In The Mood for Alentejo: Part 3 | Exploring Estremoz, Elvas, Mouchão & Marvão | Travel in Portugal

- Alentejo in Portugal is a spectacularly vast region that urges anyone with a love for bucolic sceneries and dramatic landscapes to come back over and over again. This time, we headed to Alto Alentejo, this Portuguese hinterland that shares a border with Spain, exploring the deeply historic Estremoz, the garrison town of Elvas, a UNESCO World Heritage Site with its mighty twin fortresses, and climbed the Serra de São Mamede (on the mountainous district of Portalegre) for the grand finale that is the ancient hilltop town of Marvão.
In between, we encountered two wonderful surprises -- a stay in Monte da Provença, this idyllic and rural farmhouse hotel just outside Elvas, and finally, a visit in Herdade do Mouchão, one of the oldest vineyards in Alentejo, with their heritage Alicante Bouschet wines that have surpassed renown.

As you can see, I truly enjoy Alentejo. There's just so much beauty in the region still left unexplored that I keep coming back here to create more videos.

What a beautiful Tiny Country, I'm just realizing how beautiful it is. For myself , I was born in Lisbon and that was most of Portugal that I was used to, I now live in Canada and through the internet I am learning more and more about the Country where I was born.

Imagine a perfect Saturday evening: a comfortable couch, a bottle of good wine shared with my wonderful wife, accompanied by our sleeping dog, while searching for videos about Portugal where we can find what defines us: love for tranquility, nature, mountain running, good food, and a united community. That's how TH-cam suggested your video. We savored every second of the 3 clips, and I thank you for sharing all these things with us. After visiting Madeira last year and planning to return this year and to the Algarve area three times by 2025, Alentejo will definitely be our destination

Dear Janz, this video reflects my own childhood in a take... my mother and grandparents are from Elvas, and my late grandfather was determined to show us and explore this magical land of Alto Alentejo. Every year, on his birthday, we would explore news towns, villages and spots. So this was a truly emotional journey for me. Thank you for that. Let me have the audacity to point out 2 things you didn't cover on this video:
- Palácio de Vila Viçosa, an astonishing palace, both in architecture and in its luxourious interiors
- alentejo cuisine, which you covered a bit, but that it is rooted in the scarce available elements, the poors cuisine: bread, olive oil, water, herbs caught in the wild, pork, lamb, chicken. The people were mainly poor, working for the big landlords. They didn't own land, the vast planes of Alentejo were owned by a few very rich families. So enters creativity, and the alentejo cuisine is its most poignant expression.
Again, thank you so much for this video, and continue to explore our wonderful country.
