    Two questions for you Jared
    Foliar fertilizers-what are you using?
    Have you tried Diesel Exhaust Fluid DEF for any plot fertilizing? It’s basically Urea as per the label, it would seem to be a very inexpensive way to get nitrogen on the ground but I have no idea on how to calculate a per acre application rate?
    I did use it with a homemade sprayer added to the front of each planter unit, my corn planter, my corn does look fantastic this year but it’s also been a banner weather growing year. Any thoughts you might have would be appreciated thanks

    This is the way I've been doing all my small plots the last three years. Only difference is I spray during the dry/hot part of early to mid July. I come back 2 weeks later to broadcast the seed and use a bush hog to mow down the dead vegetation over the new seed which also works the seed down to the soil.

    You should spray walking backwards, that way you're not marinating your feet and shins in chemical

      Well you want to see where you're going in case of rocks or sticks. He should be in full PPE is the bigger issue.

    Had you done soil tests, or were you applying the fertilizer as a good balanced ratio without testing?

    Did I worry you that you sprayed right before a rain? Do they recommend gly being rain proof after an hour or so? Great video

      In my experience, as long as I've given it 20-30 minutes prior to rain, I have still gotten a good kill with glyphosate. Thanks!

    What seeds can you do this with vs what not?

    • @jaredmills
      @jaredmills  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      In general, the smaller the better just because you're really only relying on rain to work the seed just into the ground. Seeds such as clover, chicory, turnips, etc. When you start talking bigger seeds, those like to be a little deeper into the soil typically. Not saying you can't get decent germination out of those, but it's not going to be as good as the smaller seeds.

    Good use of time Jared. Thanks for sharing! I tried Imox select herbicide as an attempt at a one-step grass and broadleaf killer in my clover plots and it did great on the grass, but not broadleaf weeds. Back to 2,4D-B as you suggested before. 👍🏼

    This is the same approach/system I take. If I can do it…ANYBODY can. 1/4 acres of brassicas last season had deer in it 24/7 until they ate it the ground 😂

    • @jaredmills
      @jaredmills  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Agreed. It's as simple as it gets. It requires the right amount of rain, but if you get good seed to soil contact, it's about as good as any other method with those small seeds.

      @@jaredmills 1st week of August feels a little early to me, any particular reason? Your frost date may be sooner than mine. I’ll be trying to hold out until last week of August or 1st of September.

    • @jaredmills
      @jaredmills  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@Leehealy-wheninthewoods Yeah I'm not sure where you're located, I am in Iowa. My ideal planting time is the first week of August here for straight brassicas. However, I give myself a pretty big window, roughly July 20th to August 20th, and try to focus on planting based on the weather forecast at that point and not necessarily a calendar date. Also, my average first frost date is in the second week of October.

    Hey jared as always awesome video. So u say as long as we spray with a contact killer we can seed immediately. Is 2-4-d considered a contact killer lol. And the stuff u use the glysofate or however u spell it lol, is that the “scientific name” for the spray or are there different types of that? And for the record u make this plot planting and growing interesting. Ur an inspiration for sure. Thanks.

    • @jaredmills
      @jaredmills  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thanks John, I appreciate you watching. 2,4-d unfortunately will have some residual associated with it, so if you include that, you'll want to wait to seed. It can depend on the weather but to be safe I'd say 10-14 days in my experience. And when I say glyphosate, it's Roundup. Glyphosate is the active ingredient. Hope that helps.
