I was alive & saw ABBA win the Eurovision…man I’m old :/. They were helped out immensely when they released a ‘greatest hits’ album called “ABBA Gold”.
The unique thing about them as songwriters is even though they were HUGE Beatles fans (especially as musicians/song writers, which was rare back then) instead of blues & soul, their core musical roots was Nordic, the oom pah pah’s & accordians type of music, which you hear the influences of in their originals, and maybe what turns off many “true” rock fans.
The guitar player, Bjorn, was their main lyricist & knew that to break out of their European bubble, they had to sing in English (they entered the contest w/ a Swedish lyric version of Waterloo, but in the finals, sang the English version). They even followed the Beatles’ lead by foregoing live performances eventually and became studio masters which honed the “AbbA sound”
They were also pioneers of music videos, along with the Beatles, well before MTV. Videos were their way to promote their music while they stayed in studio where they were happiest.
They had a manager in the US. At the time the American way of promoting was to tour constantly. ABBA’s US manager pleaded for them to tour the US, as they’d already conquered Europe & most of the world except the US. Their US manager told ABBA’s manager, “the only way you can get a #1 in the US is to tour, tour, tour. ABBA’s manager countered, YOU get us a #1 THEN we’ll tour the US. That #1 ABBA song was “Dancing Queen”. They ended up touring the US twice.
Yes,Lennon/McCartney was Benny's/Bjorn's granded inspiration for them to start the songwriting partnership that resulted their road to modern pop music. But Benny Andersson was also a huge fan of Brian Wilson's The Beach Boys amongst others. In general their influencies were diverse and all melted in their music pot. From Schlaher and Scandi folk and French chansons + Italian melodies to rock 'n roll and Katerina Valente(Also one of Benny's unexpected faves)not to mention Benny's adoration for classical music.
BEST ⭐ POP ⭐ BAND ⭐ EVER!
Never was a mayor success in USA, but they were in the rest of the world, especially in Europe, Australia, Japan and Latin America.
As happens to most... ABBA also evolved over the years...
Maybe you like ABBA's works more in their last period (before their break in 1982)...
Songs like 'The winner takes it all' or 'The visitors'.
{ The curly girl (Frida❤) was her birthday (79), last November 15th }
Take care ✌️
Greetings ❤ from Chile 🇨🇱🤗👍
Abba is in Europeans' DNA. In the 70s we danced and sang to abba and even now I see kids doing the same. I was listening to their voulez vous album the same time as hemispheres!!! And I appreciated both. All my rock head band mates and friends loved abba, and i cant tell you why. They are awsome 🤘
More Abba please 💙💜💙💜💙💜💙
Pretty much the masters of harmonies, incredibly catchy hooks, and lyrics that many many people identify with. One of my favorite bands, alongside Yes, Floyd, Talking Heads, Bowie, and many more “serious” bands.
Their music is way more diverse than you may believe. Try “Eagle,” “Arrival, “Chiquitita,” and “Fernando,” among many many more.
Check out their live shows from Australia and London from the late 70s. Brilliant amazing music ❤
'EAGLE"ultimate version of about 6 min.is a kinda Floyd-ish ABBA prog-pop rock anthem.'The Name of the Game","Knowing me Knowing You" to add a couple more.
@@alexioverdo5225Totally brilliant tracks
It's not for you, Justin. It's just for EVERYBODY else. Seriously though, there are some songs that you would love in their catalogue.
sid vicious, curt corbain, and some other famous real rockers really respected ABBA. it's polished but very complex underneath and their cataloge is very versatile
David Grohl,Bono,Corey Taylor,Bill Corgan, Richie Blackmoore,Ian Gillan (just to add a few more in the list)
John Lennon also said that ABBA's SOS was one of the best pop songs ever written.
Fun Fact: in the year ABBA won Eurovision for Sweden with this song, Olivia Newton-John represented the United Kingdom finishing in fourth place.
I love ABBA. The song The Name Of The Game is such a gorgeous composition and recording. A lot of folk start off hating ABBA or just know a couple of songs, but there's a hell of a lot of genuinely wonderful songs in the ABBA back catalogue and often times you won't find many better examples of songwriting & recording than on those 1974-1981 ABBA albums. My favourite ABBA album is 1976's 'Arrival'. The title track is an instrumental, and is absolutely beautiful.
There is something very special about ABBA and those few years that come along when everything just clicks into place.
ABBA's music is quintessential wedding reception fare. It's eminently danceable and crosses generations (especially thanks to film and later stage as well).
It gives me nostalgia for the 70's, notwithstanding the fact that I wasn't even yet in kindergarten when they started.
