World's finest hot air fan

- This, in my humble opinion, is one of the finest, if not the finest, hot air engine fans ever manufactured. It was machined with great precision and runs quieter than a sewing machine, even after over 100 years. Note that there is no detectable runout of the flywheel rim. The manufacturer, Hubertus Raab of Zeitz, Germany, also made the hot air fans sold in Asia by Carl Jost (seen in several of my videos). This fan, however, does not have cooling fins and was apparently made for the European market. It was offered as model no. 1425 by retailers Dingeldey & Werres of Berlin in 1909-10. Unlike the vast majority of Jost fans, this model used a more efficient beta-type stirling engine design; only the earliest belt-driven Jost fans used a similar engine.

I love these fans. Had a chance to buy one cheap 35 years ago and did not. Now one in even bad condition can sell for over $1000 US! Thanks for this video!

I’m really impressed how it still kept running with out electricity and without heat lamp
It continues to function with the residual heat and thanks to the weight of the flywheel. Truly a magnificent piece of history and engineering.

That fan is just amazing and the only I have ever seen running or for that matter the only one I have ever seen except in pictures. I collect hot air fans and your statement is so correct, "World's finest hot air fan". That fan runs so much smoother, quieter, and even longer after the heat source is removed. . . than any of my 7 hot air fans. What an amazing fan and wonderful restoration. Your fan is a work of art.

I have seen another such Stirling Fan on TH-cam but don't remember where. If this was driven by a Manson engine the fan would slow down immediately, might start up faster too..

These are SO BEAUTIFUL! I'm hoping to RE-INVENT the wheel and chase these stirling-like designs. Out of curiosity, anybody know how to REMOVE the tapping sounds that go with these engines?
This is the most impressive sterling engine I have ever seen! Is there any blueprints in existence that shows the dimensioning or a breakdown of how this is made I’m a tool maker, precision machinist by trade, and also an extreme hobbyist I would love to remanufacture one of these.
I'm sorry but there are no blueprints or drawings that I am aware of and unfortunately I am no longer its owner.
How do you make fan with hot air would like to do this in garage to warm air up with a fan so whole garage gets warm.

I'm sorry I don't know of any plans available. There are certainly many other stirling engine plans around. This was a commercial product rather than a kit.
You know, with all the custom castings, and linkages, this must have been a fan that was mass produced in quantity. I wonder where they all went. What a treasure! Thanks for posting.
Yes, mass produced but probably in small quantities for the European market. Few survivors today, although the same maker produced the "Jost" hot air fans, many thousands of which were sold in India. Original Jost fans are now also rare, but many more have survived compared to his model.
if anything I do think that if the exact dimensions of the parts and or the original designs where easier to find, a lot of machinists would love to make their own!

Is there no retainer on the bottom of the cage? Saw it vibrating quite hard after the lamp was removed.
I'm not sure. The cage was missing and had to be made based on a single catalog drawing. I'm not aware of any other surviving examples.
+riderericsson interesting, it only vibrated for a moment so it may have not had one! It's astonishing though, beautiful fan and a true treasure if you have one.

It's a hot air or stirling engine. It works by expanding and contracting air acting on an internal piston.
