      @@syd7429the runway tunnel is crap. The queue just causes the tunnel to be congested and then closed for the day. Traffic ran smoother with the runway crossing.

    The airport in Visby used to have a railway crossing the runway until the 1960's.
    When it comes to military airports in Sweden they all tend to have reserve runways on the public road network.
    In case of war this is so they can scramble more aircraft faster and and its harder to knock out the airport

      @@Canleaf08 In Sweden it's usually local roads that get widened to 16m for 800m. This is much narrower than those Autobahns or even road bases in Finland.

    There used to be an airport called Stapleton International, that was east of Denver Colorado. Denver International has long since replaced it, but at Stapleton, one of the runways was built on a bridge going over Interstate 70. I'm sure that this was the main factor in them closing down eventually.

      Frankfurt Airport has a taxiway crossing a highway with a bridge, because a runway had been built later, as an extension, on the other side of the highway.

      CDG has two runways and a taxiway crossing one of one of major motorways/autoroutes (A1/A3) into and out of Paris, France;
      AMS is very similar.

    The mainline Railway between Belfast and Derry in Northern Ireland, which is the busiest single track railway in Europe. crosses the very top of RWY 26 at City of Derry Airport. The ATC even have a signal system in the tower to stop any oncoming trains whenever an aircraft is taking off or landing.

    Heathrow has one, between the main terminals and the BA hangers, you have to cross it to get to the main train/bus station (Hatton Cross).. Grandad used to drive up to the gate so we could watch the planes - 5yo me thought seeing a Jumbo Jet about 15ft away was the most incredible thing *ever* (don't get me started on concorde!)

    There allegedly used to be a level crossing at Mariehamn airport in Jomala municipality, Åland, where the main road to and from the west (now landscape road 1; I don't know when the road numbering was implemented) crossed the runway. I believe this arrangement lasted until the new main road (now Hammarlandsvägen) across Möckelö (to the south of the airport) was opened in 1963.
    Now there's a sharp curve in the road directly to the west of the fence around the airport, hinting at the former alignment. Unfortunately a part of the former main road to the east of the airport is now a walk/bicycle road, after a new road to the airport was opened, but the old alignment is easily traceable.

    Unfortunately not, however Humberside Airport is a repair station for aircraft and the AN-225 used to be repaired there before the war the runway has a one way takeoff and landing direction due to a steep hill like Saint Barthelemy and on the other side of the runway was a road. The road is directly perpendicular and next to the runway. They have a crossing there where if a huge plane is taking off, they can close the road

    The old La Romana airport In the Dominican Republic had a level crossing for golf carts on the course that surrounded the airport in the Casa de Campo resort. American Airlines used to serve it with the B-727.
