As an alternative to aluminum/aluminium foil, you could simply paint with a satin or gloss paint, or apply a satin/gloss varnish.
As an alternative to trying to free-hand the rhombus frames, you could use drywall mesh tape (as suggested by Terrainisaur). The latter can even be painted before sticking it on.

For the window mullons you can get plastic grids aka plastic canvass from your local crafter store to save you some time.

This is very cool. I like using the foil as window you could even use a marker on it and color the windows red blue greens violet or a mixture of colors. Oh I see you paint them up nice.
Chris P. Bacon yeah you Can also use golden chocolate's wraps. But i'd really recommend using a mesh to do the grid if the windows instead if just using a Pen.
Yes I have seen others use mesh angled at 45 degrees to make the windows.

Havent thought of modular town buildings, definitely an awesome edition to any crafting dm for really customizable towns with added benefit of needing less storage

To avoid tracing the window rombuses, you can use garden plastic mesh, it is easy to cut and available in black. Just cut it to your window dimensions and hot glue in sandwich between the foil and the wood beams. It also works wonder to hide the inside of a build when you need to keep the windows transparent (if you use tea lights inside, for example), since the eye can only focus on the mesh, and not peer inside the window.

Franklin G. Roberts III actually it is. Except maybe the hinges, these do require some dexterity. And never put water on the wood parts, otherwise it can get pretty ugly and tedious.

That is so cool. When you have 50 videos people are going to be confused about where to find your painting instructions. Maybe you should add a link into the video? It would give you more views as well, and a more stable youtube presence (i.e. peoplw who watch several of your vids will get your other vids as a suggested video later).

Thanks! yeah and they are even better if you use mesh to imitate the lead bindings.
I struggle to find the mesh, but I've been able to use these cooking trays that are like a sturdy net, they work pretty well too! :)
This has got to be one of the most useful crafting videos out there 👌 Keep up the great work! Would have really enjoyed an arched window shop guide since I'm not good at deducing how to do it 😅
The arches are pretty easy to do, as you've Seen at the begining of the tutorial the curves are all cut inside a foam board and the cuts are gonna be widened with a ballpoint pen to enhance the depth of the stone work. Real easy, just make sure the arch is more or less symetrical...you can make a template in cardboard beforhand if you want...
@@LandvaettrsLair Great reply! Making the walls has taken a lot of my time since I don't have double corrugated cardboard to make it quicker, the good thing is that I'm using inch thick foamular to substitute multiple layers of cardboard. Thank you for clarifying ^^

I try to upload as much as possible but i have a full time job so i craft and make the editing if the episodes (very time consuming) on my free time. Maybe i'll do shorter vids sometimes like small tips.

Thanks! Bought them in the insulation section of a hardware store, "foamcore" is not uncommon in Europe...
Do any of your videos show how you make the pattern for the modular walls? Would really like to see how you make it.
Lucas Upright nope i usually fast forward this step, but i'll probably do some new modular walls following the BMC ruin set, i could make a vid explaing. It's not really a regular pattern, you just carve diffent size of stones and different shapes (squared, rectangular, flat) and making sure they are alternated and set to fill the gaps. Also make sure they are more or less horizontally aligned all the way long, every inch or so. Hope this was helpful.

