I had this quote as a placeholder for months in the frame I selected for my Master's degree certificate while struggling through the mental and physical exhaustion of writing my Master's thesis. I hung it right over my work desk at home, so that I could read it every time I was out of energy to go on, which was several times a day. It helped me push a little further, and further, and further... Sick (having battled depression for years at this point on top of struggling with being the first in my family to study), tired, and broken, but still fighting. It took every little piece of my spirit to fight this battle to the end, and I did. Now, the certificate is on top of the quote, but I still know it's there. The two belong together, since I won't forget, what helped me gain it.
I had to read it at a funeral. It felt like saying the story of my life and the response that was required from me at that time.. all with a man who lived it so truly in front of me in a casket and his photo looking at me.. all my trauma that was so raw at the time coming to the surface, all of a sudden and unexpectedly.. hardest thing I ever had to read publicly 🥹
Wow this edit is insane. Only a few edits and deep voice can do justice to Kipling's poem i remember Jocko reading it on one of the podcast. This one one hits it out of the park
While at college, I was having a discussion with my teacher telling her that I considered the quality of the poems in the textbook from previous centuries to be poor. I brought three poems to this very nice teacher with a doctorate; "If", "The Patriot's Password" and "The Present Crisis". She said that she had never read any of them. No wonder people today think that societal ideals have improved if the selection of literature they are presented from the past is so lacking.
Yes I put that in my journal of quotes and personal writings Ive been putting together for the past year or so. Wish I heard it sooner. Or wish I’d listened if I did.
I had this on my desk in work....when I had a "proper" job. I come from a poor area of my city, grew up without a lot of money, went to a school where only one person went to university at 18. I worked up to a management job where I was dealing with CEO s and top management of huge financial institutions in the UK. I often felt I didn't belong or shouldn't be there. These words helped. I didn't struggle speaking to anyone, or making decisions, or telling the truth....this last one didn't help my career, but I have honour and know I didn't break it. I left on my terms and set up a business in a different field, retired a year ago at 55 and will always be financially secure, have my honour and am (quietly) proud of what I have done...no one except God and the tax man knows how much I have in the bank
If you quit pretending you are a warrior and admit the fact you went of the Green Zone once you're entire time in country, you can get some respect from people who don't think you're a 'hero' just for having your Budweiser.

Had this in my stateroom for an entire deployment. Kept me grounded.
My Dad used to read this poem to me all the time I have it in my office now.

My grandmother wrote this poem in a card that she gave me at my highschool graduation. It has always stuck with me. Kipling was a great writer.
I'll be making this into a poster and listening to this video a few thousand times.
My grandfather chose this poem to be read at his funeral 🥲
Your Grandfather seemed a genuine human !

Yes, the file is a special tool, that sharpens the others.
Oh I've always loved "If" by Rudyard Kipling! Well read!
One of the best ever written… Well done, Mr. Kipling (and Jocko, of course). 👏🏼
This edit goes super hard
I beg you with tears in my eyes to put this on Spotify!!

Jocko did a podcast about a year ago where he breaks down every line of the poem. Awesome listen.
Did not know. Will look for it. Thanks!

Outstanding recitation sir. Thank you. This is getting sent to my son.
Legit.
My namesake, Rudyard Kipling! One of my favorite poems. Thank You for sharing it and thank you for being you!!
Get after it.
Invictus is another great poem along these same lines. Both have been a great influence on my life.
Knew this was Kipling immediately, such a stand out voice

My Dad's favorite poem....
Thank you for this presentation.
I first heard this poem shortly after my son was born. I immediately bought it on canvas and put it on his wall.

I hear you on telling the truth not helping your career. These places breathe hypocrisy. It really stings but for me integrity comes first.
Magnificent 🔥👌
Best rendition of "If" I've heard.
We agree.
Sounds about right.
