Hey bud im todd in tennessee hope you can make it over here sometime, just want to let you know i appreciate your music,i lost my wife of almost 30 years a little while back and alot of your songs have really helped me cope, when everything feels like its crashing in on me i put my phones on and zone out with you all , and i can get by thankyou and keep rockin you are one of the best guitarists ive heard in a long time and ive been around awhile
I've noticed that the less winding around the tuner, the less stretching required. Steel strings don't really stretch more that the tension you are putting on them while tuning up, so it's really a matter of them settling in place at the bridge and around the tuning posts.
Yes, finally some people realized that. For the past few years, since I came to civil engineering program in uni, finally I understood how that shit works. You DON'T stretch the string FOR "stretching the string", you DO the some stretch FOR settling the strings on the bridge, nut and tuner.
You stretch the string to essentially remove any stretch. The structure has some inherent stretch that must be pulled out of the metal before it becomes fully hardned. Eventually it will fatigue and snap if you are a heavy bender. If I am wrong, how is it that you can lock a string at the nut and the saddle of a Floyd, "Stretch" the string, and a low "E" for instance will flat two to two amd a half steps, then do it again only less a second and third time?
It depends on how good your tuners are. If you're tuners are cheap, stretching the string will cause the tuner to rotate back, esentially detuning. I use a ton of winds on my top 3 plain strings and they stay in tune just fine
Bea, this video (that I clicked on to have something to absentmindedly focus on because the kids are watching some garbage) literally changed my entire attitude toward my main guitar. I've had a Floyd on my main guitar for about a decade, and for the last 2 years, I've been struggling to find a solution to the problem I have with it. My strings pop out of the saddles with a full bend, no matter how tight or loose I set them. I was considering ditching floyds forever, despite my love for them. You have saved my love for Floyds just by briefly showing me such a great little add-on.
Definitely needed this video considering the recent change to Ernie Ball by the rest of Dorje; we gear nerds MUST KNOW ALL THINGS GEAR! Oh, does Dave have a video talking his recent change to Ernie Ball? Would love to see a video of him talking about his change.
That feature debuted on the cheap "floyd rose 2" bridges on Kramer Striker guitars. It got a bad reputation but they are so unbelievably easy to restring that I don't replace mine with "original floyd rose". I just make sure the knife edges are good and use new posts along with a heavier block. Stayed in tune for 14 years in various closets (hot, cold, humid) in a soft gig bag.
My experience with NYXL's is that they tend to brake too easily, especially when bending/stretching unwound strings. I bought 8 sets of them when they first came out and found out the problem with durability. Moved back to standard XL's and I'm happier than ever, no more string snapping.
I've only ever broken one nyxl. I was restringing my strat, and it snapped the B. However, I've had that happen on that strat with many other strings, so I wouldn't blame it on the nyxl. I've put at least 20 sets of them on my PRS and Ibanez 7 and, as far as I can remember, have never had one break. I use the 10's
Thanks for the tip on the speedy loaders. Going to see if I can find those. On another note, I put a set of your Bareknuckle Silos in my Tremonti SE and it's a beast now!
I'm glad you have more luck with d'addarios than me. For some reason my treble e-string always snaps. Same thing happened to my father. Never happens with any other brand. GHS nickel rockers are my fav.
I am telling anyone who will listen about the D'addario NYXL strings. They sound so friggin good and last forever and are rock solid on tuning. Amazing strings, and I have tried them all.
I tried the NYXL's and what they advertise about them is quite true. They are very very stable, even from the start, and they last at least 4 times longer that the other strings I use (for example, the basic d'Addarios and Ernie Ball slinkies). You pay a premium for them, but considering how long they last, it is well worth it.
I've been playing Ernie Ball Slinky's for the last, oh jeez, like 8 years now. I just grabbed a pack of the NYXL 10-46s for Drop D on my Ibanez S and I'm really digging em. They're bright and have a real nice harmonic quality to them that's hard to place but I like them a bunch.
this video was useful about what strings Rabea uses. i just got my Fender Stratocaster restrung with Elixir 10 gauge which to me are my favourite strings I've used so far !!!
