The magic of drugs ❤️
@@davidsamonski What changed was the access to and type of drugs they took with each passing year, from tobacco and alcohol, through Benzedrine, Speed, Preludin, Cannabis, LSD, Cocaine and heroin. It wasn't the source of their genius but it sometimes helped with the pressures.
@@davidsamonski Lyrics adapted from the Tibetan Book of the Dead, though, of course - no drugs involved there, AFAIK. It was Tim Leary who took those teachings and turned them into a guidebook for psychedelic drug use - 'The Psychedelic Experience' - which in turn inspired John to write TNK. I can't recall now whether the Beatles had discovered meditation at this point or not. But that was the original meaning of the lyrics - a meditative method of preparing yourself mentally for death, which of course, in Eastern philosophy, is just another illusion..."It is not dying..."
And that’s why they were amazing
Huge difference between early 60s and late 60s! :)
The guys you said were the rip off Beatles actually had many of their songs written by the Beatles. Paul was dating the singers’ sister at the time so they got a lot of the scraps.
I missed that. Who is this, please? Who did he say were the rip-off Beatles? never mind, got it from an answer below thanks. "Peter and Gordon..."
@@joescott8877Mike Myers got the look of Austin Powers from Peter Asher. That's a little Easter egg for you
@@joescott8877 peter asher was jane asher's brother. he went on to become a producer later on.
@@fabiomanic6977 cool, thx. i hear his Beatles show on sirius xm sometimes, had no idea, lol..
@@9999bigb whoa! yeah, baby, lol.
The Beatles song “I’m only sleeping” just won a Grammy this year. Also, 4 separate biopic movies of The Beatles with actors playing them will be made 54 years after their breakup that will be shown in theaters in 2027. These things just shows how important they still are.
I thought it was the artwork in the new video for IOS that won the Grammy, rather then the song itself, but maybe they don't make that distinction between song and artwork for these awards. In any case, the artwork was brilliant - a real labour of love - and the young woman who created/ painted it all, was so thrilled, being a huge Beatles fan. There's a lovely video on YT about how she made it, too.
The award was for best music video.
12:12 "I don't care what they say..." This was written by Paul McCartney, btw. Peter and Gordon. Paul dated Peter's sister and lived in the Asher house. Peter Asher is now on Sat Radio hosting the Beatle channel.
The song title was A world without Love.
9:48 Some context on the Beach Boys- They initially started copying that specific surf style but grew into more complex music as they developed. They were mostly a group of brothers and had a Jackson 5 style abusive father who pushed them into stardom. Like with the Jackson 5, it turns out one of the kids (Brian Wilson) was a musical genius and a gifted singer. So the early Beach Boys albums are simple surf rock songs with great harmonies, but by 1966 when Pet Sounds came out, Brian Wilson came into his own as a songwriter and wrote some truly incredible stuff. It was the album that inspired the Beatles to make Sgt Peppers and it still stands out today as one of the best albums ever
The Beach Boys started the surfing style, but Jan and Dean had the first number one, even though it was written by the Beach Boys' Brian Wilson: the Surf City song heard here.
W@namesameasu Wasn't Dick Dale the first in 1961?
@@mustangdebbie56 Dale played a hand in the establishing the guitar sound and perhaps even coming up with the idea of "surf music," but Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys defined the sound as a whole that is so clearly heard in that Jan and Dean number.
The reason you haven’t heard I Feel Fine, We Can Work It Out, and Paperback Writer before is because they’re non-album singles. You’ll hear them again on Past Masters
2 things: The Beatles were already popping in England for 2 years before we got them in America, thats why they had Love Me Do (recorded 62) and Cant Buy Me Love (64) as back to back singles.
