Can You Really Drive a Dodge Challenger in the Snow? | RWD Sports Car in the Winter

- hey in this video I talk about my 2017 Dodge Challenger and driving it in the snow. I wanted to show you guys that you can drive a Dodge Challenger a rear wheel drive sports car in the snow just like any mustang GT in the snow or Camaro SS in the snow. I have been driving rear wheel drive vehicles in the snow and winter for the past couple of years and it is possible to have a rear wheel drive vehicle as a daily driver in the snow and ice. driving a rear wheel drive sports car in the snow is okay to do as long as you have snow tires and you have the proper weight distribution over the rear axle / wheels. in this video I hope to shed some light on driving a rear wheel drive sports car in the snow and ice and hopefully this video can help you guys out if you're looking to drive a Dodge Challenger RT or Dodge Challenger scat pack in the snow.

Hey guys I also did a video a few years back in my manual Camaro RS in the snow. Check that one out here!
th-cam.com/video/-idjNl6Grf4/w-d-xo.html
When I was a kid, every car was RWD. They got through winter without any major issues.
Every car rwd 😂
@@lillfullsend6761 Well there were some 4x4's but not full time.
When you were a kid people knew how to drive
When I was born, these were in.
th-cam.com/video/6BVo2xNyjYk/w-d-xo.html
Yea only they had 300less whp and 250 less foot lbs of torque
I totally agree wit everything said...I currently have a rt and an old head said yea jus put some snow tires on that thing and put some sand bags in the truck and you a be ok...my only hang up with driving the challenger in the winter is that the challenger doesn't have window frames so my window gets frozen to the seal and I can't open the door from time to time but actual driving...this guy is spot on
Drove my RT charger for 7 years in the snow and never had a problem just drive like you have sense and you should be good
Good content! Don't forget to undercoat every year, some are 2 or 5 year recoat depending on the product. Absolutely, snow tires are critical in a muscle car in winter driving, or good quality ASRs. My RT Shaker survived for years, and my Scat has done great for 2 years now. There's been no rust, no issues, just drive in ECO Mode....lol
This is exactly what I needed to see. I plan on getting a 2019 Challenger R/T and driving it in the winter. These are the exact conditions I'd be driving in and the areas I'd be in too. I live about 60 miles west of you. Thank you so much for this.
So are you going to get this or the challenger gt (AWD)
acerswift123 r/t by far. GT uses the Pentastar V6. R/T is a V8. I've been driving in the snow for 20+ years. My current route is basically a straight line from home to work. If I really need to go somewhere I'll use wife's AWD vehicle with snow tires.
kingmb so you wouldn’t daily it ? I’m looking to daily it.
acerswift123 absolutely i'd daily drive it. Any doubts I had before were erased by this video. Omegagreed lives about an hour from me and experiences the same weather as i do and what he says applies exactly to my situation also. Basically get snow tires, slow down, and don't stop abruptly.
kingmb ok awesome, because I’m only 24 and I don’t really have the money to own two cars. So I’m trading my 2010 Mazda for the 2017 challenger rt, and just wanted to know if i could be safe with it. My choice is between the rt and the awd, but people keep saying the v6 is underpowered and loses value extremely fast.
Well this was exactly what I needed. I'm from Buffalo too, and was thinking of getting some manner of rwd car with decent power. Glad to hear it's not the craziest idea I've had. Thanks a bunch!
Oh yeah! I drove it all last year in the snow. No issues.
Come to TN and drive in snow. You wont have a chance. Car will be destroyed.
@@ox6466 TN gets barley any snow LMFAOOO. Come to Boston. Then that car will be destroyed
Come to Canada, put skis on the bottom of the car lol
We all know Michigan gets the worst snow
I just moved back to NY with my challenger. Thanks for the info. It is my only daily driver right now
Like many others I grew up with RWD cars in New England and they work fine in the snow with the right tires and as you mentioned weight over the rear tires always helps. Drove a 1983 Corvette that I purchased in 86 and with the exception of low clearance I drove it all winter long and it was fine. You just need to understand the car and yourself and not let your ego get the best of you
Great video…I’m from Buffalo area as well, so everything you went through makes sense. I drive a Ram 1500 now (which I do love), but I have had my eye on a Challenger for a couple years and now thinking about the all year round expectations. Thanks!