I think Pete mentioned in and Andertons video, that you shouldnt stretch strings anywhere but behind the nut and near the bridge because it pulls open the windings and allows them to corrode quickly.
I was really surprised the first time I saw this video. I had no idea that you used such thick strings. I used to use 11-56 in my Gibson Les Paul, but had to turned back to a thinner gauge. I'm thinking of starting to use the NYXL's. Cheers, Rabea!
Speedy loaders! Never heard of them, but I will be buying a set, because I love my Floyd equipped guitars, but HATE stringing them. Cheers, man. Thanks for that. Also - NYXL for the win. Best strings I've ever used.
I use d'addario, the nyxl is amazing set to play. I use 10-46 for E standard too E flat, same for drop d and drop c#. then I am planning to get 12-60 for drop c and lower.
I love watching these `behind the scenes` recordings, wich you should do more often! Im a strat guy myself, so breaking strings or hard work stringing arent much of a thing. Will try those daddario NYXL, though... 15+ years and still havent settled on a brand...
I would love a video on the pick-ups you use. I know that you've been using bare knuckle for a while know, I'd love a video on which ones you use and why you use them.
For real! I'm currently experimenting with the nyxl 11-56 on a 25.5 scale guitar for drop B and it feels good not to tight not to loose I might consider going up to 12s on the higher strings but I dont feel it is a necessity these strings in drop c# however would be crazy to bend in my opinion. If you like 10s in standard the nyxl 11-56 would feel great for Drop C and if you like 9-9.5 in standard the high strings feel similar to that in Drop B with the low strings feeling just right
Hi Bea. Any chance of a lesson on your solo in Wicked Game? Monumental, played with such feeling, incorporates some great techniques and scales. Blows me away every time I listen to it.
Saw you guys yesterday in Karlsruhe (you pronounced it right) and was really enjoying the show! Hope to see you soon again on stage and thanks for all the insight. But feel free to play a longer set the next time
I used fender strings, ernie ball in various sizes, and d'addario nickel wound 10/46 and by far the best in my opinion are the d'addario's. GHS is the next I want to try but in the end I'd stick to d'addario
Honestly there are no "bad" strings in my eyes. I just buy the strings that have a gauge that I like. Which at this point is 11-64 d'addario nyxl. I love the EB cobalts but 10-62 or 11-58 isn't heavy enough for me.
I've used D'Addario strings for decades. Great strings but I'm experimenting with Dunlop 8-40 Billy Gibbons lab series because I've developed arthritis in my fretting hand.... The D'Addario NYXL 8's are great and last long but are pretty expensive.....
awesome! we needed this vid! haha..i used to use Ernie ball back in the day in high school...been using daddario for years now but I'm gonna try out StringJoys..hand made in Tennessee usa, Ariel Posen gave me the heads up, half sizes and custom sets available!
My preferred strings are the D'addario hybrid set (10-42) but my most recent string change was done in quite a hurry using the closest available strings which were Fender 9s. To be honest, the Fender ones are not that great, they've only been on for a little while and now my tone sounds dead and flat. But I almost exclusively used D'addario :)
I just tried like a week or two ago to string my guitar with the new paradigm Ernie Balls but as soon as I got to the A string it snapped when I tuned it to pitch. Power to you if it works for you, but for me D'addarios are the strings that work the best.
Interesting that you take the nut fully apart. I was always too worried that I'd lose a piece of it so I just loosened it enough to get the strings under.
When you say "Drop C"....do you mean just the low E dropped to C or ALL the strings dropped down 2 steps? I've been using 11-60 for Drop C and it still wont intonate on that low string, though i've only got a strat, not a chapman with a more suitable scale length
When he refers to Drop C he means ACTUAL Drop C, which is CGCFAD. It's the same as as Drop D but another step down. The intonation issues you're having might be down to the fact that .60 is quite a high gauge for a low C. Most guitarists who play in that tuning tend to use a .54 or .56. Realistically a .60 is more suitable for Drop B.