I Wanna Hold Your Hand is on the Blue and Red collection. You HAVE TO include those in your Beatles marathon
Blue/Red is unnecessary for reactions as all the non album singles are compiled on Past Masters (which he said he would get round to) without any album song overlaps. It's great to own as a beginner Beatles collection though
@@rockstarrzz7171 Yup! I kinda worshipped it on our family's turntable in the living room when I was in 6th or 7th grade, sititng on the carpeted floor and playing it over and over, lol! (Gravitating gradually toward Blue, heh)
Yep, my Dad had Red and Blue on CD and we wore that out so much the label was faded and coming off. Probably the two best collection-albums of all time@@joescott8877
6:55 The Stripper - David Rose (1962) didn't sound like that, the channel that compiled the video apparently included someone's drum cover by mistake :D
not a mistake, there’s a bunch of covers in there and things misspelt…
The Beatles and The Rolling Stones actually got along great. In fact the Beatles helped the rolling stones get started by writing a song or two for them.
The contrast was more in the publics eye, but they were actually friends.
They were friends but worlds apart in talent, it's not that the Rolling Stones weren't talented, in fact, they are legends, it's just that The Beatles are that good!
Darius will like the Rolling Stones (I think). I remember listening to "Big Hits (High Tide and Green Grass)" on vinyl at my friend Tommy's house in high school (it was his older brother's). That was a compilation album in 1966.. and they still had decades of albums to come.
This channel needs more attention
So glad you enjoyed the video! You noted a big change in 1964. The Beatles were the big change of course, but it was also the time of the "British Invasion" which really changed pop/rock music,
9:56 "re: Pet Sounds - Beachboys" The Beatles were very impressed by Pet Sounds. They got competitive with the Beach Boys and created "Back in the USSR" as a sort of beach boy parody. On Pet Sounds, Brian Wilson got full control and used all these studio musicians. It was a huge and crazy project with Brian Wilson really shining in his experimentation. It drove the Beatles to up their game.
I think Mike Love actually suggested the "ukraine girls really knock me out" section when Paul was writing the song in India
I think Paul said you couldn't consider yourself Musically Educated if you didn't know Pet Sounds. Or he might have been talking only about the song "God Only Knows." Still, quite the praise!
According to Wikipedia (cos I happened to look it up the other day) BITUSSR was a combination of Chuck Berry's patriotic 'Back in the US' for the idea of returning home to one's beloved homeland, and the Beach Boys' California Girls, which compared the wonderful girls from different regions of the US. The Cold War was HOT back then so Paul's version was very tongue in cheek, really just making fun of the whole thing.
Fun Fact! He's so fine at 8:31 had a pretty similar melody to George Harrison's hit single, My Sweet Lord, and it turned into a big lawsuit
“A world without love” by Peter and Gordon was written by Lennon/McCartney. They didn’t think it sounded Beatley enough for themselves. Paul shared the third floor of the Asher home with Peter Asher and was going out with his sister, model Jane Asher.
It was written entirely by Paul. John didn’t like it while Paul did. He gave it to Peter Asher and it was a worldwide #1 hit. John often had terrible judgement
I expect you know, really, but of course Jane Asher wasn't a model, she was a serious actress (and still is AFAIK). It was her commitment to her acting career that caused some of the tensions in their relationship when she would be away for long periods of time doing theatre seasons in other cities, while Paul wanted her to be around for him the whole time - Here, There and Everywhere explains his feelings (he wanted, but couldn't have her here, there and everywhere at his side)..
Jane Asher was an actress not model.
Fun fact: Roy Orbison/Pretty Woman later joined George Harrison, Bob Dylan, Tom Petty and Jeff Lynne in the Traveling Wilburys (years after The Beatles). Also, the sounds of Motown was just amazing! You may later want to check out The Byrds - some good songs.
At one time in 1964 the Beatles had the 5 songs of the top ten at the same time
Yes The Beatles had the TOP 5 songs on the Billboard Hot 100 the first week in April, 1964 (I think it was April 4) but they also had 7 other songs on the Billboard Hot 100 that same week!
@@patticrichton1135 And they added 2 more songs to the top 100 the following week, meaning 14 songs in the top 100. NOBODY has done that, before or since then.
Repeat after me: the Beatles changed EVERYTHING overnight!!!!! Music, hair, fashion, EVERYTHING.
Even movies🎉
"Is everybody tryin' to look like the Beatles in 1965?". YAAAAAS!!!
