    As a Madeiran I’ve travelled to Madeira almost every year. Some people saying “horror” clearly don’t know there’s a strategy to land against these types of winds, the pilot did the right thing by going side ways and adjusting at the last minute. Very well done! It’s for this reason I feel safe travelling anywhere :)

      You NEVER land straight on. Its extremely rare for the headwind to be the same direction as the runway perfectly

    • @Feuergraf
      @Feuergraf ปีที่แล้ว +17

      As a pilot I would like to teach something: To approach sideways is not a decision we could make (to approach straight with crosswinds is a decision we could make but that would be stupid and dangerous). The plane automatically turns sideways in crosswinds because the wind force attacks the rudder plane way more than the small bow which causes this phenomenon.

    Ryanair has a lot of short flights and a lot of landings at airports that have windy weather. They get used to keeping elevation until the last second to avoid getting slammed with a down microburst. Then put the aircraft firmly down. Their hard landings are not unsafe just uncomfortable. They land and aggressively commit. In nasty weather this is a safer landing. Bumpy for the passenger and harder on the plane. Makes for good youtube videos.

      Unfortunately this is just BS, I always wondered how people come up with things like this. There is no aggressive commit and keeping the “elevation” because of microburst. Madeira is a difficult airport with lots of wind direction and speed change during descent and it looks like this when you are battling with it.

    I have actually sat in a flight like that and landet in Madeira in October 2000.
    The areoplanes have to land like that because of the wind. There is lots of wind on Madeira quite often. The view from the aeroplane was quite spectacular. At one point I had the impression of crashing on top of the houses and it took my breath away.

I just love their way of doing everything, they are an example, even tho they are a low cost company and their services don’t compare to Emirates or Air France or US Airways 😁

      @@bobjones304 So actually I watched a couple other videos one of which glancingly gave information about the approach and conditions there. I learned a HUGE amount from that, notably that you don't stay within the little alcove just in front of the runway but actually skim the outcrop coastline on the way in. Also, I haven't seen any video of a 787 landing there, only 737s and the much smaller A321neo. I was trying to spin a 787 around the tight alcove if you can imagine. All I could do was bounce the plane all over the tarmac after a near vertical bank turn.

    I remember flying into Madeira years ago for a holiday. You're basically heading directly into a mountain. I've never felt so scared looking out the plane's window during landing in my entire life! Your heart is racing whether you want or nor not, and you're just hoping the pilot knows what he's doing and that all you see behind the window is supposed to look like that. Like crashing into a mountain any minute! 🙈

The airport run way small the plane go up like a yoyo that shit is scary and ur stomach do hurt its a frighting feeling only a good pilot can land a small plane with good flying skills . .look up SABA

    I visited Madeira in the early 1980’s when the runway was considerably shorter, the landing was unforgettable, in a TAP B727 (which was pretty much the largest aircraft type that could land safely at the time), we flew our final approach almost level with the runway, then banked steeply to the right, straightened and touched down with hardly a bump….. It must have been the closest thing to landing on an aircraft carrier. The runway is only a couple of hundred feet above sea level and we utilised virtually the whole length to stop, turned 180o and taxied back to the terminal building…..no room for error I guess…..

    As an legitimate student airline pilot I can say that this landing was totally perfect. There is no blame towards the pilot since with heavy crosswinds there has to be an adjustment to it. Love this! Our airport here has a good long runway, KRRT. I used to go in and out as a passenger more frequently, but the most interesting landing I experienced was on a flight from home to MSP. Those pilots easily handled crosswinds! This time they set the rear gear down at the metro airport with the nose about 20 degrees to port, brought the nose down so we passengers could see the centerline stripe. I was in about the 4th row of seats and could see the pilot using the rudder controls before lowering the nose. So. Smooth.
    The guy across the aisle from me, obviously not from Minnesota, told me afterwards he was "trippin" until all the wheels were down.

    In December 1990 I was on a Britannia Airways 737-200 flying from Manchester to Madeira. It took us about 4/5 attempts to land and we had to re-fuel at Port Santo after a couple of attempts. On the successful attempt we were approaching the runway from the same side of the mountain as this Ryanair. The pilot must have gone for a low approach as I remember us being forced down by a squall and the pilot having to give more power and CLIMB just before we touched down on the runway! The old runway was much shorter than the new one in this video and he had to use everything to slow it down so as to not go off the other end of the runway into the sea below. I think we were close to a disaster that day...

    Some of the bush villages in Alaska have these sorts of runways. There's one where the plane had to bank sharply around a mountain, then immediately straighten out and land. It felt like it was turning on a wingtip and then we were down. There's another that when you take off it's straight off a cliff and you skim the waves for a bit until the plane starts climbing. There are scads of them but those two I remember the most.

Amazing handling of the plane with around a 100 or so passengers in it. The nerve and courage that these pilots have! At 1:11 I would most likely wet my pants and I would blow a farewell to the picture of my wife... These pilots keep their cool and just put the plane on the runway as they normally would do :-) Not my airliner, but still, huge respect to the pilots :-)
