- It took 20 years to finally do it, but we're swapping out our beefy 727 TorqueFlite automatic for a modern TKX 5-speed! We go to the Tremec experts, Silver Sport Transmissions, and radically change how Mopar Connection Magazine's 1969 Dodge Charger R/T "Brazen" runs, cruises and lays down gnarly burnouts!
Not only that, but we shaved off nearly 100lbs. in total weight, lowered our operating temperature and increased our highway fuel mileage - and we'll show you every step of the process. Huge thanks to the team at SST as well as Adam at Knoxville Driveline for making this build possible.

It's refreshing to see how many people take pride in their work. It's not even their vehicle, and they go the extra mile. I got the feeling that even if the camera wasn't on them, they would act the same. Brazen is a whole new beast now.
I cannot agree with this more!
Man I am happy for you. It's hard these days to find quality parts and equipment for cars like these
For sure! It’s even harder to find companies who take the time to make sure that their products work and fit right! Thankfully, SST totally understands Mopars!
Ok I don't always watch videos this long, but this time I did! Totally worth it to see your excitement when you got behind the wheel! Thanks for making my day! Keep up the great work, and take good care of that beautiful Charger! 😍
Ha, ha, that’s awesome! Thank you!
Awesome video man! There's nothing like banging gears. Especially, in a Mopar musclecar.
Ask the MoParty organizers to bring back the Stick Shift Class, we would love to see that Charger ripping through the gears out there.
Thanks! Will do!
Great video and plenty of detail. I would love to see a video like this for installing either a Tremec TKX or Tremec Magnum an A-Body. I have a 4 speed, but an overdrive would be really nice to have.
I don’t think SST has done that. Ours was the first B-body to get their “final version” of their TKX kit. Adapting these transmissions take quite a bit of work.
Right on time again, Kevin. Planning my swap from 727 to TKX for this year. Thanks for the attention-to-detail on this installation!
Glad to help!
I wish I had found you before hand but!
I went with Silver State myself!
Went from a 3 speed automatic with a 4,000 stall B&M to the Tremec Magnum 6 speed 😁 they were simply amazing they put the entire kit together for my car, and again perfect fit, I’m having it installed at Car Effex in New Jersey (I no longer have a shop to work on it myself) and they got the transmission shipped faster than I thought possible! Came with everything that was needed to install and Car Effex charged me less than $3k to install it.
Totally worth it $8,437.56 to save on fuel and actually have something that won’t bounce off the rev limiter in 3rd gear at anything close to half throttle!
They are sending pictures of the build but I will be doing a video or two once I pick it up with the upgrades!
Next is a full suspension upgrade to actually make sure I survive 750 WHP in a car that is the same age as I am 😅
Holy cow! That sounds amazing!
@@moparconnectionThank you so much! Yeah I am happier than a clam right now!
I can’t wait for that first drive because the car is so powerful, but 3 seconds after I put my foot down the fun is over! 😂😂😂 it’s like brake, gas go! Boom firstsecondthirdholyhell😮😮😮gameover🥲
It’s a new motor build and I don’t want to blow the engine because I’m over rev’ing.
I literally cannot mat the pedal without it bouncing off the limiter 1/2 second after hitting it.
But I think the worst is being on the expressway and being close to redline in 3rd gear and a KIA Sorento thinks they are doing something because they walked away at 117 MPH 🥺it’s like NOOOOOOOOOO!!! I AM GEAR LIMITED YOU FOOLS!!!!
But no more 😈 the Devil shall eat now Drag strips, auto cross, stop light 🚦 beware! The King has returned!
Doesn’t matter now but I ordered a 4 speed floor hump from Keisler for a 70 A body around 2004-2005 and they sent me a floor hump for an E Body and by the time I realized it they were out of business. Never knew they became Silver Sport Transmission. I still have the receipt and the floor hump.
Have you installed it yet?
No sir I have not. Ended up buying one from Brewers Performance.
Kevin to SS Trans Tech..... Hey SS Trans tech, I only use 3 limbs when I drive my car! SS Trans Tech... Hold my beer! Good job as usual ... also like the man that made your drive shaft!!! Old school stuff there...
The guys at Knoxville Driveline are awesome, and amazingly fast.
So what is the torque rating on the TKX? will it hold 900 lb feet?
