@@EasyGreekVideos I would really LOVE videos about Greek literature, the most famous poets and writers and so on.
I would also like politics and history but I understand that this would be narrowing your public a lot I guess and would also often be quite controversial. For example talking about the historical figure Nikos Zachariadis, or Velouchiotis and so on could be very interesting. Like an interview asking people what they think about them.

@@EasyGreekVideos Well, why not start with the music in Greece, and I mean the music that ordinary people listen to: pop, rock, metal, hip-hop, folk, and of course, rembetika! Which are the important bands and artists? What is the history of each genre in Greece? Where do you go in Athens (and elsewhere i Greece) if you want to listen to a specific kind of music?
You could interview the musicians themselves and let them tell us about the music they play. I have more ideas, but I save them for another time.

The reason I left Greece is that my hard-working wage was less than my grandfather's pension. With such an aged population, the country decided to prioritize it's most important voters (pensioners) over the youth. Additionally, I cannot get over that the political parties that bankrupted us in the first place are still ruling the country instead of every single one of them being in prison. My 2 cents.

I left Greece to do my Master's degree in another EU country. Now that I've spent 1 year in a significantly more functional and advanced EU country, I am really trying to find a reason to go back to Greece after I graduate, other than nice weather and cuisine.
I have great ambitions and dream big, I want a nice job related to my field of study, I want to be able to run my own business without risking it all, I want to travel the world, and I've tried to do that in Greece but it was very, very hard. I feel betrayed by the greek government, and also by the people voting for or supporting all this corruption. It really breaks my heart because I love my home country deeply, but I really won't waste my youth trying to make things better on my own.
Or... maybe I did find a reason to return: seeing people rise up, resisting the corrupt system, and fighting against the injustices we face, together. Like the brothers and sisters we are. To save our beautiful country, our identity. United and with no fear.

There is an assimilation process going on......Everything is focused for the tourism.

First, I worked in the tourism industry in the summer, picking olives in the winter, not earning much but still very happy to be here. Thank you for covering this very sad but important topic (the fact that at the same time it makes me practice my Greek listening comprehension is a bonus, but this time not the main point). The pain you feel about the situation can be seen on your face throughout the video. Greece is a wonderful country, and not just for its amazing landscape, history and great food - I have always found the people there to be incredibly welcoming, genuinely warm and friendly, at a level I haven´t found elsewhere. Every time I arrive there I feel immediately at home away from home. At the same time I have to wonder how the average Greek can survive, every time I see the e.g. the prices in the supermarket which are about the same as in my home country Austria, or the cost of electricity, whereas the average salary is just a fraction. At times I feel guilty at being one of "those foreign tourists" which are as much part of the problem (indirectly driving up prices for everyone) as they are seen as part of the solution (bringing in much-needed money)...

I left Greece after finishing school and spent more than 20 years studying and working in 5 countries. Now at 40+, I returned and set up my business here because I wanted to have a better day-to-day quality of life (this may be surprising to many, but it's true) and raise my daughter as Greek rather than an expat child. Going to a different country will not necessarily improve your life. People tend to focus only on the negative characteristics of Greece (which we all know), and do not seem to understand that there is no paradise (in terms of work and life) out there waiting for them. In fact, leaving your country to go abroad is the beginning of a new major challenge rather than a solution to all problems. Life is different for everyone, so my experience may not be relevant to all. My humble advice to young people (if I can give any) is this. Try to improve yourself and develop skills whether you are in Greece or elsewhere. If you have an opportunity elsewhere that can help you improve as a person and professional, you should definitely consider it! However, have a vision about what you really want in your life in the long term. Best of luck to all my Greeks at home and abroad!

thank you for this comment. people tend to think that going abroad will automatically make their lives better. while it may be true for the most part, there is still the possibility that you end up more or less on the same boat. for example, in other EU countries there are higher wages, but i personally know two examples where it was impossible for them to pay the enormous rent and their parents had to contribute for years until they got a more decent wage. not everything is black and white.

