He's not an expert at carry techniques or tactical shooting techniques (though 3-gun has started to bring some tactical shooting to competition shooting). He's a competition shooter. He doesn't practice shooting in less-than-ideal conditions (such as those required in self defense shooting, using cover, shooting off-hand, shooting from awkward positions/stances...
The goal of competition training is to increase the speed and accuracy of the shooter in ideal circumstances.

Most of the insecurities about carrying with a round in the chamber, comes from an inexperience. Once upon a time I also felt a bit nervous. But that was my first year I ever owned a semi auto handgun 20 years ago. My advice to anybody that doesn't feel safe doing so, spend some more time with your pistol. Dry fire and live fire. Clean it often. Just spend time with it and the fear will go away.

Another thing is to understand the mechanical aspects of what you carry. I carry a 1911 cocked, locked and ready to rock because I understand the design of the 1911. Glock, no way, never owned one and seen too many videos of people shooting themselves, if I could get my hands on one to study the internals I might change my mind.

That’s exactly what I do. When I buy a new pistol, I go from the store directly to shooting it. Then directly home to TH-cam everything I can about it and spend the next couple of weeks dry-firing and playing with it. After that I am ready to carry it loaded.

As a law enforcement officer I can verify that you are absolutely correct that in a high stress shoot situation the hit rate is way lower in the majority of the cases.. My advice to most people who ask me is do whatever makes you the most comfortable. If they just don't want to carry hot, at least they have the option to try to defend themselves if the need arises. I personally carry hot, but I use an IWB holster and my draw is very unlikely to cause an accidental discharge. Most importantly, whichever way you decide to carry, PRACTICE and become very familiar with location on the body, draw and whichever other techniques you may need to practice in order to use the tools at hand to defend yourself!! Muscle memory!!

    • @root7205
      @root7205 2 ปีที่แล้ว

@@deltadragon2335 Another thing to consider is the shield in .40 will have much more muzzle rise than the 9mm. You can generally get quicker follow up shots with the 9mm over the .40 due to less muzzle rise with the 9mm. I have seen more kills with the 9mm than the .40. Of course which ever way you decide to go, just practice and get comfortable with muzzle rise and carry location!!

On the 3rd month I started carrying with one in the pipe and now I feel 100%safer now. Having it in the chamber is a real confidence booster. Just get a holster that has a trigger guard that completely covers the trigger. Kydex no cloth or neoprene.

@bad bad mc bad i always teach women to carry a revolver. simply because most of the ladies i teach are older and don't have the hand strength to rack a slide or even load a mag. a .38 revolver like a Chief Special or that size and type is generally perfect for them. i generally do a spring job on them to make them work better. i lost my Chief to my Wife years a go and she is very proficient with it and i wouldn't want to be on the business end of a mad woman with one with some .38 HP ammo in it. in a fight an auto pressed up hard against your assailant can take the firearm out of battery not so with a revolver. a revolver pressed up against someone hard just makes a larger wound channel. if you're going to carry a firearm on an empty cylinder or barrel. IMO you should just go to the hardware store and buy a hammer to carry. it's way cheaper and doesn't need ammo and won't jam and it's just as effective.

Treat the gun like its loaded and its a great way to get comfortable with the logistics of carrying a firearm and staying clear of the trigger. Once that is comfortable, Carry with one in the chamber forever and always. I've noticed people can have a mental block about carrying loaded, its a good way to get past that.

When I first got my CCDW I carried cold for the first couple of months, I wanted to make absolutely sure that no negligent discharges would occur as I took the time to drill drawing and firing from IWB concealment. After I realized I never failed to keep my booger picker off the boom switch I decided to start carrying hot.
I would encourage that same practice for everyone who is starting out.
Since I suspect a few people will be here that are not quite sure about carrying a firearm for self defense and might have not learned all the acronyms yet here are the definitions of the two I used: CCDW is shorthand for Concealed Carry of a Deadly Weapon permit and IWB is short for Inside the WaistBand holster, which is a holster that keeps your gun between you and your pants.

My concern about a loaded chamber on many guns would be a small child getting a hold of the gun and pulling the trigger. A child younger than eight could easily pull a five pound striker fired trigger but likely could not rack the slide to load it. Another situation would be if someone saw your gun especially in a hip or back position and grabbed it away from you and tried to shoot you. With the empty chamber the gun will not fire and would give you the chance to grab it back. My preferred method would be a chambered round in a striker fired pistol with the safety on. You can still operate the gun with one hand. I never found the safety to slow me down while rabbit hunting.

