The movie's first teaser trailer involved Spider-Man trapping a helicopter of fleeing crooks in a big web between the Twin Towers. I think it was even meant to be included as a scene in the movie. Needless to say, they stopped playing the teaser after 9/11 and it never made it into the film, but it's available on TH-cam.
The director behind this original Spider-Man trilogy, Sam Raimi, was a well-known horror movie director before he made his big break into the superhero genre which is why there are a bunch of jump-scares sprinkled throughout the film AND the trilogy. Just letting you know for future reference with the other two films :)
10:35 the webs coming out of his wrist was a decision made for the movie in the comics, various animated series & games he creates the web shooters showing some of his intelligence. Peter has been shown to alter the chemicals in his webs to help him take on certain enemies like adding garlic to to fight vampires with Blade.
The way Peter learns his uncle's lesson is superhero 101. He failed to stop the criminal because he wanted revenge and that choice came back to haunt him. Being a hero means putting the needs of others before your own. "With great power comes great responsibility."
Ironically, that's actually a rephrasing of Robert A. Heinlein's lesson in "Starship Troopers" (the BOOK)... One of Juan's teachers asserted that authority (power) and responsibility must be commensurate. "But this universe consists of paired dualities. What is the converse of authority? Mr. Rico." He had picked one I could answer. "Responsibility, sir." "Applause. Both for practical reasons and for mathematically verifiable moral reasons, authority and responsibility must be equal." To have authority (power) without responsibility is to be a tyrant. To have responsibility without authority is to be a slave. Think of your super-villains; lots of power (authority) but no accountability (responsibility). Osborne is a good example of this...
6:54 Glad you mentioned the Super Soldier Serum because the "Goblin Serum" in this film is actually based on it. In the Ultimate Universe (Earth-1610), which inspired the genetically modified spiders and the Goblin Serum aspects of this film. Oscorp in the Ultimate Universe created a prototype serum called the Oz Formula, which was nearly identical to the Super Soldier Serum. They tested it on animals first, which is how Peter Parker got his powers after being bitten by one of the Oz-enhanced spiders. Later, Norman tested the formula on himself, transforming into a hulking Goblin-like creature. It’s a bit like Bruce Banner and the Hulk, as both Norman and Bruce can revert to their normal selves. Hulk in this universe was also created from Shield trying to re-create the Super Solider Serum. Most of this film sticks to the mainline comics, just modernizing a few things for the 2000s. It does borrow some stuff from Ultimate Spider-Man too, since that whole Ultimate Universe was a reimagined, modern take on Marvel for the 2000s. The Amazing Spider-Man films are definitely more influenced by Ultimate Spider-Man, but you can still find plenty of classic Spider-Man DNA in Sam Raimi’s films.
Fun fact: In the Cafeteria scene, when Peter caught MJ in mid-fall, him catching the items on her tray was, in fact, NOT CGI, and was actually a PRACTICAL stunt that they had to film over 20 attempts for Tobey to get it JUST RIGHT. Pretty impressive! One of those situations where you can only do something once and never replicate it 1:1 again! Also: all of the uses of Green in this film were subtle visual storytelling from the director, Sam Raimi, hinting narratively at the Green Goblin. Also also: Flash’s name isn’t actually Flash. That’s his football player nickname because of his prowess. His ACTUAL name - the one he legitimately hates - is typically Eugene, depending upon the continuity.
Favourite fact about this movie is the bit where MJ slips and Peter catches her and then catches all the lunch items on her tray was done fore real. It took 156 takes for Toby Maguire to catch all the items pefectly.
Fun Fact: They shot the scene where Toby catches all the food on his tray as a practical stunt. It took over 100 takes before he ACTUALLY caught all the items on the tray as shown on screen!
Clearly Jax has never seen a wrestling match. 😂 My coworker and I still say "Hey, freak show! You're goin' nowhere. I got ya for three minutes! Three minutes of playtime." We also do it in Macho Man's voice.
