the green beans at the beginning are what i would order there for sure. Looks yummy what chef Joanne cooks. Someday i'm going to visit the region. Also to visit a good friend of mine on vancouver island :)
Thanks for giving us a view into the restaurants kitchen, Dan.

boilingaction You're very welcome. Yes, the green beans is very delicious, especially with the fuyi, the fermented bean cake. Thanks for your continued support.

Dan Seto Green bean dish is a must in my family. I think the fermented tofu used is something that originated near Toisan.

Can't find any old school Chinese restaurants in Toronto. I grew up eating at Sai Woo but only on very special occasions. I would love to visit Vancouver some day as my dad and grandpa arrived there back in the 1920s. Thanks for these videos, Dan.

kwanab You're very welcome. Much is changing in Vancouver's Chinatown, but still still a nice place to visit. I hope you do get a chance to visit Vancouver. Thanks for checking out my video on Chinese Village Cooking.

I miss the chicken with sticky rice and the egg foo young. No one makes it as well as Joanne did. It was a sad day when this restaurant closed.

Yes, very sad. The chicken sticky rice was my favorite dish at this restaurant. They were supposed to re-open, but it hasn't happened. Thanks for viewing my video on Chinese Cooking In Old Style Restaurant.

Ho Ho is legendary real Chinese food. It's always been number 1 for me. Consistently great! They were one of the only places that serves authentic chow mein. Sadly most people have only eaten the saucy version which is not what you' d find in a Chinese household .The chow mein that the brothers eat is dry without sauce and is way less greasy and in my opinion is better. Another thing Ho Ho did better than anywhere else was steamed salted egg pork cake and their lo fan lemon chicken will never be equalled . Their fried chicken wings were amazing too. I started eating there as a baby in the late 60s and went nuts for the place thru the 70s. Every Halloween we had a take out feast from there.no restaurant in the world meant more to me.I came from a family that were fortunate enough to eat fancier but I begged to eat at Ho Ho when the rest of the family wanted to go to Golden Crown on E.Hastings or Pink Pearl etc...and don't even get me started on Wo Fat Bakery,BC Royal Cafe and Hong Kong Cafe.Best days of Chinatown .

Nooooooo! It's closing? :( :( :( That makes me so very sad to hear... I would have loved to go there. Old Chinese restaurants in Chinatowns all over the world are closing... and it would seem the Chinatowns of Canada are not safe either. :( I also hope the new owners will keep the old Cantonese traditions as well.

solacium Yes, sad to see these restaurants closing. Our Chinatown is also undergoing a lot of changes. Maybe retaining some of the old with the new is the way to go. Thanks for checking out my video on Chinese Village Cooking In Vancouver's Chinatown.

solacium My family was in restaurant business too and was part of that old school Cantonese restaurant era. However, after watching dad work super hard to give their families the best possible lives, most of those kids end up becoming engineers, doctors or whatever professional careers are available just as long its not in the restaurant business. Only new immigrants go into that biz, and they are not from Guangdong.

I just saw this today:11/8/2015. We don't have restaurants like that anywhere in the San Francisco Bay Area. I wish we did. The Chinese food around here is pretty sad.

+Anthony White I went to that restaurant called "Sam Wo"s" in San Fransico Chinatown. It was a restaurant that was about 100 myears old. They served some old style American Chinese Food. I really like that place but I heard it closed down a few years ago. In general, I agree that it's pretty sad that old style Village Style Chinese Restaurants no longer exist everywhere. Thanks for Checking out my video on Chinese Village Cooking At Foo"s HoHo Restaurant.

That's so sad they are closing. We could use more restaurants like this and less Chinese restaurants that serve General Tsaos Chicken.

Gwen Ap Mannanan Yes, more and more of these old restaurants are closing. When I visit other cities, I try to go to restaurants that have been around for a long time, sometimes owned by several generations. Surprisingly I have never eaten General Tsaos Chicken, but I have heard of it for a long time. There's a recent documentary on who invented this dish. Thanks for checking out my video on Foo's Ho Ho Restaurant. Merry Christmas and best wishes for a Happy New Year.

I have heard of a Chinese dish from Vancouver called "1000 year old fish soup" and it was claimed to be the best fish stew. Has anyone ever heard of it and how to make it?

    • @DanSetoChineseCanadianRootsTV
      @DanSetoChineseCanadianRootsTV  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

+DavidKingOfThieves The closest dish I could think of is Fish Congee With 1000 year old eggs. You make congee the usual way with water and rice. When congee is cooked, add your choice of fish, such as cod. Add some seafood such as prawns, scallops and octopus. Duck eggs are also known as 1000 year old eggs. They are black in colour due a special process to turn them that colour. You can buy these black duck eggs called "hai dun". Some Cantonese restaurants and noodle places do serve these ggs with their congee. The are usually added if you request them. It could be also be possible that the 1000 year old eggs are added during the cooking process of the congee. It's almost like the 1000 year old eggs are blended into the congee. Just for fun, I might try making it this way. As an aside, as a kid, I used to believe 1000 year old eggs were really 1000 years old. I used to eat them with Chinese pickled vegetables. Thanks for your question. Thanks for checking out my video on Chinese Village Cooking.

+Dan Seto (Chinese Canadian Roots TV) Thank you very much for your reply, the person that originally mentioned the soup said it wasn't 1000 year old eggs, but they may not have known if they blended in the congee.
The video was great, I love Chinese food, and it seems Vancouver is the best place to get Chinese food, outside of China, I just need to convince work to send me there for a week :)

I hope you do get a chance to try some of the Chinese restaurants in Vancouver. For me, some of the best ones are small family run restaurants, hole in the wall restaurants and virtually unknown ones. Happy eating!

Unless one has a 35,000+ BTU wok burner... cannot cook this at home. There's a reason why there's cold water running all the time next to the burners.

Home cooking cannot match the cooking with those powerful burners. Thanks for viewing my video.

There used to be a restaurant called Foo's and another one called the Ho Ho. They combined the 2 names for Foo's Ho Ho. I always wonder how they came up with the ho ho name. Thanks for checking out my video on Chinese Village Cooking at the Foo's Ho Ho Restaurant.