No, on paper they state 700lbs. but Sick Week racers are using the TKX and making nearly four digits. We talked with McLeod and they assured that the RXT dual clutch was strong enough to hold the 800hp that our future 572 Hemi will make.
Glad you like it. If I ever did my visa over again the opposite would be the latter, I would not do a my Keisler T56 Magnum and do a Hp70 8speed... Older now and its easier to drive and a much better transmission in many ways..
Right on!
Nice, there is no comparison in the fun factor between banging gears and automatics.
Amen! I’m a believer!
I have a 68 Coronet with a 383 Big Block and 727 Torqueflight 3 spd automatic. It's around 450 hp. I'd like to keep the automatic but add overdrive. What do you suggest? Thanks. Great video!
SST offers a 4L60E option called an A41 Overdrive. It works great for applications making less than 600HP. A Gear Vendor is rock solid, but you might find it a bit overkill.
@@moparconnection Thanks for your reply. I'll look into it!
What was the minor issue/adjustment you had on the initial road test?
We changed out the speedo gear.
Kevin one more clarifying question do you have to loosen the headers to get the starter out or can you just get it out without doing anything inquiring minds want to know thank you very much even now with the 5 speed?? Was there any specifications on the RPM's that you are able to shift it at. is there a limit on the high end, just curious mine runs at 7000 rs when letting her fly I am used to a heavy duty clutch just curious as to what kind of pedal pressure that this has being hydraulic and also a diaphragm spring thanks Kevin
Nope, I can wriggle it out without touching the headers.
So silver sport offers 3 different gear ratios… which ones did u get if u don’t mains listing it…
We went with the .68:1. We actually talked about it pretty early in the video.
do you have any plans for the over drive unit ?
For the 727 and GV? Not currently, but I won’t split them. I already had folks asking for the GV.
What’s your rear diff ratio?
4.10’s
A couple things:
This kit is close to 7k without labor.
Dialing in the bellhousing is typically a nightmare.
If you want a modern transmission this is a good kit. I just can't afford it.
On an A-Body there's a lot more cutting including torsion bar crossmember and massaging the floor. I hope Silver Sport comes out with an A-Body video soon.
We showed you each step of dialing-in the bell housing. Thankfully, SST takes the time to machine it within a couple thousandths. And the TKX doesn’t require nearly as much cutting to the A-body as the previous TKO.
@@moparconnection I did see that part. And thank you for showing it. It looks easy because the people doing it knows what they're doing. For people like me that kind of know it's still a nightmare. Thank you for the upload
That’s fair and many don’t have dial indicators set up for such a procedure. Slamming in a Torqueflite is demonstrably easier for sure but a manual has radically changed the way I drive this car.
If you are doing a HP install with your automatic installation you pull all of the guts out, bolt the bare case to the engine and dial indicate in the housing on the oil pump locating diameter. That's what A & A Transmissions had us do on my brother's 650 HP, 520 cu pump gas engine in his Roadrunner. If the case is not in the proper location, you need special offset dowel pins, RobbMC makes those. I haven't done that yet on my 999 trans in my Duster, but plan to this winter.
That’s a lot of money
Yeah, it’s pretty top tier stuff
Well I have to say thank you Kevin very much for the video you did a great job and the boys at the silver sport did a great job I'm letting you document it so that we could really see what's going on and for a person who is a visual who doesn't really get a lot from reading stuff this was excellent I will definitely be thinking of maybe putting one of these in one of my cars and also one question what are your headers and can you put that mini starter on without taking the headers off thanks for the video and have fun with that radical car she looked like she was really peeling the gears out there excellent video thank you
These are Doug’s headers (2” tubes to a 3.5” collector); and no, I can wiggle the Powermaster starter in and out without removing the header.
Where can I subscribe to mopar magazine? I'd rather have delivered to my house . I'd rather read it than listen to this . I used to get it delivered
We don’t print the magazine, saving us money on printing and mailing costs - thereby allowing us to give it to you free! Just go to www.moparconnectionmagazine.com and sign up for the email newsletter.
@moparconnection I'd rather have it delivered to my house besides I like reading the other articles that's in the magazine
Sadly, print magazines are dead - even Hot Rod is quarterly. I spent half my career in print, but nobody’s buying them, so we’re 100% digital and free!

Could use more content and less of that stupid music! You got a great looking car there.
We kept in all of the pertinent details necessary to replicate this installation at home. The time-lapse footage was just us doing busywork.
