These are the kinds of videos that make TH-cam so special. I feel for the 1000's of people that have already paid over $1000 to have this replaced. If mine would have broken last year I would have been one of those people too. Thank-you so much for making this video!
Proof that not all heroes wear capes. If you live near Lansing, MI I'd be happy to take you out for a steak dinner and still have over $1000 in my pocket from all the time and money you just saved me. My son just bought his first car...the weather got cold; no heat. Thank you for saving the day.
Hey thanks for this great idea ,even though, it works for over a week, but , this approach inspired me to go beyond,, to break a slot in between the Heater core and a.c. evaporator , big enough to bring the blend door out and bring in, the new one, not to many parts to disassemble, just the blend door actuator and the box glove compartment, to cover the hole or slot done ,I did it with aluminum tape, very important thing ,is that ones the actuator is reinstall, make sure to process the relearning by switching on the ignition key, and press 3 times the left and center buttons on the HVAC cluster control unit, until this one's start to blink and stop doing it, then the actuator cluster will be re-set, I used an occilator tool, to cut the plastic chamber this job took me around 2 hrs to be done , good luck and, I hope this comment could help someone else...
Hey man I can not thank you enough for this video..well explained and easy to follow..my wife's 06 equinox had the same problem and I'm far from being a mechanic and I could do it..thanks again for saving me $1000. ur a genius..god bless

I want to thank you for saving me 800-1000. I have literally put in 10 hours into trying to figure out my wife’s heating problem. I was about to lose my mind and give up until I came across your video. Drilled a 3/8 hole, used a fish tape and BOOM hot air. You are the man.

I love this video. Following your path I was able to fix my lack of heat 2006 Equinox. Such a great fix! I was able to catch the corner of the blend door nearest the hole, burned a hole thru the plastic and permanently attached a foot long pc of fish tape routed thru a pc of tubing glued to the box. Now I have a permanent set up- push for heat pull for cold. You rock Buddy!
You are a Genius!! I can't thank you enough for finding away around of tearing apart the whole console to fix a stupid cheap part, you saved me large money and time and from freezing my ass off for the winter!!! this was perfect!!!
Just got it done!! Saved so much money. Used a coat hanger and once I drilled the first 5/8" hole, I could see the coil and stick my little finger in to feel around. So then I drilled 2 more hole up and right on the angle to get to the door. AWESOME. Remember, the plastic is very thin. Use very little pressure or you will go through a coil!!! Thanks Again.
Amazing ingenuity man!! I called the Chevy dealership and they said this was a recall and they have a kit that they can fix this with so ur knob still controls the door and it’s only 100$ that’s labor and the sleeve kit.

after watching a video of someone taking off the entire dash to do what you did , I am so glad I found your video! Time to break out the drill. It may be my heater core but I'll give this a shot first
Thanks for the video, I was about to shell out over 1K to replace a $40 blend door. This was actually a recall, but I had to have it fixed before last November to qualify. I used a bent coat hanger and shoved it vertically about 8 inches through the drilled hole. Works perfect. Next summer I will remove the hanger for A/C.
Did you just go straight up from the hole in the same position as in the video, and how much force was needed to move the door? I've been playing with it a little and can't find anything that moves...
Aric Adlam got it! I now have heat! So thankful for this video. I knew there had to be an easier way. Feel sorry for the people that blew over $1000 on this repair.
Thank you thank you we cannot thank you enough, exact same car, exact same problem, we were disassembled beyond what you'd exposed and ready to quit when we watched your excellent description and now we're flipping the bird to equinox !!
This video was perfect. Thank you. Once I got my hole through the plastic, and figured out where the door and the coils were, I pushed the blend door up with my finger, then i got a piece of wire hanger fixed in there to keep the door all the way up.
You ain't cheap, Clint, you're on the money! Spent 5 c on this ridiculous item and repair, and 2 years later it's ticking again. I worried the first time that some nervous nellie would hear it and call the authorities out of fear, but if I fail at this I'll let it be. Great and useful video, brother. THANK YOU!
great video! wish I had paid more attention... my first hole was down and to the right (forward) of the correct location, that went into the AC coil spewing the contents onto the floor! After drilling into the correct place, this fixed my issues! Please, pay more attention than I did!
