it is my birthday today..thanks for the gift of a roxy music reaction..they really are great..listen to their song "Virginia plain" keep em' comin' my rocky mountain friends..Kent
OMG I feel so young listening to this. I feel 12 years old wearing groves into this vinyl, listening to it over and over again. Such a beautiful beautiful song. Like falling in love - there is nothing More than This.
Yay! You gave them a second chance! Mad respect for doing that. Not many reactors would bother doing that after an initial negative reaction. I myself didn’t really ‘get’ them at first, but as my exposure to them grew, so did my respect and admiration for what they were doing. The thing with Roxy Music is that they’ve had such a varied musical output it’s impossible to judge them from a single random track. If you listen to something from their first album and then this (their last full studio album), you might wonder “is this even the same band?” Not to say that they don’t have an easily recognizable ‘sound’, just that they evolved quite a bit over time. They really are a hugely influential band and have had a rich history. Even if you don’t like everything they’ve done, it’s at least useful to know what they’re about.
This album came out when alternative music was huge and branching into many subgenres. Roxy Music, along with bands such as Duran Duran and Spandau Ballet, led the New Romantic scene which was identified by fashion as much as by the music. Bryan Ferry was generally recognized as the icon of the movement.
I got introduced to this song in 2003 by the movie, "Lost in Translation" starring Bill Murray and Scarlett Johansson. Became a Roxy Music (and Bryan Ferry solo fan) after hearing it. I will be seeing a reunited Roxy Music (with Paul Thompson, but no Brian Eno) later this year on their 50th anniversary tour.
For a real roxy tune with just the most amazing guitar solo, lyrics that will make you laugh... in every dream home a heartache.. give yourself a real treat
Well done for giving Roxy Music another try. They are definitely worth further investigation. My personal favourite is ‘Slave to Love’. And of the older material ‘Street Life’
70s Roxy Music - experimental pop, 80s Roxy Music - polished mainstream pop. Both have their positives and negatives, but I think I preferred them when they were taking risks, even if they didn't always pay off.
Actually Brian Eno got his start in Roxy Music being on the first two albums. But particular album is fantastic. Especially the title track. Bryan's voice takes time to get used to.
The whole Avalon album has a great atmosphere and Bryan Ferry's voice melts all over it. One of the first vinyl records I ever owned. Love it. It may not be experimental and more poppy than their previous work, but it's my favorite album of theirs. Thanks for the reaction.
You heard it on "Lost In Translation" when Bill Murray sang it to Scarlett Johansson during a karaoke scene. Loved that scene and have always loved this song.
To hear the original sound of the band you need to listen to their first hit Virginia Plain, Roxy Music were the original Glam Rockers before Bowie, T Rex. I went to the same school as Bryan Ferry
This song has a tremendous sentimental significance to it for many people from that time and to do a reaction without that in mind it doesn't capture the emotional importance that it has for them.
Discovered Roxy Music years ago and they’ve quickly become one of my favorite bands of all time…you should also try listening to “mother of pearl” and “if there is something”
I knew if I scrolled down I would find a mention of Lost In Translation, one of my favorite movies. Btw, only Bill Murray sings "More Than This"; Scarlett does "Brass In Pocket."
I think the outstanding thing about this song is the lyrics. I always interpreted it as a plea to God to reveal himself. It's heartbreaking. It's not a happy song. "It was fun for a while. There was no way of knowing. Like a dream in the night, who can say where we're going. No care in the world, maybe I'm learning why the sea on the tide has no way of turning. More than this, you know there is nothing. More than this, tell me one thing. MOre than this - no, there is nothing." It feels to me like a description of the transition from carefree childhood to the deep, troubling questions of adulthood about life and death.
I hate that people call you uncultured for not liking something, how stupid and uncalled for. I'm loving your musical journey. And this is the Roxy I prefer too.
Wanted to add an additional comment after watching the video in it's entirety and seeing how yall were a bit dispirited. Don't give the haters airtime or any of your attention! It takes to two seconds to throw out a spiteful comment, but what you guys do takes time, dedication and a love of music! You are a breath of fresh air and have a very positive vibe. Of course life affects us all and we get down sometimes, but don't let that occur as the result of some ass troll. You are appreciated for what you are doing Nick n Lex!
The movie Flashbacks of a Fool makes brilliant use of the track “If there is Something”. Maybe give that a listen…. Also love is solo stuff - Slave to Love and Don’t Stop the dance are big hits.
