This came out in 1971. This song is timeless. It makes me sad to think about all of the music we never got to hear John Lennon create. He was taken way too soon. Such a wonderful soul, he was. RIP John.

@Name That wouldn't work because you can never convince the entirety of humanity to believe in christ or any single religion. That's not hoe beliefs work. So what we should preach is tolerance and universal, unconditional peace.

In interviews Lennon said that he didn't write Imagine as a wish for a different and better world. He wrote it as a directive to actually imagine that place. He realized that everything ever created by humans - from buildings to airplanes to war - existed as thought and imagination first. He was directing us to actively imagine a better world and to actually build it. One Love.

We so need John Lennon now. The man who gunned him down took something so special out fo the world, a voice that should not have been quieted. I do not think I will ever stop missing him or crying when I think about his death. Julian should have had the time to reunite with his dad as an adult. Sean should have grown up with his dad. Yoko should have grown old with her husband and we, the people of the world should still have him writing his beautiful songs, his quirky songs, his hard-hitting songs, his art that never failed to paint a picture in my mind and make me think about life in some way.

1971 Imagine - Play The Youngblood’s - Get Together (Lyrics)
Love is but a song we sing
    Fear's the way we die
You can make the mountains ring
    Or make the angels cry
Though the bird is on the wing
And you may not know why
    Come on, people now
    Smile on your brother
    Everybody get together
Try to love one another right now
Some may come and some may go
    He will surely pass
When the one that left us here
    Returns for us at last
We are but a moment's sunlight
    Fading in the grass
    Come on, people now
    Smile on your brother
    Everybody get together
Try to love one another right now
    Come on, people now
    Smile on your brother
    Everybody get together
Try to love one another right now
    Come on, people now
    Smile on your brother
    Everybody get together
Try to love one another right now
If you hear the song I sing
    You will understand, listen
You hold the key to love and fear
    All in your trembling hand
Just one key unlocks them both
    It's there at your command
    Come on, people now
    Smile on your brother
    Everybody get together
Try to love one another right now
    Come on, people now
    Smile on your brother
    Everybody get together
Try to love one another right now
I said come on, people now
    Smile on your brother
    Everybody get together
Try to love one another right now
    Right now
    Right now

"There was a fantastic universal sense that whatever we were doing was right, that we were winning. And that, I think, was the handle - that sense of inevitable victory over the forces of Old and Evil. Not in any mean or military sense; we didn’t need that. Our energy would simply prevail. There was no point in fighting - on our side or theirs. We had all the momentum; we were riding the crest of a high and beautiful wave. So now, less than five years later, you can go up on a steep hill in Las Vegas and look West, and with the right kind of eyes you can almost see the high-water mark - that place where the wave finally broke and rolled back."

But the John Lennon song I chose was not "Imagine" but Mary Chapin Carpenter's cover of "Grow Old With Me" th-cam.com/video/5FeNz9UHjAs/w-d-xo.html . Lennon obviously, ultimately got "religion" on this one, at least, (God Bless Our Love), recording his unfinished version right before he was assassinated.

@@curtisthomas2670 - Ridiculous. He was out of the spotlight for at least 5 years prior to him being killed. Deinstitutionalism had occurred in many of the major states in 1979 due to the movie, “One Flew Over The Cuckoos Nest.” Many asylums began to release patients and shut their doors permanently in some parts of the country due to multiple lawsuits for extreme and bad treatment of the patients. This caused a massive homeless situation in 1980, and states that thought they would not want to give up the asylums suddenly found that they saved a lot of money by not taking care of all the mentally deficient. Prior 1979 Mr Chapman would have been confined to an asylum. But do gooders demanded the government shut down the asylums which they did under duress only to learn later how much money it saved them. Now even if you are a danger to yourself or others they lock you up for 72 hours give you some chill out drugs and kick you out the back door. So if you want to say the government had a hand in killing Lennon you would be partially right, but Chapman has to take the lions portion of the blame even if he was deranged at the time. The movers and the shakers in government were pretty busy with the Iran hostage crisis and the Cold War where Russia was sending troops to Afghanistan as well as the Contra Sandinista fiasco in El Salvador San Salvador staging in Panama. As far as I am aware of John Lennon made no public speeches about any of those things prior to his death. He did say a few things about China on occasion but, Kissinger had normalized a lot things between China and the US by 1978. A lot of people forget that another deranged idiot shot Reagan in 1981. Whether we want to admit it or not the asylums were keeping the homeless away from the rest of us, and providing room and board so they did not have to sleep on the streets, defecate on the sidewalk, self medicate with drugs and alcohol and constantly bother people for money. I wish John were still here because I loved some of his music. The movie Yesterday keeping him alive was wonderful.

"Imagine" was released in October of 1971. If you're looking for other uplifting songs from the past that still speak to the present, here are a few... "Up On The Roof" by The Drifters, "Everyday People" by Sly and the Family Stone, "Every Kinda People" by Robert Palmer, "We Can Work It Out" by The Beatles and/or Stevie Wonder, "Stoned Love" by The Supremes, and "Many Rivers To Cross" by Jimmy Cliff.

At least John had the ba..s to put the words down. He wasn't silly, he knew that it was unlikely to happen but he also knew that the only way you change is by saying these sorts of things. He knew that the "bed-in's" for peace weren't going to change the world but he had the ba..s to put himself out there and say it. He knew he would be heard.
He wasn't afraid to fall on his face if he believed enough. RIP John. This year he's as long dead as he was alive. That's a thought.