Clint Kinney you did good... that's just how I operate. wouldn't be me if I didn't screw something up. thanks for the video. it bought me at least 4 more months with that car.
@@clintkinney9517 I just did the same thing and can't find any info on what to do about the coil. Any suggestions on what I should search for? A/c coil gave me nothing. Thanks!
OMG!!! I have heat again!!! You rock! I feel like I should send you $100. Took a little playing around as I couldn't find a proper wire to use. I tried first with a very stiff thin metal bar that didn't work. Then I tried using some solder. Only wire I could find that was semi flexible, that I figured I could use temporarily. I'll get something more permanent later today. But the important thing is I won't freeze my ass off again during my daily three hour drive as I work. Long Johns are coming off! It's -1 (Celsius) and light snow at the moment. Fuck I'm so happy right now!!!
Funny enough I was just planning on trying this exact thing. Perfect timing and thanks for the video. About how far in is the door? Around how much wire is going into that hole? *Edit - Never mind, read some of the comments. Sounds like about eight inches up towards the radio.
I drilled the hole and can't get heat. I have a diagram of the heat box but it's expanded. I cant seem to get the door up. Is the door of the firewall side of the actuator or on the interior side?
Awesome vid, I was going to suggest instead of drilling a hole and risking hitting the heater core what about heating up a short piece of pipe and burning a hole instead?, I was going to attempt it but the car only has 40.000 miles on it and the wife wanted it fixed right, had the heater core replaced at the same time and the bill was $1400.00 cdn.
Great video. I can get heat if I have the fan pointing to the face and feet directions and with the recirculate button pressed on. But if I switch off the recirculate and point the knob to the defrost positions - like defrost windshield and feet - I get just enough to warm the windows but not much interior heat. Does this mean my blend door is the culprit, or is it just a new thermostat that I need? Also my AC is on the blink. AC light flashes when I press AC.
I've been doing this method for a couple of years now ever since i found this video, however my blend door is now stuck on heat and will not fall down and go on A/c mode. Any ideas on how I can get the blend door to fall down. It feels like it's down but still has heat blowing.
I plan on doing this this weekend. I have no heat and I'm in Missouri, even inside is getting frosted. sooooooo I'm not surrendering much money on this..... so I have questions. looks like your didn't have to take over the lower panel where the fuses are, but did you have to remove the glove box on that? with the holes made, should I be sealing those up once propped open?
Not OP but I'm doing this right now. You don't have to remove the glove box but there is a plastic panel under the glove box held on by two screws in the front and something else I can't find on the right side. I took out the screws and just pulled the plastic down and to the right. Seeing now that this panel is where the fan is located and how it wasn't sealed at all, I'd say those tiny holes won't matter much.
Frank Garcia you should be able to just pull the rod or wire out and it should fall down. If it does not fall down with the air on full blast and that may force it down

Hey brother, really appreciate this video and I'm about to give it a go, but I wanted a little clarification: In the comments, you mentioned that only one hole is necessary. Which hole is the one i need to drill? The one shown at 00:53 or the one at 1:24? I gather it's the one at 1:24 but just want to make sure. Once I drill that hole, I need to insert flexible metal (like a coat hanger) DOWn through the hole to hook onto and pull up the door, then leave it propped up with said metal. Is this all correct?
Clint Kinney you are literally a hero, this has got to be the most useful video I’ve ever seen on TH-cam! I’ve got heat now! Next time I’m in Buffalo, I owe you dinner and a round of beers at the Anchor Bar 😁
I followed the video instructions and I can’t find the blend door. I drilled in the exact same spot , I can get my finger in and feel around and the only thing I can feel/see is the Evap core . Where exactly is the door located ? , at the bottom of the housing , top of the housing and how far into the housing is it ? Thanks for the help 👍🏻
It may be laying flat down horizontally or up vertically. It has kind of a honeycomb look to it. It also has foam around the edge for sealing. You may not be able to feel it with your finger but if you stick something thin but stiff in there and poke it then it should break free.