Bryan Ferry's solo work is worth diving into. His Album Bete Noire is great. The song The Right Stuff is outstanding. I would encourage you to give that a listen
I like later, 70's early 80's Roxy Much more than the mid seventies. The whole Avalon recording is so smooth and sexy. Also Dance away and Oh yeah are excellent.
I love Bryan Ferry & Roxy Music & that is an incredible album! Up there in may top 10 favorite albums, actually. 💓Also, check out Bryan Ferry's *Slave To Love* ❤
This band had Brian Eno, (Synthesizer), Phil Manzanera, (Guitar) Andy McKay (Sax), Brian Ferry (vocals, keyboards), Paul Thompson), artists such as David Bowie, Chrissie Hynde, The Cars, Kate Bush, Simple Minds, Annie Lennox have mentioned Roxy Music as a great influence. Of his songs there is one that has always struck me "Same Old Scene". Saludos
Right on. Phil Manzanera btw played for a stretch with David Gilmour, when touring both David and “Floyd’s’” material. Check out the concert, “David Gilmour Live From Gdańsk.” Phil is a better pro than I thought. Regards
There's a track on Avalon called "The Space Between" that is arguably my favourite. One of those songs that sends shivers down my spine when I hear it playing on a slick sound system. Just a lovely album, I hope you guys played it good and loud!
@sam369 I'm with you, I love "The Space Between".....I played it a lot when my life was pregnant with our first son, and she said that while she was in labor she kept hearing the song in her head.
Hi NicknLex, this is their more commercial/poppy 80's sound. As i & others have said you should listen to their first 4 albums ( more experimental, art rock, glam rock period ) for a more rounded perspective. Glad that someone has mentioned Be Bop Deluxe as well, massively underrated 70's British band with the great Bill Nelson on lead guitar & vocals.
I saw BeBopDeluxe several times back in the day, usually at De Montfort hall, Leicester. The first band I played in covered "Ships in the Night" and "Fair Exchange". For a first taster for NicknLex though I suggest "Maid in Heaven". My favourite is "Beauty Secrets" which gets regular airtime even still.
Be Bop Deluxe and Roxy Music are 2 of my all-time favorites. For BBD try Axe Victim. The title cut is awesome, and so are Jet Silver and the Dolls of Venus, Adventures in a Yorkshire Landscape, Night Creatures, Jets at Dawn. For Roxy try Out of the Blue, She Sells, and Could it Happen to Me?
Roxy Music is a great band with a very diverse back catalog. Avalon was their last album and really ushered in the '80s New Wave sound. Although Roxy is not popular in the USA they were enormous in England and in Europe and were very influential. "Both Ends Buring" is a great song in my opinion, but it comes from a slightly earlier era it was more unapologetically masculine in its perspective. I think of it as a yearning but internal dialogue, whereas "More Than This" has a detached romanticism that is not held secretly. The singer, Bryan Ferry also has multiple solo albums full of excellent material. one wonderful song it does not get much attention is called "When She Walks in the Room" off of his album called The Bride Stripped Bare" I highly recommend you guys check it out, it's mostly violin and drums but full of tragic, yearning romance like so much of Bryan Ferry's work. There are also many traditional guitar based rock songs on that album. "Can't Let Go" is a good one. Also worth checking out our the Roxy Music songs "Street Life" "Grey Lagoons" & "Do The Strand". I guess you can tell I'm a fan, but there are many many great songs Roxy Music and Bryan Ferry
"Oh Yeah", and "In the Midnight Hour" are two of my favs off the 'Flesh and Blood' album! But they are all good. BUT for something VERY interesting and an unusual catchy beat, try "Rain, Rain, Rain" from the same album. It's a MUST!
Don't be afraid to express your true opinion - there will always be folks that will disagree! Go with what you like and don't be afraid to explore whatever you want! You two are an awesome couple and I appreciate your openness to new/old music! Thank you!
This whole album sounds so seductive due to the production and the tasteful use of delays - especially on "The Space Between Us". "The Main Thing" sounds something like a post Genesis Peter Gabriel song.
I can not believe that Nick didn't raise up his right hand next to Lex's face lol. Always reminds me of someone holding up a treat to a dog. 😃😃 btw I love this tune.
Such a great album. It was in the Zeitgeist of the early 80s. It's been said that more people had sex with this album playing than any other album in the 80s, and I certainly include myself in that number. It was the perfect CD to put on when bringing somebody back to your apartment.
