I'm not a luthier by any means, but being a strings player, I've done a little reading into what makes my instrument "do the thing".... and tone-wood. Certain woods vibrate better hence producing better sound than others. For strings, spruce (or cedar for more economical instruments) is ideal. The sides and backs are usually done with hardwoods (maple, mahogany, and similar tend to be the more popular choices, so the softer side of hardwoods)
This is so cool! I want to play the Greek lyre, and I’m asking for one for Christmas because I have no crafting talent (it’s okay, it’s for Apollo, not Hephaestus). The one you made is so beautiful!

Sadly he is unable to do projects like this at the moment because he suffered from a Stroke caused by an aneurism.. I am hoping he will recover enough to someday get back to building musical instruments like this again.. I am sharing this with him to lift his spirits..

Many pictures of lyres are from the 19th century. They are more a decorative thing, not a source for an actual instrument. The historical lyres often were much bigger (may be exept the Cologne Lyre) I have build some different lyres, and yes, longer strings and a second hole (for a soundbox) will improve the sound dramatically. If you plan to build a second one, I can give you a few hints. Some would make the build much easier.
