"I just spent 60 days in the jailhouse for the crime of having no dough now here I am back out on the street for the crime of having nowhere to go" Great lyric imo.
Rick Danko is my cousin. I obviously never got to follow his career as he died only a few years after I was born. However, my mother always made me watch this concert in its entirety growing up so I knew who my cousin was and knew a part of our family history, and I’m so thankful she did. This particular genre isn’t my style, but when it comes to The Band, you CANNOT help but love every second of their music, no matter the song. This show was so powerful to me because you see them all at their worst, yet all at their very best. Truly a great end to their career.
That's awesome! It's hard to beat these guys really. Nobody really quite did what they do. They inspired a sea change in music from Eric Clapton to a host of others. They're responsible for a lot of the sound of the 70s in rock n roll. Hell before that they were Bob Dylans band. Hel they are The Band! Lol So much talents in one place
I love the Last Waltz. Your cousin, the brilliant Rick Danko, who is sadly missed, was a great singer and multi-instrumentalist. I love the part on the Last Waltz when Rick is a bit worse for wear when he's playing fiddle and singing "Old Time Religion" with Robbie Robertson and Richard Manuel. It's so funny but you can see what good friends they were. Rick with the rest apart from Levon Helm were part of Bob Dylan's most famous world tour of 1966. That's another amazing thing to be part of, aswell as being in the Band, he backed Dylan on concerts some critics call are some of the best ever and very iconic. Thanks for sharing that with us. I really appreciate it. Take Care.
in their post--Robbie '80s revival with the Kate Brothers around central CA I saw them in small venues where we danced close enough to the stage to see Rick Danko had an especially radiant smile that bathed all present in warmth
Upon Robertson's passing I've dived back into music from The Band in the past couple weeks and so thankful for all of the video clips that survived thru the years. But I'm struggling with some serious melancholy, wishing I had seen Rick in concert in the years after The Last Waltz (I only ever saw The Band on Dylan's '74 tour). In addition to his great vocals and musicianship I've been so impressed with the passion and exuberance in his performances. His personality shines through. And his music lives on.
I was sad tonight watching this for the hundreth time in my life. Richard is clearly almost drunk but his voice is fabulous. I was sad to hear Robbie passed. I still don't like him though. He lacked warmth and heart.
You are sad that Robbie passed, but you don't like him, hm. Usually when you don't like someone you are neutral when they pass, but I will take you at your word.I think if you read different accounts or books you might view Robbie in a different light. From his own book it is obvious he was torn up about Richads addiction, as well as Rick and Levon. Also Barney Hoskyns biograpy gives a different and pretty balances view of what happened.@@teacup3133
Love this song. Rick is my favorite singer from The Band, but Richard and Levon is a close second. Use to think Levon was the best, but that was before I really listened to Rick Danko singing "It makes no difference" and Stage Freight.
@@hannejeppesen1809 With Richard, we got heartbreak or humor, often both, close together. With Rick, we got yearning, melancholy, a tinge of neurosis. With Levon, we got strength, honesty, swaggering confidence. When I listen to the great songs Robbie later wrote for his solo albums, such as Broken Arrow, What About Now, Go Back to Your Woods, Hold Back the Dawn, Soap Box Preacher-and he's singing them the best he can-I mentally assign them to one of those guys and think about what might have been.
When you look back now ,the guy who edited the Last Waltz movie should have gotten some kind of recognition for editing excellence ! Completely brilliant .
Whenever I see a video from The Last Waltz I'm struck by how much into the music they all were. Just such perfection, Robbie's guitar playing Levon and Richard singing and my favorite RIck Danko, and Garth whatever he does so unusual and perfect.
I was a touring musician when this film was released . I had been touring constantly with a rock n roll band for three or four years on the same circuit. The situation put me in a musical rut I could not get out of. When I watched the Last Waltz , I was immediately rescued from that rut because watching my musical heroes brought to me immense inspiration. And so I received sort of a musical " second wind." So grateful. I mean just watch Robbie Robertson; his excitement is CONTAGIOUS !
It’s so sad to see him struggle so much in this concert. But he recovered in the 80’s to have the best voice ever! But his demons never left him and I hope he’s at peace now. Rip to Rick, Richard, and levon
This is fantastic to hear and see. I loved these guys forever. Oh Levon, you were just a huge bundle of talent on any instrument you desired to play. Pure god given talent with all the members of the Band. God bless you all.
Whenever I watch the LAST WALTZ,especially this performance of RICHARD,I couldn't help but wonder what kind of a solo artist he would have been? I just bet he would have been awesome cause he sometimes plays drums as well as a great pianist.
They were so talented. They were the artists artists. Their first 2 albums Music From Big Pink and The Band and The Basement Tapes with Dylan influenced the way music was going. They had a influence on the likes of George Harrison, Eric Clapton, The Rolling Stones amongst others. Albums like Beggars Banquet, Let It Be, All Things Must Pass are just a few that has influence on them.
Thanks for this post! Every so often I'd come here and watch the movie clip, but was bugged that the song was incomplete, and by the intrusion of the Ronnie Hawkins intro seconds after the song ended. Glad to discover this.
Its so hard to believe this concert took place in 1978, about 50 years ago now. This is such a great great concert and i just love to watch it over and over now. The thing is, I saw the band back in those days and I totally took them for granted. Maybe because there was SO much great music being made in those days. I saw many bands in the same concert hall as I did the Band. I saw bands like The Stones, Led Zep, Clapton, Santana, the Doobies, Yes, Jethro Tull, Tom Petty...well the list goes on and on. Its no wonder I blew the Band off in those days. Its only now that I realize I should have been paying more attention.
I have the two-disc Last Waltz CD, I know there is more than one version out there. On that version, it doesn't quite sound like Richard, maybe more like Rick. Are my ears just going on does one of the CD versions of this song have someone besides Richard singing the intro/lead? I have read there are different recordings used in the film vs. album, so maybe that's it? (I can check the year/version of the CD set I have.)
Levon sings along with Richard on some verses, on some mixes his voice is clearer and on the same level as Richard's (unlike Rick who only accompanies him in the choirs). In the movie different mixes were used (the clearest is Don't Do It) but in the video I used the album version
I know he missed his cue to come in on the finale of the concert when everyone was on stage singing I Shall Be Released. He was drinking heavily then. They re-recorded his part days later. Perhaps they altered some of his work on other songs.
Go out yonder, peace in the valley Come downtown, have to rumble in the alley Oh, you don't know the shape I'm in Has anybody seen my lady This living alone will drive me crazy Oh, you don't know the shape I'm in I'm gonna go down by the water But I ain't gonna jump in, no, no I'll just be looking for my maker And I hear that that's where she's been, oh Out of nine lives, I spent seven Now, how in the world do you get to Heaven Oh, you don't know the shape I'm in I just spent sixty days in the jailhouse For the crime of having no dough Now here I am back out on the street For the crime of having nowhere to go Save your neck or save your brother Looks like it's one or the other Oh, you don't know the shape I'm in Now two young kids might start a ruckus You know they feel you trying to shuck us Oh, you don't know the shape I'm in
On this film footage, something strange is going on. Even though you can't see horn section players on the stage, you can hear their sound. A mic stand is set up in front of Robbie, but Thank God, I can't hear his frail voice.