@@clintkinney9517 I’m not sure if what I’m feeling / seeing is the door or Evap core you were talking about . It looks like a heating core and is quite long from the picture I took . I bought the car several months ago and the seller told me he had replaced the heater core . Whatever it is I’m feeling/ seeing has no give in it at all . Thanks for your time , you are a diamond
I’m in the right spot I just don’t know what the blend door looks like but it doesn’t even look like there’s anything in there so I hope it didn’t fall off or something. It’s currently dark and 15 degrees outside but I need my car for school in the morning so I’m staying out here until I figure it out 😂
is the hole you drilled a few inches below the door? I drilled a hole and was feeling around in there with a metal file and couldn't find it. I am debating on drilling a larger hole so I can feel with my finger. I just don't want to go crazy making the hole too big.
mike weekley drilling a bigger hole won't be a big issue. You can always repair it with cape or glue a piece of plastic back on there. You have to go way down with something more flexible than a file and pull it up. You will barely feel anything
so I drill the hole and I'm sticking wire in there, I can feel the heat getting better. But I don't think that I'm hitting the blend door. What angle do I need to push to open the blend door. If u don't mind me asking. Thank you in advance.
Hey is there a possible way to show u a screen shot of the inside of mine because from what I see I see a flat wall on the left. Side and infront of it is the coil so where is the blend door? Any help would be lovely thank you
It's not just GM. I have the same issue(s) with '89 Jeep Cherokee (Chrysler):: remove the WHOLE FRIGGIN' dash to replace the heater core. ( I still haven't done it.) Shops make $$Millions each year off of these mechanics' nightmares. In '82, had a '64 Barracuda with leaking core. Removed 2-3 screws to get the cover down; disconnect heater hoses; unscrew two bolts holding the core; install new core; close it up; reconnect hoses; fill coolant. I was done in an hour.
Take a wire coat hanger or similar wire that is stiff and see if you can poke around in there towards the bottom to find the door. If you are only getting cold air then most likely it is in the down position.
Clint Kinney it’s like a kick plate or something, it’s plastic and has like carpet on the top where the wiring it idk what it’s called but that’s the best way I could describe it lol
Hey, great video... I was very excited when I found this... Living in Canada our winters are brutal and it's starting to get cold... I knew there had to be an easy (cheap) fix for this, and like you, I couldn't justify spending over $1000 to fix this... I sure as hell wasn't about to tear about the whole car either... I've drilled the hole in the exact spot you've shown, but I'm having difficult finding the door to push up... Do you just go directly straight up up right from that hole, and how much force is needed to move the door up? All I could find is a very stiff and thick metal wire that isn't flexible at all. I'm able to move it around in the hole but am not feeling anything that moves... I've been playing and punching the heat controls quite a bit since this happened and just last week I had a little bit of heat coming out, which I lost when I tried to get a little more... I'm hoping I didn't totally break off the door from playing with it too much...
Franky Piper the door is in the down position. You have to pull the door up to the off position. Do not pry on That Metal thing that is your heater core
Im in Carthage, up by watertown. We will be going threw Utica on friday, Was wondering if you wouldn't mind showing my husband how to go about doing this, only cause he not sure what you did with the door once you ran the wire threw. Really dont want to pay a 1000$ to get this fixed. Thank you either way.
@@clintkinney9517 took about 5 minutes but I got it. Thanks Dude for the video it saved me lots of money and now my morning rides are warm lol Thanks again!!
I don't know what I'm doing wrong, It's not working for me. I drilled where you drilled and went up towards the dashboard then I went left toward the radio. It smells like chemicals in the car now. Which way do I go and how far? Thank you in advance! I know nothing about cars.
Clint Kinney thank you for responding, I didn't hear a hissing sound. I am going to try again but is the door located to the left toward the radio or up toward the dash?
You must have hit your evaporator coil. I said in the video it is very close to that so be careful. You will not have air conditioning in the summer. And I think you might have to drill another hole.
@@clintkinney9517 yeah I think I did I appreciate it I think I'd need the drills behind out holes where I was at I was trying to get close to where you was at
Tomika Snead it could be your heater core. You need to get it flushed. I have to do it again for the 2nd time this season. Mine isn't getting all that hot. After I flushed it the first time it was like a sauna.