Intonation on a strat bridge is kinda hard because they don't have good range. You can intonate all the way down to drop A on a 25.5 inch scale of you have a floyd or fixed string through style bridge. I'd avoid a Tune-o-matic like the plague if you're looking to down tune
I (as well as many other guitarists, I'm sure) string my strings with the ball-ends at the tuning pegs as I find restringing on double-locking tremolos is faster that way, but I guess there isn't an option for speedloader Floyds unless I'm mistaken?
Tip for Floyd Rose (etc) nerds: Get a polytuner. Then you can strum, tune up each string quickly (I usually just move it towards being in tune, just quickly), strum again, repeat until you get real close and then tune carefully. Polutunes are perfect when doing this :)
Really enjoy vicariously living the rockstar dream thru the videos you guys share \m/ P.S. Chappers is getting more and more like David brent every time i see him is this intentional? XD
Have you not experienced any problems with the new saddles? I used to have a tremolo that came with that type of saddles in my BC Rich, and it went out of tune very easily; but maybe it was only the overall quality of the piece and not the saddles. Who knows. Now I put a real 80's Floyd Rose from a Kramer and it's much, much better.
Hey Rabea, are the speedy loaders stable? I would imagine that without the strings locking in the saddles on the bridge like the usual floyd, they would be more prone to getting out of tune when using FR.
Lucas Dry having toured with them on my relic for about a year, I can say they're amazing! Trust I never have tuning is these days. Sometimes you do but generally super stable!!
People say that but they don't even use it, and when you think about, you ARE locking the string in the end, except you are locking it with the ball ending. It locks there, on a straight line, in my opinion when you bend the edge of the string to lock it with the locking block is much more prone to the stringing de-winding, snapping or just getting loose.
Personally Elixir Nanowebs are the ultimate string for me. But i do use NYXLs sometimes and they are definitely next on the list imo. Beats Ernie Ball Cobalts for sure (can't stand ernie ball anymore).
elixir strings are amazing, they last forever. my only problem with them is they take time to break in, sometimes even take 3 days to start staying tuned on my guitar.
Wouldn't the speed loaders ruin the entire purpose of the double locking trem? I mean, I dont ever use my floyd and its blocked entirely, but for a standard floyd set up it seems like they would ruin tuning stability with trem use.
I prefer D'addario as well. Although, even after trying NYXL, I still prefer the normal nickel plated ones. Just something about them, I dunno. Inexpensive, resonant, effective :) Although I use chromes (flatwounds) on my bass, as I use fretless
Well, I just realized that I never leave 1 or 2 spins of string on the machine heads (schaller locking tuners). I've never noticed any tuning stability problems but now I'm wondering if I should leave more string around the machines...
used to have a single locking floyd with those kinds of speedloading saddles, and it went out of tune all the time although i tried doing everything to fix it i just had to replace the saddles so i bought a new floyd because I had extra money
Like the video. Sorry I am a ErnieBall fan. But I would like to know what brand of tubes you use in both of your Krakens? Thanks and have a great time on the rest of the Dorje tour.
I have Paradigm betas, which send me great people from Ernie's in their beta testing program, but still... Elixir Nanoweb forever! Still best strings on the planet for me. :)
Is that really such a bad thing? He'd been with D'Addario for an age, and he explained that the Paradigm strings were the thing that won him over - what would you or I do in that position? It's worth remembering endorsements aren't friendships, they're quid pro quo business arrangements.
Exactly... I changed brands all the time, cuz I want feel better when I play. I used DD, SIT strings, EB, maybe even some other brands. The, I discovered Elixir nanoweb and I'm so happy with them! But if some day will be available strings better than Elixir, I will change them. Every one has own tase and that's right I think! Diversity is important, especially in music and other art. :)
I tried many different types of strings over the past years and DAddarios became my favorite and have been for the last few years. I tried the NYXL's about a year ago and love them and use them exclusively. They last, you can bend the shit out of them and they stay in tune, and like you say they break in REAL easy with just a couple quick string stretches. Nice vid Rabea! What gauges do you use for standard tuning?
@rabeamassad Great video! I will be restringing my Ibanez rgd 6 string soon. Really want to try out the 11 to 56 pack your using. My question is, will the string tension be too tight in a 26.5 inch scale tuned to drop c? Im a massive fan of yours and you've inspired me to play more ambient music along with the heavy stuff. Keep up the good work.
