  • A move that stunned Master Peter Svidler while he was analyzing the game in the studio of the Global chess league was 5.Bb5. It was the epic clash between GM Daniil Dubov (2727) and GM Leinier Dominguez Perez (2706) as Chingari Gulf Titans were up against the Ganges Grandmasters. Watch the video to see if Dubov's idea of playing the move helped him win the game.

    5. Bb5 was played as recently as 2021 by Jordan Van Foreest against Wesley So, so it is hardly an off-the-wall idea. After 7. Nc3 that game continued (instead of 7...0-0) 7...d6; 8. 0-0 Bg4; 9. Qd3 0-0 and Wesley eventually won in 55 after Jordan sacced an exchange and a 4-queen position was reached. This game was a repeat of Vavulin-Sargsyan up to 11...Ng6, whereupon Maksim played Bg3 instead of taking the knight resulting in a 50 move draw.

Leinier is very strong, an excellent strategist, he knows a lot, his games are interesting to watch, but the ex-world blitz champion loves time pressure...

I was also surprised by the evaluation, but Dominguez' Rf7 immediately explained it. Without checking with an engine, I guess that Rg2 (threatening Rg6) instead of Nxf6 would have been the correct move. Nf4 also looks interesting.