If the government was really concerned they would’ve tackled the enormous amount of corruption and never allowed short term rentals, golden visas, lack of competition and the sale of the country to the highest bidders to go unchecked. It needs to invest in it’s people and diversify its economy and not rely so much from tourism if it is going to thrive.

Governments love inflation because when money has a lower value, debts decrease.
In the end governments make inflation to steal money from the citizens to pay the debts.
But not just states have debts, most business people have them as well. Thus they also profit from inflation.

The sheer level of corruption within the government is staggering and The Bureaucracy is another level. Most people i know feel they are doing everything they can
to hinder you making a living
The tax system is beyond crazy, the cost of living is high and wages are very low. Locals can't find accomodation due to the Airbnb crisis and rents are extortionate compared to wages. Food prices are crazy. Greece is not a functioning EU country it is better referred to as a 3rd world country. Which is beyond sad as the people of this beautiful country deserve much more. Our family immigrated to the UK shortly after the birth of our son. It became clear to us that the best years of our lives were behind us, and if we wanted our son to have opportunities, we would need to start over-to build a life that could offer him the same quality of life we once had in the 1980s. My heart aches daily as I think about my family and my wife’s family, and when I hear my son fondly recalling his grandfather’s house in Greece-the Easter lamb preparations and the cherished family gatherings. But for young professionals, or even those just trying to lead a normal life, Greece is no longer sustainable. The only sector that thrives is tourism, and even that remains mostly unregulated, with few exceptions.
Over time, I’ve learned to separate my emotions from reality and the hard facts. It took nearly a decade, but I now earn five times what I did when working full-time in Greece. I’ve managed to buy a home, albeit with a mortgage, own a car, have life insurance, and access affordable healthcare. But more than that, I finally feel-at least to some extent-that I have control over my own life. I realized early on that, unlike in Greece, the choices I make in the UK have a direct impact on the outcome. They aren’t dictated by divine intervention, personal connections, luck, or family tradition. Here, I’m presented with options, and I have the luxury of choosing between them and observing the results. If I make the wrong decision, I can always choose differently next time.
As for my son, I see in him the traits passed down through generations, and I hope that in a more supportive and positive environment, he’ll have the freedom to make his own choices and succeed. I now recognize that the Greece I grew up in-the experiences that shaped me-were products of a specific time and place, not enduring life lessons. The people I grew up with, including my family, now seem so different from the way I perceived them back then. I consider myself fortunate to have been given the chance to start over and create a "second life" within my lifetime.
Despite my deep love for Greece, I can clearly see that we, as Greeks, are far behind in how our modern society functions. We lack the maturity and knowledge to organize ourselves effectively and face the challenges of modern governance. Although our ancestors laid the foundations of critical thinking, it seems we’ve lost all connection to that heritage, showing little desire to pursue the same virtues. Instead, we often define ourselves as victims-of fate, of higher powers, of circumstances.
But now I understand that it’s not the Greek individual who is defeated. Every Greek I know who has moved abroad has succeeded. It’s Greece as a state-as a country, and as a system founded by European allies after the revolution of 1821-that has failed. Greece has become a place where ambition and creativity suffocate. Only those who are either resigned to their fate or impossibly resilient can survive there now. And I am neither of those.

