I found a shed similar to that a few years ago from one of my target bucks. It also had roughly an inch of extra bone coming off the pedicle. The buck ended up putting on more mass and some junk points around the base of the antler the following year. As you know deer are pretty tough, that buck could put on a very unique rack next year. Best of luck this offseason and thanks for making great content for your viewers.
I know this is an older one but just hearing you talk about putting off the ground is true because I was in a killer spot right under my stand by rope had broke to pull my bow up so I didn't even get in the stand and I had these nose come in my mom what you little ones and they was probably 28 yards at one time but they had me pinned I mean and I had my phone standing up on my leg ready to go do something was up I really believe you should try scent look
I agree that scent lingered around from being on the ground even though cedars have a strong smell. They can always pick up on the foot path to that spot as you well know. Good luck next season.
Well it will certainly be ineresting to see how he grows. I had a pleasnt suprise i found a year old shed of a monster we didnt know exists. Hes got it all inside points outside pouits and a drop tine. Its pretty chewed up but you can tell what he was. I had to pinch myself to make sure i was still in michigan and i didnt walk through a portal and end up in iowa. Hope all is well thanks for sharing Jared.
Hey Jared, over here in Illinois I have found antlers like that and the buck ended up smaller the next year but I have also found them like that and they grew an extra 20 inches. I have no clue what the reasons. Hope he grows to a monster for ya. Thanks for the video.
I missed a 9.5 yr old last season. The arrow sailed right under him at 35 yrds. He never flinched from bow string thud. My bow is not fast either. The week after I missed him, he showed up with a busted rear leg. He only showed 1 time per months the rest of the winter. I have him on camera alive and growing similar shape antlers, even with a bad bowed leg.
Excellent content, so much thought and work goes into the area your looking to hunt, whitetail have so many keen senses, im sure I've given myself up many times where i dont even put eyes on a whitetail, they knew something was off long before they got close to my location, Majestic animal no doubt, im sure they outsmart many predators out in the wild, by far the whitetail intrigues me more then any other animal on this planet, not sure why ,just always had that feeling towards the whitetail. Thank you, for great post hunting season stories, very cool.
One of the oldest biologist I know, you might could contact about the antler, is Dr. Grant Woods. He's been at it a long time. As to the big buck you're still after, I hope you can get some pictures of him this year as he's putting his new headgear on. Thanks for sharing the video with all us hunters, and stay safe out there!
That's encouraging. It's probably hard to say what's going to happen from deer to deer. I've heard of stories similar to yours all the way to guys finding the buck dead not far from the shed antler.
I'm not an expert by any means. But just listening to several other popular hunters talk about it, my understanding is that they typically will grow a nontypical antler on that side when part of the skull comes off with the antler. And then the following year as long as it falls off normal it could come back regular the next. I've heard that from several different people. So it's not from me but just passing what I've heard along. That was pretty deep, so hopefully he did make it! Interesting to see what he grows this year.
I found two of these like that one from last year and one from this year definitely the same deer but definitely has a huge hunk of bone on his pedicle I think it’s just the jeans because there was nothing wrong with him. His antlers definitely got bigger I thought it would look goofy or shrink since it looked like an inch of bone came off the antlers but they are the biggest consecutive antlers and the most points on an antlers
Ive seen this same thing happen many times. Often caused from an intracranial abcess. They rub and fight so much during pre-rut/rut. That they often get infections and issues that cause this. Ive seen a specific deer shed his entire pedicle then next year grow back with his exact same antler characteristics. But i also imagine that this issue will kill some animals as well.
I haven’t but it may work, would just need to be a shorter one due to the cedars being small and then figuring out a good filming setup from one of those.
Interesting I found alot of antlers I have never found 1 with that much bone on it, the sheds I find that are almost flat when they shed from the skull are more likely to die from my experience
They sure are tough resilient animals. I have to say I wouldn’t be surprised either way. He might die from infection, he might make a full recovery and not grow much from the side or he could grow a normal antler and bring the maturing mass and inches you expect. Keep us updated.🦌🇺🇸🙏
Have you been able to find this buck on trial cams or an encounter? What ended up happening here? Very interested to see as I have a similar, situation but I have not found buck yett
try viewing a you tube video: "buck sheds his entire skull plate", perhaps this can "shed"some light on the unique antler. best regards good to hear from you again.
Dosent look like inner skull plate. My target buck had one side broken off with The same amount of bone but you could see it was from the brain. Found him dead this spring. That looks like you might get lucky on that guy
It's not uncommon for that to happen an he should be fine as you probably know they only naturally shed their antlers due to enzyme secretion or basically acid gland in the pedical base that dissolves the bone and then they fall off so some times the gland is deeper in the pedical an looks as if a chunk off skull is attached but is easy to tell if it is just natural by the rough pitting on the bottom of the pedical where the acid or enzyme dissolves the bone
Do you think, per our previous conversation, that some new growth might have been pushing through, prior to him "breaking" that side off? And it might not even affect him if that's the case. I still have two bucks carrying antlers when clearly, some are already pushing new growth. Again, I'm not a biologist.🥴
Hey Jared, I'm 90% sure I found that 10 year old buck dead last week. I got a salvage tag for him. If you want pictures to confirm it's him, I can try to reach out
Appreciate the review of hunts. But the broken shed doesn't look good. I am no expert but 4 decades in the woods hunting and 20 years working woodlands management I have found or seen more spring sheds than I can count. I have never seen a natural shed with that much "stem". Stay safe. Enjoy.
had one exactly like that years back- had a really wet spring the following year and he did just fine with a large jump. fingers crossed

