      Hi Alberto! Self-drilling screws are not good for wood. They tend to chew up the wood and then the shallow threads don’t have much to bite into.

    Hi, we need to hang a tarp over the inside of our screens on our back porch. When it rains the rain comes in through the screens and floods the back porch. With hurricane season we want to be able to put it up before a storm if need be. What do you recommend? It is aluminum. We are thinking about using the self drilling ones but I would hate to make holes in the porch. We tried command hooks and they just fell dow. Thanks so much!

    That's not a self-tapping screw. Self tapping screws have a feature that cuts it's own threads. That screw you are calling a self tapping screw is not a self tapping screw. Self tapping screws have a knife edge groove cut up through the starting threads that actually cut the threads as it's driven onto the steel.

    We’re converting an outside deck into an inside addition to our house. Angle iron was used to make a roof and sides, along with adding windows, doors, etc. After having the insulation added, we’d like to put up cedar or pine board walls (sounds better than I can describe). My question to you is: do I use self-drilling screws to attach 2x4’s (or maybe 1x4’s) for the interior framing in the room or do I pre-drill holes in the wood and angle iron and use self-tapping screws? I saw where you told someone that the self tapping screws would chew up the wood. Really need some good advice! I am not a tradesperson, but trying to do it ourselves. I know it may not come out looking like it’s top-notch, but I’d like to give it a shot and save a “little” money, if and where possible. Thank you in advance for any advice you can give me.

    • @ZachFields
      @ZachFields  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @tinksfawn08
      Short answer: self drilling.
      Long answer: Of the two types of screws, self-drilling usually works best for thicker metal, which the angle iron likely is. I would recommend pre-drilling through the wood using a drill bit a few sizes smaller than your screws.

    Do you know anything about max thickness of the self-tapping screws?
    I have seen Self-drilling screws (DIN 7504) rated for at maximum thickness of 3 mm, but i have only seen the specification "thin sheetmetal" for Self-tapping (DIN7976).
    I am going to using through a 1.5mm steel plate and do not know if threads of my DIN7976 get crushed due to them being stainless steel or i should use DIN7504, which i can not find in stainless sheel (unless i buy a pack of 200).

    Can i use the self drilling on sheet metal and wood post for a fence??

    • @ZachFields
      @ZachFields  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You can use a self-driller to secure wood to metal but not metal to wood. The drill tip on the end bores too big of a hole for the threads to have anything to grip to. Also, the threads are too fine to work well in wood.

      T-Posts are indeed made of a hard steel. I don't know of a self-drilling screw that would claim to go through. It'd be worth a try, but not likely. The U-Posts that are made of a stamped mild steel should take a self-drilling screw without issue.

    Zach. what type of screw to use for holding fly screen onto aluminium window frame? and do i need to use impact drill ( or normal drill) with it please?

    • @ZachFields
      @ZachFields  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      A small self-drilling screw would work well going into an aluminum window frame. If you’re securing mesh screen though, it should really be sandwiched between two pieces of metal. Just using screws, even with washers, is very likely to twist and distort the screen. I’d use another thin piece of aluminum and screw through all three layers. Aluminum is really easy to strip out, so use a small cordless drill with the clutch set to a very light setting.
