- It's time for another GMG Review! Today I take a look at Osprey's upcoming character-driven Cyberpunk skirmish game, Reality's Edge. In the tradition of Neuromancer, Blade Runner, Altered Carbon and all your other favourites, your Show-Runner and his band of characters will navigate life in the Sprawl, look for Job-Ops and try to not to fall victim to being Pawns of the Shadow-Broker or his Rivals.

I need a new shelf for all the Osprey Games books I have purchased and I blame this channel for helping me fill that shelf :-) This is the Shadowrun Game that I always wanted.

The models from the HINT boardgame would be perfect for this - and they are AMAZING!

I legit gave Joey a high five a few days ago for bringing this awesome compendium to us! And that was just from some of the little snippets I had seen. This is about a million times more than I had hoped for!

Great googily moogily I can't wait to get me the precious! Love the TNT books, and this will no doubt scratch my itch for chrome and well dressed ronin.

Cool!cI can't wait to set up my own Cowboy Bebop inspired warband.
Looks really good, but the only trouble of the cool setting is getting enough scenery and civilian figures to do it justice

I LOVE pretty much everything about this. I've played cyberpunk 2020 off and on for about a decade, and there is a lot influence there, which I can really appriciate.
My only critique of what's been presented: empathy rules and cyberpsycosis stuff seems to be a bit of an outdated idea in cyberpunk, and is maybe not the best light to paint real people with actual mechanical prothetics. Like, if a friend looses an arm or a leg, and gets it replaced with a newer carbon fiber arm with servo motorized fingers, implying they have a lower connection to humanity seems a little short sighted.
Mechanically, it's a very interesting trope in cyberpunk and transhumanism, but I'm still not sure what the best way to handle it in games like these would be.
I *want* to believe that, but behavior on Xbox Live or in reddit forums make me wonder if some of us do get less "human" the more removed we are from face-to-face meatspace connections. Whether this is digital distance or distance from having metal instead of skin.
It's the classic cyberpunk mechanic tho, for providing a downside to heavy augmentation on a character. I like your idea that it certainly could be revisited & updated, and a different tradeoff mechanic introduced, but it really does seem to be hard-wired into this setting.
Also, the augmentations in cyberpunk are meant to be - primarily - a voluntary exchange of flesh for neuro-mechanical enhancement, rather than prosthetics required to replace lost functionality. So they're wired into the brain, they provide transhumanist enhancements that transcend our "normal" experiences and ways of relating to each other, and they're taken for very different reasons, so I think something the cyber-psychosis mechanic - for representing the individual's choices to leave their biological humanity behind - is still valid. A rethink of it would certainly be interesting, though.
With any luck, my HINT models will arrive about the same time as Reality's Edge. Time to find some neon signs for my modern slum buildings..

Have Hardwired coming, might pick this one up too for a fun read. Been looking for a sci-fi skirmish rules set to use infinity minis for since that game is a bit too cumbersome for me.

I've had my eye on this for a while, looks like it will be pretty good stuff. It's cool that the mechanics allow for a wide variation of game play. Thanks Ash, looking forward to a bat rep or three. :) So many options to use for figs: Necromunda, Rogue Stars, Maelstrom's Edge, Copplestone Future War, & Reaper.

@Ash It's like CP2020 (with the best bits of Shadowrun 4th Ed on the NET going Wireleless post-90s style) and This is Not a Test got married with a service presided by Osprey and had a slick new tabletop babby. (Confession I still err on the side of CP2020 jank. But I'm a 90s boy - not boi - with neon in my eyes, Johnny Silverhand in my ears and Chromers in my blood).
Edit: ROFL literally 2 sec after I posted you mentioned Joe's into 90s Cyberpunk. Never has a video said a more apropos thing.

The love for CP2020 (and all the things that heavily influenced Mike Pondsmith) is shining like a dive bar's neon lights in the acid rain in Night City. A thumping beat and vodka-swilling Chromers.... I'm getting carried away. Lifepath Tables return! I'm getting giddy.