Willem Dafoe's portrayal of the Green Goblin is widely regarded as the best, with little competition outside of animation. For example Neil Ross in the '90s Spider-Man animated series and Alan Rachins in The Spectacular Spider-Man, both amazing takes on the character with Neil Ross being my personal favorite. Mark Rolston (Insomniac's Spider-Man games) delivered an incredible performance as Norman Osborn, portraying him as the authoritarian mayor of New York City rather than the Green Goblin. I can only imagine how amazing he’d be as the Green Goblin if they decide to go that route in the third game.
the movie was pretty much the first blockbuster after 9/11 so there was a deep cultural significance to it. spiderman, defender of nyc, being helped by rallying new yorkers/americans hit different at that time
It's funny to me that Peter and MJ are from Queens.. but have dreams of the moving to the big city... As someone that grew up and lives in NYC. Nobody dreams about moving to Manhattan 😂😂... It's literally a 20 minute train ride from damn near everywhere except Staten Island... I love the movie and the reaction.. that part has just always been funny to me
Wilem DeFoe was the perfect Green Goblin, no one could have done better. Telling my age, I remember reading the original comics of most of the superheroes including Spiderman, and I believe this captures the spirit of the comic books more than the others.
In almost every instance in the comics, Spider-Man's webs come from a pair of mechanical wristbands that Peter builds. This was done to show Peter's intelligence and proficency in advanced technology. But when development for the movie began, they felt that casual movie audiences wouldn't find it credible that a high school kid with virtually no money could build something so advanced. So they changed it to make the webs organically shoot out from his wrists as one of his superpowers. They did make mechanical web shooter props for the movie, but the change in the script from mechanical to organic webs meant that the props were never used.
Green Goblins speech on the roof that you didnt include was so good, one of my favourite villan speeches, the one about the one thing they love more than a hero, is to see a hero fail, fall, die trying. and eventually they will hate you.
In the MCU back to Spider-Man's introduction in Civil Wat, Peter says "When you can do the things that i can, but you don't and then the bad things happen, they happen because of you..." and here we have what happened to uncle Ben. Just wanted to point that out for you, because it's been a while since you watched Civil War.
On Peter's strength: in one of the older Marvel Universe guides, it's reported that Peter can bench press 25 tons, and a lot more when he gets desperate. MCU Peter gets a building dropped on him by Liz Allen's dad (the MCU Vulture), and manages to lift it enough to get himself out from under it. All three Spider-Men have comparable strength, though the various experiences in their lives will have given each of them a lot of nuance (MCU Peter's Spider-sense isn't as developed as the other two veteran Spider-Men, for example).
When this movie came out in 2002, it was the Spider-Man film I had been waiting for since I was 7 years old. I swallowed my little quibbles about things like the organic webbing and the fact that Peter was meeting Mary Jane with nary a mention of Gwen Stacey. Then the Andrew Garfield franchise came out and I was wowed again. They fixed many of the issues of the Sam Raimi run and brought a lot more of Spidey's character back. We were still using 20 year olds for high schoolers, but what could they do? Then that one went sideways. When Tom Holland showed up in Civil War and Homecoming, I was mind blown. He was everything you want in a Spider-Man origin, and even with the story and supporting characters tweaked and shifted around, it felt more like the actual spirit of the hero than ever. I loved it. I still love it. Tom Holland forever. ❤
fun fact: the actor who played Uncle Ben (Glen Ford), was also Pa Kent in 1978's Superman The Movie... both characters died in the movie :P ;) .. RIP Glen.
22:39 Osborn developed split personality disorder with the experiment that made him the goblin. The goblin takes over and he has no clue what he’s doing at that time
Oh yeah Spider-Man always has to hold back, there was a comic run where another one of his villains Scorpion had his entire bottom jaw taken clean off with a single punch, a lot of people don’t realize just how strong Spider-Man is😂 greatly enjoyed the reaction😃 can’t wait for Spider-Man 2 and 3
I remember this was the first movie I saw in the cinema,I didn't like it very much, but I decided to go just because it was Spider-Man. MJ wasn't Peter's first girlfriend in the comics, but the movie was still pretty faithful. It's the first time I've seen someone get scared watching this movie, but I saw a lot of faces when the spiders appeared. The actor who plays JJ in this movie plays JJ in No Way Home too and in the comics, Spider-Man hates the spider song. Peter Parker's saga of sadness, guilt and poverty is just beginning. Remember children, when you have the power to change the world for the better you have a moral obligation to do so, because with great power comes great responsibility.
Best part about this movie is the organic way the spider joins with him. The webs and the barbs on his fingers for crawling makes so much more sense. What are the odds that the one person who has been given these spider attributes is also genius enough to invent a web fluid? Hell, he could sell that web fluid and become a trillionaire. Nope he uses it to swing around the city and trap bad guys. Just once i want to see someone take that webbing left behind and reverse engineer it and become rich.
Such a great movie. Still remember trying to convince my friend to go see it lol. He's like it's Spider-Man and it's gonna be stupid probably. Spidey 2 is my fav though. Can't wait for that. Great reaction as always Jax
Each of the Spiderman movies had their differences and all were pretty good. Tobey brought the "nerd" side of Spidey,Andrew the acrobatic side and Tom Holland the funny side.