Yes, me too I have always liked D'Addario electric strings - a lot of my friends prefer Ernie Ball but not for me, I have been using them since the 1980's. Prior to that i liked Dr Thomstick flat wounds!
Tried paradigm 56-12...... Still sticking with nyxl 60-12. The g string sounded weird enough I never consider paradigm an option really. Plus the brass wrap at the ball end hinder in wraparound bridge
Steve Vai and Joe Satriani use 09-42. And if you're a Sithu Aye fan, he uses 9's as well, though he tunes to Drop D. Personally, I like to replace the 42 with a 50.
Hey Bea, how often do you change strings on your guitar when you are not on tour, just playing rehersals and doing your videos and are you using some cleaner like Dunlop or Fast fret or Tone Gear String Cleaner? BTW great concert with Toska in Czech Republic, hope to see you again soon ;-)
Hi Rabea! I've just received my ML3 Bea and am very happy with it. I'd also like to set mine up like you with 11-52 strings for a drop C tuning. I was wondering wether the saddle comes prepared for these string gagues or if it needs to be filed. Thank you very much for your reply!
GREAT SHOW in Karlsruhe! But: Plz tell your soundguy the kickdrum is WAY too loud. No chance to hear your solo guitar or Robs lyrics! Anyway: Keep on rocking! And come back to Germany!! You are among the best rock acts I have ever seen!
Hey Rabea, do you think the headstock/tuning pegs configuration affect the perceived tension on your guitars? I use 11-56 for Drop C# in an SG (24.75 scale, angled, 3+3), and the same set for Drop C in an Ibanez (25.5 scale, angled, 6 inline). Tension is enough and sufficient to me in these guitars. I got a schecter KM-6 (25.5 scale, angled, 3+3) and wanted to tune it to Drop B, with 12-60. They felt too flabby, mainly in the 4th and 3rd strings, the ones farther away from the nut. So I wonder if that's why you use a somewhat heavy gauge, to compesate due to the reverse headstock on your guitars. Do you actually worry about the actual tension, or go by what feels good? Cheers!
Arturo Hernández If you're tuning to drop b I think you might as well buy a 26.5 scale length or above 7 string. I have one tuned down a half step to b flat and use an 8 string set. I use the 74 gauge (8th string) as the 7th string and use the 64 gauge (7th string) on my drop d flat Les Paul. I like really heavy bottom strings. Try it to see if you agree. I reckon the headstock should have little or nothing to do with tension. Scale length is the main factor
Tone Pot Thanks for the suggestion. I might look into a 26.5 scale, but I'm not confortable with 7 strings, which I think leaves me with some Ibanez offerings, like the RGD series, or one-offs like the RGR621XEBC. I agree it would be easier to just get a 7 string Schecter. Lower than Drop A, I guess I would need a baritone. About the headstock and tuning pegs position affecting the tension, it was about the "perceived" tension, basically, just "feel". Looking around, I assume it is just my mind playing games (www.liutaiomottola.com/myth/perception.htm#mozTocId49558), but I swear I read something akin to that somewhere.
Hey guys, just a quick one but if anyone is interested in the speedy loaders, here's the link to the eBay store.

Rabea Massaad bea! what was the red guitar you were using ?
Bea srsly man your really looking good with the weight loss

NYXL are killer strings. The company is one of the best i've ever worked with!

D'Addario is the best! Love the balanced XL sets.
I love NYXLs, the break in is nothing. But they're really bright sounding for guitars like telecasters

I've been using d'darrio forever. I love them. I find them to be the best .
Stellar show you gave at the substage. Thank you so much for touring here guys.
I had a 90s Ibby that fed the strings like that. The only issue was ball ends getting stuck in the tube. I learned quickly which brands not to use :)
I always re-string my guitars while having this video playing in the background. Just love Rabea's voice!

The 11-56 set in Drop C#, on a floyd guitar with 25.5 scale, has to be intense to play. That set seems to have strong tension already just in Drop C.