I've watched hundreds of real life gun fight situations, caught on video by security cameras or dash cams or body cams, and very few of them did not have a period of time sufficient for a defender to draw and load a round to defend themselves. If someone is actually shooting at you before you draw your gun, that half second or so might make a difference. However, in nearly every video I've seen, there are chances for a defender to get their gun drawn and into action while the perp is distracted collecting their loot or watching someone else or even showing their gun and then putting it away so they have both hands free.
I doubt there are any reliable statistics, but my guess is there have been far more people shot accidentally because a round was in the chamber than have been killed because they couldn't get a round chambered and fired in time.
Just to be clear, I'm talking about people who are just average law-abiding civilians, not people involved in policing or other endeavors where they are much more likely to encounter an armed assailant.

Exactly. If your are attacked unexpectedly from close range, you’ll be dead no matter how you carry. Where I live we had a highly trained police officer accidentally shoot two different people on two separate occasions. Statistically, you are way safer, and everyone around you is too, if you carry on an empty chamber.

From a long-time LEO - there is a reason cops miss so much, and it’s not what most people think (that cops can’t shoot). Many cannot shoot great, but most can - some very well in fact. Two of my coworkers found out the bad guy had a gun only after they were shot by the suspect (two different incidents) because action ALWAYS beats reaction. Bad guy drawing almost always equates to bad guy shooting first. Plus, bad guys move quickly (unlike your static paper targets) while shooting because they don’t care to get shot. Your paper target or steel target is totally OK with it. Equating hits on a static range to gunfights is about as good as predicting a boxer’s performance because he punches a heavy bag well. He’s not fighting a heavy bag - we’re not out fighting a static steel or paper target. It’s a damned site harder shooting someone accurately who is attacking you (statistically in low light) - especially when you’ve been shot - and nobody told you the fight was starting. BTW - great video as always. You’re the man, Jerry.

The other thing to remember is most people don't know they are being attacked until the person is on them. In this situation most people put one hand out to keep the attacker away, and then draw their weapon. This means you will only have one hand free while your other hand is most likely trying to keep your attacker at bay. I have seen MANY self defense situations where this is exactly what happens and thankfully most people had one in the chamber. I also have seen one video of a police officer who was off duty and carrying his gun without one in the chamber when someone tried to rob him. He drew his weapon forgetting the chamber was empty and it resulted in his death.

However, as a note of something to further increase safety, I think it is considered safer to insert the firearm back into a pocket holster with the pocket holster removed from the pocket, then inserting the holstered firearm back into the pocket. This concept is similar to a more exaggerated show of clearing the cover garment before reinserting into the regular ccw holster, reducing risk of the trigger snagging on anything. I'd like to bring up a very important point when it comes to defending yourself with a firearm. Situational awareness is probably more important than every other metric combined. It's highly unlikely that someone is going to jump out of a bush and attack you instantly in broad daylight. Intelligent use of the 5-30+ seconds you will probably have leading up to a self-defense scenario is likely more important than what you're carrying, how you're carrying, etc. Be prepared once those spidey senses start tingling, but also start avoiding the bad situation as soon as those senses tingle. If avoidance is not an option or isn't working, then you'll be ready to defend yourself or your family/friends with you.

He notices movement behind him. Split second and a punk with a gun appears. By that time he instantly turns around and shoots the fucker dead with a handgun that was in his coat's pocket. If he had to rack, he would be dead and his family would be raped/dead. It would also give more time to the attacker to figure out that he has a gun and shoot right away.

I personally prefer to carry with an empty chamber and maintain a mindset of drawing at distance rather than in close quarters. If your attacker has closed the distance and you begin to draw, there's a very high probability that you've just made a dangerous situation that much more dangerous -- you'll be fighting for both your gun and your life. Don't give him a live trigger. I recommend watching John Lovell's video with Craig Douglas on the realities of retention in a defensive situation -- th-cam.com/video/La56KNz9FFA/w-d-xo.html

As you have such excellent, recognized and wide ranging experience, maybe you could share with us the best semi auto pistols for loaded chamber carry (e.g., best engineered safety mechanisms for carry with a chambered round)? How messed up is your attention span if you have time to find this video on youtube but don't have 7 minutes to watch it even though you're interested in it?

If you don't carry with a holster you are asking for an ND into your leg.

I carried hot for 10 years in Law Enforcement. Never had to use it thankfully but came close a couple of times. Violence comes fast.

No matter what procedure people want to follow, the most powerful thing that a person can do is practice. I know a young lady that goes to the shooting range EVERY weekend. Rain, snow or shine she is there practicing. She doesn't practice quick draw or any fancy move but honestly, she practices more than the local sheriffs deputies do so I think she might have an edge on them. Practice like you fight is advice that I try to head in everything I do. Practice is so very powerful and important.

Equally as important as training, would be situational awareness, if you're oblivious or pre occupied it doesnt wht or how you carry, I have a cleared chamber semi auto pistol and I have my revolver on the draw side, always treat it like its loaded. Great vid than u sir. Love and respect from seattle
