All righty here is our interview from yesterday with Game Director of Path of Exile 2, Jonathan Rogers. If you've seen our WoW interviews in the past then you'll be familiar with our approach - this is intended to be more casual and conversational and will not be focused on finding out specific information or big reveals. Instead Mike will be geared towards questions which are interesting to current non-PoE players and in more of the game design philosophy side of things.
Why geared more towards nonpoe players? Cause making content for people that don't understand poe is what people want? Why are players like yourself and Zizaran so interested in the "new player experience" when you are absolute blasters that will demolish the game and poe2 is trying to appeal to people that don't need their hand held
Skippable short cutscenes between acts that summarizes the main plot could be one possible way to deliver lore for those who want to understand wtf is going on.
@@Z0mbie432It has nothing to do with trying to make the game holds peoples hand and the tribal level thinking of "i have to suffer so new players has to as well" is why PoE1 has plateau'd in players in recent years (literally what jonathan himself has stated recently)
Making the game a little more accessible for new players to not be so heavily punished will ensure the game can actually grow more consistently over the years. You can still make a game with depth and complexity but still have a more accessible game in the early game. I mean lets be real, PoE's actual depth and complexity doesnt really start until you hit maps anyway. The problem is the early game lacks info for new players to understand it at a baseline that it kills any potential for actual growth and that should be cleaned up. Theres no reason basic info should be locked behind outside resources.
@@Z0mbie432 there are already people better suited for handling the big reveals and the existing playerbase. Mike has an audience of MMO fans and other gamers who won't be as familiar.
@@omegacloud222 what a false interpretation of the feedback GGG have received over the years. The depth and complexity people are overwhelmed by has nothing to do with the mechanical combat. The main thing GGG seek to improve and the starting foundation for poe2 was the combat mainl melee, as stated by Jonathan in a recent interview. Only the most BLASTER players who ALWAYS lean on broken meta and seek to find it are the only players seemingly concerned with the "nmew player perspective" and it's ONLY when talking about mechanical difficulty when it comes to bosses. These youtubers have gone too far and the secrets out it's so obvious now from years of watching them feedback mechanical difficulty out of these games from their throne of authority while they use the most cringe easy builds and make all end game in mmos and arpgs look stupid and not respecting of actual gamer that can not only use and make builds like they can but can also handle much higher mechanical skill that they are constantly trying to feedback out the game. No one actually cares about the "new player perspective" everyone watching Zizaransd and Preachs stream are most definitely experienced players it's bullshit and I'm done with it.
I'm kind of on Jonathans side here regarding campaign skips. It occured to me one day that every time in an ARPG I have skipped a campaign, I have felt more negatively towards the endgame of that game afterwards. If you go straight to "the fun stuff" that overindulgence in "fun stuff" without putting any effort towards it just takes away the fun part of it for me. Now I do think a second character in a league should be significantly faster through lvling uniques and all that jazz. I also think there should be clever skips, tips, and tricks hidding away in a campaign that allows you to run it significantly faster as an experienced player than you would as an inexperienced one.
Some great examples of this would be the portal saving trick in Act 1 for the side boss in Submerged Passage and in Act 3 the Tolman side boss, or the ability to just read the Vaal City map that can also save full minutes potentially. It's little things like that sprinkled around making you feel like your experience actually matters in the campaign, and since it makes you faster it doesn't bother me as much that I have to do it again. Even stuff like knowing which order to fix your resistances is actually pretty big in the campaign currently. Like your first time you'll have all this cool gear and you know resistances are important so you'll fix them but it's crazy hard now because you got 20% all res instead of capped cold res on Merveil.
It's stuff like that which will save a lot of time and effort as experience keeps building up and just throwing players into the endgame like, well... Now you gotta stack all resistances at once and you gotta go fight endgame bosses on a build that's not complete yet, and you'll only do 1 single activity over and over again because it's the highest exp/hr and you just want to level up now because with lack of the campaign exp is the only relevant thing remaining to the game for the next 10 hours. The way it makes you play to not have a campaign kind of forcing you to experience and build up your actual character first before going back to the grind just makes the game worse. It's how GGG has protected us all this time from our own impulses the way I see it. Hell, diablo 2 is still a great game and that game is literally just running the campaign 3 times and then farm 1 area for days until you can do ubers and even that's better than most games that let you skip the campaign :p
Imo all it needs is make waypoints accessible acct wide. With good gear and effort it really doesn't take that long, but waypoints will cut down on some of the bland running.
I guess as examples, Grimdawn lets you just skip side areas by building a bridge if you have the mats. Things like that are acceptable but entirely skipping is just bad.
Last epoch has more new examples of campaign "skips". Not clicking a button to get a high level character, I personally don't like that in any RPG, but routes to alternate leveling paths for alts. In LE you can use an arena key to bypass parts of the campaign and you can just level up using the endgame maps early.