Ha yeah, 11-56 is tight even on a 24 3/4 guitar tuned to Drop C
Love D'addario NYXL's bar their price! I seem to be a bit odd with my tuning in E standard!
So far I love Elixir Strings. Have tried the NYXL once and didn't like em as much.
I will try out the new Ernie Ball Strings though.
linko994 same here, nanowebs are so good
I like the Sfarzo strings. My second choice is good ole Cobalts.
Ye olde X series Jacksons used to have them as a "cheap" option of a floating trem. Did the job, as far as i recall.
thanks for the reply :)
Glad to know that I'm not the only one who uses 11s on Drop C# lol most of the guitarists I know uses 10s.
Great video thanks for posting! I LOVE that solo!!!
Same 😎, i was also in Karlsruhe cool place
I once had the end of a g go through my middle finger. thankfully it passed by the bone, but, I did get a fair tickle out of it.
Wouldn't the speed loaders ruin the entire purpose of the double locking trem? I mean, I dont ever use my floyd and its blocked entirely, but for a standard floyd set up it seems like they would ruin tuning stability with trem use.
Locking tuners are a huge help in restringing
Thank You Bea! Superhelpful!! Blessings and Tone for Days!!!🎸🎼👍😀
I prefer D'addario as well. Although, even after trying NYXL, I still prefer the normal nickel plated ones. Just something about them, I dunno. Inexpensive, resonant, effective :) Although I use chromes (flatwounds) on my bass, as I use fretless
Anyone know where to get the speed loaders now?
Same question!
Well, I just realized that I never leave 1 or 2 spins of string on the machine heads (schaller locking tuners). I've never noticed any tuning stability problems but now I'm wondering if I should leave more string around the machines...
Love the NYXL's.(10-46)
I like stretching strings by hand. I find it very therapeutic 😁
Hey Rabea, are you gonna be uploading a tour vlog? I'd love to see it, thanks.
used to have a single locking floyd with those kinds of speedloading saddles, and it went out of tune all the time although i tried doing everything to fix it i just had to replace the saddles so i bought a new floyd because I had extra money
Hoping for a Dorje tour in India

NYXL's are the best strings I've used in all my years of playing.
Like the video. Sorry I am a ErnieBall fan. But I would like to know what brand of tubes you use in both of your Krakens? Thanks and have a great time on the rest of the Dorje tour.
Huh, and here I thought this is another Ernie Ball Paradigm infomercial.
😎
I have Paradigm betas, which send me great people from Ernie's in their beta testing program, but still... Elixir Nanoweb forever! Still best strings on the planet for me. :)
At least he is sticking to the brand unlike rob, who changed his color (endorsement) like a chameleon as soon as EB Paradigm came out.
I can't find the speedloader :'(

any closer to Australia?
Thanks !
I use 11-56 NYXL's for drop c, tuning any higher feels like I'm going to break something
I use 11-56 ernie ball cobalt on my Washburn tour 24 in Eb standard. It feels like playing bridge cables but it sounds immense.
Hi... 12-60 on E standard here
the show on sunday was great
Hey bea I remember in another video you saying your baritone you use 12-68 I’m guessing your mixing strings? Daddario doesn’t have that as a pack
Rabea, do one about your baritone!
about the gauge...what do you think about the 09-42?... why yes? , why not?...thanks Rabea
Didn’t he say 11-60 for drop C ?
All of a sudden i have the urge to go out and purchase some D'ADDARIO strings.
Looking great man!
@10:16 is chapper's vigorously looking for someone in the crowd?
How do your fingers cope with 11's? Folklore says that SRV had a problem with his fingertips 'cos he preferred chunky strings.
He originally used 13s. They are what caused his hands to hurt. 13s at half step down is way too much tension. He moved to 11s to compensate.
He didn't use 13s. He used a high 13 and a low 58, but the other four were from an 11s set.
Oh man, why didn't I look up Dorje Locations earlier. Karlsruhe isn't too far away from me..
I'm interested in those speedloader saddles..

can you do a restring video doing a tutorial of how you re string all your guitars :)
You've made it, WHAT Strings!!!!!
