I have low milk supply. Also, my baby is a bit skinny compared to others (3rd percentile), which made me even more anxious. I was on the brink of giving up on breastfeeding last month.
    I would just like to thank you for boosting my confidence. I learned to trust my body & my baby in this journey. Now, I'm on my 3rd month of exclusively breastfeeding and my baby is healthy and is growing steadily. 😊
    Again, thank you very much for providing valuable information, especially to first-time moms like me.

    I know this video is 1 year old but obviously I needed to hear this! Just had my 6 month old checkup (breastfed) and he gained no weight from 4-6 months. No weight loss, just the same. He grew in height and head growth just fine and hitting all milestones. I wasn't happy with how my ped approached the "issue". He's a happy baby and very content and EXTREMELY active 😁
    And I will add, plenty of wet/poopy diapers!

    So encouraging! Thank you. I have 5 month old twin boys. They are both almost off the growth chart (1% and .5%) and am told they're not gaining enough. They get plenty of diapers, are alert and active, seem to be developing well, head size good, and seem happy after they nurse. My pediatrician says they need to be supplemented. I've been supplementing one with pumped breastmilk for two months now and don't know if I can't pump much more (my body doesn't respond well to pumps). This is encouraging that maybe they're just skinny boys.

  • @savvyroseee4634
    @savvyroseee4634 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Ugh this makes me feel so much better. My baby was born 37 weeks and is two months yesterday and weighs 7lbs. He looks good not super chubby not super skinny but since he’s not formula fed he doesn’t gain weight as fast as babies fed with that. So he’s tinier even tho I have enough milk to feed him whenever he needs to be fed which is still every 2 hours, if not less sometimes. But just having people be like “u should go to formula so he gains more” when I know he’s getting enough milk n I’m providing enough just makes me irritated especially when I strictly want to just breast feed him. Especially with all of this formula stuff stuff going around it just personally scares me. So thank you cuz this makes me feel like me doing this is still doing the right thing cuz sometimes I do question only breastfeeding him. But I just think people don’t realize he’s not as big as a baby born 40+ weeks would be at two months and maybe just expect that.

    I love this video! Thank you!
    First time mom. Exclusively breastfeed directly from latching never pumped, so not being able to see how much she intakes has always made me rely on weight gain as main sign she’s taking enough. Born at 6lbs11oz currently 17lbs10oz at 6 months but she’s been stuck at that weight for 2 weeks when she would always gain ounces a week! It made me feel like maybe I had a sudden drop in supply but this video relieved some anxiety! I need to chill back and realize she’s just an older baby now and her weight gain may pause or slow down from now on.

    • @DoneNaturally
      @DoneNaturally  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Whoa! She’s grown soooo much…she has to slow down. Doubling birthweight is usually what babies do by 6 months and tripling is by about 1 year. So man oh man …. she deserves a little break. 😇😅

    I come back to this video all the time. I have a less than 1 percenter and I dread every appointment with the pediatrician. Weight is always a topic of discussion...luckily she has been relatively supportive so far but i know they would like to see her gain more. She came home at 6lb 5oz and at 4.5 months is 10lb 5oz. She is vibrant and happy. Very strong. Shes not all that food motivated and prefers to focus on other things. Head is growing. Is also low on the scale for height. Meeting milestones. She nurses and gets 15 oz of expressed milk alone 5 days a week (nurses 3 times a day as well during the week). Shes always been active. If it werent for the numbers i wouldnt doubt her health for a second, but i find myself doubting her health based on the numbers sometimes. Im terrified she will be labelled as FTT at every single appt. Its so hard for a self doubting first time mom..

      I just had our 6 month check up and my little one is below the 1 st percentile. She weight 11.5. She was born 6.9 pounds and has dropped percentiles every month. She is exclusively breastfed and she refuses to take a bottle of breastmilk. I am devastated. She is a happy strong baby and meeting milestones. But I can't stopped worrying. Now we started solids and i and praying she gains some weight. She keeps on nursing and refuses to take a bottle. Hi i hope that you’re still responding to comments, i’m a first time mom, and i gave birth to a baby girl she was born 1 month earlier than expected weighing 2.7kg which accdg to her pedia it’s normal, She’s 5 months old now her current weight is 5.6kg gone to 5.4kg on her 4th month, my LO’s practitioner suggested to do mix feeding, that i should add formula milk, virgin coconut oil, heraclene to my breast milk, and it saddens me because i felt worthless. that my breastmilk wasn’t enough for my child. she even told me that she’s afraid that my baby is not getting enough iron that my little one might be short.