As an 80's teen in the STL area, my first vehicle was a rusted out RWD only pickup truck, then a 1980 Pontiac Sunfire (rwd), then a 1978 Pontiac Grand LeMans (rwd), and then a rwd only1986 Chevy S10 pickup. None of those vehicles ever had snow tires either, so it definitely can be done. That being said, those were cheap beater cars and I was a stupid teenager. However, if I owned a nice Challenger today you'd bet your freshly shaven ball-sack I'd have snow tires for the winter. Now freezing rain is a whole other monster no matter what car/tire combo you have.
growing up driving in feet of snow with an open dif fwd makes me laugh when i see an awd suv that cant handle a couple centemeters
Bruh front wheel drive is way easier in snow than a rwd car haha I've never had an issue with my parents 2007 focus, honestly I get way more pucker power in rwd cuz that back end just walks itself into curbs, but it's also more fun haha
Duh
The way how you drive makes difference ( skills), winter tires good to have them, I never have them and never had a problem. I've seen cars with snow tires ending in the ditch.
Peace and love.
Exactly, the best advice to driving in the snow is just not driving like an idiot.
Idk where you live, I live in Quebec city, not having snow tires is illegal, and let me tell you that snow tires make a huge difference
I just got a challenger and i live in Rochester. The plows don’t know how to plow to streets here. Thanks for the tips for the tires and driving tips. Keep it up!
GT?
I'm getting a challenger and live near ROC too! haha.
JUAN nah i cant afford that lol i got a sxt plus
Cole niiiccceeeee maybe we can squad up lol
I’m getting a challenger in 30 days and live in Rochester too well iroundequoit but same thing lol
2015 Challenger Rt All 4 tires are continental extreme contact 275's all around with 200lbs of sand bags in the back 😀 That's the secret! Also don't speed unless u wanna have a nightmare come true lol
Thanks for making this video I live in Rochester ny and I’m buying one tomorrow. Now I feel better
Congrats!
Alex Hare how’s it been
Update?
I glad you made a video about snow. I live in the Chicago area. I really needed a good review.
Got 3.6 SXT - can say it really depends on a driver not a car. What really matters is your feel of car, road and its surface in different conditions, not placement of torque.
So hopefully I’ll be straight in Detroit with all the snow we get luckily I got my Malibu just in case 😂😭
I live in Pennsylvania and this video definitely a big help
As someone who loves to drive, I wouldn't have it any other way then to drive RWD in the snow. A great test of driving skill and also very fun. Kind of sad they are making everything AWD anymore, I want to driver the car, not the car drive me.
Thanks, OmegaGreed! Yesterday (in Chicago) we had our first snowfall since I purchased my 2017 Challenger (used). It snowed about 2-3 inches on the subdivision's road and I WAS going to go out...but all I did was take it for a spin around the block! Why! Because I realized it was the LEAST snow car I've ever owned in my 40+ years of driving!
I fishtailed, slide almost off the street, and couldn't even get back up my driveway hill! I purchased the car with 20 inch, "All Season" tires that perhaps have 50% left on the tread with the car having 17,000 miles on it.
My question to you (or another viewer) is: "Since on a budget, do you think purchasing dedicated snow tires for JUST THE REAR PAIR would be OK? Or do you definitely have to install ALL FOUR as snow tires. It's costs $25 a pop to mount tires...and the ones that are on there are still good...I just live in the wrong climate (here in Chicago). Until I fix that geography, would buying just a pair do 70% of the job? Or not...
I had 2 snow tires on the back for a while and some extra weight in the trunk and that helped out alot. When I went to all 4 snow tires the car handled a lot better overall and it was more predictable.
You give me hope for winter I live in Michigan our winters have been bad lately so I've been thinking of maybe getting a second car so I don't rust out the challenger it being a 18 I kinda want it to last. Love it way more than my trailblazer ss
Ha that's funny I'm from michigan and traded my 04 trailblazer in for the rt as well and was worried about this too
@@craigdefrain5607 smh I had a SS TB hated it in the snow but I had a further drive as well our winters can be brutal
Craig Defrain how has it handled in the snow? I’m from Northern Indiana and I am looking to get this car as my daily driver
I drive my 08 Mercedes E63 rwd 507 hp all round. You need snow tires, about 300lbs of sand bags(70 sand tubes wrapped in plastic bag,you can get at Menards)jug of salt and a small shovel just in case.I have the air ride suspension so I raise it a few inches when it snows.Sometimes when spinning its better to have traction control off because you wont get enough power with it on.Drive very carefully and slower and be very aware of others.
Live in the Fort Erie, Ontario Canada area and drive my RT all the time. A good set of snow tires makes a huge diffence for sure..
Truth!
