Great video! The tents are still around, but not in clusters. Moved to many back alleys, in between buildings etc. out of view of traffic and police. Look forward to your Christmas tour!!
You're right about that. It's following the pattern of what's happened in U.S. cities on the west coast. Thanks for chrcking out my video and sharing your thoughts.
Very funny Dan. I love your broccoli and chicken with garlic black bean sauce. I retired a few years ago and moved out of Canada to Central America. I grew up in Vancouver, went to Britannia High, and drove taxi there for 5 years while playing R&R in my early teens, and drove transit for the last 20 years. It so sad to see what has happened to the cities in Canada. I last lived in Richmond, but drove through the downtown Eastside for a few years. Really sad. Thanks for the cooking lessons. I ate a lot of meals in Chinatown especially the old HoHo Restaurant.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts. Canada has gone done so much in the last few years. Especially in Chinatown, where there used to be some great restaurants. Thanks for checking out my video. All the best to you.
Great video, Danimal! Love the humanity in this vid. It's good to connect with disenfranchised people on the street who struggle. Thanks for sharing your bao recipe!
Thanks for the feedback. People, including myself, become desensitised to the bad circumstances of the world. Thanks for checking out my video and sharing your thoughts.
Happy Halloween Dan, and thank you for your response. I engage with many people the way you do. Hilarious! 😅 Have you ever put a kung-pao chicken recipe on your channel? I used to stop into a Chinese Fast Food outlet on No. 2 Rd called “The Bamboo Express” The lady & her daughters who took over from another older couple who retired improved and expanded the menu. Her chef/cook (could of been family) was excellent in his use of Chinese ingredients. Excellent kung-pao chicken, a little spicy but delicious. I miss it. 😢
Always interesting talking to people. Seems like people respond to the Danimal personal better than me! I have made chicken recipes similar to Kaung Pac chicken but omitting the spicy ingredients because I having problems eating spicy foods these days. I'll have to check out "The Bamboo Express" to see if it's still there. Sometimes the small family restaurants cook better food than high end restaurants. Thanks for checkoing out my video. Are there good Chinese restaurants where you are living now?
Thanks for giving us an update on the East Hastings Street homeless situation, as well as the Bao recipe. The late, great comic George Carlin did a whole N.I.M.B.Y. routine.😆
Thanks for letting me know about the George Carlin routine. I checked it out. His comments back in the day still apply today. Thanks for checking out my video.
BTW. If you go to the New Town Bakery in Dan's video when he is outside under the sign you will see a giant bamboo steam basket with lid askew. That's very neat. Wish I was at that bakery now!
Funny thing is I have never noticed that giant steam basket under the sign. I might be thinking about the foodntoo much. I'll have to check it out next time I'm there. Thanks for chrcking out my video Roy. I hope everything is well with you.
Hola Dan once again it’s hard to put a comment after your reply to me on your channel. Only TH-cam would know why. 🤷🏻 Anyway There is one good Chinese restaurant in Cortes, CR about 30 minutes south of where I live called “Kings”. The family immigrated here many decades ago, and the local wannabe Chinese restaurants are really substandard and not owned or run by a Chinese person. I was very disappointed the first time I went there. I’d rather make my own and have all the ingredients I need for what I like to eat. I used to watch @Wok with Yan” produced out of the now CTVBC studios in Burnaby, I still use some of his recipes today. Simple fast and delicious food.
For sure, hard to find good Chinese restaurants anywhere. I agree, Wok With Yan had some good recipes. I met him at a cooking demonstration at the Hudson Bay store in downtown Vancouver many years ago. O still have my copy that he gave us. Thanks for the update. Wishing you continued success in your Chinese cooking adventures.
Yay Alice Cooper returned for another Halloween! Happy Halloween to you and your Mom. I never made Bao before, gonna give it a go, since T&T's Website has cheap mail delivery.
The name of the school is called Mon Keang School and they teach Standard Cantonese. It's located inside the Wongs' Benevolent Association Building at 123A East Pender Street. I'll put this information in the description underthisvideo. Thanks for asking about the school. There is a story that CBC Network just did on it. One of the organizers mentioned to me there is a demand for Sai Yip dialect but that is currently not offered right now. Thanks for checking out my video.
@@DanSetoChineseCanadianRootsTV If you watch old Hollywood movies from the 30's to 50's, whenever a movie is set in China, even Shanghai, Beijing, etc., almost all the "locals" speak Sai Yip. Most actors were Toisanese and studios would also pickup extras from LA's Chinatown. Jimmy Cagney was a friend of cameraman James Wong Howe who was from Toisan. Cagney picked up some Sai Yip and being a singer got the tones right unlike other actors like Korean or Japanese actors who often played Chinese characters.
@@HadenoughEnt Thanks for the interesting update. So much has changed nowadays. Our Sai Yip dialect is losing ground and even the standard Cantonese is starting to fade as well,
Hi Randy, Here are 2 restaurants in Calgary's chinatown. Great Taste Chinese Restaurant is located at 123 2nd Ave. S.E. Sometimes it is really good and most times it is pretty good. It's open until 10:00 p.m. only. The second restaurant is called U & Me Restaurant located at 233 Centre Street S.W. Suite 201. They are open until 4:00 A.M. daily. Food here is pretty good but not exceptional by Calgary standards. I have some Chinese restaurant reviews for Calgary which I hopefully can post up by the time you arrive in Calgary on December 8. Thanks for checking out my video.
Dynamo, what happened to Dan? You're driving Dan's car. Are you Dan's alter-ego? Dynamo is a very risky guy going under the crane. I'm calling PD that Dan is missing...Happy Halloween to all of Dan's viewers and to Dan's family, especially his mother. 👻👁🧟