PS - I always liked Build Me Up Buttercup too.
Quintessential wedding fare i love it lol and am well versed! Thats why I know the Abba that I know from weddings... and Build Me Up Buttercup lol
It's FINE. it's okay holy shit...Well they were only a worldwide phenomenon, not as much in the states though in spite of Dancing Queen .. shaped the pop scene in they time... ABBA Mania were a thing back then and we have wanted a reunion, and we got it with their ABBAtars in 2021..
This song was specifically written for Eurovision, the very definition of kitsch. It's nowhere near their best song, but it is the song that started it all. The comparison to "See My Baby Jive" is apposite, I'd never noticed it before, but I can definitely hear that influence now.
ABBA... Rabbit hole... You'll surprised with some of their albums and songs... For me "The Album" and "The Visitors" are their masterpieces, songs like The Name of The Game, Eagle, The Visitors, When All Is Said and Done, Knowing Me Knowing You, The Winner Takes it All... Take a chance om ABBA!!!
...'Lay All Your Love On Me'... 😊
I unashamedly say that ABBA are the greatest pop band ever!!!! Justin, you would probably find some of their songs cool.....anc some cringing 😊
Eurovision was and is EVEN more so now,a Cheesy, crappy, competition that should never be allowed😅 but ABBA broke that mode with real pop music.
ABBA fun fact: when they released Waterloo, none of them spoke English! Not even as a second language, they learned to sing all their songs phonically.
As poppy as pop since this was the Eurovision entry that set them on the road to fame and many fantastic songs.
I still enjoy this, but it's not an ABBA song I would choose to listen to. The further they went in their career, the darker and more sophisticated their writing became. Personally I would recommend The Name of the Game and The Day Before You Came.
It's like a sad snail. Playing music
ABBA is like METAL - definitely NOT for everyone! That’s probably why there are a LOT of Metal covers of ABBA songs, especially “Gimme! Gimme! Gimme!” and “Lay All Your Love On Me”. 🤘
Don't forget IMO ABBA's 'heaviest' tracks "Hey, Hey Helen" & "Tiger"
@@HaleysTusk Or even heavier ,'Watch Out".Kinda glam metal. This was the hardest they ever get.
@@HaleysTuskTiger is a must-listen
Wow. Not a band that I would have expected as a request from your viewership 🧐
Yes, very brave of Thomas! 😁
Oh! So he already does know some other ABBA songs, and much better ones than 'Waterloo', too! 😀 They were my very first favourite group when I was 7 or 8, in the late 70's, and those 3 songs he mentioned actually are in my Top5 of ABBA songs (the remaining 2 being 'The Name Of The Game' and 'Lay All Your Love On Me') 😀
I also loved Boney M around that time, and I still like both groups a lot today; Well-crafted Pop music! 🤩
Have a great week everyone!
😊👍🎵☀️
Boney M were and are brilliant. Same period for me too. I play their greatest hits regularly 😊
@mattleppard1964 - I've always liked their 'Nightflight To Venus' album in particular 🤩 I'd actually heard _their_ 'Heart Of Gold' version long before Neil Young's original and had thought it was theirs! 😅
By the way, didn't I chat with you also on a different channel only moments ago?! 😄
@@mightyV444 Another channel? In the words of the Beach Boys, I get around…
@mattleppard1964 - Good song, too! 😄👍
You should definitely react to their song 'Eagle'. But make sure NOT to watch the shortened official video. The long album version that lasts almost six minutes is a must. The best video you will find at the channel WeisseKatze1965.
AGREE!
@@alexioverdo5225 😁
Given your reputation as a massive cinephile, I feel obliged to also suggest that you and Camila watch Murial's Wedding at some point.
😂
Only ABBA I know is the stuff from mama Mia which I guess was all abba music. My son played in the pit for it last year and he said it is one of the hardest shows for musicals in high school. Especially bass. There was some really cool songs but this music is not for me. lol.
Try some of their hardests deep cuts.'Watch Out"/"I am a Marionette"(David Grohl with Ghost did a cover to this dark gem)/,"Hole in your soul",/"Rock Me"/"Hey Hey Helen" or even the majestic prog 'Eagle" the full version of over 5 min.
it was glam fashion nowadays it's thrift store fashion
Now you gotta do "My Waterloo" by Walter Becker. Whole different vibe.
@@iluvj50 lol

I completely understand "not for me". Don't bother doing ABBA. If they are not for you, and you made that clear. Do not just try and tap into their popularity. Seems desperate, and clearly a ploy.