The right snow tires make all the difference. I had a little '13 Miata that went like a tank in the snow with Blizzaks all the way around & no weights in the truck either. My only worry was the front end plowing in deeper snow since it was fairly low.
I grew up in Hawaii. Sunday was my first time driving my challenger in the snow. No snow tires. I think 🤔 also it was A snow storm and I drove for 7 hours. Wasn’t too bad. Scary but not very bad. Just have to be very slow and careful. 4 hour drive turned into 7. Rear wheel 🤦🏽♀️
That’s good you made it to your destination
Thank you from Canada..I'm upgrading from my Avenger to the Challenger.
Ayyyyyyyyyyeeeeeeeee I’m looking to do the same. 2010. What about your avenger?
all wheel drive vehicles didn't become common until very, very recently. Like the early 2000's recently, so what do people think was driven in the snow before modern cars lmao?
Exactly!
U drive pass my house lol I just brought a 2018 charger rt I see how it ride for the winter ❄️ Iam from Buffalo too
Big smooth me to bro just bought a charger
Buffalo!!!!
Dan Lindemuth buffalo
Any specific snow tires you recommend? Also recommended trunk weight? I just moved to a mountainous area with lots of turns and it snows slightly more than my previous base.
Blizzaks
Sandbags are the go to for weight, but they can make a mess if you’re not careful. Anything heavy will work.
Cool, I’m in Syracuse and seriously thinking about it 😂
You could totally do it
Well I'm pretty damn proud of myself cause I made it home on used tires I bought for my 11 challenger rt last year and I know the tread is getting thin. Today it snowed and had a 35 min turned to hour drive in the snow. I drove slow and had some close calls with it wanting to get sideways. I let off the gas and crept until I made it up some slight inclines in the road. Made it home safe but was a nervous wreck in between. Time to buy some better tires!!
I drove my old 2013 R/T in the snow here in Canada. I had snow tires on. I had no problems at all. I used cheapo Chinese tires too.. think there were called Sailuns or something like that.
Live in western pa so I definitely needed a rewiew the snow is really the only thing that stops me from getting one
Let’s go!!!
Wht i learned in the winter that you gotta not slam on the breaks but like constantly like press on it
How you should drive anyways both times unless pedal to medal your welcome
I live in NY as well and I have a Dodge Challenger as well everyone makes it out to seem like they are completely undriveable in the snow. It sucks not having snow tires because NY weather is all over the place at the moment from high 60's to snow 😂
Good video! I'm in total agreement with you because I drive in New York too. I have winter Continental tires on my '18 RT plus Shaker 6spd with 4p Brembo. All-wheel drive is pointless if you don't have snow tires. I also drive a 996tt.
Great video … in live in Monteal Quebec … we get snow here … getting my 2022 R/T in May … ordered it this month and will be ready in May
My windows lower just a bit when you open and close the door how did you keep your windows from freezing ? so you can get in to warm up also great video thank you.
2 feet of snow is a huge snow storm LOL
Just got my scat pack challenger stuck on a hill in the snow today
Winter tires are a MUST and sandbags in trunk.
Im getting one of these soon. I live in Toronto so the winters are similar to where u are. I am currently driving my dads old Jeep Grand Cherokee which has 4 wheel drive so i am nervous for the switch but based on this video, It seems like i will be ok!
I live in Toronto too. Did you have a good experience this last winter? The only reason I'm asking is because I'm thinking about changing from my 300s AWD to the Challenger R/T
@@victorboechat5370 also in Toronto...what did you find out?!
@@victorboechat5370 i also need to know. I live an hour outside of toronto. Im either going to buy a challenger rt or a tacoma sr5. Im nervous about paying $40k for a car and potentially not being able to drive it during a southwestern ontario winter
Gotta remember there was a time when there was only RWD. Sure they might not have had as much power back then (as commonly anyway) but they didn't have as good of tires or traction control. And they managed just fine. Mostly. Just get some snow tires and practice you'll be fine.
I drove my challenger in 4 inches of snow in Pittsburgh. That with giant hills and idiots everywhere. Its possible.
@hated out yo I live in Pittsburgh and plan on buying a Challenger.. glad i seen this
That all I need to hear 😂. I’m in Chicago making my purchase soon.
Buffalo n.y let's gooo!!! Bills mafia and snow baby !!
My neighbor drove his in 12 inches of snow... He left with a front bumper and two headlights... Came back with one headlight and no bumper cover.
Rochester people present on this video💯
Any car RDW or FWD of course are fully/safely drivable on snowy or icy roads ,with a proper full set of snow tires..also a manual trans is always better for control in such conditions..for much fun driving..!!