This is what I thought Poe was testing with endless delve, alternative ways to level other than running through the campaign (whether faster or not). As has been shown from the success of LE and others, there's no real downside to alternative leveling routes for alts. You still have to play and level and gear, you just get to choose how you want to do it
I think conceptualizing the end game as "the fun stuff" and the campaign as "effort" you need to go through to enjoy the endgame is something devs of any of these games would be very much against as an idea. They tend to spend a lot of time, effort and money on the campaigns: campaigns tend to be the most bespoke content in these games, and devs tend to place much more value on those campaigns than the most vocal highly engaged sections of the playerbase.
The problem I have is that there's just not much variety in everything related to the campaign, its always the same. And sure its fun the first 3, 4, 5 maybe 10 times. But after that it just becomes boring. You don't have access to all your tools, you're just going through the motions to get 'the fun stuff' unlocked. All the skills you want to use, the variety of customization you can do in mapping content. et cetera.
I've always played more characters of different varieties in games that do allow me to skip the campaign because I can much more easily skip the (if you're fast) 5-6 hour tutorial that is the campaign. It's a huge hurdle for people that play with me too, a lot of them only ever stick to one build the entire league because "oh god I have to do the campaign again". The real character building only starts after the campaign anyway.
While they say they intend to make the campaign exciting every playthrough I just don't see how you can do that without making it so you always have your tools mostly available from the start, and have it be random enough that it's essentially mapping.
The only one that is tolerable so far is Last Epoch because when you go fast theirs is basically done in like less than 3 hours if you skip into monoliths early. The only reason its tolerable is because it's short. GGG does not aim for short campaigns.
I trust the GGG devs to make an excellent game, but I am skeptical this campaign thing is them being stubborn like they have been with trade for the past 10 years and only now are they finally like "wait hang on we can't call ourselves a serious arpg anymore if we don't improve this"
Thank you Preach and Jon
Thanks Preach team. Such a good interview. Director seems like he REALLY cares. Love it!
I think it's really telling how much the devs care about this game. Explaining the thought process certain decisions (Ex dying early to the first boss) is one thing, but seeing how excited and hyped about that discussion from Jonathan shows his true feelings about the game. It truly shows his passion and is amazing to see in the industry! Hope the weekend goes great!
Seeing this guy's enthusiasm for their game is beautiful
Fantastic interview! Thanks for taking a different angle.
man this what blizzards needs to do
love how ggg has progressed since first releasing poe1 as we speaking playing poe
always go back to it
looking forward to poe2
legit bought 2 steam decks for poe and other action rpg games
The blizzard "devs" are just executives that use some formulaic corporate process to delegate tasks across a thousand people and have little to no personal attachment to the product they're making which is why not one of them can actually give an interview like this one.
Awesome interview. Super happy that Johnathan understands that skipping campaign would just make the game straight up worse.
"You think you, do but you don't" is generally speaking correct. It was just the one time that it was said was the most egregiously wrong case of it.
As someone who mainly doesn't play PoE because playing through the campaign over and over sounds mind numbingly boring after I did it once, why do you feel that not being able to skip it and in my instance, being able to get to the content that I want to do, make the game better?
I just want to second to Mosan13. I've only played two last leagues in poe (ever) and I feel like I've done campaign one too many times.. That's one of the reasons why I'm planing to not even try the next league. The campaign itself is really "meh". I've started the game with dedication to follow through everything that's going on, but mid act I found the campaign repulsive and realised that I will quit the game if I keep trying to follow what's going on. So I just went through it like a "checklist" what I have to do and it was "okay-ish". And to be fair I'm glad that I did cause I actually ended up playing something like 250hrs with my first character + 100hrs in PoB/craftofexile and such and having lots of fun. Playing second time I viewed the campaign as a chore that I have to do in order to enjoy the game.. What helped was that a friend agreed to try out the game and we went through the campaign together while chatting. That did definitely help.
@@Mosan13for me it’s about seeing a build come together and getting stronger over time, what’s the point of levels if you just jump to 60/70 instantly? Also how would you gear your character before maps? Would you just be given a set of random rare gear? You would most likely have to go back and farm for rares or orbs to make gear that actually works for you anyway. There are MANY variables to be accounted for when you talk about skipping that huge chunk of progression.
I don't think people want to skip campaign. I think they just want to be able to do it for 2nd+ characters after you did it once in a league.
POE 1’s beginning is trivializing easy? Uhhh has he gone against the Rhoas in mudflats since they updated them? They’re legit the hardest monsters in the entire game 😂
tho you can them kite them around tree's ^^ learned it the hard way makes it much more smoother
But if you play like a noob and clear a lot, get some gear and stuff, they're trivial. Only hard if all you've killed before you got there is Hillock.
