But how do we get the crank arm off if it's stuck?

Very useful video. I have a 1985 BSA gent's roadster bike and finding info for servicing is difficult. Can the cotter pin be re-used when it is bashed through, or does it get damaged in the process?

You can reuse the cotter pin if it still does what it's supposed to do. The threaded part is the most important. New pins probably need to be filed to fit correctly so that would mean extra work for you.

@@restorationdotbike I didn’t have much problem removing old pins but after installing new ones I run into the problem of arms not being 100% opposite to each other. I’ve ordered more than 10 pins and I guess will have to try again. Any tips regarding alignment? Any help appreciated. My bike is old 80’s Raleigh 3 speed similar to Chiltern.

I've r4ead that the angle of the bevel is critical. Both pins have to be the same or you'll have the cranks at different angles.
Apparently it's best to set the pins in a vice with the flats horizontal and file them to fit, then check to see that both pins are at the same angle.

Pounding against the bearings? That "can " lead to brinnelling or premature pitting of the spindle and cups. Use a cotter pin press made by Var or Park tool. Have spare cotter pins before you start in case you damage one or both. Can't line up the cranks to 180 degrees? Try direction juxtaposition of pins or different left crank arm. Two pins replaced instead of one. Don't have the right tools -parts- technique -experience? Thats why U have troubles.