If Ben knew about the life-or-death battles Peter would face as Spider-Man, he would have been wise enough to choose his words more carefully.
I haven't watched this movie in quite some time. Seeing how young everyone is makes me realize how long ago it was made. haha Also, the real question is if Jameson lied to protect Peter, or to protect the newspaper sales that he makes from those pictures of Spider-Man. ;)
11:20 Yeah the reason why he's so strong is because spiders are very strong. The strongest spider in the world can lift 160 times its own weight. Peter Parker probably weighs somewhere between 155 to 175 meaning he can lift anywhere between 24,000 to 28,000 pounds
My first Pg-13 movie when I was 3 years old. Willem Dafoe scarred me for life but still think he's Marvels best villain! Also first movie to EVER make 100+ million dollars in a weekend!
You need to watch the late 60's Spiderman cartoons. The theme song is a classic. I like the ending of where MJ gets friend zoned the little tart. It was to keep her safe from harm and to protect his identity.
This is the same thing I did with my daughters. They wanted to see No way home, but told them they had to watch them all first. I grew up with Tobey Maguire and only watched them before we binged them all. Not a huge fan of Tom’s movies but the last one is amazing!

Marvel 101; Spidy canonical uses wed shooters, but Sam Raimi chose to change it to an organic shooter and also changed how Peter's wall crawling works. Sam Raimi is best known for horror movies such as The Evil Dead franchise.
To be fair, at the beginning Harry told Peter to go talk to MJ. Peter said no way, you talk to her. And Harry jumped at the opportunity. Seemed fair to me
I was wondering if you would recognize the guy who played the wrestler Bone-saw MacGraw, but apparently you didn't. That was WWE legend Randy 'Macho Man' Savage. Sadly, he passed away in 2012. The character he played was much like his WWE persona, a larger-than-life wrestler.
Though darker in tone and more gruesome, you should definitely check out Sam Raimi's first superhero movie - Darkman, with Liam Neeson and Francis McDormand. And look for the Bruce Campbell cameo in any Raimi movie (here he's the wrestling announcer who names Spiderman)
Tobey is the only movie version with organic webshooters. It's the only time I'm not bother by Peter's poverty (normally he is sitting on the patent for one of the most miraculous adhesives in fiction 😅). It ties into my major issue with the Tom Spidey - he is fully funded by a billionaire and doesn't have to struggle with poverty
Also, Harry and MJ never kissed 'on screen', but we know they were *dating*, so there had to be some behind closed door stuff going on. (Just wait for the next movie)
Fun fact Jax! When Peter is coming into the ring after being introduced as the Amazing Spiderman, they were taking out of the ring a dude with a mask, on a stretcher right? That dude was Jack Murdock. Matt Murdock's father. Matt Murdock is the Daredevil! That was Daredevil's dad! U can tell by the mask with the horns! (which is what inspired Daredevil to pick a devil for his persona)
Jax--now you can listen to the weird al Yankovic song that goes with this movie. It's a parody of a billy joel song. It's called ode to a superhero. It's off Al's poodle hat album.
So many jump scares and no Lamby to help protect you?! Must be taking a vacation! 🤣

This is also the first movie to feature the Twin Towers in post 9/11. They should've kept the helicopter/bank robbery scene. I miss my Twin Towers.
The movie's first teaser trailer involved Spider-Man trapping a helicopter of fleeing crooks in a big web between the Twin Towers. I think it was even meant to be included as a scene in the movie. Peter about to take a picture of a spider.
Jax: "Is the flash gonna bother it?"
Flash nudges Peter.
Me: "Flash bothers everyone."
Hey Jax. Saw Ted Lasso is on your Patreon. Will it be coming to TH-cam?
This is such an awesome journey!
And Tobey Maguire is definitely my Spider-Man!
Yes, this comic book movie director is GREAT with jump scares. He should maybe dabble in some horror movies.
the announcer of the wrestling match is ash from evil dead
Happy jax day! btw will you upload ted lasso in youtube??
41:53 Adorable 😊
We get to see Toby Maguire's MTV Movie Award best Kiss winning kiss.
No Lamby? He must be in training to become Spider-Man’s sidekick. He’ll be awesome. 😁
Jax--now you can listen to the weird al Yankovic song that goes with this movie. It's a parody of a billy joel song. It's called ode to a superhero. It's off Al's poodle hat album.