1962, "The Stripper" was obviously a newer video. The song is a classic. It's music that was constantly used for someone attempting a seductive dance. 😂😂😂
The Beatles followed the beach boys and the Byrds very closely, and the Beach Boys and the Byrds followed the Beatles very closely. Mutual respect.
when the beatles came on the scene literally all style(haircuts, dress, etc) changed. They changed music immediately also.
"Love Me Do" was not only one of the Beatles first hits in 1964, but it was released as the B-side of their final hit -- the one that was just released a few months ago, "Now and Then"
The Beach Boys only made beach music for 3 years off their very long career. Starting from their album Today! Released in 1965, They left the surf/car/beach music and started to write very artistic and personal music
“Talk to me 60s” love it 🤣
Jan and Dean were Beach Boys contemporaries, but a tragic accident injured one of them and their career kinda vanished after that. But I saw them in like 1980 or 81 doing a USO tour. Sadly, it was apparent which one was in the accident. 😢
The Beach Boys' last song about surfing was in 1964, two years before Pet Sounds, not to mention Smile. Their songs were way more complex and varied than they get credit for. Also, Surf City by Jan and Dean was co-written by Brian Wilson, the main songwriter of the Beach Boys.
"Surf City" was written by Brian Wilson of The Beach Boys, and Jan and Dean were friends with the members of the group, and toured with them. They developed a similar style of background harmonies and sunny tunes. Jan Berry was a superb producer, too, although Brian was pretty much the best producer and arranger in the land. Lots of fun J & D tunes -- they easily belong in the Rock Hall of Fame. "Drag City" is a great one by them.
most of the singles (considered by many there best songs) like paperback rider, day tripper, we can work it out etc. weren’t even on there albums! i truly do recommend listening to the singles from the albums at the same time in the same reaction so you can get a better feel for where there were at the time rather than retroactively listening to past masters. huge fan can’t wait for rest of videos!!!
In the U.S. the songs were on the albums, but since 1985 those albums were replaced by the British track listings that the Beatles preferred anyway. Originally, it wasn't until Sgt. Pepper that the U.S. and the U.K. had the same song listings. The British record industry thought it was bad policy to include hit singles on albums.
The Beatles and Rolling Stones had friendly lifetime rivalry. The Beatles wrote them their first hit song. “I wanna be your man”.
Dude, you got ten years of listening, that's how long it took the rest of us to soak it in.
Dion is STILL making records and singing better than ever. Yes, that’s Jimmy Dean who started the sausage empire. Had TV show that introduced the Muppets.
That’s it man, if you know what to look for you can see how the Beatles lit a fire…I also want to say it wasn’t just their look and sound, but as you point out, the creativity. They gave music a big push towards having meaning and artistic depth that was world changing, and that’s for all the musicians and audiences that followed. Top 40 is an industry concept that turns music into a product to be churned out and sold…to a world being instructed what their tastes should be. The Beatles brought pure creativity into the conversation. It has been pointed out that by the mid 60s record executives had no idea why things were selling and what people wanted. Every weirdo with a guitar and gold earring was getting signed as they threw spaghetti against the wall to see what would stick. But cream rises to the top and in the end it was an incredible era of music and a time of real work to raise the consciousness of the people. Power to the people! And yeah, I heard all those Beatles songs first time played on the radio. They don’t get old. I also want to send some love to those incredible black artists…who kept their soul and musical integrity while bringing it to the world. Few of the white artist could say that. For that reason I don’t really compare them to the Beatles. They were there first, and all the best white artists knew it…and loved them for it. Music is colorblind. (Seriously I was a 10 yo white kid in SF, walking down the street singing with James Brown on my transistor radio, “say it loud, I’m black and I’m proud!”. I even understood what it meant…music is…..something.