@@albinjarnroth1065 nah man i did them almost naked in the last gauntlet hc ssf on lvl 2 as i said learned it the hard way
Act1 is by far the hardest part of the campaign
cringe@@Serdar1572
If the campaign has some variety/variation, there's not need for a skip. Campaigns are usually better than the alternative of just doing endgame with a lvl 15 character.
This is the real answer to the question that was too obvious for Johnathan to remember in the moment. The campaign will be significantly more fun and, therefore, become the game, not simply a gateway to it
or you know, you let people who dont want to do it for the millionth time skip it and those who like to do it again can do it again - one of those groups is being served right now and arguing that other people should not be servied even though that would not take anything away from anyone. It is amazingly selfish.
The level of understanding and how they analyze the components that make a game good leaves me with a sense of calm because I have the upmost confidence that they will get it done right. I've seen a lot of interviews that he has had with some really hard-core players but I am excited to hear that they are putting a lot of focus on the rest of us and that they are interested in hearing what the other 99% have to say
Always a joy listening to Jonathan and the sort of critical thinking he has with his team. Great questions Preach.
Hoping beta is available for console June 7 🙏
If you are able to get a PC to play this game I would strongly recommend it. I started playing POE on PS5/PS4 then I got so addicted to it I bought a PC only to play POE and the upcoming POE 2 beta. The PC version of POE is far superior to the PS5/PS4 version (in terms of graphics, interface, trade economy, etc.). This game is PC prioritized and unfortunately there has been zero mention of any POE 2 beta happening on console in June. My guess is that we won't see any version of POE 2 on console until 2025.
@@silkysoy1794 I had the option only recently to get a new PC or console and went with a PS5. Like you the main reason for PC was PoE but I couldn’t justify the extra spend for one game. Plus I really like sitting on the couch after a long day and the simplicity of a console. If it’s delayed I’ll just move to something else. BG3 has been calling but I’ve been putting it off because I know once I start I won’t put it down and I only have time for one game
@@silkysoy1794 I was looking into PC for the same reason recently but ended up getting a PS5 because after a day at work I like sitting on the couch and the simplicity of a console. Affliction was my first league and loved the complexity of it after coming from D4. BG3 has been calling and sounds like I’ll be firing that up instead
@@silkysoy1794I honestly recommend they wait doing that. That's what I'm doing. I would love to participate in the best as a console player, but I don't believe it is worth getting a pc at this moment in time without confirmation of cross-mtx between consoles and pcs. I am sure they wouldn't want to spend more money just for stuff they already have like stash tabs and I'm in the same boat. I still have hope it will come to console before beta ends but if it doesn't, it doesn't. I have come to accept that. I find it weird they haven't talked about it and rather avoid the question and give partial answers, which keeps me hopeful. If they are working on getting it to consoles in beta and can't talk about it, that would be a pleasant surprise but I am going to try to keep my expectations at a medium rather than get myself super hyped about it like I have been.
And trust me I think every console player knows how much better poe is on pc. In both the economy and performance. Hopefully the future is brighter for consoles in certain regards when it comes to that
I would argue that it isn't easy to respec at level twenty if you're a new player. At level 20, you probably haven't even seen an Orb of Regret yet. And leveling through act 1 and 2 (specifically act 1) is incredibly daunting to a new player because of its difficulty.
by that point you should have a handful of respec points from quests.
at level 20 there's virtually nothing you'd need to respec that would brick your character to be unusable.
Great interview. Love hearing about Jonathan's philosophy
Thx for a good interview. Shout out to the person typing the summaries.
Jonathan is amazing
35:25 There is also a chance that death logs increase both the accessibility and the fantasy of the game.
If you notice that any given boss fight tends to kill you with a certain mechanic or damage type, that could incentivize you to gather a piece or a set of resistance or otherwise tanky gear to enhance your survivability in that encounter.
Or alternatively it can help you troubleshoot and enhance your lacking gear or build in general.
I couldn't tell you the amount of times I completely scrapped my character and rerolled (or stopped) because I couldn't figure out what I was doing wrong.
Great interview! Fantastic content with compelling questions! conversation was so natural, kudos
Hey, I've never watched you before but you're a great interviewer, good job!
Great interview! Can't wait for more news after this weekend's test.
Poe 2 looks like a masterpiece already. Every a-rpg has turned into brainless afk farming, poe2 looks so precise and purposeful making the player have more agency in all their gameplay decisions
I loved the transparency of Jonathan. He knows exactly what makes their game amazing and the flaws it has. So hyped for poe 2
With the amount of love and work they seem to be putting in the campaign and it's bosses, I understand Jonathan's point on not wanting people to skip it.
Also PoE developed a speedrunning culture that's quite unique for the genre, it might be even bigger in PoE 2 since the game will have way more challenging bosses in it's campaign.