It’s no Jeep Wrangler ! Lol
I’m currently looking at a Dodge Challenger R/T scatpack.
I’m switching from a Subaru Wrx Sti, so I’m kinda nervous
Two wheel drive cars with winter tires will stop better than any and car without winter tires.
I bought my son Challenger rt rws. He goes to college in a snow belt . I bought him decent snow tires but my concern are the hilly terrain. The area you in looks pretty flat.
Thanks Man!!! I am moving to Detroit in 2 months and was trying to figure out what car to buy. I am going to buy a Camaro!
What size are your winter tires? my challenger calls for 245/45R20 but I've been told to do with a different size tire, but I don't know if the brakes are compatible with a different size tire and rim?
Did you find out anything about it?
get some good snow tires. Studded tires, or snow chains help even more. and SLOW DOWN!
Snow tires is the number one factor but the other is driving for the conditions. A 4wd or AWD is good for traction but is irrelevant when you start sliding.
Am I the only who has their doors frozen shut? I can drive my challenger in the winter. My problem with this car in the winter is simply that it was not built for these conditions. The doors are near impossible to open, the windows freeze so I can’t properly close the door unless the windows are cleaned off properly. There is a trim on the outside of the door at the bottom of the window that started to come off last winter. Some day I would like to get a Jeep for these harsh NY winters.
Use a credit card between the door seal and the window
Great info. Thank you!
I live in Canada and I think I'll get the SXT In AWD.
Do it. I bought a sxt AWD challenger too here in Alberta. It's awesome
@@LamontBoucherville handles pretty good in the snow i bet! Heavy vehicle too.
@@yolodolo9143 don't know yet. I bought it in may. But I would assume so

My mom turned TC off in her jeep compass cut the wheels and floored it in a ice covered parking lot didn't even slide didnt even have snow tires on
How much weight did you put in the truck, and what did you use?
Is your traction control on or off ?
...yeah... good set of tires...and drive to the conditions... of course.... I'd get another SRT 392 car.... But I think also the 2 Ton weight helps the cars as well, it really plants them I find. Edit: Also some winter wiper blades as well...
I have question can i drive challenger RWD in snow with winter tire ?
Amrit Brar winter tires are the best
I'm more worried about salt and rust.
Frank Branker Fluid Film
Frank Branker just change your rims for winter and not use the fancy one for winter
Good info, thank you
how much weight should I put in the trunk for the best result?
Winter driving is 20% car, 40% tires, and 40% not driving like a moron.
Also, back in the 70's/80's, my dad had a full-size pick-up. He made a big wooden "bed-liner" that he filled with cinder blocks in the winter.
My charger has new tires and it done good on the road but I got stuck in driveway I even have heavy blocks in trunk, The problem is that traction feature, it keeps you from spinning out of a stuck spot, I think you can turn it completely off before startup by holding down button
Is RT a good first car
Not really. I suggest going trough something smaller first and definitely less power. Its not a hard car to drive but you could use some experience first. Visibility is not that great, the power is too much for a beginner, RWD needs experience, and the whole thing is huge. :>
George Varbanov damn is it that hard to adjust to? I have a 2010 Mazda 3 FWD and it’s not fast at all. I want a challenger bad , should I get the v8 or v6?
acerswift123 the V6 does come with an AWD which is good for winter but it’s kind of slow but if you get a V8 which has RWD it harder to drive in winter but you get a nice loud fun car
I got a crown vic as first car, that car is bigger than this one. Just driver slower on a rwd car on winter, period.
Wonder if this could be accomplished with a Pontiac 1982 firebird.
I just got my 2019 challenger, love it amazing fun fell in love. My question though the rims you get that are custom do you need to change them for the winter to prevent corrosion or rust or do they hold well in the winter
Get a separate set of rims for your winter tires. Save your nice rims for the summer. Makes life much easier when it comes to changing for tires for the season, plus if you are using the same set of rims for both sets of tires, the rims will inevitably get damaged from changing the tires on them twice a year.
Just get 8 pairs of the same wheel one for winter one for summer lol
How is it with hills though?
Why not studded tires for winter?
Here in Chicago we know about snow LOL
Tony MTA same
Snow Tires A Must !!!
I see so many ppl in ditches driving 4wd cars in the snow. People just get way too confident.. 4wd doesnt help you brake, probably feel more confident driving faster with it but youre gonna look like a train when u need to stop
Hey does your car have a whine from the engine bay when you cold start your car in really cold weather? Thought I could here it in the video. Mine has a whine when I cold start it wondering your your does the same thing? Usually goes away after 30 seconds.