OMG this just took me thru my teen years. I'm 76 and loved it
12:17 I’m losing it at your reaction to those guys, they got u completely baffled 😭
I noticed "Go Away Little Girl". It said Steve Lawrence (he did record that song) but the person it showed singing it was Donny Osmond. (He recorded it also).
yah there’s a bunch like that
One last thing… In 1964, when the Beatles broke through with their number one hits, they were televised on the Ed Sullivan show, which reached millions of households in America. Back then, songwriters and musicians were separate entities. You would have really good songwriters pitch their songs to the producers of music, and then they would go on to pick appropriate musicians to play the song. And then, they would bring in singers, which were a separate thing also, to put the icing on the cake and sell the single.. the Beatles changed the rules. They came in as Singer songwriters, but they played their own instruments and sang the songs. They were the whole package in one. Those young teenagers sitting at home watching the Ed Sullivan show, saw the Beatles on TV, and were inspired to do exactly the same thing. There were a lot of copies out there, because everybody wanted to break into the scene at that point. A few of them did, riding on the coat tails of The Beatles.
These days, it’s pretty much common place to see a band play their own songs and sing them, but before 1964 and the Beatles breakthrough, it just wasn’t done at all. They changed the rules.
Chuck Berry and Little Richard wrote their own songs back in the 1950’s
Beatles breakthrough was indeed 1964 in the US, but in the UK started being noticed in 62 and number ones mid 63.
A white boomer here. I was a teen when many of these groups were popular. I loved the elegance of them all. The men in suits looking so fine, the girls in dresses and gowns looking so beautiful and classy. And their voices and music was 1st class all the way. I wouldn't trade my growing up years for anything.❤
Never forget, the first hit for the Stones was I Wanna Be Your Man.
YEP, which was written by the Beatles and they gave it to the Stones, but the Stones did it in a different way then when Ringo sang it.
Good job - that was fun! Subbed, looking forward to more from your channel. Thanks!
Year 2525 is an eerie MUST WATCH vid.
I grew up during the 60’s and Soul/R&B/Motown were probably my biggest influences (radio and older brothers’ record collection) along with the Beatles etc. Love your reactions!
Early Beach Boys were very much "surf", "girls", and "cars" driven but when the leader of the band Brian Wilson decided to write about more introspective things like heartbreak, identity, and fear of change? That's when they made Pet Sounds! Highly recommend reading into the album before going into it, as well as the scrapped follow up album "Smile"!
12:15 That song is actually written by Paul, he gave it to Peter & Gordon because Peter's sister Jane Asher was Paul's Girlfriend. And yeah the haircuts are just riding the Beatles train lol
You will inevitably find your way to Bob Dylan, the most influential artist of the century. He was the Beatles’ idol; he inspired them to write more serious music and he broke the mold of radio success formula. Songs were typically 2-3 minutes, and mostly pop and love songs. Dylan wrote long songs with serious subjects and mature, clever lyrics
a hurricane reaction video is bound to happen at some point
I'm assuming this is coming from a huge Dylan fan. A dozen other artists could make that claim.
The first LP (album) I ever bought, was in 1962. I know that from this video because it had many of the 1962 hits on it but I didn't realise until I got it home that they were cover versions, though as I hadn't heard the originals it didn't much matter at the time. I'd bought it from Woolworths. It was the Embassy label. My older siblings had just got our first record player. They were into Elvis but by my time I was into The Beatles.
Bro Pet Sounds is a BANGER. I didn't even know this till recently but The Beach Boys had an arc super similar to The Beatles, starting out with a super famous cornball hokey-poke sound then transitioning into changing music forever.
2 uploads in one day?! Wow! What a treat!
I like you and you're funny, my friend. I have Subscribed. Most of those earlier "look-alike" Groups were part of " The British Invasion" that took The USA by storm in the 1960s.
The Beatles recorded 230 Songs, nearly, all different. Other Groups featured in The British Invasion were The Animals, Hermans Hermits, The Dave Clark 5, and The Rolling Stones.
USA Most Number 1 records from this decade : 1/ The Beatles 2 The Supremes 3 Elvis Presley 4/The Rolling Stones.
I Want to Hold Your Hand (and the flip side, I Saw Her Standing There) was The Beatles breakout hit (a double sided hit at that). At the same time that huge hit came out, the Beatles at one point had five or six of their songs in the Top Ten ALL AT ONCE. There's never been that kind of domination of the charts before or since.