Thanks for the overview. But, I really liked your old format (Let's Play:__) where you would go over the rules as you played a game. They were just more interesting videos to watch, I guess these are more like podcast style...
I could totally use the Necromunda Mini's to play this!!! or Infinity...
Those will still happen; but I’m so buried in projects that I’m going to start doing these as well in the mean-time. It means folks won’t have to wait forever to at least get a basic overview of the game.
Can't wait to pick this up miniatures already painted and waiting. Hopefully Ash will do a 'Let's Play' and some batreps!
Infinity and Necromunda would be logical starting points.
Copplestone miniatures. I guess it depends on the aesthetic you are looking for. I've gone for a Bladerunner Altered Carbon look where the tech is not so much in your face. Picked up cops corporate suited and booted types and picked figures from various packs.
Need to get civilian bystanders sorted from somewhere and robots etc. I think for terrain it'll be a mix of old and sci fi bits from tt combat.
Infinity has some suitable models but many maybe to militaristic depending on how you see the/ your setting. While Necromunda models fit into the punk theme very well getting civilians etc may prove a problem.
Also check out, Hasslefree, Studio Miniatures, Crooked Dice and the old Mongoose Judge Dredd range if you can get hold of any the gangers have some weird looking sculpts that allow for a more garish paint scheme.
Love tnt will have to pick this up as well. Wonder if I can find some minis to 3d print need to find some way to make all these games affordable lol.
This was informative and gave it a like but did not like passing over the core mechanics because they are in another ruleset, which was covered in a different video. I just think its better to have to all self contained. Thanks for posting this.
Great video, Thanks for doing a preview flip through! How do you find the rules compare to infinity? Do you prefer one or the other? From my impression of your flip through it would be really awesome to play with infinity core rules and create a campaign with reality edge rules.
Infinity’s Rules aren’t nearly as interesting for Hacking as these, nor would they handle the low model count as well. Infinity is good at what it does, but is a step abstract from a character driven game like this. :)

Hi Ash, my favorite sci fi game is infinity but the setting is not as dark as the cyberpunk that i love like bladde runner, jhonny mnemonik, etc. I am waiting for infinity N4 cause in Mexico you can not spend 75 usd without give a very good thinking, do you feel reality´s edge has a better feel as a game? Thanks in advance.

It’s not really a miniature game.
I got it in the mail, but I'll pass and will sell it.. It's too long, rules go on and on.. If I was 20 years younger, I would have loved, but it's too much for me at this stage.

This looks nice. A pre disaster This is Not a Test. Could be used for all sorts of future cities. This could also be mega cities or the aliens universe. Judge Dredds gun is called a Law Giver, micro missiles would be heat seekers. The pistol that shoots micro missiles sounds like Gene Symmonds gun in Runaway.

Not exactly, this is a table top "skirmish" game. So you each get a gang, and fight on the streets against your friends. The models gain skills and equipment like an rpg, just you play the gang leader, rather than each player being a member.

Well, this gets into the two uses of a name meaning different things. The Cyber Punk 2020 your friends are talking about is the name of a RPG, which is currently being made into a computer game. The cyber punk reffered to here is in some cases talking about some insperation from that, but by in large talking about a genre. Much like if a game was called Steam Punk 1860 or High Fantasy 1066, the name ends up being both genre and game title. So this is Reality's Edge, which has no affiliation with the game Cyber Punk 2020, but is set in the cyber punk genre (so bassicaly the criminal underbelly of a high technology, generally corporate run future).
For other cyber punk, not Cyber Punk 2020 examples there are: computer games-Deus Ex, Syndicate, and Shadowrun (based on an RPG of the same name).
Movies/shows: Ghost in the Shell, Altered Carbon, Blade Runner, Matrix, and Total Recall.
These lists are by no means exaustive.
As cool as these rules are, what minis would be good for this game? Infinity minis are cool but hardly cyberpunk in appearance.
Hasslefree, Core Space, Heresy, Reaper all have great cyberpunk minis :)
Copplestone Miniatures also have some good stuff.
