3:06 They live in the Underdark because if they were caught operating on the surface the Gith would hunt them down. The Githyanki for example are fond of aerial assaults so those wouldn't work in the Underdark.
Now I wanna play a Mindflayer wizard. One who devoted itself to the benefit of the colony and left the hive to gather information and food. He finds that wizards are RICH with knowledge and devours them gaining their knowledge and their beliefs to the point he discovered rumors of powerful magic such as “wish” or “true polymorph” capable of bending reality to its whim! This could give the hive an empire yet! But when he returns with the knowledge of arcane magic, he is shunned and is exiled for the knowledge he gained. With his purpose lost, he would take on the collective purpose of all the wizards he ate. Learn. Pursue the boundaries of all reality. And since he has no home to go to, he will inscribe his knowledge for someone to find one day. He would accept a job in return for knowledge of any kind but knowledge of the world or arcane in some kind would interest him most. And he per chance may be swayed if it would be of “great benefit” as he lost his initial purpose he would seek praise.
I think it was in an old 2e book that mentioned the problem with mind flayers mages is they can exert a power that the Elder Brain can't control. This is no blinksy, and not to mention that Illithids mage won't be getting access to new spells unless it barters with or fights other mages, both of which could lead to the colony being exposed.
Yeay Mindflayers! Something that's missed in current editions is the whole 'they're refugees from the future thing'. I think it's in the book 'Lords of Madness'. It's awesome, they're going to have a huge empire but it's going to be totally destoryed, so they escaped into the past. Crazy!
6:54 I read this is because the Elder Brain can't make use of arcane or divine spell casting after that mind flayer's brain has been added to its collection. All mind flayers dream of becoming one with the Elder brain believing they will live forever as part of it... except really their consciousness and personality is snuffed out by the Elder Brain...not that any Elder Brain is about reveal this little secret.
Since I am obsessed with mind flayers, I thought I'd add on some stuff that you didn't mention (in this video) that I liked about them. Pets- Ooblex(and black ooze) are thought to be either a mind flayer creation or an intervention of Juiblex Flumphs live on their residual psionic energy and live on the outskirts of a colony Brain golems are animated pieces of brain from the elder brain usually there for a short amount of time. Ceremorphosis with a roper to create a urophion Slaves - grimlocks- twisted humans over generations Kuo toa - crazy Fish people that ran away from servitude and from their imagination can now create pseudo gods. There is a small adventure about a rogue mind flayer controlling a small group of those Derro- Duergars who were unable to run away Thralls -over a course of some intensive days with the help of the entire colony, the mind of humanoid is change to accept them as new masters They modify their slaves to give them natural armor and claws Tools: Psionic stones that cause certain emotions A piece of the elder brain for communication and reference Shield that they can see through from a distance and even use their mind blast A special whip that helps them with psionic attacks A special suit to keep their skin moist in arid places (A lot is from lords of madness and the forgotten realms wiki)
Hey, Jorphdan! Im here to bug you again for individual Dale videos! ;) lol Like Shadowdale, Featherdale, Harrowdale, Battledale, etc. Im currently running a game for my wife in the Dalelands and these would be SUPER useful! Thanks in advance and keep up the great content!
The gith deserve a whole video. They are the mix of all the best "slave" races, breed over countless milenia... Think about it, they are one of the most interesting races written for DND.
Long ago in 2e I had a campaign thought up around good-aligned illithids trying to stop powerful evil illithids from taking control of the Spelljammer to defeat their world. The PCs find a wrecked ship of a good aligned illithid with a simple ring that serves as an Ultimate Helm. The unwitting PC then ends up on the Spelljammer after a terrible fight against an evil illithid ship (which the Spelljammer ends with a sphere of annihilation from its tail), forced to land. The captain provides them harbor but is killed by an evil illithid that made it on to the ship. Naturally the resident illithid among the population is blamed. Eventually a conspiracy is revealed (can't remember what it is) that causes a civil war to break out, until illithid ships from both sides show up, one side razing the Spelljammer's surface. The populace unites to fight against the ship threat. The PCs must race to take the Spelljammer back from the new evil illithid captain, then captain the Spelljammer themselves to turn the tide in the battle. Eventually they are provided a Smalljammer on which to pursue the head evil illithid ship and end the evil illithid threat. It wasn't a bad idea, just ambitious and hard to organize, especially fleshing out the NPCs that live on the Spelljammer. I read the book The Ultimate Helm in one day to give me at least some ideas.
In honor of Baldur’s Gate 3... How would you role play a Mind Flayer? Would it be different if it was a community? A Ulitharid? An exile? An Elder Brain?
Think about: Two Illithid brood and host brother brothers. The tadpoles and the host bodies were both brothers. One mindflayer is a brain surgeon and the other is a psychologist. They're both respected in their fields and productive citizens in the community. Of course they're rivals, each downplaying the others philosophy of brain health.
I played a mindflayer wizard named Cuddles who just wanted to be everyone's friend, "he" (technically illithids are hermaphroditic) was sent on a fake quest because the illithid colony was ashamed of him. Had the uncomfortable habit of absentmindedly tentacle-caressing other pc's heads.
I remember reading about Mind Flayers keeping their tadpoles in the same pool as the Elder Brain, but I don't remember reading about tadpole metamorphosis through the transformation of humanoid hosts. Was that new to 3e or 4e?
Having watched Stranger Things 3 now, I would say some ideas were borrowed loosely over all 3 seasons. And if not, it's one hell of a coincidence how somethings developed and more so with things not ultimately used
I imagine there's probably some kind of fairly strict population controll going if only because a bigger population means they'd need to hunt down more hosts/food brains and that sort of thing would increase the risk of exposing the colony.
What about Nymphs ? Does baby illithids placed in Nymphs generate beautiful Mind Flayers, so beautiful that you would be blind by look at them? Well, possibly that individual would be free from the concerns about die at old age. On the other hand, is interesting to imagine what effect such a monster would have in the environment. Like "Old Brain daddy married a decorator" perhaps.
1:32 One Dwarfoid (Creatures that are like Dwarves. Humanoid if you think things need to be defined relative to the least interesting/important species) brain a month. None of the 5E books provided a number for how much they had to eat. Thank you! This puts a pretty hard mathematical cap on the size of a colony.
I wouldn't say I got tired of FR, but I do run other games. I have a Greyhawk Saltmarsh game currently, before that I was running a Hot Springs Island game.