I went exactly where you told me and went slow and blew a ac line I’m so pissed at myself I can’t believe I fucked this up in my 12 years of working on cars never done anything this dumb
There is no 'kit' that is going to work to fix the door. One of the hinge pins gets SHEARED off by a bad actuator. Even if you replace the blend door it's only a matter of time before the actuator shears off the hinge of the new door. What you need is a new actuator and blend door. The only way you can change the blend door is by completely removing everything, there's no way in there without either cutting everything up or dismantling the whole front end of the interior.
MrHemi4spd it may be hard to understand that you've done a hack job. I've done a full, real repair including heater core. What you don't understand is why they break in the first place, it's a faulty actuator. The kit is basically the same hack done here but costing more money. It involves a hole saw LOL.

Once I drill that hole, I need to insert flexible metal (like a coat hanger) DOWn through the hole to hook onto and pull up the door, then leave it propped up with said metal. Is this all correct?
Check out frame 1:42. That is the hole you need.
Yes that all sounds good.
@@clintkinney9517 thank you so much for the quick reply, you are the best! God bless
Clint Kinney you are literally a hero, this has got to be the most useful video I’ve ever seen on TH-cam! I’ve got heat now! Next time I’m in Buffalo, I owe you dinner and a round of beers at the Anchor Bar 😁
brilliant! mine is stuck on heat and it's mid June and hitting the upper 80s
The door will be black

Also, if you can locate the blend door actuator and are able to draw an imaginary level line to the opposite side of the blower case that might help
Thanks, this vidio got me to the hart of the problem fast and easy. As it is my wifes car and she has heat and that makes her Hot...
Thanks a lot for the video. I got it worked.
Awesome fix! Thanks 👍
So this will work in the same way with the Pontiac torrent 2006? Please , thank you in advance. Rick Berry
Rick Berry yes I do believe so. They are the same vehicle with a few differences so, I don't think that you will have an issue.
Clint Kinney , thanks, I'm gonna try it
so I drill the hole and I'm sticking wire in there, I can feel the heat getting better. But I don't think that I'm hitting the blend door. What angle do I need to push to open the blend door. If u don't mind me asking. Thank you in advance.
It's stuck in the down position you have to pry it up
ok gotcha, will do tomorrow.
Hey is there a possible way to show u a screen shot of the inside of mine because from what I see I see a flat wall on the left. Side and infront of it is the coil so where is the blend door? Any help would be lovely thank you
Ckinney89sho@gmail.com you can send it there
Sounds like that's the blend door itself
Hey I actually found it and got it pushed up but it blows warm will it heat up over time? Thx
That depends if your heater core is plugged.
Meaning it could be clogged?
Good stuff man. Why the hell did GM think that design was a good idea? Sigh
I got mine pushed up but still no heat and heat worked perfectly last winter?? Tia
Could be the heater core.
Couldn't find the blend door. How far up is it in the H vac unit itself?
It might be in the down position.
Just be careful whatever you do not to poke the EVAP coil or the heater core
@@clintkinney9517 thanks, I can't seem to figure out the configuration of it.
Take a wire coat hanger or similar wire that is stiff and see if you can poke around in there towards the bottom to find the door. If you are only getting cold air then most likely it is in the down position.
@@clintkinney9517 awesome thanks, I'll check it out. Appreciate you taking time to reply to a two year old video!
Did you have to remove the dash to drill the whole
No. Its under the glove box
I can’t get to where you drilled the second hole, it’s blocked on mine
Is it blocked inside the housing?
Clint Kinney yeah, well at least I think so, it’s fine tho I’m gonna show my dad and see if he can help me get it fixed thanks.
I don't understand what it's blocked by
Clint Kinney it’s like a kick plate or something, it’s plastic and has like carpet on the top where the wiring it idk what it’s called but that’s the best way I could describe it lol
Take it off
Hey, great video...
Hi I did this but it doesn't seem to get hot.. do you have any advice?
There are 2 smaller houses near the firewall, do they get hot?
*hoses
Any antifreeze near the passenger side floor?
where in New york are you? we are having same issue with ours.