PLUS the same week the Beatles had the TOP 5 songs (first week in April 1964) they also had 7 OTHER songs on the list. 12 altogether the same week.
The Supremes were everywhere when I was growing up and we listened to them right along with The Beatles. They were very much part of the 60s sound. They do not get enough love these days.
I was born in 1964. So I was really not identifying with that type of music from before the Beatles. It sounded the same as the 50s genre of music. The difference in music before the Beatles and after is like night and day.
Thank God for the creation of the Beatles and their music. A whole new world.
You are correct. After Buddy Holly died, the music did too.
On the first of January 1960 everyone was still thinking fifties.
Always takes a few years before the character of a new decade emerges for everything.
I had the exact same reaction to David Rose' 'The Stripper' while watching this. Just like "What? My mans went in"
Love this series, Darius. I'm doing the same thing currently. Listening through The Beatles and loving it more than I thought I would.
The most important part of this is just how incredibly different the end of the 60s are from the beginning. No time period in human history has ever seen that much cultural change, where that many people tried completely new things. At the end of the 50s, the hippest thing was Rock n' Roll, which had existed for the whole decade, plus the same soft Pop songs. That remained the case until the Beatles came around, and at the end of the 60s, you had true Pop-Rock, Hard Rock, Metal, Proto-Punk, Psychedelic Rock, Folk Pop and Folk Rock, and even Prog Rock.
And no one has ever been the first to do as many things as The Beatles were. It's kind of uncountable just how many things they were the first to do, I'll learn about something new all the time. But a pretty important one is that ever since radio, the first Pop songs were always 2-3 minutes long because they wanted to cram as many songs as possible on the radio, which is why so many of the early Beatles songs are so short. Then in '64, The Animals' version of House of the Rising Sun was over 4 minutes, and I think they had to cut it short. But in '68, the Beatles absolutely smashed that with Hey Jude coming in at over 7 minutes, and they basically said "the radio will play it because it's The Beatles," which turned out to be true. And from that point on, there were much longer songs on the radio, especially in the 70s with Prog Rock and everything. Even by the 90s, songs were still commonly around 5 minutes long. We've kind of regressed back to 2-3 minute songs nowadays, though, because of streaming.
You got to listen to Beach Boys Pet Sounds after the Beatles Rubber Soul. Cause Beach Boys' Brian Wilson was inspired by Rubber Soul to do Pet Sounds, which inspired Paul to do Sgt. Pepper
And talking of inspiration, the Beatles took a lot from black girls groups for their sound
Great reaction bro😂
There are a lot of singles that where No 1 on the billboard charts that were missing on the 1960s no 1 video! You need to check out their chart history in the US including the B-sides that were never on the Albums!
If you do listen to The Rolling Stones, start with Gimme Shelter & Sympathy For The Devil. Absolute classics from the late 60’s.
One of the reasons why Beatles didn’t have that many hits at the end was because John Lennon made a comment about the Beatles being more popular the Jesus, and that didn’t go down that well with the Americans at the time
No, the fallout from that comment, that was taken out of context for that matter only lasted for a few months and didn’t really effect their output or popularity. I lived through those amazing times, they were so huge when that comment was made that it blew over pretty quickly. There were a few DJ’s that dissed them and a few record burnings but it didn’t effect them very much. It was just a small blip in their career.
@@scottborenstein8291 Absolutely correct!! John made that comment in 1966, so it wasn't really in the late '60s. PLUS that ridiculous reaction to it was ONLY in the "BIBLE BELT" in the Southern States. Besides, John was right.....he was amazed at the attention and frenzied popularity that they had'...and that teenagers weren't flocking to churches like we were to stand in line to get tickets to their concerts or see their movies in the theaters, we were getting our hands on every teen magazine that had the Beatles in them, and all the magazines that were entirely on the Beatles. I am sorry, but Jesus did not have THAT kind of fandom. There was absolutely NO reaction to that comment in the UK or in EUROPE, or in the rest of the U.S. Just in the Bible Belt of the South. It didn't hurt them at all.