Easily one of the best of the many interviews GGG is doing ahead of the big POE2 testing weekend - and TBH I don't really watch much of Preach's content. Obviously the 10k+ hr POExpert players have insights and questions that only come from that degree of experience, but I found Preach's position (someone who loves the game, has fewer hours invested, but has a ton of experience with a plethora of other games) to offer some unique and insightful questions. Credit always of course to Jonathan as well, whose candor and passion are a delight.
Dude, great fking questions, thank you
I love how John's brain works
Looking forward to playing through their new Campaign and trying out I want to see if my Necromancer is still viable.
Town dialog could just be "go there and I'll instruct you"
Then when you get there it could play back as you start playing the area.
It's a bit 'radio buddy' style but exposition during gameplay for action games is always preferable.
MOST of the complexity is from game concepts (league, damage, etc) not being explained in game properly (or at all) - Using Wikis and TH-camrs as a default crutch is not good strategy. Having said that, the amount of varied content GGG brings into the game keeps it fresh and keeps it at the top of the genre. I just wish they were more keen on improving UX
I totally get where John is going with the respeccing changes he's basically saying the base power of cheaply swapping to a better build is higher even if you don't have the refund points to fully change your tree
I swapped my first char from assassin eye of winter brand to hexblast miner saboteur around lvl 70. There was friction but it was definitely doable. People seem to forget that we get 20 something respec points in the campaign and you can swap chance orbs to regrets at the vendor.
noooo... why does respec has some cost!!! 🤡🤡🤡
(sarcasm)
Great interview. Some answers are not what I would like but still craving for PoE2.
If map bosses are even fraction of the greatness that is endgame PoE bosses it's a huge win. I remember how I was fucking amazed at endgame boss fights and spammed my friends with clips from them
YO WHEN DA INTERVIEW WITH DAT BIG ASS CAT IN THE BACK IS DROPPING I AM ALL HERE FOR IT
regarding damage received, i envision something like the following UI element - dynamic 'pie chart' that will register individual instances of damage received as a colorcoded lines radiating from the center of a circle, with pre-set slices of the circle per damage type - one instance of dmg received - one line, length or eve width proportional to the effective lifepool (including resistances) .. the more instances the more lines (each new hit a new line randomly within the slice) and fade them out over 4 seconds or so
this would give the player a quick recap of the dmg received without taxing the ui or eyes much with stuff like scrolling combat text, overhead numbers etc
From all the console players who have bought support packs. Thanks for letting us play your PC game.
100% mapping in PoE2 will be boats to islands :D Great interview Preach
It worries me that they are never talking about Blight in these interviews. It's not very popular, but a very unique game mode and a nice change of pace. I'm hoping it will be in poe 2
For the conversation system... why not do the same as the environment texts? as it can follow you while playing? a bit like in borderlands that switches between "real life voice" to "communicator" but inside the PoE lore.
EDIT: for example, while I like last epoch a lot, the conversation system of question&answer and thousand clicks to get each mission is very boring. It has become a minigame for me of clicking the yellow thing as quick as possible, while in borderlands I do listen to what the NPCs have to say, because I'm playing in the meantime I have the lore exposition.
Amazing interview. This is legitimately the shit that I love. I think preach should try last Epoch and interview the devs for it next.
I completely agree with the death philosophy, Elden ring got it just right. I want to die a few times, but have death be less punishing.
Backtracking is just boring and unrewarding. More checkpoints, more deaths.
I hope their console team can raise the quality and eventually add crossplay. D4 has a multitude of issues, but the ease of coordinating and playing with friends is easier than any other isometric ARPG on the market. It would be nice to have some alternatives.
Great Interview. Upload is a little to late I already saw a summary of it on another chanel.
who asked
Great talk. I really hope console comes fast.
Cold day in hell, indeed. What a character!
If they end up with a lot of unused recorded voice acting, they could probably sell it as some sort of audiobook
Jonathan's comment about on a whim just doubling the mob damage across the board the night before the testing explains so much about the first 2-4 days of every new league content's monster damage. Betrayal anyone?
If they are so insistent on the economic gatekeeping of pinnacle bosses, can we at least get a training room or something? In my experience, one of the biggest turnoffs to a new player is that they don't get to learn the mechanics of each boss. They have no currency, no knowledge of how to make it fast, no currency in standard either to treat it as a training ground. Nothing feels worse than spending a bunch of currency to observe the boss's move. Then die anyway (because of course you did), waste the currency, and also lose XP. The sad thing is, they won't even learn anything from that death due to stress, clarity, etc. Their next try might not be for days, if ever. By that time, they don't even remember the cause of their last death.
Bosses are supposed to be mastered, not avoided. No new player I've seen sees any sense in even trying the content, waiting for their build to "one-shot"/"face-tank" the bosses, which can never happen due to their inexperience. Even many relatively experienced players don't know the mechanics well, they just know how to build a character that can ignore them for the most part. Can we please enjoy these boss fights you guys say you're proud of without worrying about currency constantly? Can we have a game where a lot of people try ubers, but not many can beat them? Rather than not many even try them and most who try will nuke them? I rather smash my face in on a new boss and learn, than look up a video that explains the mechanics.