Did you find the match? Just curious if both sides were like that?
@@offseason6513 I have 2 sets of his sheds and only the broken side was affected. Other side was completely normal both years
Awesome. Thanks for the reply good to know
Had the same thing happen here in Ohio the last two years
Thanks for sharing Ben. That would be the ideal outcome for sure, we shall see! Appreciate you watching as always

I found 2yrs of sheds off a buck on our property, same amount of skull attached! Buddy of mine harvested the deer and he scored 201 at 5 1/2 yrs old
I agree that scent lingered around from being on the ground even though cedars have a strong smell. They can always pick up on the foot path to that spot as you well know. Good luck next season.
Thanks for sharing and certainly hope both those bucks have made it.
Thanks Shane
I think he'll be okay. I've found quite a few like that and the deer are fine.
Hopefully that’s the case. I’ve found several with pieces like this one, but never that deep across the entire base of the shed. We shall see.

how soon will you be able to tell through trail cam photo's if both of those bucks survived. love your content

Appreciate it Mitchell

I found a shed pretty similar here in Pennsylvania. The only difference the next year was the deer grew a kicker point from his base
That's encouraging. It's probably hard to say what's going to happen from deer to deer. I've heard of stories similar to yours all the way to guys finding the buck dead not far from the shed antler.
Awesome video, hope he'll be okay.
Thanks Squirrel, same here
He’ll be fine, I’ve got 6 years off a 9 year old buck and his right side is like that every year

Great job Jared highlighting how you hunted this buck in 23’-24’. At some point he will slip up and you will get a crack at him!
Thanks man!

Thanks for the input Jacob. Yeah, I've heard a wide variety of stories and outcomes on this. Just gotta hope for the best. Take care.
The inline most likely got stuck sparing with another deer . They probably were locked up and that’s why there is so much bone left
Hope he makes it! Easily the most shared (and stolen) buck vocalization of last year!
Ha no doubt. I still see it pop up in various places
Ive seen a shed with bigger pieces of skull cap than that from a deer farm. It sheds the same piece of skull cap every year
That’s pretty crazy
I agree with Jacob's analysis on the shed pedicle. might be his last year, hopefully he lives. Mother Nature can be tough on her creatures.
There’s a lot of ways for them to go for sure. Thanks Brad
It's Jared... Jared Mulls...
Use a Tripod Seat Stand in the cedars instead of ground hunting!
Could try that, but it’d have to be a short one. Those cedars are pretty small
I had a friend that did that years ago. He probably wasn’t 8 feet off the ground. But he had it in a triangle of cedars. It was perfectly hidden.
Have you considered a Texas tripod in those cedars?
I haven’t but it may work, would just need to be a shorter one due to the cedars being small and then figuring out a good filming setup from one of those.
They will surprise you sometimes. Theyre very tough animals

I think Grant Woods did a video about this a long time ago. He could survive
I hope he survives first and foremost. If he does, I’d be surprised if it had no effect on his antler growth but we’ll see.

The only 200in + deer I have ever hunted broke off like that. Nontypical with flyers and multiple brows on each side.