No, they were more focused on albums
The band that was prevalent, expecially in '62 and '63 was the Four Seasons. Fun fact: No recording artist charted more singles on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in the 1960s than the Four Seasons (also known as Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons). See the movie "Jersey Boys" for their story.
I love your videos so much!
The Beatles were popular in England a full year before they were heard of in the US. So they had a stockpile of songs out of the starting gate of the Sullivan show.
I don't know who put this video together, but they don't know what they're doing. Go Away Little Girl by Steve Lawrence had a video of Donny Osmond. And Leaving on a Jet Plane by Peter, Paul and Mary was actually Mama Cass and John Denver in the video.
I am SO GLAD YOU pointed that out @lokivt, because I was going to mention it myself. I also noticed that they showed no film or even still photos of the Stones for their songs. Probably couldn't get permission. I guess that is why the clips were extremely short.....you couldn't get a sense of the song if you were not familiar with them. It was ok for me, because I lived through that period. I was 13 in 1960 and 22 in 1969, so I knew all those songs.
@patticrichton1135 the Stones videos were the official videos authorized by The Rolling Stones.
and some didn’t even get one line in, and “my boyfriend’s back” is from American Dreams, and others are covers too…
Peter Asher of Peter and Gordon (World Without Love) became the first head of A&R for Apple Records, then went on to become one of the top managers and producers in the industry. Paul McCartney wrote World Without Love. John didn’t like it so Paul gave it to Peter and it became No. 1. John and Paul wrote I Want to Hold Your Hand in Peter’s mother’s music room in the basement of their house. Peter’s mother taught music and tutored George Martin. It was a circle of talent. According to Peter he was also the inspiration for the look of Austin Powers.
The Beatles were everywhere!!
I would love to see your reaction to the #1s of the 70's. My favorite decade of music. Such amazing growth and change from 1970 - 1979. Probably more than any other decade in my lifetime. The rise of the singer/songwriters, disco, the beginning of punk and new wave, rock gets heavier. And the musicianship! Talent off the charts. Give it a try.
These snippets are way too short and don't do many of these songs justice. I highly recommend giving many of them a chance and listen to the full song. These songs were #1 for a reason.
Peter from Peter and Gordon’s sister dated Paul McCartney who stayed in their parents home. John and Paul wrote I wasn’t to Hold Your Hand on the family piano. He often previewed new songs to them after finishing them.
The problem with that video collection is it doesn't play enough of each song to get the feel of the tune. They could have added just a _few_ seconds more to each clip.
I agree with that, but I believe they were so short, because that is about the amount you can play WITHOUT having to get permission from the record company, etc, and also you don't have to PAY THEM to play something that short. It's sad, because you are so right, for something like, a person who doesn't know these songs CAN'T get a feel for it with just a few seconds.
The video they used for "Go Away Little Girl" by Steve Lawerence was NOT Steve Lawrence. It was Donny Osmond, who had a hit with it about 7 years later in 1970.
And also when they played "LEAVING ON A JET PLANE" they put PETER, PAUL and MARY under it ( and they HAD the first HIT with it) but showed CASS ELLIOTT (from the MAMAS and the PAPAS) and JOHN DENVER singing it!
Good to see the quality (or lack) of rock/pop music when The Beatles came on the scene. Early 60s pop rock was kinda sad. Actually, 50s rock had a better/harder edge with early Elvis, Chuck Berry, Little Richard and Jerry Lee Lewis to name a few. Doing this video puts the early Beatles in a better context and helps younger folks realize what they brought to pop music in the mid 60s.
This was so much fun. You’ll definitely need to do a reaction vid to the Beatles album 1 which has all their famous singles that aren’t in any of their original album releases.
For other must listen 60s albums, you DEFINITELY need to do reactions for Pet Sounds by The Beach Boys (much better than their early stuff) and Bridge Over Troubled Water by Simon and Garfunkel
The Beatles influenced everyone.
22:24 that is NOT Windy by The Association!! That's Never My Love (by The Association)
Also, lots of these Beatle ripoffs are actually pretty good. The Byrds for example, really good jangle pop stuff. The Beatles wrote a song inspired by their sound.