You really ought to get a wood chopper for some of it, tends to make better cuts than scissors and quicker than others...plus you don't have the issue with splintering that can happen. They also don't tend to be that expensive.
AzraelThanatos actually i have a heavy duty cutter i could have used for cutting coffee stirrers and proper cutting plyers for the beams i'm usured as why i didnt use them..they were probably Somewhere hidden some pile of materials my workspace is such a mess right now...
A tiny sliding miter saw would be handy.
Chris P. Bacon i happen to have a Dremel, which is perfect for cutting these kind of beams, i used it on the hoarding built. But this craft used so little wood i didnt bother to plug in the Dremel...
What kind of pen do you use to draw on the aluminium foil?
just really quick question, you do know what "Landvættir" are right?
Solveig Robin Yes i do. Land spirits protecting an area, and sometimes but not exclusively taking the shape if an animal or a powerful being. Even to this day the icelandic flag features the 4 landvaettir protecting the Island. But this belief was way older than that, and imported from scandinavia. This belief might actually be older than most norse gods. Also, did you know landvaettir are the reason longskip's prows were carved and sculpted into monsters, to scare the local Landvaettr of an new untamed land or enemy's territory. Fun fact these prows were often removable because it was considered a diplomatic faux pas to keep the prow while visiting some ally's settlement, risking to damage the spirit(s) protecting their lands.
Nice! knew about that the concept of Landvættir came from norway (obvi) and that it's older than the 4 ones in iceland (obvi obvi) but not about the boat thingy. sorry it's just sooo often I see someone being egdy and have a page on tumblr called "önd" because they are soooo into spirits. the word "önd" means duck. the word they were looking for was "andi" (spirit) or "andar" (spirits). made me laugh for days :)
The piece is very nice. However, it was not the one that was in the video thumbnail. I think if you show a piece in the video thumbnail, then that's the piece you should do the tutorial on. I also think you should've showed the entire painting process. Even if you had time lapsed it, it would've been better than you completely cutting parts out, as long as the time lapse isn't so fast that you can't tell what you're doing... other than that, it was a good video... 👍
Sure, its not ideal, I'll give you that. Than again the propose of making a tutorial is for it to be watched isnt it?I found this miniature to be visually more appealing back then. Also this most defenetly isnt false advetising since pretty much all the steps to make either pieces are shown in vid, the tutorial fills its purpose. The one featured on the miniature is simply round and the door is in the middle, Im sure even neophyte crafters can manage. Concerning the painting process the only missing part is paining a maintone and acually applying highlights I guess I wanted to keep the vid short, again for visibility's sake, most viewers just don't click on videos that are too long.
I find timelapses , though satisfying to watch have little to none instructive value since the fast motion tends to render the technique mostly illegible on a viewer standpoint. I usually tend to favor short clips of the most lisible and appropriate motions to get the technical gesture covered. @@LandvaettrsLair I enjoyed your video, I was just making suggestions. I never said you were false advertising, because you weren't. Even though the video thumbnail was a different one than the one you actually did, it was obviously very similar, and yes, a crafter could definitely figure out how to do the other one by watching your video. I just thought it was odd that you didn't put the one you actually did in the video in the video thumbnail. However, you said in your newer videos you always put the one your doing the tutorial on in the video thumbnail, so 👍... I agree with you about tutorials that are time lapsed, that they don't always do as well as instructional videos. However, I didn't mean that you should time lapse the entire thing, because for the most parts, I prefer videos that show you in real time, I just meant if you're going to take a part out, because it's too long, maybe time lapsing that part would be better than removing it completely. I do understand not wanting to make the videos too long, because people are less likely to watch them. I myself find sometimes I don't want to watch really long videos, and I often don't watch videos longer than 30 to 40 minutes, unless I really want to see it. Weirdly, I don't mind watching videos broken up into parts, even if each part is 20 to 30 minutes, and even if there's like a whole bunch of parts (like part 1, part 2....8, 9)... Anyway, thank you for your reply. I look forward to watching more of your videos in the future 🙂
Could you go over windows more?
What do you mean like a full tutorial? Not on schedule for a forseable future I'm afraid. But you should be able to find stuff online without issue. That said I suggest using mesh for the grid of the windows, looks better.
@@LandvaettrsLair how does the painting go? From what I understand you just put down the foil, then using a permanent pen, you create the bars. Do you avoid priming those windows and just paint on the colors?
From what I remember no priming was involved. The pieces arent manipulated that much and the paint actually sticked pretty well on the surface. What you see was pretty much the process... now you can seal the whole project with some kind of clean coat for more durability if you want, windows included.
The word "facade" is pronounced "fuh-'sod", not "fuh-'sade"