If you have a different understanding what Greek means, then you will have tough time accepting reality. I speak in English so the majority of the viewers can understand me with very little effort. Greece may be shrinking now, but it is shrinking at significantly lower rates than Bulgaria (about which I know quite a bit)... There are more people from abroad deciding to come to Greece permanently than those who leave. So nothing is really lost until you accept that "Greek" means everyone who accepts the Greek ways and not have a Greek bloodline as old as the continent... which is none of us. Greeks are the one nation that do not abandon but rather leave to survive. If Greece is fine again, they will return. I tried living abroad but I couldn't. My life is in Greece. I gave 2 beautiful sons to this country and will give more if finances allowed it. I have done my duty to Greece. Greeks shouldn't be so negative about Greece. Two of my Greek cousins already left Greece for good and stayed abroad in the country where they studied. Greece loses their brightest minds and the government doesn't seem to be able to handle the problem.
Plus the corruption and bureaucracy make legal matters a nightmare. I could tell you stories... that would leave you shaking your head in disbelief.
However, we do have similar problems in Germany. Not necessarily with emmigration but also with inflation, increasing number of natural desasters like floods and rising costs of living/ rent/ electricity...
And the root of this evil is basically the endless greed of a few but none the less very influential people who have the means to bend rules/ laws into their favor. A good read into this topic would be "Robert Reich - Saving Capitalism". There's also a documentary about it on Netflix, I believe.

Although you have big market, because you have many tourists and its three times bigger than my country, but prices in Supermarket are like 30-40% higher than in my country, so how it works, it should be lower in theory. Most people also have huge property loans with the average kotetsi costing $1,000,000. Do whatever conversion you need to do but for the average person every country is a struggle.

A new wave of Greek diaspora...

  • @bennyfrohna7675
    @bennyfrohna7675 วันที่ผ่านมา +15

i'm Greek diaspora living on Turtle Island ("North America"), a third generation immigrant (my grandmother was born in Greece), and i want to take our family back to Greece and live there, if we can, and honestly, this *is* why. my parents don't understand (so i may not go with family after all); they list bad things happening in Greece and use those bad things as evidence for why i should not go, but. i was never expecting Heaven on Earth, to tell you the truth. i was never expecting Eden. i expect that things will be hard, especially with the work i want to do; farming, permaculture. i expect that things will be so hard they may seem impossible. but i am still willing to try, because that is who i am. a lot of our culture was assimilated - so taken away, and i find that to be the saddest thing of all. throughout the world, a lot of people are facing these struggles - financial, environmental, genocidal, even - all at once. it may seem as though the world is going to shit. that's how it seems to me, sometimes, but if the world is going to shit, i would rather be home while it does. heh, "home;" i know i didn't grow up in Greece, but i've heard my grandmother's stories, and i've been there, and i've swam in the Mediterranean, and it was such an alien experience and yet so warmly familiar. i've never forgotten.
i want to be there. i want to be there, and see if i can farm enough to produce things, not only food but materials, things people use, i want to have a community that does with me, and i want to give it away for free & be reciprocated that same way. something other than capitalism, something very different from privatization. i want to encourage people to realize that is another way, other than leaving, to have a good life. and yes, the world may still go to shit. i may not be able to farm anything, my visions may perish in fire or flood, but, as i said, because it's who i am, i have to try.
    so i will.
(if only immigration weren't such a bureaucratic, pain-staking process, but i'll go through with it if it means i'll have a chance.)

Certainly the lower than Germany or Switzerland salaries are a reason.
Mainly, if you ask me, is that Greeks for decades now are raised not to love their country. This is the "progressive" way in Greece - forget the few nationalists that make a lot of noise. Any feelings or actions in support to the Greek nation is considered fascist or ultra-nationalist.
Take Germany for example. It was destroyed in 2nd World War but the Germans didn't leave. They stayed in Germany and fixed it.
Greece's economy was much worst at the 1950s but less people immigrated at that period.

