The 499 has stood the test of time. I have been using mine since the late seventies. I have both Camillus and Ontario versions. Mine have been on hikes, camping and canoe trips and in the dunked in the water more times than I can count. I have more dirt time with these knives than any other knife I’ve owned. As you know back in the day this was the knife to have. Gets a bad rap but I understand with the newer generations and their are so many choices. I have many good knives but I like to get out my 499 every now and then. Reminds me of when I was younger. Thanks for the video.

I was in commo in an artillery battery during the Gulf War. I have no idea why, but I was issued one of these when we deployed. It was a good, handy little all-purpose knife though.

A little tip: 40 years ago, I applied Armor-All to the stacked leather handle on my KaBar USMC knife. It looks like polished wood, and is as sturdy as when I bought it. The handle has remained pristine.

Something to remember is that this knife was meant to be used with the issue utility pocket knife aka Demo knife.

Old A.F. A/C mechanic here as well. I have an ASEK version. It's also a good knife. Thanks for sharing the historical aspect of the knife in question. Great videos.

Good review. I have an Ontario made in 1990 and the false edge runs straight to the tip, not concave like yours. I don’t know when they changed or if mine is just a one-off. The tip can break, my son dropped his on a deck and the tip broke off about 1/4” but we easily reshaped the tip with a file. I love having a silicon carbide sharpening stone in the pocket of the sheath. Having a knife in the outdoors and not having something to sharpening it with greatly reduces the knife’s usefulness. Yes, if you find the right rock you can sharpen the blade, but those rocks are very hard or next to impossible to find. Also, many of the newer designs have sheaths made of glass reinforced plastic, which will dull the edge of your blade when you sheath and un-sheath the blade. Mora and Glock do not use glass fiber in their sheaths for that reason. Also, the sheet metal protection on the sheath will keep the blade from cutting through the sheath and hurting you if for some reason you should fall on the sheathed knife. And having a pommel you can hammer nails with and crack hard nuts and bones is another plus. I think these are worth more than their going price.

Looks like a knife that would certainly work and as history has shown it has , but Currently there are much better knives out there at the same price point with better build quality that are geared for the outdoors. Thanks for the great vid and keep making sharp things fun and enjoyable.

I have two of these. One was a gift from a retired Gunnery Sergeant who had it in Korea and Vietnam. I took it to Afghanistan. The other was from a Marine on my crew on my third tour.... we went for a ride you could say. But, it has my callsign and the platoons nickname engraved on it. I love the way they feel, but i cant bring myself to put any work on them these days. The 1st one for its history and the second for the sentiment.

I used to have one when I was younger, didn’t really know what it was , thought it was some cheep Kbar imitation so I never treated it with the respect it deserved

Great video review. I’ve seen other videos that discuss and point out features of this knife but I would rather see how it actually handles some real world use. I bought this knife in 1977 when I was 12 at a local hardware store and always liked it. Thanks for the video !

Thanks for doing this series of videos. I enjoy the content. I have carried one of these to the field and on deployments, but never really put it to much of a test. I'll have to get out to the woods and try it out.

As you said, maybe not a knife you would choose. But, a GREAT knife if it was the only tool in your vest when you survived the crash.

It absolutely was never designed to "cut through an aircraft fuselage." That saw will barely cut through gutter aluminum, and the original document makes no mention of it. Also, aircraft have numerous hatches, ramps, and doors, and fighter aircraft have ejection seats. It is a knife, that was designed to be a knife.

Lol I know. I try not to stage things to be perfect. Whatever happens is at least real even if I don't look good. Plus I don't feel like filming it over lol.

It shows the rest of us that it’s not always the first try, that gets success.

I carried one of those knives in South Viet Nam, it broke on me during a pretty serious fight. So much for that.
Now a days in my vehicle survival kit I have more than one knife because I have more than one task. And knives get lost or broken or whatever.
    More than one.

Cool gloves do you have any recommendations on gloves I was hoping to get some that were hard knuckle tips ?

    • @CommonCentsOutdoorsman
      @CommonCentsOutdoorsman  ปีที่แล้ว +1

I actually buy whatever cheap gloves I find but have had good success with Wells Lamont from Walmart. A step up would be Mechanix or maybe carhartt which both have hard knuckle models. These are the cheaper synthetic Walmart Hyper Tough brand but they have held well and still going strong.

Oh... choose leather if playing with fire. These synthetics melted a bit.