That bugged me. Windy is the first song I remember hearing on the radio.
The reason why the Beatles had less hits was because the list only includes songs they released as singles, and a lot of there songs after 1965 started only being released on an album rater than as a single as well. This ended up starting something called the album era.
I’m Canadian … do you think John’s Jesus remark affected their number ones also? It didn’t have much effect here, but I remember their records were being burned and smashed in the US. Also, some radio stations banned them
Im 35, and I was so at odds with "Pet sounds" when I first heard it.. It grew on me and is now a must-have in my mix.
An artist that you should familiarize yourself with are the Righteous Brothers. Fun fact: They were the opening act on the Beatles first American tour. But then because ABC-Television offered them an opportunity to be one of the "house acts" on a brand new primetime series called SHINDIG! that originated in Hollywood (they were from Southern California, so it was a natural fit), the quit the tour and appeared on Shindig! regularly and became a household name. Listen to their song "You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin'."
I was thirteen when The Beatles hit the stage. The greatest thing since PB&J! We started growing our hair long, had to have the peg tight pants and Beattle boots.
In reviewing the songs that preceeded the Beatles you can understand what a radical departure they were and why they were so immensely popular.
Jan & Dean were kinda' Beach Boy posse members (maybe they wrote it?) But Pet Sounds, which has SOME of that beach sound, has good stuff too.
Really glad you did this. The song that sounded like it had heavy metal
Drumming was a modern video/cover of the original song, so it was very out of place in this video, but you can definitely see the influence of the Beatles throughout the sixties: longer hair, matching suits to then psychedelic fashion, etc. They continuously moved the marker.
A less obvious influence here and who directly influenced the Beatles to move from writing music to their female fans to more personal lyrics is Bob Dylan, another artist worth examining.
I think it's funny that people keep making a point that groups started wearing matching suits because the Beatles did. That is not true, ALL the groups wore matching suits or outfits before the Beatles came to the U.S. That was the normal thing then. Now most groups look like they just show up on stage with whatever they happen to be wearing that day. Matching suits, dresses or clothing of any kind hasn't been a "thing" for a long long time. I miss that.
The Beatles released fewer singles and were more of an album group starting in 1967. And yet they still had the biggest impact on the music industry through 1970.
As someone who lived through every year of the decade let me say that was a great trip down memory lane. Lots of great songs in there that rivaled the Beatles that you can't really pick up on in just a three second clip. Check out "Love is Blue" when you get the chance, as an example.
prolific output !!!
The Beach Boys started as a dorky surf group sound, but they evolved to some great music, and their late 60s and early 70s stuff is super under rated
Thank you for doing this. Like I knew… 😅 but I didn’t KNOW!
Brian Wilson of The Beach Boys gave Jan and Dean the song you said sounded like the bbs. They were friends Jand D being down the road in Huntington Beach
Dude you gotta get into The Rolling Stones. My personal favorite is sticky fingers but that four album run of beggars banquet, let it bleed, sticky fingers and exile on Main Street is second to none. Some of the greatest and most iconic music ever made.
I was born in late 1959. From the time I was a baby until I was 10 years old, this was my soundtrack, and I am a musician today because of it. What an amazing time. I can answer a fuckton of questions for you if you’re so inclined. The Beatles, the Supremes, and the Rolling Stones dominated the decade, not to mention all the one-hit wonders. Motown was also born during this period, giving us an amazing catalog of great songs. From 1964 until about 1988, music was incredible… now, it’s mostly corporate. With a few exceptions.
The Supremes were one of the greatest and most popular groups of that era. And why not? The songs were great; they had great lyrics, and frequently very deep lyrics. And Diana Ross had something very, very special. Her voice is distinctive, and her delivery is perfect.
Darius: sees another 60s band
Also Darius: OFF BRAND BEATLES!!!
Surprisingly. "World without love" sung by Peter and Gordan, was a Paul Mccartney song. And I believe Paul was dating the sister of one of them.
There is a yt video on songs the Beatles gave away.