    Στη τελικη, ακόμα και με διπλάσιους (όχι σπάνια και τριπλασιους) μισθούς από την Ελλάδα, με ένα μέλλον σαφώς πιο ασφαλές οικονομικά, πάντα νιώθω ότι θα υπάρχει ένα κενό μέσα μου, ένα αναπάντητο ερώτημα για το αν θα μπορούσα να τα καταφέρω στην Ελλάδα. Και αν μπορώ να γίνω μάρτυρας μιας αργής μοντερνοποιησης ενός πεισματάρη λαού από κοντά; Θα το έχανα αυτό το έργο;

Ojalá xD

When I was on Syros this year, I went into a pharmacy. They asked me 1) what I paid for paracetemol in Australia and then 2) what the average salary was in Australia. The answer to the paracetemol was a lot lower (you can buy it in the supermarket and the VAT is much lower - 24% versus 10% and 2) the average salary in much higher. So the girl said, right I am emigrating to Australia - 2 of her friends already had. I think that a lot of Greece's problems stem from joining the Euro (with fraudulent data). Also you pay very high sales tax. I am surprised that more Greeks aren't interested in going back to the Drachma - but this may be legally impossible now. One other observation. In Australia, all the gyms have 24 hour gym access. In Greece, the two gyms I joined did not have 24 hour access. In fact they didn't even have gym cards. The obvious lower cost for the gym of lower staffing, and allowing people and shift workers to go to the gym at a time that suits them is not achieved. Perhaps it is seen as some kind of false job creation scheme? Anyway I see this as a microcosm of structural problems in the Greek economy. But I will say this - it is for the Greeks to decide. There are so many things that I love about Greece, that I never complain about the gym access or that I can get run over at a zebra crossing. It all goes together. But I thought it was OK for a foreigner to answer here, as you have opened this up to us. I love Greece and the people of Greece!

I'm a Greek American. My family is from Mani, and when he retired, my father moved back and still lives there. I visit every year and, in my opinion, I have experiened Greece more as a local than as a tourist. I've never been to an island or done any of the touristy things Greece is famous for because to me, that's not the real Greece. I'm not rich, and I don't pretend to know what the answer to even one, nevermind all of the issues you've discussed.
What's blantantly obvious to me though is that the Greek government is laser focused on taking in the "easy money" of tourism, only minimally using it to help the Greek people, and banking on the people not realizing that THEY not the government have all the leverage here. How? Because if the Greeks who actually work in the tourist industry stop doing so--even for only one week--tourism would come to a halt. Unfortunately though, from my experience, Greeks fight more with each other than they do stick together. And in my humble opinion, until THAT changes, nothing else will.

Overtourism is bad but I don't think it's the main issue, because in many other countries with much fewer tourists they are experiencing the same problem: unaffordable housing, high energy costs and ever increasing grocery prices. Demographic/economic changes are there too, namely urbanisation. All the young want to live in big cities for better work opportunities. In the countryside there's nothing to do. And there isn't enough housing for the whole country in just a few cities where suddenly the entire nation wants to live. That's also the reason why real estate prices are where they are. etc. etc. it's a very complex issue for sure....but heartbreaking to hear things are this bad in Greece and so many people decide to leave.

Thank you for the excellent video. The problem with Greece is the bureaucracy that makes doing business hard. Even buying a home to live in is hard for spouses of Greek citizens and the process to buy a home to live in as a retiree takes months even with cash in hand to buy it without a loan. If the government streamlined the process to do everything business would soar because Greece has an excellent workforce in terms of education and value for the cost of labor. I can say that as a retired person that has a permission to be here legally fromt he government and who is spending money fixing properties for me to live in and enjoy as a retiree. I full agree with limiting part time rentals and making homes more affordable. However, Greece is too focused on the big cities, Greece must establish incentives for factories and businesses to establish productive business in the towns and villages. That way the homes are there for young couples to buy and raise children in a much healthier village life than the crazy cities. Cities are chaos worldwide because they have been allowed to grow out of control. Even China has a problem and they can dictate solutions. Another problem is the educational system is not career focused. I taught college before I retired to Greece and I worked not only on teaching my students but on getting them jobs and I focused on teaching skills that employers needed. Our college had regular meetings with employers to make sure that our students meet there needs. I see nothing like that happening in Greece. I worked in industry, the government, and the military before becoming a professor and professors that have real world experience is really what is needed. Theory only scratches the surface of what any career entails.