I saw Roxy Music in Cardiff, Wales in the mid-seventies - coming down from Shrewsbury with 5 friends, we dropped some LSD on the train in anticipation of arriving in good time for the concert. At Abergavenny the train broke down and we sat in the carriage watching a beautiful sunset over the Welsh hills until British Rail sent a new engine. On arrival we ran to the concert hall and got there in time for the start, helplessly tripping. Eddie Jobson was playing a see-through violin if I remember correctly. Can't say I ever listened to their music again after that, I thought Brian Ferry was a snob...
Avalon is certainly the most accessible Roxy Music album and one of my favorites. You mentioned Brian Eno in your commentary - Eno was actually a part of the band for their first album. Big part of art rock/prog history there. Check out the rest of the album - it is quite good. Also, investigate Phil Manzanera, the guitartist. He is amazing. He also played with Eno in a live band called 801. Keep up the good work! and thank you
The entire Avalon album is wonderful……I will confess to not knowing their music outside of that album…..and I’ve been told it’s different from the rest of their catalogue, but this album was very special to my husband and me when we first were dating…….still together 37 years later….
Nick & Lex, Please don't let others dictate what you do. Also, most appreciate your true feelings and never be dishonest to appease the few selfishly rude listeners. We all have different likes and dislikes. It's very immature and unrealistic to think that your thoughts and impressions are any less important than mine or anyone else CHOOSING to follow your reactions. We wouldn't have so many genres of music if we all heard music the same way ... boring!! I, like most of your followers, appreciate your reactions and comments. Follow your hearts 💕 and enjoy every moment experiencing new music. Roxy Music ... I understand your first reaction because something didn't quite seem correct on some of their earlier albums. However, the band members are excellent in their own right. I've seen others suggest most of these, but Bryan Ferry's album, BOYS AND GIRLS is excellent. There isn't a bad song. Suggested songs ... SLAVE TO LOVE WINDSWEPT DON'T STOP THE DANCE ... Any song 🎵
Its a great album with about 6 songs from it all top 10 hits. Love Is The Drug next please. A 70-80’s band they were very much at the forefront of the genre. Well done for giving Roxy another try. Classy band
Iconic Track by Legendary Band. I Wouldn't Let a Naysayer and The Ensuing Effrontery Bother me for a Second. You Are Both Beautiful People. It's Always a Delight to Be a Guest and Fellow Traveller On a Lifelong Musical Journey. You're Cordial and Inviting Reactions are Always Sincere Spontaneous and Superb. Love You Both Dearly as if you Were Son and Daughter. Keep Doing What You're Doing Because it Makes All of Us Happy and is More Appreciated than You Both Every Realized !!! 🤠🎶😁🎵😊❤🎵🎼🎶🤠❤
That Roxy Music Avalon CD gifted to you is pure gold! Great album front to back, you're going to love it. Don't let a little criticism, fair or unfair, get you so down. Shake it off. Thanks for giving Roxy a second listen.
it is my birthday today..thanks for the gift of a roxy music reaction..they really are great..listen to their song "Virginia plain" keep em' comin' my rocky mountain friends..Kent
HAPPY BIRTHDAY KEN!!! 🥳 ❤️ We love you and send hugs!!
Happy Belated Birthday, Kent!
Happy Birthday Week! We celebrate you! 🎂🥂🎈🤩
Happy Birthday again! Roxy is a gift indeed
Simply one of the most beautiful songs ever the past 50 years
Et slave to love ❤❤❤❤❤
OMG I feel so young listening to this. I feel 12 years old wearing groves into this vinyl, listening to it over and over again. Such a beautiful beautiful song. Like falling in love - there is nothing More than This.
Avalon is a beautifully produced atmospheric album. Its a great album. Still have it on original vinyl
This album is way, way under-recognized. It's a beautiful work. Thank you for featuring this. "Avalon"!
The end of this song is the coolest most hip close to a song I can think of. Top 5 all time for me
Yay! You gave them a second chance! Mad respect for doing that. Not many reactors would bother doing that after an initial negative reaction.
I myself didn’t really ‘get’ them at first, but as my exposure to them grew, so did my respect and admiration for what they were doing.

They really are a hugely influential band and have had a rich history. Even if you don’t like everything they’ve done, it’s at least useful to know what they’re about.

Roxy Music, along with bands such as Duran Duran and Spandau Ballet, led the New Romantic scene which was identified by fashion as much as by the music. Bryan Ferry was generally recognized as the icon of the movement.
Still is!
Man the music from the early 80’s the soundtrack of my youth. What a killer time to be alive.
'Smooth' is the word you're looking for.