This is such a good take. It's hard enough to just acquire the pieces to initiate boss fights, and the LAST thing I want to do as a dad-player is throw half a div away to attempt something I already know I won't succeed at. Even if I DO succeed I'll still probably end up disappointed to some degree because the achievement/unlock related to the win still isn't worth the currency I put in, at least not to someone who has limited enough time to put in that half a divine is really significant.
I don’t know if im the right person to talk about this because i have like 2000+ hours playtime but PoE 1 bosses are very different to PoE 2 bosses imo. Elder and Shaper only have like 3 mechanics and are very much farmable if you specc your atlas tree into dropping more maps for their crests and so on. If you can’t figure the boss out in 6 portals or if you are to weak as a character to kill them you shouldn’t kill them. Maven is also very much farmable invitation just keep dropping. And you also get uber elder crests because you are spamming elder and shaper right? Exarch and Eater are a passive farm you can easily do 2 a day even as a das if you want to. I don’t really see the issue with actually being able to do those bosses without currency. I think the main issue is knowing how to be able to farm them. Also if you struggle against them you shouldn’t do their Uber encounters either. Its like if you cant do Heroic you for sure shouldn’t be able to do mythic. So yeah i don’t think people avoid them because they are difficult or have to many mechanics people just don’t want or know how to farm them without paying 150c per try. So i think its better to solve that issue than changing bosses themselves. As i said i think poe 2 bosses are very different from poe 1 bosses. The have way more clarity from what i have seen and feel like actual bosses in comparison to poe1 bosses. But we will see i get your points tho!!
You have a complete lack of understanding about what makes game design effective. What you think you want would undermine the game and you would no longer want to play it. If you want this sort of game, go play something else. I hope GGG never caves to senseless opinions like this
@@hogi2599 Everything you said is true if you know the game well enough. However, I don't think a boss like Shaper, as simple as he might be, can be figured out in 6 tries for a first-time player (good character or not). If he was, so many people would not have such high moments when they finally beat him (and so many do). Mechanics take time to digest and figure out. I am also an experienced player myself so I can't disagree with much of what you said about farming the bosses. But I'm not talking about farming. Paywall farming, that's only fair. I'm talking about a new player who just wants to fight the big bad boss, die, try again, and finally beat them in 6 portals and feel badass about it. Actually, many more builds are capable of doing this content if skills were higher. If you have a training room, with no rewards, maybe even some gold cost per try, people can get good and then go try the boss with its invitation and stuff for real. This is kinda of what hardcore players do anyway, except their training ground is Standard where they have infinite money. That's all I'm saying. It really doesn't matter if PoE 2 bosses are different honestly, the access issue persists.
The problem lies with you and not the game. This is something you need to figure out rather than expecting the game to cater to your needs and wants. Without the current system, and instead utilising your version, the bosses would no longer become pinnacle and they wouldn't be a chase or a sense of achievement to be able to actually complete and clear. What it sounds like is you don't have enough time to play this game at that level. I have the same issue. Difference being I understand why I can't and am fine with it because not everything should be obtainable by everyone. @@hamedpakatchi4196
28:45 "and we doubled it" - Jonathan channelling his inner Jay Wilson (Diablo 3 meme for those that don't know)
Just thought this was funny; I feel like GGG is doing good work here.
i am looking forward to poe 2 immensely. the thing that worries me the most though is this "you actually have to beat the boss in one try" philosophy. i'm a rather new poe player but that is something I absolutely love about the game. you died to the boss? no worries, just resurrect and pick up where you left off. I can easily see how that is not satisfying to some but to me that's just exactly what I want. i personally do not like souls games whatsoever. i cannot for the life of me find motivation to attempt and learn an npc 400 times over. i just can't. and beating a boss like that gives me not even close to the amount of satisfaction other people seem to get. I couldn't care less, I just want to be done with it.
i don't know why i am like that. but it's just how it is and I know for a fact it is how many other people are as well. on the other hand, give me a pvp game and I can sit down for hundreds and hundreds of hours perfecting something in order to become a better player. unsurprisingly, I don't like older games very much either because they almost always have that hardcore element implemented where you have to achieve the perfect run in order to progress.
so, if POE2 actually will force me to attempt bosses dozens or even hundreds of times, it may not be the game for me. which would be terrible since I really want it to be the game for me. but I don't think I will ever grow to enjoy this type of gameplay. on the other hand, I like hearing that beating a boss seems to be more mechanically skill-based in poe2 than simply just a matter of being a numbers wizard running around with the perfect build.
whatever, I'm still looking very much forward to november. until then.
