I am a chimera. My "secret" twin is a fraternal brother, which makes my condition much more rare. I also have multiple sclerosis, which is an autoimmune disease, and the docs do and have done a lot of studies on me to see how this whole thing works and how it affects not only me, but also other chimaras both now, and in the future. For that reason I'm always wanted for clinical trials. I guess I'm a bit of a human guinea pig, but if it helps other people, I'm more than glad to be one. If I can't help humanity out in any other way, at least I'm useful in this one way.

"Without this army of microscopic interlopers you literally wouldn't survive." Well... That's like saying, a ruptured Appendix if not treated in 24 hours is fatal. Well...
About a decade ago, the week before Thanksgiving, I was in retail management and having 'gut pain'. Well, the week before Turkey day (here in the states) is kind of busy, so I tried to ignore it. But then the Tuesday before, I called into work to say I was gonna visit the Doctor, and I might be a little late. The Doctor said "appendicitis" and had me drive myself over to the local hospital where I met a surgeon and we talked about my "in and out the next day" surgery, all done through "one little hole." Next thing I knew I was waking up and my ex-wife (and still good friend) was leaning over me saying "you almost died!" I said hi, what's she doing here, and what is she talking about? I learned that it sometimes happens, and did to me, that an appendix can rupture, reseal itself, and repeat the process over and over. And thus I'd done a good job of poisoning myself. So I ended up with several days in the hospital, three holes (instead of one), and the Doctor told me he'd basically had to use antibiotics to kill everything in there, good and the bad... and for 90 days I had to eat A Lot of yogurt (I hate yogurt). So yeah I got a lot of my "microscopic interlopers" wiped out, and survived a ruptured appendix for a week. I don't recommend it.
As always thank you so very much for the video.

Only watched the beginning of the video so far, but as far as the case you talk about where the mother is genetically the aunt of two of her children, it's very clear to me what is going on: chimerism. Clearly Karen had a fraternal twin in utero and absorbed that twin, but parts of Karen's body continue to have the genetic markers of that twin. It can sometimes be certain glands, or bone marrow, or (in women) one of the ovaries (which is likely in Karen's case, thus causing one ovary to produce eggs with her DNA while the other produces eggs with her sister's DNA). Chimeras can exhibit having saliva representing one DNA profile while blood and other bodily fluids represent another profile. Now to continue and see if I'm right!
(Edit after finishing video) Yay! I was right! But even though I already knew about chimerism, I still learned a lot in this video. For example, I didn't know that mothers retained some of the fetal stem cells of their children, even decades later, or that some small amount of those could be passed on to younger siblings. So my sister, who was born about 17 years after me, might have a tiny amount of my DNA in her system. Thanks for teaching me something, Thoughty2!
Just thought of a question. What about children that are either aborted or miscarried? Does the mother retain some of the cells from them as well? I'm the eldest of five (only one other shares the same mother with me), but I learned about twenty years ago that my mother had a pregnancy before me, however that pregnancy didn't go to term (I'm unclear on whether she had an abortion or a miscarriage, but the result either way is that I have no older siblings). Would her body have retained some of the fetal stem cells from my lost older sibling and is it therefore possible that a small number of those cells were passed on to me? If so, I actually find that kind of comforting; my big brother or sister may not have survived to term, but he or she could still be alive inside Mum and me. I like that thought.