Thanks for sharing I remember seeing the music video on MTV in 1982 still one of my favorite 80s song. Bryan ferry is the lead singer
Avalon is one of my favorite albums of all time. It is fantastic music to make love to.
Absolutely!
Top comment. Just try it. ;)
I got introduced to this song in 2003 by the movie, "Lost in Translation" starring Bill Murray and Scarlett Johansson. Became a Roxy Music (and Bryan Ferry solo fan) after hearing it. 'Slave To Love' is actually Bryan Ferry solo.
@@TRANZEURO good point!
70s Roxy Music - experimental pop, 80s Roxy Music - polished mainstream pop. Both have their positives and negatives, but I think I preferred them when they were taking risks, even if they didn't always pay off.
3AM loft in Soho (NY) early 80's - this song takes me right back,,,
I loved the album Avalon so much I had the album cover painted on the back of my pickup
My roommate and I would play this album almost every night when it came out. Bryan Ferry was the James Bond of Rock.
I love that - "the James Bond of Rock"!!
1980 'Same Old Scene' my favourite Roxy Music song :)
That entire album is great. Have a full listen.
Mother of Pearl is astonishing.
the entire album . avalon. is great,
You need to check out Phil Manzanera (guitarist for Roxy Music) solo album called Diamondhead. Very Pink Floydish. Try "East of Echo".
Absolutely love this album my second favourite Roxy album after Flesh and blood.
You heard it on "Lost In Translation" when Bill Murray sang it to Scarlett Johansson during a karaoke scene. Loved that scene and have always loved this song.
This album is pure narcotic for my time in college. While totally sober, in broad daylight, the album starts and I relax.
'Same Old Scene', is my personal favourite
Great tune from my high school days. Instantly puts me in a romantic and nostalgic mood. 😄
What an album!
This was my "go to album" back in the early 80's during my heavy "dating days". Very romantic relaxing vibe to the whole album.
Lol, the number one make out album of the summer of ‘82. 😘
To hear the original sound of the band you need to listen to their first hit Virginia Plain, Roxy Music were the original Glam Rockers before Bowie, T Rex.
I went to the same school as Bryan Ferry
This song has a tremendous sentimental significance to it for many people from that time and to do a reaction without that in mind it doesn't capture the emotional importance that it has for them.
the whole album is magical
Discovered Roxy Music years ago and they’ve quickly become one of my favorite bands of all time…you should also try listening to “mother of pearl” and “if there is something”
I love all their work from the 80s. Well produced, well played and sung.
Bill Murray and Scarlett Johansen sang a karaoke version of this in the movie Lost in Translation.
I knew if I scrolled down I would find a mention of Lost In Translation, one of my favorite movies. Btw, only Bill Murray sings "More Than This"; Scarlett does "Brass In Pocket."
Thanks for the reaction. You should definitely also listen to “Oh Yeah”, a masterpiece! I’m sure you’ll enjoy it🤗
I think the outstanding thing about this song is the lyrics. I always interpreted it as a plea to God to reveal himself. It's heartbreaking. It's not a happy song. "It was fun for a while. It feels to me like a description of the transition from carefree childhood to the deep, troubling questions of adulthood about life and death.
Thanks Nick n Lex. Check out Take a Chance With Me, also on Avalon.
I hate that people call you uncultured for not liking something, how stupid and uncalled for. I'm loving your musical journey. And this is the Roxy I prefer too.

Wow 40 years ago this was released, I remember it clearly, what a classic song and album, great memories as a young man👌👍🎶🎸😊
Bryan Ferry's solo work is worth diving into. His Album Bete Noire is great. The song The Right Stuff is outstanding. I would encourage you to give that a listen
Originally a b-side from The Smiths, called ‘money changes everything’, which was then adapted by Bryan along with Johnny Marr.
This whole album Avalon is a vibe. Very stylish, very atmospheric. I love it.
I like later, 70's early 80's Roxy Much more than the mid seventies. The whole Avalon recording is so smooth and sexy. Also Dance away and Oh yeah are excellent.
ROXY MUSIC LIVE - " Love is the drug" is great.
I love Bryan Ferry & Roxy Music & that is an incredible album! Up there in may top 10 favorite albums, actually. 💓Also, check out Bryan Ferry's *Slave To Love* ❤
Great songs and great music
I love Bill Murray singing this karaoke in the movie Lost In Translation.

In 1990 he released an album "Mato Grosso" together with the Brazilian musician Sergio Dias of jazz fusion that is a wonder. Saludos
For me its "True To Life".
But like you said, the entire album is lovely.