Don't worry, I don't believe GGG's intention is for players to attempt a boss HUNDREDS of times. I'm guessing that most campaign bosses might kill you 10-20 times in some of the worst cases, and will often be able to be defeated in fewer attempts
34:34 Bruh... diablo 2 had this, and the entile community of PoE was screaming for years for GGG to make obvious indications for all threatening statuses and it was ignored
I just want to play Templar or a Paladin like class
I've played PoE for over a decade and I'm so done with the campaign. It's been 2 leagues now in a row that I don't even finish the campaign with my first character of the league. I just hate it so much and you can't pay me to play through it again. Therefore I also don't feel the need to buy supporter packs if I'm not even going to be playing more than a few hours every 3 to 4 months ... All the cool and interesting things happen once you start mapping, I see no point torturing myself with a campaign that I've probably done over 500 times by now. We need alternate leveling paths, even if they are slower. If I can get to lvl 68 and start mapping just by doing something else first, for example delve, and get all the passives as you reach their supposed levels or do side content in maps I don't know, then I'd be all for it. As it stands, after nearly throwing up 2 league starts in a row, I'm most probably not even going to bother with the next few ones until PoE 2 comes out with a new campaign so that I can play with that for a few years at least.
Jonathan "I want players to die at least twice, and kill the boss on third attempt" Hardcore Players "QQ"
I'm really waiting and hoping for somebody to press Jonathan on the whole "respecs should be punishing/hard" thing, because every time it gets brought up again and he explains further of his reasoning behind it, it's like a new layer of "but that makes no sense to me" opens up.
For example the now current one of "well if you can respec for free then there's no difference between your character and someone else's other than the gear", which is incomprehensible to me because in the current status quo of POE 1, 95% of players are just following a guide to, what do you know, make their character as close to somebody else's character as possible. This is because respecs being hard makes the game even more unforgiving to try out stuff on your own, whereas if they were easy, people would be much more willing to just try out ideas that occur to them and experiment.
One reason it makes no sense to you is because you are making assumptions about how players play the game, EG "95% of players just follow a guide". You need to remember that the sort of players who watch interviews like this are actually a minority of overall players and the way they engage the game can be entirely different to someone who doesn't watch them (which is a much larger portion of the player base).
Being able to respec without consequence means you have less attachment to your build or character. You would be more likely to just wack points/skills etc anywhere without really thinking about your decisions. It's about adding 'weight' to your decisions and incentivising the player to properly engage with (and learn) it's mechanisms.
Diablo 3 and 4 are great examples of players characters not feeling like they have any identity. Both of those games also target a substantially more "casual" audience.
That's because you're looking at poe ninja and stuff. The vast vast majority of players in the game don't even know what the meta builds are, let alone make to yellow maps
@@BryanThePirate"and incentivising the player to properly engage with (and learn) it's mechanisms." And my whole point is that actually it disincentivizes players from doing this because mistakes are so punishing, so they'd rather just go look up someone else's build.
30:00 Elden ring last boss spoiler
Big mistake not coming out on console with cross play...That would cause an effect that sells even more copies even on pc cause it makes it "viral" for lack of a better word...
the game is free to play
I think I have multiple ps5 friends that I have a really high chance of convincing to play if its cross platform...
There are clearly OTHER options, some of them already in the game to some degree, beyond a literally campaign skip - but I just love how some will pretend that's the only option.
If you're going to be dishonest instead of actually making real arguments, why should anyone bother listening to you.
BTW - forcing me to replay a campaign for every character for 6 years is somehow not a wrong message either. I already played, possible three times a year's for 6 years - why is 18 times not enough? doing something else for 60-something levels is a bad message? Pa-lease. I guess it's a good thing so many people are either stupid or easily led.
I totally believe the reason people want death "recap" screens is because the game is so unreadable that they want to point at the recap and say to the devs "this death was bullshit." So I am glad his philosophy is to make things more readable.
Campaign skip being an option would take away from the game for me. It sends the wrong message. Also if someone enjoys the campaign, doing the campaign will be "wasting time" if there is a campaign skip. This to me is not one of the cases where everyone wins if you add the option.
oh, for the love of - its not "well if you don't like campaign, it MUST be a skip, there can be no other option". How about alternate leveling, or a separate map-LIKE leveling system - there is no skipping. But surprised, surprise the people who want forced campaign magically only think in terms of skips vs being forced. Funny how that works.
@@xBINARYGODx League start of POE there is a huge incentive to progress quickly in trade league because of the economy. If GGG added any way to end game that was faster than the campaign than anyone who cared about the "league start" ecomony would be a fool do to the campaign. The campaign being required sets the pace of each league.
what is happening at the weekend? sound like a playtest or something. if so is it under nda (will there be a live-steam)?
they invite content creators for closed beta if i'm not wrong
jonathan was noticeably positively surprised after your questions. Usually it's been rather boring
Lez go!!
Just make OP leveling uniques, shit with +100 damage and -1 damage for each level you gain.