Yes it did, very slightly only in very cold weather. But yeah it would go away once the car idled down to normal RPM’s.
Great video. Been a bit nervous about putting my R/T+ through this Wisconsin winter but this helps assuage my fears. How much weight did you put in the trunk?
I added maybe around 100lbs or so. That really helped the rear end feel more stable.
I'm guessing sandbags? I'll put 50lbs as close as I can to each wheel then, thanks!
I live in Boston and have blizzaks. I put 4 40 lb bags of feline pine kitty litter in my trunk. My challenger feels like a little tank now lol I didn’t do any of this the past 2 winters and was ok. I did have trouble going up hill and was unable to in 2” of snow without all this so this by year I’ll have a good gauge of how much more leverage adding these two things to my car will give.
How many tires did you change to winter tires? 2 or all 4?
In Wisconsin also; not as concerned about rear weight or my driving or snow tires, but how is ground clearance? Should I be concerned im gonna end up as a plow??
You drive up any mountains?
Do you think it’s because of the weight of your challenger because what I’m looking at is a brz and those are light
Found your video. Hello from Rochester NY
The worse part is having posi track n to get out of them skids is reaching for 4wd or taking out of gear cause rear brakes wont grab the back tires on the first brake press also abs module taps into the brake system n can be annoying when you just need that tire spin to get through or otta something... i used to drive an old 81 monte carlo for over 7yrs in yooper winters had my tools in the trunk was enough weight and had some mean knobby tires on the back for winter time- hell we hit the wellston Michigan fire tower road when i lived down in manistee county- 2ft of snow i kept them tires turning that car just dug and plowed through it. Lol was fun- not 17 anymore so more serious about driving and have purpose when leaving the house when its nasty out now
my 2011 srt is my winter beater
But of course....if experienced driver...snd top notch tires
Upstate NY Aay?
what snow tires did you get for your RT?
Bro what about the all season tires that comes on many challenger models are those good in snow ?
PSN Gamer all seasons are not snow tires. Night and day difference. Get snow tires trust me.
Watching this because I live in Maine and I just bought a dogde Magnum haha. I figure studded tires and some weight in the back should be alright. I've driven trucks through snow storms before and I've rarely ever had to put it in 4wd so I figured it shouldn't be too bad haha
So its not so bad driving a RWD Challenger in the snow? All right then I think ill get that RWD SXT instead of GT to save me some money...
what is the tires you went with ? i will being putting snows on a 2019 challenger RT. 20 in rims. thanks in advance
What about driving when going uphill during snow
Add weight in the trunk they can do it...people drove the old 1970's Challengers in the snow all the time and never complained...You add weight in the trunk,I did on my Challenger SRT and it did great in the snow, not as good as a 4wd but I made it..Cascade Mountain range and Rocky Mountains!
@@mypronouniswtf5559 perfect , I am in Canada so this info helps , thanks again
Thanks! I'm also from the Tonawanda area. How much of a difference do you think the AWD variant of the Challenger would make in these conditions?
I have a friend who bought the AWD charger and he loved it in the snow. I even drove it before on my channel. I wanted the V8, so I went with the RWD instead both are good.
@@OmegaGreedAK47 Awesome, yeah I'm in an AWD Charger right now and handles fine (has the weight to keep me on the road). How about the Challenger?
I have a 300s AWD and didn't have any problems in the Canadian winter (Toronto), even with All Seasons and no extra weight. I'm thinking of buying the Challenger R/T just because I dream about having a V8 but at the same time I question myself if this would be reasonable winter wise.
These videos helped me a bunch to understand that it can drive well if you have proper tires and some weight.
Before anyone comes to me roasting about my lack of winter experience, well, I'm from Brazil and this is my second year living here in Toronto. As you can imagine, Brazilian winters are not well known for the amount of snow we get... lmao
Thank you! I'm going to be moving to about 50 miles South of Buffalo I'm debating selling my SRT 6spd for an awd.
It’s possible to drive it, I’ve seen some people drive corvettes in snow around here lol (probably not the best idea for a corvette as a daily but its been done lol)
What did you use for weight and how much ? 🎬🎞📽🚗🏎
I used basics weighs in a army surplus bag.
yooo the 716 thoooo
What brand are those tires ?
Driving through Tonawanda, eh? 😎
almost all cars were rear wheel drive back in the day and many of them were muscle cars.
