Definitely start with an acoustic, in my opinion. It’s easier to play an electric because you don’t need to be too concerned about volume, projection, and tone quality, cos your amp does all that for you. You learn a lot more helpful skills on an acoustic. good luck, and sorry i saw this 5 months late! i try to help where i can :)

beware that there are some critical differences on each instrument (because on one you play from "up" the instrument and the other from "down). Like the left hand, on violin you need to have it supinated to reach efficiently and on the cello you need to be pronated (which anchors your index). On the bow there are also differences, some movements that avoid the bow going to the fingerboard on the violin will make it go there on the cello Mostly is the same and the achivements you get on one get translated to the other

Hi Marcelo! That's so wonderful that you're returning to cello after a long break! I'd be happy to give some tips, did you have any specific topics in mind? I will soon start teaching myself cello. I bought a student cello (very affordable one) because I am not sure how serious I am about it. However, my experience with clarinet was that because of the thicker reed, I fed up multiple times. So I know that things like these make huge difference. My question is whether I should get a decent bow so that my experience is better learning. If bow really makes difference, can you recommend an affordable (100-300$) known brand bow ? If not, thank you anyways! My instrument costed around 500$ but I heard from Violin players, bow makes huge difference.

With some inherited problem, my pinky finger is a little bit bended toward the ring finger, so it will be much shorter than a normal pinky finger for adults. I have the same issue. After 6 months my fingers are able to stretch much further so my pinky can reach much more easily and it will curve a bit better too. It took a lot of trying different arm l positions to find the optimal positioning of the finger, and For a while I did have to lift the other fingers off the fingerboard very slightly and rotate my wrist to be able to reach the note.

Hi Trent! Thanks for your message and congrats on starting your cello journey! I think the 15 minute beginner lesson would be a great start, paired with my Bowhold Guide (it's a long video but pretty comprehensive in how to approach holding the bow and establishing a supple, flexible grip). Do you have a reccomendation for a decent beginner cello that isn't too expensive (but also isnt too cheaply made so that its a waste of money). thank you
Honestly I don't think I can recommend a particular beginner cello brand, I've often found too much variation to be able to recommend anything confidently. I would suggest seeing if any violin shops local to you have cellos in your price range. With a good violin shop, you are at least going to get an instrument that is set up well and is as playable as possible, and that makes a huge difference, especially in the beginning. Hope that helps!
If you're just starting out, I would try a rental first as a lot of entry level beginner cello can have set up issues. In the US, you can get a rental easily through Shar Music or Johnson Strings. Hope that helps!