JoAnne Boshane Utica
Im in Carthage, up by watertown. We will be going threw Utica on friday, Was wondering if you wouldn't mind showing my husband how to go about doing this, only cause he not sure what you did with the door once you ran the wire threw. Really dont want to pay a 1000$ to get this fixed. Thank you either way.
OK let me know when you're in town.
Awesome, thank you very much. And will do
is there a way to exchange phone number or contacts info so I can get a hold of you friday?
How can you see to attach your wire to it?
You have to feel for it. Be careful not to pull it out of the other side.
@@clintkinney9517 took about 5 minutes but I got it. Thanks Dude for the video it saved me lots of money and now my morning rides are warm lol Thanks again!!
I'm having a hard time figuring out where you drilled that 2nd hole.
You only need one hole
Try to pay attention to the areas surrounding the hole.
Ok. Thanks for answering. I didnt expect a quick reply. Wow. I watched it several times. I'm fairly certain that I know where to drill now.
Just be careful you don't go too far forward or you will hit the evaporator for the AC
Pause it at one minute into the video
Thanks bro for the video
I don't know what I'm doing wrong, It's not working for me. I drilled where you drilled and went up towards the dashboard then I went left toward the radio. It smells like chemicals in the car now. Which way do I go and how far? Thank you in advance! I know nothing about cars.
Mom Me did you hear a large hissing sound? the blend door is in the down position. You have to pull it up with a coat hanger and push it up.
Clint Kinney thank you for responding, I didn't hear a hissing sound. I am going to try again but is the door located to the left toward the radio or up toward the dash?
Mom Me it is stuck in the down position so you have to pull it up and drop it up.
Great video!!
Thank you
Thank you
Thank you
I have no heat in my equinox and this looks very difficult. Help me please 😫
Dawereck this is the only way I found for an easy fix, do you have someone that can help you?
Dawereck hope u fixed it I did mine after this video and it's not that hard
@@xiangyu168yu7 tell me your in ohio
Common problem with the year of make. I own a 06 as well
how do it so that only air blows cold
heat is up so you would need to put the door down for AC
I have hit something, it's shooting out fluid. I think it's freon. Help
You must have hit your evaporator coil. I said in the video it is very close to that so be careful. You will not have air conditioning in the summer. And I think you might have to drill another hole.
@@clintkinney9517 yeah I think I did I appreciate it I think I'd need the drills behind out holes where I was at I was trying to get close to where you was at
Do you think I'll be a easy fix for the whole of do you think I might have to end up pulling my dash out
Just put tape on it
@@clintkinney9517 thanks for your help
Mine is still not getting hot.. I wonder what's wrong now
Tomika Snead it could be your heater core. You need to get it flushed. I have to do it again for the 2nd time this season. Mine isn't getting all that hot. After I flushed it the first time it was like a sauna.
It was my heater core and evap core.
after replacing the blend door and blend door actuator
golden guanyu it was the heater core..
I went exactly where you told me and went slow and blew a ac line I’m so pissed at myself I can’t believe I fucked this up in my 12 years of working on cars never done anything this dumb
Did this and the heat only came out of the right vent above the radio
Something may be blocking it
They make a repair kit for these so there is no need to remove the dash. I'm gonna buy the kit and see how it works. I'll post a vid
I have an 08. May only be plugged heater core. But if it is the blend door, what is this kit you mentioned? Thanks!
MrHemi4spd Hey dolt, I've done the actual repair so suck a fat one. Good luck with your kit. You lack the ability to fix a unicycle I'd imagine.
MrHemi4spd it may be hard to understand that you've done a hack job. I've done a full, real repair including heater core. What you don't understand is why they break in the first place, it's a faulty actuator. The kit is basically the same hack done here but costing more money. It involves a hole saw LOL.
12-26-18:: "The video is unavailable." (says YTube) That sucks. Thanks for trying.
Metal wire in the fuse box
But your notvshowing where blend door is
You won't be able to actually see it unless you take it all apart. The door itself is behind the fan housing.
Okay maybe im the only fuckup here but i attempted this and it squirted antifreeze everywhere
My friend, sorry but it sounds like you need a new heater core. I tried to explain to the best of ability to not hit those coils.
@@clintkinney9517 so what coil did i hit?
@@danielschroer7945 evaporator coil