    I hope you are still responding to comments!
    My baby will be 3 months old in a few days. She had been gaining weight beautifully (7lbs3oz at birth) and then at 6 weeks, she got Covid (did very well with recovery, thankfully!). At her 2 month check up, her "daily average" weight gain was just under what the NP said was ideal (22g/day vs the minimum of 25g/day that she was looking for), so we were to follow up for a weight check in a week. At that check up, the daily average was 14g/day, so I was told to supplement. My babe won't take a bottle anyhow, but I wasn't keen on the idea of supplementation just yet anyhow. So, I agreed to wake her through the night to feed (she had been giving me 6-7 hour stretches of sleep). Followed up again this past Thursday and we were at 15g/day -- her weight that day was 12lb4oz. She had gone an entire week without a bowel movement, which I know can be normal in a breastfed baby, but this is the first time she went more than a couple of days. She did end up having 2 BMs later on after that appointment (about the size of what she had been having) and another 1 the day after. Plenty of wet diapers all along. We are supposed to follow up again for another weight check in 2 weeks. 🤦🏻‍♀️
    She feeds for 4-7 minutes normally but seems totally satisfied. Weighted feeds show an average of 1.5 to 2.5 oz of breastmilk (I did think that this amount would have been higher since I've just been assuming she figured out how to be efficient until all of this weight business started). She feeds probably every 2-3 hours during the day, although I am trying to stick to every 2 just so she gets more calories over the course of the day.
    I never experienced this with my older two children so it is totally killing my confidence as a breastfeeding mom. I've been told I have a foremilk/hindmilk imbalance as I have an oversupply and forceful letdown... so I've been pumping off an ounce before most feeds, but no green frothy stools so I'm not entirely sure I buy that label. I've also been told she may have reflux but spitting up isn't any more common than I'd expect it to be for a baby and she is a happy babe overall.
    Your video did help offer some reassurance, but I was just curious what you thought given the specifics of our situation. Thanks in advance for any feedback! 🥰

    • @DoneNaturally
      @DoneNaturally  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would say sounds like your baby is growing at their own destined rate. I wouldn't pump off an once at this stage before nursing. I'd let baby get that milk on their own. They get better at managing flow as they get older.

    • @DoneNaturally
      @DoneNaturally  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      If poops aren't frothy or green then I agree, not foremilk/hindmilk imbalance. Maybe just nurse, no pumping before feeding and see how she does. I'm not a fan of providers arguing about a few grams a day. Overall growth is what we should be looking at, not looking at growth with a fine toothed comb.

      Thank you so much for your helpful responses! I'm so glad that I've found your channel.
      She doesn't seem to be deviating significantly from the growth curve and honestly I wouldn't have suspected any issues at all if it weren't for the NP expressing concern. As I said, she did have Covid ... then a cold a few weeks later 🤦🏻‍♀️ ... so I wonder if all of this is really just a slump from increased metabolic needs due to her immune system being in overdrive.
      Time will tell, but I think this little nugget is thriving more than a textbook average gives her credit for!

It’s easy to doubt yourself but you’ve got your instincts for a reason. Midwives and doctors can easily be blinded by “the book” and most times lack empathy. Sending you all the good vibes!!

    Thank you for all your great videos! They have been so helpful with my baby! Question: Baby is now 13 months. We breast feed twice a day, once at nap and at bedtime. I have chosen to not lose weight during breastfeeding to protect all the nutrients in my milk for baby. But now I'm ready to start losing. Next week I will probably go down to 1 breastfeeding per day at bedtime. Is there any research about the affects of "mother's weight loss" on quality of breastmilk?

      You will be just fine and so will your milk. The quality of your milk will remain the same, unchanged by your weight loss actually. Make sure you get at least 1200kcal a day for your own health/safety. Linking a couple of relevant videos.

      😊. So funny how some clinicians will argue about 500g and not just look at the whole big picture and look at the baby instead of the numbers on a piece of paper. You can easily watch a 6mo in 10 minutes and see if they are healthy or not without even weighing them. And I'm sure yours would show off how healthy they are.

    My baby's pediatrician just told me I needed to supplement with formula. I felt like a failure. My baby is 8 months. He is gaining weight still, but he's been falling off of the standard curve. It's so weird because he is AHEAD of his development and she said he might even be an early walker. He has plenty of wet diapers. I've started power pumping and scheduled with a lactation consultant, but his dr also dont notice his lip tie.
    He is such a happy baby, so I didn't understand.
    I hope the lactation consultant helps, but I am not happy to jump to supplementing with formula like she told me to.

He is growing and his head circumference is growing as well. My doctor mentioned we need to supplement. But it doesn’t feel like we need to. If you take weight out of it he would be in the 50th percentile for growth and head circumference. He has so much energy. What do you think?

    • @DoneNaturally
      @DoneNaturally  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well average weight gain is 1 pound per month. (16oz). So his gains sound typical. In my opinion, if baby is gaining something is working, and only with weight loss do we need supplemental milk. 2oz away from typical, to me, doesn't sound like a problem.

    This is something that pediatricians should relay to parents
    I have had the worst experience with my Kaiser pediatrician
    My baby suffered from jaundice and lost weight dramatically in the first week
    After this we literally kept going to the doctor every week for the first two months until I said enough is enough
    Not only did she stress the 💩 out of me with the WHO chart, she called a social worker on me, she involved the director of the hospital only to tell me that my baby is fine as long as she was gaining weight even if it’s slowly
    God! Both my husband and I literally wanted to punch our pediatrician in the face
    Sometimes these doctors instead of helping you relax and find a way to assist you, the just stare at a damn chart and come up with an analysis based on a chart
    Mommies out there, please trust your instinct and always seek a pediatrician that gives you peace of mind and understands your needs and your babies
