This is lovely, Beautiful sounding in all respects. Around 17:58 something extra special happens to the sound, something magical, that just took my breath away--as if the room itself purred. The complicity between violist and pianists, equals in this work, is superb--their re-entry at about 17:09 is perfectly calibrated, so tender and expressive... My old teacher had a Gasparo da Salo viola, unlikely that it's this one, but the sound of those instruments in the hands of players who can handle them, oh myyyyyyy....... Thank you to the players, to GdS, and to Brahms. We are so lucky to be able to come on TH-cam and hear such glories.
Neven played either sonata (Op. 120, Nos. 1 & 2) with a violist before, but this superb recoding shows that Brahms was not just trying to boost sales. The viola songs are indeed gems; the viola's use of the Christmas carol "Josef lieber, Josef mein" (Joseph dearest, Joseph mine) in the second was a truly inspired touch. I would absolutely love to hear Amihai play them.
I agree with you his sound is gorgeous his phrasing is so fine... His tone can be very dramatic and very sweet as well... That is so hard, but he is a master... Lovely playing ❤️
Amihai Grosz is fabulous technically, and plays a wonderful viola. But this performance falls short of the one by Adrien Boissseau, Viola and Gaspard Dehaene, Piano, also on TH-cam who really understand late Brahms.
@@cscscscs8857 no wonder why the tone is phenomenal. A fantastic player can only go so far. Playing a Salo sounds like real hard work but supremely rewarding too.
@@aviolist1414 hahaha. Whenever people ask me "how's the violin career going?" I just reply "going strong thanks." I don't correct them, because when you break down the terminology, etymology, and even translations of the word "violin' into foreign languages it's easy just to think of the instrument as an "alto violin". I'm fine with that. Dutch: violin=viool , viola=altoviool. Can't argue with that! Also: your TH-cam name is "A Violist" and mine is my name plus "...Violist" yet I don't play the viol. Do you? ;P I *did* take your original comment as a joke though, don't worry, I'm not *that* stupid. I just felt like commenting many many many words to start a dialogue :)
@@liamnevilleviolist1809 In France we say "alto", which is short for "violon alto", "violon" meaning "violin" ! Isn't the viola an alto violin like the cello is a bass violin though?
@@DCBfanboy Yes, so if what you're saying is that "alto" is short for "violon alto" in French then yes, calling it an "alto" for short is good. Would it ever be called "violon d'alto? If so, that's how I translate it into English: Violin of alto, or violin of treble. So when people say "nice violin playing" I say thank you, and in my head I complete the phrase "violin" with ..."of alto", rather than yelling "IT'S A DAMN VIOLA!" like a few of my younger students do hahah. Also careful, because there *is* a bass violin which is *not* a cello. It is slightly larger than an alto or tenor viola, held and bowed between the knees like a cello. The thinness of the neck is the same as a viola as well, and the f-holes are about the same size. It is tuned an octave below the treble (standard) violin.
There's not much about it on the internet, but I will post a video on it in a couple of days :) I went to Italy a couple of years ago and bought a large book on a collection of violins, violas, and all the variations! Quite fascinating to see all the different types of instruments that haven't survived in popularity today !
It is not technically an arrangement like we normally know, because Brahms was the person who proposed the viola as an alternative. In the Imslp page for example, the viola part is not in the arrangement section
I: 0:28
II: 8:45
III: 13:56
IV: 18:16
Fantastic!
You can see (and hear) why Amihai Grosz is principal violist of the Berlin Philharmonic. Gorgeous tone and such expressive playing.
My favorite violist!!
Played that first phrase like a badass!
I have corona virus, feel so bad, and this is wonderful pleasure for my soul. This composition is my favourite. ❤️

Pianist, singular. Sorry, typo-prone.
He is such a comsomate musician with a wide range of repertoire...Bravo.
I prefer these sonatas on viola. Brahms adored the viola....as do I. His Op. 91 should be heard more often too!
SERIOUSLY! Op. 91 is one of my favorites! I've even played one of the songs before. It's a wonderful piece to either perform or listen to.
Viola gang

My wishes have been answered.,
Yet they were inspired by the clarinetist Mühlfeld.
Blessed and excited to hear this!
He always gives the most amazing performance..a true comsomite artist. We are so lucky to hear him...a real blessing...David Link

He’s very powerful on the Viola, great performance!!!
Such a joyous performance - and superbly skilled camera work too
Beautiful ! Vielen dank’ Amihai !
Stunning playing. Bravo, bravo- kol hakavod!
christ that dark tone is just gorgeous
Fantastic playing!
Beaux instruments et tres finement interprété !
Beautiful!
Just lovely.
Very relaxing very beatiful
Amazing!
Fabulous!
Bravo ! Great ...but it couldn't be other way when viola is in his hands 👌🤘
Great!!!!
Very well played
精湛的琴藝 超然物外的演奏風格 冰與火的碰撞
Очень приятное исполнение! Спасибо.
Bravo!
At last a really good violist!! Such an expressive instrument with great range
Excellent Like Zukerman
❤❤❤❤
The 2 musicians could pass for brothers! Are they? or cousins maybe?

Sounds great, what instrument is he playing? 17th century??
1570 Gasparo da Salò

Who is the pianist?
Ohad Ben Ari?
Süper
Who plays the piano part?
Is that piano playing itself?
Huh? Is this meant to be an artistic comment?
普段、BPOで弾いているヴィオラ(ダサロ)とは違う楽器のようですね。
😍
Wer ist der Pianist?
I can play this better in my sleep (I'm dreaming)
Esta es una sonata para violín Y piano. No es una sonata para violín con acompañamiento de piano. Digo esto porque no figura el nombre del pianista.
fantastic, I do think the volume of the piano was away too high and the viola too low, the recording, not the exceptional playing by both that is.
This is the way it sounds in the concert hall.
Quasi parfait ! une remarque cependant , les deux musiciens sont trop inexpressifs , pas assez heureux de jouer une telle œuvre .
The violin sounds amazing in this!
Yes incredible violinist, his sound is so deep it almost sounds like a viola ;).

The pianist is not mentioned. Too bad.
Absolutely...it,s just as important..
Not my favorite. But still beautiful
You mean the CLARINET Sonata, right? :)
But gorgeously played by this pair.
I had no idea these were clarinet sonatas until I looked it up on imslp, shows how close the range of clarinet and viola are.
It is not technically an arrangement like we normally know, because Brahms was the person who proposed the viola as an alternative. In the Imslp page for example, the viola part is not in the arrangement section
Amihai Grosz may be a lovely person but appears plainly arrogant.
I'm a lovely arrogant person too
As usual the pianist shows an inability to restrain himself.
Hard to imagine why anyone would say this ...
It’s a sonata, so he’s not just accompaniment ya dingus