10:42 My Mom used to sing this song back when we were kids, and we thought it wasn't a real song for the longest time😅
They called those granny glasses...those blue tiny square things. A Hippie deal.
pet sounds beach boys goes hard af
I’m really enjoying watching your videos. People weren’t necessarily imitating the Beatles or trying to be the Beatles. Many of these groups were fabulous groups but what the Beatles did was opened peoples eyes to the fact that we didn’t have to continue the 50s into the 60s. And their songwriting blazed new trails and open the doors for people to explore more. The Beach boys for example, did an album that Paul McCartney said was a huge influence on the Beatles Sergeant peppers album. That album by the Beach. boys was pet sounds. The Supremes were supreme. Love them. And the Motown sound. The Beatles helped push out the conformist 50s that allowed people to dress and compose music and express themselves in the 60s. The Byrds were a great band, and those purple glasses were really popular. But a lot of the greatest music of the 60s didn’t reach the number one position on the Billboard charts including many Beatles songs. The 60s was a wealth of creativity, originality, musicianship and talent. The thing about the 60s was that you could hear all kinds of music on the radio including instrumentals. The Beatles opened the door.
One thing about this video. The clips of the music were much too short to appreciate anything about them. A video that was about three times longer with three times longer on each piece of music would’ve been more instructive. I don’t know if anybody’s made such a thing.
"My boyfriend's black and you're gonna be in trouble" 😂
Motown was a monster hit machine in the sixties and The Supremes got the lion's share of great material. They were all over television which is something the Beatles rarely did. The song Hey Jude for instance was given special air time in the evening. Word was put out that the Beatles would introduce a new song at 8:30pm on some channel. I remember my aunts and uncles coming over and at 8:30 everything stopped, the Beatles were on. One song, one showing, live. If you missed it, you didn't see it. There was no place to watch it again. They were that special.
The Beatles still had number one hits through 1970. They had a total of 21 number 1 hits through 1970. And by this time, their whole albums were charting at number one. And even if they didn’t chart every song at number one, remember, they had 34 hits that reached the top 10 in the charts. AND they had 71 more songs which charted in the Top 40…meaning they were in radio rotation. And the radio was IT! We ALL listened to the radio all the time! So the Beatles in the 60’s through 1970…were ALL OVER THE RADIO EVERY DAY! And after they broke up in 1970, they ALL started recording solo albums and they were ALL creating hit records and winning Grammy awards! Paul and Ringo are STILL RECORDING!
Pet Sounds is a gorgeous album, you will love it. Absolutely beautiful songwriting, and wildly innovative in pop music.
Pet Sounds actually inspired Sgt. Peppers to a large extent. And was itself made in response to The Beatles Rubber Soul. The Beach Boys and The Beatles had a short stint where they were trying to one-up each other, and it led to some amazing music.
The Beach Boys earlier music definitely has that "surf" sound like you said, but Pet Sounds is a pretty big departure from that. Brian Wilson was a musical genius. Just listen to "Wouldn't It Be Nice" or "God Only Knows" if you want sufficient motivation to hear the whole album :)
Surf City was Jan & Dean who preceded The Beach Boys but in a similar vein… there’s some good stuff in there… There are Beatles songs that aren’t on albums so you should check out Past Masters which are the Beatles singles. A World Without Love by Peter and Gordon was written by Paul McCartney of the Beatles who was with Peter Asher’s sister so he gave that to them because it wasn’t Beatles enough… 😁
24:52 jojo was a man who thought he was a loner
But he was a frying pan 😂😂😂😂
Paul McCartney wrote that song World Without Love. John and George hated it and it went straight to number 1 and the redhead you saw first singing it was Peter Asher Paul’s girlfriend’s brother.
the Beach Boys were huge. Top 3 band of the 60s. And the HARMONIES written by Brian Wilson, and his genius in the studio arranging and producing their music puts them in elite company with the greatest bands that ever recorded. Don't sell them short. Listen to their greatest masterpieces, "Good Vibrations" and "God Only Knows" before you give up on them. They have a VERY DEEP catalog.