"Avalon" is another wonderful Roxy Music tune.
Hi NicknLex, this is their more commercial/poppy 80's sound. So many nice memories to this song, and the whole album. Played often in those special moments, with special people.
Roxy Music is a great band with a very diverse back catalog. Avalon was their last album and really ushered in the '80s New Wave sound. Although Roxy is not popular in the USA they were enormous in England and in Europe and were very influential.

So glad you are giving Roxy Music another chance. Won't be disappointed just like you did with Steely Dan.
Don't be afraid to express your true opinion - there will always be folks that will disagree! Go with what you like and don't be afraid to explore whatever you want! You two are an awesome couple and I appreciate your openness to new/old music! Thank you!
I swear this song (and the whole album Avalon, honestly) is responsible for its own baby boom in the 1980s.
One of my very favourite songs! This is post-Eno Roxy. Try 'Do the Strand', 'Virginia Plain', 'In Every Dream Home A Heartache' and 'Prairie Rose'
Brian Eno was the electronic composter and keyboardist in Roxy Music's original line up, (in case you didn't know.)
Play the whole album! Absolutely perfect. This was used in a recent commercial. Maybe for a bank
Avalon is pretty pretty much sonically the best track they ever did...you guys will get to it at some point...trust me..pure honey
I think my favorite is still "Out of the Blue" from the album "Country Life."
"Avalon" is an exceptional "album" - just one amazing song after another. So atmospheric, sophisticated but very emotional at the same time.
One of the best 80's songs. The sound of Roxy Music it's so unique! LOVE THIS SONG AND THIS BAND. GREAT REACTION, GUYS! Grettings from Spain!
This song EXUDES summertime - love it so much.
I'm so glad you decided to give these guys another try. keep going with this album, you won't be disappointed. Great musicality.
Such a great album. It was in the Zeitgeist of the early 80s. It's been said that more people had sex with this album playing than any other album in the 80s, and I certainly include myself in that number. It was the perfect CD to put on when bringing somebody back to your apartment.
One of the greatest make-out albums ever created. It made me sad that guy's comment was so jerky. Way to rise above!
Great story though. Nice little trip day memory. Thanks ✨😉
Keep up the good work! and thank you
Dreamy stuff! Early MTV vids and songs of my youth.
I know Bill Murray sang this on karaoke in "Lost in Translation."
The entire Avalon album is wonderful……I will confess to not knowing their music outside of that album…..and I’ve been told it’s different from the rest of their catalogue, but this album was very special to my husband and me when we first were dating…….still together 37 years later….
for some reason, i was reminded of "The Cars".... searched your channel, but no Cars! #nicknlexrequest
Guys, Roxy Music were trend setters and innovators, so much 80s and 90s music was inspired by them
Start at the beginning, re/make re/model.
The whole album is great. Good to relax to.
Nick & Lex, Please don't let others dictate what you do. Also, most appreciate your true feelings and never be dishonest to appease the few selfishly rude listeners.
SLAVE TO LOVE
WINDSWEPT
DON'T STOP THE DANCE
... Any song 🎵
Great song, amazing album
Avalon is the best Roxy
You really need to do the title track to this album. Stunning
You don't have to like any particular music - there's no reason to apologize for the reactions that are less than positive. It's just your impression.
She gets it he doesn't. Imagine pickin up girls in the 70s in discos to this Art Glam rock - easy 😂 Art rock with a capital A.
This song was poetry and allegory and just beautiful. The entire album is gorgeous. *digs out the CD*
Its a great album with about 6 songs from it all top 10 hits. Love Is The Drug next please. A 70-80’s band they were very much at the forefront of the genre.
Well done for giving Roxy another try. Classy band
My favourite album is "Stranded" from 1973. And the live album "Viva!" from 1976.
Loved the way Natalie Merchant and 10,000 Maniacs did the song although I went through a big phase of Brian Ferry and Roxy Music back in the day too.
You still look like you need coffee.🤣 Must have been a great party! 👍
One of my few ‘stranded on an island’ albums. The whole album is filled with sexy slick urban romantic minimalistic music. My fave: True To Life.
Great song! Great band!
Iconic Track by
Legendary Band.

That Roxy Music Avalon CD gifted to you is pure gold! Great album front to back, you're going to love it. Don't let a little criticism, fair or unfair, get you so down. Shake it off. Thanks for giving Roxy a second listen.
Avalon is fantastic. Good music for young couples in love…with the lights turned down…fire going…a little wine…
Excuse me for a minute……