I wish I had never found out that Robertson insisted on having a dead mic. Turns out he couldn't sing a lick. Great guitar player and songwriter though.

Your cousin was a genius. I’ve been lucky enough to play with Terry, his brother, a number of times. Do you have a musical family there
Rick was a force !!!!!!!!
RIP Richard. I know you were struggling around this time but I'm glad you found your voice again in your final years.
you should remove your ruthless comment and show respect. You really know chit.
I was sad tonight watching this for the hundreth time in my life. Richard is clearly almost drunk but his voice is fabulous. I was sad to hear Robbie passed. I still don't like him though. He lacked warmth and heart.
"Around this time"? Richard was zonked in 1970 on the Great Canadian Tour!
Drunk or not, Levon knew... he always said Richard was their true lead singer. That's a helluva a comment w/ Ricky and he himself, in the house.

What a band ! Levon rolling those drums with that sneer on his face gives me chills and tears
Watching a lot of The Band today. RIP Robbie. Such an amazing group of musicians. This is utterly brilliant...
Me too
Even a deteriorating Richard was better than most. I'm proud to share a birthday with this man.
I also share a birthday with him

El inconfundible sello vocal de The Band en la batería, el gran Levon Helm. Siempre presente con su música.

Great song, great album. Great singing Richard
Such a travesty that Scorcese had the camera operators adoring all of Robbie's hair flips instead of focusing in on Richard.
Awesome Talent love it!!
Richard's demise is just one of Rock's underappreciated, and least spoke about, tragedies.....
Richard, clearly fucked up, just kills it. Talent wins out.

The Band: YES!
Three...Levon Helm, Rick Danko and Richard Manuel. They were hugely blessed.
I saw them in Hialeah two days before he died.
Richard Emmanuel died in Orlando, FL.