Greece is a cash economy where tax avoidance is king. It’s not surprising that the government has no money to invest in infrastructure, public services, safety net etc.
Furthermore the tax that is collected is subjected to the greediness of politicians who dip their hands into the pot. Again no wonder there is no money for services, education, health care etc. It’s a vicious cycle that keeps the country in a constant state of economic strife - citizens are suffering and the government is unable to help (except themselves).

Greece is a banana republic now more than ever, along with the rest of Europe these days. I should know being a half guatemalan and chilean, hispanic Canadian. We are banana republic in Canada too, Canada is USA’s laptop but at least we have natural resources, i don't think Europe has any and it has de industrialized to serve its US masters. It’s sad to see the dire straits of Greece, I saw first hand the struggle of the working class last summer. I know its modern history how much is suffered for so long in wars, military juntas, oligarchs that sold out its people etc. It would be great if Greece would have true autonomy and democracy for its people, go back for the drachma, leave the EU and NATO, along with the rest of Eastern Europe, re industrialize, and join the east and global south, which is the future. Eastern Europe had always been considered 2nd class or lesser, not even Europe. The root of the problem is the west, especially being a slave to the US and its oligarchy, they are the ones who control the EU and are cannibalizing it for its own gain. I fear a fascist uprising, blaming migrants which would have never arrived in the first place if it were not for the imperialist wars like in Libya and Syria.

I feel bad for my people living here and everyone must do what's right for themselves but I have to warn you the grass is not greener on the other side.
I'm a Greek born and raised in Canada and from what I can see the system we live under has created the same circumstances for all of us. The average cost for a home in Vancouver is over $1,000,000, average rent is $3,000 and I believe the average salary is somewhere around $65,000 with heavy taxes.
Most people are drowning in debt here and many people ha e had their banks change their amortization dates to over 40 years so they don't lose their homes. It's a nightmare in the western world today because we are ruled by evil traitors.
When I retire I plan on retiring in Greece because I can't afford to in Canada.
It's a terrible situation for young Greeks but things are really tough everywhere.

I've lived in Greece for the past 10 years. I've made it my home because I love living here more than anywhere else BUT it's true that the country is going in the wrong direction.
Here are a few of my comments on the most important problems the country is facing:
    - the Greek state: as much as it may be hard to accept, the Greek state is the biggest problem. Dimitris talks about "free" stuff like the healthcare system or education but the reality is that nothing that requires the labour of another person is free, you pay for it one way or another. We lose 25% of our salary to the state before we even see the money which means that you work 3 months in a year purely to pay your income tax and your mandatory IKA contributions. In exchange, you receive 3rd world country level of healthcare, education, infrastructure, etc. With the outcome being so bad that children need to go to private frontisitria just so that they can make up for the shortcomings of the educational system in order to pass to the next grade. Also, because the public healthcare system is so bad, many people (those who can afford) choose to pay for private healthcare, unfortunately, you cannot opt out of paying for the public services.
If you add all other forms of taxes (such as the VAT), you'll see what a typical worker works around HALF A YEAR to pay to the state. Imagine how much better our lives would be if the state didn't steal this money from us.
    - the ECB which issues a debt-based fiat money which is designed to constantly lose value (which is evident in the constantly rising prices). This is a world-wide phenomenon. The banking cartel is siphoning wealth off of everyone who uses its poverty tokens as their money. Just google wtfhappenedin1971 to see what happens to society when an inflationary currency is used as money. My advice to anyone reading this is to study bitcoin as it's probably the only alternative monetary system that uses a currency with a fixed supply.

Since then I have been here a lot. At one point I lived here almost six months. People here have changed. They don't believe in the future anymore.
But the thing is, this happens all over Europe. My so called "home country" does the exact same thing to it's people too. I am lucky to have a job there steady enough to put some money a side so when I retire I can live somewhere outside my home country. I can never afford to retire and stay where I was born.