I really don't understand the NEED for a campaign skip.
Sure, the campaign is a bit clunky.
Especially Act 10, but that's just 1 act.
And you need to lvl regardless.
You're always going to have bad drops during lvling.
If it's repetition, endgame has way more repetition than the campaign.
Also, melee player here, so I'm used to clunkyness in re-casting totems all the time.
Act 10 feels clunky? I think act 10 is by far the fastest and cleanest act to play.
@@hogi2599To be fair, he did say a bit clunky, and I agree with that. Traversing the ruined square and canals with all the burning carriages and rubble can get frustrating, especially if you miss the waypoint and have to backtrack. It's definitely not as bad as the old campaign used to be, but it's not exactly great either.
@@hogi2599I mostly mean the distance between the spawn and the waypoint. I always rush it. Don't care about the quest structure. Wasn't a real criticism because I don't mind the campaign anyway.
Good to see Jonathan saying they’ll they consoles seriously, they should make the game crossplay, PoE on console is not good in its current state, the items on the market are really expensive, there’s way less items than PC and it’s very hard to buy or sell things on console, and the league starts a week after the game launched on PC, and mtx don’t carry over if you want to play on PC, this could be fixed by using the same account to log in Diablo 4 has this option, everyone should be able to enjoy the game as much as PC users we are all playing the same game.
Personally, one of the worst things about POE 1 is that it is too fast, so I feel POE 2 is moving in the right direction by being slower pace.
I mean I agree that the vast majority of times we shouldn't even need a death recap system, but on the other hand it being there is still kinda nice anyway, especially until we actually don't need it. I think of it like a car bumper. Like yes of course you'd rather make the car in a way that it cannot possibly crash. But since it can, it's really nice to have a crash tested bumper on your car whenever you actually do crash. Now does it need to be 100% perfect? I don't think that's possible but sure you could try to go for that one day. But in mean time is 80% survival rate orders of magnitude better than 0%? Abso ffing lutely.
the problem is that adding a crash bumper isnt much work, meanwhile adding a whole death log is a shitload of work
as long as you dont need a phd in astrophysics to craft i am in.
You don't need a PhD to craft in PoE, just like you don't have to be a master chef to bake a cake. The master will always make something, better, but that shouldn't stop you from making something good for you.
@@dirtydard4870don't crush peoples reality of being blindfold players who don't want to do anything :D
Wish I could care but lag keeps me from even bothering to update the game anymore. I'm an offline andy by force.
Poe1will last a few seasons
Leave the dialogues, conversations, lore, and all that as is. You don't want to read? You don't want to listen? Go back to slappin mobs fast? Your problem.
👍
For the algorithm
Yeah dud got it totally wrong about character identity. Barbarian is not defined by the skill he's using but the overall class. Love arpgs but the inability to taste things and respect the characters made me never picking this game up. Like... wtf there are so many skills and talents I really don't wanna read all the guides if I end up not even liking the game... I hope that will be much more simplified in POE2. Great interview.
WASD is pretty close to how they Play on consoles
"Baeklast" for PATH OF EXILE 2.
Eh!
EDIT: Gold respec hype tho. My least favorite thing in POE one was breaking a build, cuz respeccing too expensive if you dont have a character at end game that season, and doing the whole story again is wack
Wdym mate, you'll be able to respecc by paying some gold (cheaper in campaign if irc).
@@El_DromedarioYeah i got that part, I was pretty cooked ngl so i dont really know what I was on lol
If PoE 2 caps how powerful your character can be like in D4 and LE it will be dead pretty quick, the main thing that attracts people to PoE in my opinion is that the sky is pretty much the limit. You can make a character as tanky/fast/powerful as you want.
the campaign just has to be great, then having to go through it is fine...
What is going on this weekend that they keep talking about? Is it something that we can watch?
A lot of content creator's are going to LA to play poe 2 and record gameplay etc and there will be interviews that creator's will probably post on there youtube channels. On March 22nd they will have GGG live and will show off the ranger in poe 2 and the new poe 1 league on twitch
@@Takaoshi Thanks friend.
We won't be able to watch it, this is an offline promo event. All content from there will be under embargo until the reveal stream on 22nd.
It's crazy how opposed they are to just giving us death logs. It is absurd at this point. Everything else in the interview was interesting, though.
Jonathan literally said "we'll likely add them at some point, just not at release of the closed beta"...
since when Preach plays PoE?
excuse me? color clarity ? spinnning red piety lazor that does LIGTHNING DMG....or dark blue shaper slam that does? PHYSICAL ofcourse xD........and the friggin barly visible blue wisp this league :P
almost like he is talking about poe 2 and not poe 1
listen to that passage again..they are talkign about the gettign into POE ONE experience and difficulties....its NOT about poe2....@@Rpviewer101-zd2tn
I would play a lot more builds and characters If I could skip the campaign. Even in PoE 2 after we do it like 100 times and the novelty wears I would like the option to skip it on my 2nd character 3rd 4th and so on.