Dracos Diabolis, Oooh... Now THAT is what I like to see in the Forgotten Realms. OH! What if an alchemist with great knowledge of all forms of the arts (arcane, divine, and psionic) manages to get an Illithid worm and get someone to be the host, while at the same time isolate that individual from ANY other Illithid colony and keeping it alive, think of the possibilities that would make out of it! -Double D
Y’know usually I’m all like, “genocide, hey that’s not cool. I don’t much like genocide, I tell ya.” but these Mind Flayer fellas really aren’t very nice.

Good timing after the Baldur’s Gate trailer dropped. Can’t ever get enough of the illithid.
I'm doing a walkthrough as one. So fun
We should see some illithids in the next D&D movie. Have Edgin Darvis and his team go back to the Underdark.

Sounds like a member of Iolaum's colony.
How ya not gonna get killed on sight though?
We had some insane illithids in our long term campaign a few weeks ago. Scared one of our player characters.

Cool ! :-)
Good prep for the upcoming BG3 game. :-)
"Only a powerful mind or godly strength can open this door"
Or the Knock spell. That works more than often than I expect.
Ik one theory I've heard before is Gith were once humans that mutated into something more from the mindfpqyer influence
I am really interested in their spelljammer. Is there some video about kinds of spelljammers?
Yes, we need this Jorphdan!
Iv been doodling illithid hybrides since 3e. This beholder one seems like a good basis for house holder of AJ, thanks Jorphdan!

After watching multiple videos about dwarves I learnt one important lesson.
If your a dwarf don’t dig too deep.

JORFDAN
Are all illithid capable of laying eggs, but only a select few are tasked by the Elder Brain to do so?
I imagine there's probably some kind of fairly strict population controll going if only because a bigger population means they'd need to hunt down more hosts/food brains and that sort of thing would increase the risk of exposing the colony.

Contrast the mind flayer from the aboleth; the things mind flayers hate most
Imagine an ullithid dracolich. Goddamn.
So what kind of Mind Flayer is the Emperor in Bg3?
Is this the best video...we will see "Thune".

great video
The Mindflayers fate is cyclical.
Get big.
Get slaves.
Get creative.
Get destroyed by psyonic slaves.
Awesome vid.
Huh that man was telling the truth on that Facebook post. There was an illithid video.
BAULDERS GATE 3 LETS GO
How is the Elder brain created?
They also created the Oblex
True!
I still pronounce it "Dwear-garr" (dwɛɹ.ɡɑɹ) which is the correct Germanic pronunciation
Githzerai seem so much more OP than the yankees
Finally!
I play a Mind Flayer in our Forgotten Realms campaign.
The PH is Thune.

Is your new campaign DCC?
Nope I'm back to playing D&D 5e. Ghosts of Saltmarsh and a homebrew game!
perhaps they shun magic because it's the reason their society collapses in the future and is thus the reason they travelled to the past.
Do you ever get tired of FR? In your campaign do you run everything out of FR?
I wouldn't say I got tired of FR, but I do run other games. I have a Greyhawk Saltmarsh game currently, before that I was running a Hot Springs Island game.
