  • Here I test out this great paint line from Mr. Hobby, the Aqueous line up.
These are a hybrid acrylic paint like Tamiya. They're a solvent based acrylic paint. These are a great quality paint, they lay down nice and they are super durable. They come in a ton of colors and they are priced right.

This is my favorite paint since I paint in my office and the kids pop in from time to time even with the booth I really don't like spraying g lacquers even though I love the way they spray and finish. So this paint is the next best thing a hybrid acrylic that Is almost as tough as the Mr hobby lacquer. I too use the leveling thinner it's just lays down so well with it. Another great thing about this line is it's the line they use for the gunpla painting guide when it say h2 white there talking about aqueous white and it makes mixing to get the correct gunpla colors alot easier. Great video brotha keep doing the gunpla gods work lol.

It's May the 4th, so May the 4th be with you!
A lot of the kits I'm starting are Bandai (Macross and Star Wars). Because Bandai Color codes with Mr Color numbers (Usually the H coded Aqueous) I'm really glad to see this test. I would say about 40% of the time the Mr Color 'C' and the Aqueous 'H' have the same number. I wish that were true on them all. I chose to invest in the Mr. Color 'C' colors. I bought two bottles to try them out because you seemed to love them. After trying them and having a pretty straight forward 1:1 thinning ratio I was sold. I really wish Mr. Hobby sold a complete set or at least a large set for persons just starting out. I also notice I have less tip dry with the Mr Color.
I didn't have a flow improver for lacquer paints so I mixed up a a 60:40 of Leveling Thinner and Retarder and just put 2 drops of that in, spray about 20% out and then add my paint.
I'm wondering if you do any window tint on your kits? I though about trying to mix Alclad Candy Orange and Candy Cobalt Blue to get a slight brown and doing a thin coat on the inside of the windows. I'll probably order some this week and get some clear spoons from the dollar store and try it out but open to suggestions from anyone.
That Metallic Blue is dead on for WR Blue Pearl(Subaru WRX STI Blue). It's funny because it's a better match than the Mr Color 02. The reason it's funny because the Subaru color code for WR Blue is 02C. Mr. Color 02 isn't a pearl but my guess is that that Aqueous 88 is just a pearlized 02. I checked and none of Subaru's other color codes match up so just a coincidence.
Also if anyone knows where to get a kit of the Subaru Crosstrek in the U.S. for a decent price I would appreciate knowing. I think there was a kit of the first gen Crosstrek just called Subaru Crossover but not sure.

Great video as always. I've been using Aqueous since I started since it has the exact color equivalents to the lacquers in most of the Bandai kit instructions and the color range is huge. Unfortunately I’ve noticed the same thing about the Mr Color paints and the Aqueous colors that they don’t have an equal number of colors in each color. I wish that they would make each color in both of their lines so anyone could use a lacquer or a acrylic paint for the colors that they would want to use.

@Barbatos Rex. Rex, since you have tried so many paints I am wondering what would you say are the best (or your favorite) paints to use on car models? I am just starting out and have purchased a number of kits, Tamiya, Fujimi, Italeri, etc. Most kits recommend their own paints. Should I just do that or would I be missing out because, eg, Mr. Color would not be included on kit lists. FYI I will be using Zero Paints for the primary colors (as I am mainly doing F1 and Le Mans cars) so I am primarily interested in the paints to use for the non-body smaller parts, eg. engine parts, etc., however your thoughts on paints for the full body would be appreciated as well.
BTW thank you I have watched so many of your videos and purchased some items based on your recommendations, such as my PS-289 which I love.
Can you also do a video on mini spray guns such as the Iwata LPH50 or LPH80?
    Thanks in advance.

My favorite paint overall is the Mr Color line up. I love how Tamiya airbrushes but I'm not crazy about how they brush on. Gaia is also a favorite as they are close in formula to Mr paints. Enamels brush on great. Depending on where you live you have different choices of enamels such as Testors, Humbrol and Revell. I love paint so I ha e almost every brand on hand. I just started testing SMS and MRP and so far both of those are excellent. For my car bodies I use Splash and real auto paint made for actual cars. It's a urethane. I can't get Gravity or Zero paints here in the US without jumping thru a few hoops but I would love to try some

Be careful if you follow the advice to use leveling thinner.
It will work to thin the paint. But if you want to paint on top of another Aqueous layer, you risk crazing. I learnt this from thinning Tamiya paints with Mr Hobby Leveling Thinner. Everyone talks about how it works great, no one mentions the second layer. Had to sand down my 114th Apollo Saturn V checker pattern

@RaNmA5886 I have been using these paints for over a year now. I usually can go 5 minutes or so between coats and it's dry in another 15. Just to be safe, I usually wait at least a couple of hours (if I'm in a hurry) or overnight before I move to the next step (panel lining, decals, topcoat, etc.) These paints are really like voodoo magic...I don't know how Mr. Hobby does it. They spray and clean up like a lacquer but have minimal smell. And after a few days of curing, they are bulletproof. Also, I spray them at 18psi. Thinning them varies...dark to medium hues I thin 1:1 and lighter colors (including clears) are thinned 1:1.5. I always thin with 91% isopropyl alcohol and add 1ml of Mr. Retarder for every 10ml of paint.

Hey Barbatos, do these have the "tip dry" problem that a lot of acrylics have? It's why I hate even messing with acrylics. If they ever make acrylics that give you the lacquer experience I'll be on that like gravy on rice.
I might still pick some of these up for brush painting. I live in Louisiana which isn't always suitable for airbrushing (high humidity) and I don't have the space to airbrush indoors right now. These look awesome for that purpose.

    • @quality8133
      @quality8133 3 ปีที่แล้ว

Your pressure is okay. You might be painting too far away from the surface so your piants dried mid air. Or you might be pointing your airbrush directly on to the surface.
A good indicator for smooth finish is a thin reflective layer of paint when you finish painting.

The colours are desaturated and splochy and the cheap price really shows , descent nail polish ranging anywhere between 3--5 bucks a bottle. Really great results, thins well and applies nice and great coverage . For all my tests I used lacquer thinner in a 1-1 ratio. It's great when you want some really rich mettalic niche colours.
