They recommend you drop 2 inches of pitch when changing from aluminum to stainless steel. But I ordered a new stainless steel propeller today. The aluminum was a 14 1/2” X 19 pitch. I was very worried about not dropping to a 14 1/2” X 17 pitch. I took a chance and order a 19 pitch. I heard you say at the end of your video that you easily could of switched from aluminum to stainless steel and keep the same pitch! Thanks!

Let me know how much more top end you ended up with and did your RPM's drop any

You must check your sink anodes you get more corrosion on your stern drive, because of stainless steel prop, my Mercruiser 425 HO stainless steel for blades prop good performance

Helpful video. I just got a new 50hp suzuki 4 stroke replacing a Johnson 50hp 2 stroke with air leak issues. The johnson got up on plane with 2 people in the boat no problem but the suzuki struggles with two people. I have a hydrofoil on the back for both motors. It😩 made a difference on the Johnson but not sure if it's helping with the Suzuki. Any help you can offer? I haven't changed props but I'm thinking of trying a stainless prop to see if I get more lift. Let me know if you have any suggestions.

What is the pitch of your prop and what size boat and any idea on the weight of it.

@@Michaelsbackyardmarina Prop is 11 & 1/2 by 15 Pitch. The Boat is a Logic/Triumph 15ft. The internet says the boat is 640 lbs. The suzuki motor I put on weighs slightly more than the Johnson by maybe 25lbs if i recall right. I am getting 30 mph with previous motor as well as the suzuki but just want to get up on plane with another person easier with the suzuki if possible. Let me know what you think sir. Keep up the good work.

Did you ever get it figured out? Have you tried raising or lowering your motor? Did you get the correct Suzuki 50? They sell a DF50A and a DF50AV and the AV is heavier and deeper geared for heavy boats.
I just got a 50hp Suzuki (DF50A) on my 17’ aluminum duck hunting boat. And before I put a jack plate on I was running 37mph with a 11”X 16 pitch prop. Now when I put the jack plate (with 6” set back) I’m running a 11.4” x 15 pitch prop and getting 37-38mph on dead water and I only lose 1mph when I add a second person, and the boat gets on plane very quickly. The 16 pitch wouldn’t let me rev out enough, and with the 15 I can hit the revlimiter when im alone, and the 15 is getting me much better fuel economy.

Nice video, but I never use stainless. Buddy of mine used stainless, hit a rock and it tore up the foot gears. Aluminum would break off, so I always use aluminum and carry a spare.

I ran aluminum all last year (42 fishing trips) and all the encounters with objects were my fault and it was all low speed so stainless or aluminum would have made no difference. I will let the summer tell me how it goes. I plan on having a back up lower unit for my alpha 1 anyway.

I only run my i/o at wot at 10percent of the time I like having the alum prop when I go the the sandbars if I had a stainless prop I wouldn’t be going there 20 years ago when stainless started to get popular only offshore boats used them because they where more efficient and did have higher top end due to less flex I believe the most I read I talked about was. About 5-10 increase in speed
I have one on my 15hp Johnson and goes 28 mph

If you're looking for more speed a 40 hp motor won't do the job no matter what prop is installed

very insightful video. i have a question. I have a 40hp Suzuki with a aluminum 14" pitch with a 11.5 diameter prop. im looking to switch to the Michigan Wheel Apollo stainless 14" pitch and 10-3/8 diameter prop. Basically the same prop except 7/8" smaller diameter. like you. im at 30mph. do you think in theory that i would gain in speed, if so, how much? thank you in advance

    • @Michaelsbackyardmarina
      @Michaelsbackyardmarina  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

My math says you are giving up an 1 1/8" on the diameter. You should pick up at least 2 miles per hour if your motor can get to the same rpm it does with the aluminum prop.

@@Michaelsbackyardmarina i think your right. Thats what i figured also, from 30mph to 32mph, i hoping a little more. i also had a damaged skeg, it had been welded poorly, i knot of weld bead that im sure caused cavitation in the path of the prop. id be amazed if it all adds up to 34mph,lol. thank you for the feed back, i also subscribed to your channel.

The stainless may be cupped ? You told not of the al. D.I.a. ? Hydro foils. Get rid of it? Possible some water. 200 lbs. In your flotation? You hit shit with the stainless. Lower unit gear strips?

you want a bit more top end speed then sharpen the skeg of the outdrive and the front of it... youl be surprised how much better the performance is with sharp entry points...

Actually if you would have put a 13 pitch aluminum solas it would be a better support for your application

@@Michaelsbackyardmarina SS prop is 2x the price (,give or take) of aluminum equivalent. you gain maybe 2 mph, 3 if you start changing pitch. Unless you race for money SS props are unnecessary upgrade. WORD.

An al.prop would gave similar performance. Cheaper. Lighter. Easy on gears as he is inclined to hit shit?
