CHEAP Audi 3.0t Intake with BIG performance

- This is for all my Audi drivers with the 3.0t engine in your car which could be in the s4, s5, a6, a7, sq5, and q5. In this video I show a BUDGET intake I put together for only $130 that whines and performs just like the $500 intakes. The intake is made up of a K&N filter with a modified box and RKX intake tube. Like I mentioned I have owned two other Audi s4's one with the APR intake and one with the Injen intake and this one performs the same and give the same supercharger whine. I will say the open air APR intake may have been louder but it was on a higher revving S4 so its hard to compare. If you have any questions feel free to ask.

Makes sense. $130, $280, $499 at the core they're all a filter and a tube. Granted, the higher ends come with some molded plastic or aluminum that's supposed to work as a heat shield, but with everything stuffed in one compartment, I've always wondered how much "colder" is air anyway.
great video and thanks for taking time to create it. since posting this a little over a year ago, prices have gone up on both items you use. RKX silicon intake is $105. K&N e-1987 is $75. totaling $180. i was ready to pull the trigger on this method (and again thank you!) but a CTS turbo full mandrel bent 3.5" intake kit with heat shields, filter, all hardware is on sale currently for $280.. ended up going that route. in case anyone is sorting by 'new' here's some updated pricing info. jan 2 2022. -EM
Good point. Better to go full custom instead of diy since the custom kit would fit a lot better
Regardless of the cutout which may or may not be drawing in engine heat - the cut out is extremely tidy.

Just as good as any intake for half the price I did something similar with my 3.0T A6 the stock air box in these audis can be used in a lot of ways

im using the 4" blox racing velocity stack to a massive 6" x8" long aem dry filter.
with a ported supercharger and the right cooling setup, the "hot air intakes work best. the boxs (even a rs7 or one with custom cut outs) are restrictive at ported charger levels.
at stage 1 and single pulley i loved having my filter in oem box woth few holes on bottom/ passanger side
I'd just stick with cutting the lid and adding a less-restrictive filter, at least for the whipple-whine.

For the people wondering this exact setup works on a c6 a6 (2009) however I removed the entire factory air box, gotta say I’m very impressed. Definitely recommend for price, sound, and performance.

Afe filter works just as good if not better and 034 motorsports has a similar tube both options are cheaper did the same kind of setup on my other b8 s4 and did it all for under $90

Is there a firmware for the engine and gearbox and a cold intake? did you change the pulley?
Put an 034 motorsport pipe and cut into the airbox but it still doesn't whine anywhere near as much as the revo open air intake I installed after

An86suvivr ya and I honestly wish it wasn’t this color. My one door got a funky dent and the best way to fix it is a new door. Well I’m trying to buy a factory painted one and it’s impossible to find that color haha

The injen is a BAD design, the stock air box is pulling the best possible air.. upgrade the tube and filter and that’s it

Don't worry about that tube compressing man! Its reinforced with steel rings. its not a 15 $ ebay tube
the tube won't suck closed, if the filter flows enough CFM. I run 50-60psi boost on my 6.7L Cummins tune, and it never has sucked the 3" silicone intake hose closed, and it's smaller than the JHM and RKX inlets.
This is better than aftermarket intake, and it looks way cooler with the intake part cut out

Thanks for the video. This is a similar set up to what I installed but used an aFe filter, which fits the airbox. You mention that the stock intake does not flow that well. Actually, it flows very well and can be backed up by measurements. There are guys with dual pulley S4s on race gas running mid-11s through the .25 mile with the stock intake. Using a silicone hose does increase the S/C whine and you may get several whp from such a setup. Keep up the good work.

@@GUNSKNIVESNBIKES wow! It's been a while. I think it was around 45 to $50. I'm actually using their dry filter but they have an oiled one that's nearly identical.