I can understand not skipping the 1st character per league but after that I would very much so prefer the option to skip.
POE has a story?! Are you sure? BTW loved the chat. I wish you had asked about the loot filters - can we have the loot filter from Last Epoch, as it's perfect, please?
Items don't drop identified in POE and that invalidates a good chunk of what makes the LE filter good.
they already said in another interview there will be no looterfilter and you will have to use neversink
@@TheDublord21honestly, I’m okay with that personally because neversink is very easy to use and implement
They already said neversink does a better job than they can, so there's no reason for them to make one. 😂
Being able to skip the campaign = the game is bad.
*cough* Diablo 4 *cough*
Skipping the campaign would be an anti lore feature.
It has some features that are anti lore like shared stash.
I agree shared stash is a must and skipping the campaign is bad but I can't objectively say it is bad. If the feature was added, it would be used like any cheat feature but should it be?
I think playing D4 shows why skipping campaign is bad. (d4s campaign is way too slow but thats another issue) When you play D4 you just IMMEDIATELY play the same content from lvl 1 to 100. You get burnt out much faster with endgame in d4 because nothing ever changes, nothing progresses. Its the same loop and gameplay for eternity. That is why campaigns matter. Also beating campaigns quickly is a skill and an expression of how good a player is. That is also important.
Nothing beats click to move.
But I guess click to move is more for old school gamers nowadays.
POE2 only needs 2 more things to be perfect for me: 1 Character creator and 2 Damage numbers.
But I did enjoy POE1 without those, so...
I love that the #1 criticism of PoE was always the needless visual clutter, but then the first thing players from other ARPGs or WoW want is frickin' DAMAGE NUMBERS.
@@IncredibleGoliath More options is better, based on feedback wasd movement was added and all the developers immediately chose that over click to move based on the interviews they recently had. So... Yeah, more options.
they certainly can if they are some big studio with 8,000 employees and some Bobby Kotick money. but no, since money comes from players, they have to be smart on where to use their development time.
Damage numbers are awful. Just go with results!
The campaign in poe is not good enough to redo over and over and over.
having to replay the acts is the #1 reason why i wont play a season.
sometimes i can bring myself to push through... often i cant.
i just hope we get a key to auto pick up loot. i riot if not-.-
Hey can we can a little hot patch on poe1. Can not send group invites and can not use my headset with POE. Xbox
The GAME isn't to hard. the crafting system is fucking stupid
It's brilliant. It just seems stupid to people who don't understand it yet. When you understand it, you will love it.
I really don't like that he thinks you should tell the player they should expect to die. There's an EXP penalty in the game.
The xp penalty in poe 1 is only after lvl 50 i believe and its only 5% until after the campaign.
Exp Penalty in Poe doesn't do shit until you're level 97+
@@99range92def yes but he's specifically talking about setting them up for the rest of the game in this context.
@@georgefryda Well, yeah. The exp penalty is there for a reason.
If you don't wanna die just get better at the game, is basically all he's saying. lol
I like the idea. Imagine if all the monsters damage in Elden Ring was cut by 80% and it was easy to not die in that game. The entire feeling of the game would change because you would not respect the monsters anymore. I like that they are telling the player to play smart and not just zombie rush through the game, that to me is actual combat. As a bonus, that would make campaign more engaging
While I disagree with Jonathan on campaign skips currently, if they can find a way to vary it up and make it less... tedious, I will happily change my opinion. The worst part of each League is going through the campaign... every single time. I don't know what a good solution is, but god damn does the thought of doing the campaign put me off league starts.
Im in the other boat, i agree with jonathan. I don't like campaign skips and enjoy it on league start every time. 2nd and 3rd character etc rushes throught the campaign anyways, but im not against some sort of system that skips the campaign if they can find one that works well. But i don't think a campaign skip should be faster than doing the campaign, and if there is a campaign skip system you should at least have to do the campaign on the first character every league.
Poe 2 will be a lot faster i think than poe 1 on 2nd and 3rd characters since:
- It will be easier to get gear upgrades from vendor's since you will have more gold (Gold is not tradable)
- Skills don't socket into gear anymore, so no more issues with sockets and links
- Gems will drop at different level's
- Easier respec while leveling
Probably more stuff im forgetting but that's how i feel anyway :)
i agree, i like how in last epoch you have some ways to skip some parts of the story by going left on a fork in the road and doing a dungeon and suddenly you are in act 3 from act 1 for example. something to not make it feel the same. in poe, 1 time is fine, 10 time is fine, but after doing the same campaign 2-3 times per season for years it gets really boring
How does it honestly sound fun playing on pc. Pc experience let me set up straight in my gamer chair like I'm working a office job. Next lets deal with having a shit graphics hard GPU / CPU and constantly tweaking my options.
