Thanks for doing the Cymru Premier, great to see Wales included. Would love to see one too of the Welsh Premiership Rugby grounds, there's some great old, famous proper rugby grounds in there. And for next season 2 of the oldest and most famous teams will be back in it, as Pontypool and Neath got promoted this season.
Bendigedig! Diolch am y sylw! Great to see the Welsh Prem featured - though, as you note, all the clubs are in small towns (populations of about 20,000, though Barry has a population of about 50,000 people, hence their posh athletics ground!) so all the grounds are small. It may not seem it, but the grounds have improved a lot in the last few years and many if not all, have astroturf as they get income from hiring out the pitches to local 5-a-side leagues and develop their own football academies. The Welsh cities - Cardiff, Swansea, Newport and Wrexham play in England.
I find it fun that a few Premier Leagues feature college teams, UCD in Ireland, Cardiff Met Uni in wales, there's two in Chile. And i think there's a few more.
Played at quite a few of those grounds and my favorite of them is Haverfordwests ground lovely little setup and much more enclosed than most grounds in Wales.
visited Aberystwyth and Newtown. one of the other unusual thing about the stands at Newtown is that the changing rooms are at the top of the stairs of the biggest stand so the teams have to go through the crowd
Love the sarcastic humour 😅 For viewers who don’t know, Cardiff City, Swansea, Newport County, Wrexham and Merthyr town all play in the English football league and non league system’s.
I used to Play for Flint many years ago, a lovely stadium with a rock hard pitch. Nice to see they've added a couple stands on the far side. Judging by the overhead pic Norman the groundsman is still there with that wonky halfway line. Lol.
As far as stereotypes go loving guns, Bibles and cheeseburgers is a pretty good one. All three are great, its like the stereotype of having tackle bigger than a breadbox. Its a compliment.
Part of me was wondering why the stadiums are generally small, but then I remembered that a lot of the biggest clubs in Wales actually play in the English Football system, and not the Welsh system.
Cardiff, Swansea, Newport, Wrecsam & Merthyr all playing in England. Colwyn Bay also played in England until very recently. This has meant that our league has been hamstrung over the years both in terms of facilities, competitiveness and financially. Hopefully things improve over the next 20 years though!
@CMJordz 22 @@AmirBrooks On the contrary most of the pronunciation was awful! If you genuinely think otherwise your knowledge of Welsh is even worse than his! Maes Tegid, Caernarfon, Cae Castell, especially all utterly, utterly WRONG! And the inane commentary (e.g. about "Barry") was infuriating.
Hopefully we're not too far away from a video on next season's NIFL Premiership grounds, though the promotion/relegation playoff has been delayed to Tuesday 30th May for the first leg, and Thursday 1st June for the second. Weirdly, the team that might be promoted, Annagh United, have designated Coleraine Showgrounds (over 60 miles away) to be their home ground, because their own isn't up to Premiership standard. This is despite having three Premiership-quality stadiums based within 15 miles of their location - including Dungannon Swifts, the team they're playing in the playoff.
Newi Cefn Druids ground 'The Rock' is the best Welsh ground I've visited. Set within a quarry, surrounded on one side of the pitch by an imposing rock face.
Abergavenny Thursdays used to be in that league and they had a huge grandstand. I sat up in the top row to watch a match. I think the club went bust, though and no idea if the stadium is still there.
Thanks for showing the Welsh lge. I live very local to Colwyn Bay's ground & all was going well but @ 3:51 the photos change & for 7 seconds that is not CBFC's ground, it 100% isn't! I'm not sure where it is . Love your pronunciation btw, i always cheer for the effort. Good luck mate..
When you described Whales at the start, I genuinely thought it you making a joke since a lot of Welsh people (me included) live close to the water, since not a lot of the mountainous parts of the country are super livable.
Appreciate you making this video but I must admit, I thought my fellow Englishmen were poor in pronouncing Welsh place names, but your Aussie pronounciation makes the English sound like native speakers!! At least you had a go! I think the river in Aberystwyth you declined to pronounce was the Rheidol, which is pronounced Ray-doll.
Our school PE teacher would always punish bad behavior by making students write " 40 x lines on Wales", every time without fail the response was 'Which Wales'.
Honestly, that’s unfortunate that there’s no Cymru Premier team who played at Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch, imagine the name of the stadium and the name of the team, it won’t fit on the team’s logo.
Sorry chum you've made a serious error with the spelling of that Anglesey town. It should be Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch!
@@TheMrPeteChannel What is up with Welsh names? Nothing. Llanfair PG is a total exception, named as a gimmick to attract tourists. Spoiler alert - it worked! Most places in Wales have names similar in length to England's and can be as short as "Rhyl"! They're also easy to pronounce correctly (once you learn the letter sounds) as Welsh is completely phonetic, unlike English. The usual complaint is that Welsh words have 'not enough vowels', which is a complete misunderstanding due to English traditionally defining its vowels as just a e i o u (y is actually a vowel in English too but don't tell the makers of C4 Countdown, it'll blow their minds!) Y and W are both widely used in Welsh to represent vowel sounds. Depending on the context, y can be pronounced either as a short "u" like the vowel in "bus", or as "i" like in "pig". The Welsh w is used for a slightly longer, soft "o" sound like the "oo" in "pool" or "soot". Then there's "ll", "dd", "ng", "ch" and "ngh" to master....
My beef is why Welsh teams Cardiff, Swansea and now Wrexham are allowed to play in the English football league. This is not an anti Welsh thing btw my Mother is Welsh. ( we all have our cross to bare I suppose lol)
When it was formed the EFL as it is now known was not intended just to be an English League, it was meant to cover all of Britain and Ireland. The SFA objected, but the FAW didn't (at the time). I firmly support the right of any club in Britain to play in whichever League is willing to take them, so if a Welsh club wants to join the pyramid and gets accepted, good luck to them. I saw Colwyn Bay when they still played in English football. I remember Gretna playing in English football, too.
Scotland have 2 teams from Berwick in our pyramid. It doesn’t make sense for them to play in the Northumbrian leagues and there’s no issues with them playing in Scotland so why not? It makes for some good banter too 😂
Basically with TNS. Some guy bought out a club called Llansantffraid (who had previously played in European competition), changed their name to Total Network Solutions and moved them just over the border into Oswestry (which is practically half Welsh anyway). So what happened was a rich a-hole took their local club away into another country and they had to restart their club and called it Llansantffraid Village FC.
Here for the pronouncements