The oiled filter is perfect for this vehicle, no issues whatsoever

Your camera picked up the SC whine, it doesn’t have to be that loud unless you’re planning to tune the vehicle

Is the RKX a larger diameter then stock? I believe mine is 3.5” diameter. I just threw a K&N filter on it and a dirt bike k&n filter for the breather hose on the bottom ( 2014 Q7 is what we have )

Great Video! Beautiful Setup! I have a 2014 Audi Q7 S-Line...wondering if there's another tube, anyone know's about, I could use instead of the silicone.
I use the JHM intake tube (silicone) on my '13 Q7 Prestige S. Under $100 for the intake tube.
Everyone is commenting about the holes in the airbox.. but the Rs7 comes with holes in the airbox from the factory? Lol
I know it’s an d video, but you would have been better off trimming the entire top off that air box and using weather stripping on the top of it to seal to the hood. It would have been the best way to keep the intake from sucking in the warmer air from the engine bay and still using the cold air the factory intake is trying to feed into the filter.
I realllyyy don't think you're getting any power gains with out a tune. The sweet sound it makes definitely makes it feel faster, but I doubt there's any real bump there.

That's counterproductive work. Now the engine sucking up all the hot air from the engine bay. The opening should have been at the bottom, not the top of the airbox.
This is probably true when sitting at a stoplight with traffic, but as soon as he starts moving he still have the front end snorkel that is bringin fresh air under some pressure. So I guess it’s really not that bad in most normal driving situations...

The scoop that is up by the grille and holes in the bottom shouldn't let much hot air stay.
Seems to be a few comments bashing this... ignore them. Your a good creative dude that took the time to make something your own with a level of skill beyond most guys out there. I like it! Does amybody feel the 3.0t with the 8 speed feels sometimes not smooth. And the engine braking at low speeds is too much
Take it out of dynamic mode
The engine braking is much harder with sport mode active.
I’ve added drivetrain parts to stiffen it up makes it less flimsy feeling

Not everything „engineers“ design is actually beneficial to the process or output.
the audi intake is just perfect no other aftermarket is needed , i stuck to the filter and the airpipe , enough noise ;) . some users on audizine put a grill on that hole
Engineered to not make noise to not scare soccer moms. That tube has to go. The box can stay though

Ive actually done it both ways on my A6. Had an injen on my first A6. Took out the box, etc...didn't see much, if any, gain. My 2nd A6, I added the K&N replacement for the stock filter, added a chrome intake pipe and left the box alone. Using the same chip I had in the first Audi, and there definitely is a big difference. Makes sense. Those engineers at Audi know what they're doing...it gets plenty cold air straight into the box. You lose all that air the min you open things inside that hotass engine compartment.
Better off keeping the stock airbox like it is and install a less restrictive drop in filter.
Intakes not giving big hp gains either way. So enjoy hearing your supercharger whine bro.. as long as u enjoy 4get the naysayers

If he only wanted to spend the least amount he could, I’m pretty sure he won’t spend what is costs for a dyno session just to find out his gains were not “huge”, they were basically nothing in the hp, just sound.

Factory intake is not restrictive at all. You are delusional. Also now your sucking up hot air due to that cutting. DO NOT do this. Also that K and N filter is ruining your MAF sensor over time due to the oil filter.
your correct up to the point about the MAF sensor. These engines use a map sensor instead but I agree, cutting up the intake system will create more dust and heat when the outside air flows into the intake system.
This is complete crap. What this guy is proposing will not be better than stock. Save your money

@@RaiJin.335 yes I have been that guy. I have tried it. It did not work. I tried a different filter. Did not work. I started reading on this. I looked at the way it is Engineered by the manufacturer ...turns out it's not restrictive and can easily handle 50% more power. Turns out the aftermarket sucks warmer air and there are vortexes around it and it's less efficient because it's bolted on and not Engineered in. There is another issue these filters require to be sprayed with oil to filter the air. If you do not put enough oil you will not get proper filtering. If you put too much you mess up your MAF sensor. Do your research... and then comment;)
