Who is your favourite companion in the fallout games, and what is your favourite companion mod?
Scotchmo is the only companion you'll ever need
I suppose my favorite companion in New Vegas would be Lily. As for the Modded one I think Duke fits the bill, typical scavenger you get to do a small dungeon to get him recruited and he isnt that very interesting BUT he is neutral, ergo you can just go any route and he wont turn at you.

ED-E, I love the little guy playing music as battles start, and Lonesome Road buffed with him a lot with a built in reloading/workbench + Camarader-E. As for modded companions, it'd have to be Charlie from th3overseer's Depths of Depravity, I didn't expect her to be so good the first time I played through the mod but she surprised me a lot with her characterization and backstory.
For the Fallout games, it's a toss up for me between Nick Valentine and Veronica. For mods? While I love serious characters for New Vegas who fit right in, I think my favorite has to be Vincent Vincent. While he doesn't have a quest tied to him (that i can remember, it's been a bit), he's a silly yet believable character with a decent bit of depth who just goes with the flow of things, and honestly it feels like he fits into the Fallout setting pretty well, especially compared to others.
Though, Vincent Vincent was pulled down by it's author some time ago as it was revealed recently that the voice actor actually killed their wife back in 2016, and effort is being put in by a separate community to find a replacement VA for Vincent, cause. Well, obvious reasons.
In terms of creature companions, Torch the Fire Gecko is my favorite. Having a Fire Gecko Companion is cool, but he can also learn some of your perks, help cook food, and is just precious.
My personal favorite is the Cazador from the "A Cazador's Life" mod.
It starts out as a meek crippled bug you can choose to heal, and starts following you around like a puppy for your display of kindness. It starts out very weak and vulnerable at the start, but once you take the time to protect it from danger and consistently keep it fed, it repays your efforts by being a beast in battle.
Also, you can craft armor for it once it's fully grown (to make it even more tanky) and extract powerful poison from it everyday (if you're into the forgotten craft of poisoned weapons in FNV). Oh, and you can also equip it with a tuxedo hat and give it any name you want. I named mine Clint Eastwood.
Maybe, I'm just biased because I think Cazadors are really cool in general, but "A Cazador's Life" was indeed a very well-made companion mod that's worth checking out.
Big agree he's one of my favorites. But I have to set his health a little higher with console commands. Since he can't be set essential. I have a lot of difficulty mods so he dies to easy if I don't. Especially if explosives start flying. Another one I like is Kaz the cazador. He's a much simpler companion than the one the other guy described but good if you just want a quick essential cazador buddy. And he's even found in the schoolhouse with torch.
(Also in the note for torch the guy who originally had him mentioned a lab and some numbers. Is this just flavor text or is their a hidden quest I can't find?)
@@whoareyoutoaccuseme6588 try out deathclaw commander 2.0. You get a deathclaw egg from quarry junction after killing everyone, and if you keep it in your inventory, it'll hatch into a baby deathclaw which grows

I’ll always remember that one mod companion with the cringey romantic writing, tig ol bitties, red hair, and animated romance scene as the standard for how bad some companion mods can be. Don’t remember the name though.
Oh yeah I think I put that on one time. I can't disagree with a lot of this but after years of trying out NV mods on different computers, Russell and Delilah are the only ones I always use, I think cuz they feel like they were inspired by the themes of FO:NV, and not some side hustle (learning how to mod, or making a waifu.) Never tried Hope Lies, tho. But yeah, Delilah's always tinny and whatever, acting-wise, but it just feels like "this respects what game this is and why I like it so much."
Vanessa. That same modder made another companion for Fo4 that's a lot better.

I currently have a modded companion called Molerat. You take him under your wing before you get shot in the head. He's not the strongest or the best, but he's endearing. His backstory is basically a Lord of the Flies reference, and it's not that deep or anything. Nothing much on the table here, but I just like having him around.
EDIT Jan 3, 2024: So its been a year and I can't have been more wrong. He does indeed have a deeper story that is revealed the longer you travel with him, and you can even influence how he grows as a person. Makes me love the mod even more. Go install it, it's awesome.
I heard many good things about that mod, but I'm not gonna install it yet until the creator updates it to Version 2, which promises DLC integration.

I'd like to make an honorable mention for Eliza. I know the creator feels he failed with her, and she's a bit too up her own ass at times, but I really enjoy having her around.
Yeah! I enjoyed the snippy conversations with her. Plus she played well with Mikeburnfires playthrough
Eliza was a fun character to travel with on my last playthrough, paired along with Russell and Raul to form a sweet bounty-hunting posse for the Someguy2000 and th3Overseer mods.
I remember taking her up to right before the final confrontation with Ulysses in Lonesome Road. She starts up conversation and offers me 2000 caps to just snipe Ulysses while he's turned around.

A new favorite companion mod is Molerat. It's... he's not _actually_ a molerat, of the four-legged variety. It's an orphan kid (teenager) whose real name is Winston and who ended up nicknamed "molerat."
Anyway, he's very similar to Delilah in that he ties directly in with your (that is to say, the Courier's) story. As written, he's a companion you had already picked up some time just prior to being bushwhacked by Benny, Jessup, and McMurphy -- this plays into the game's existing implication that the bullet(s?) you took to the dome swiss-cheesed your memory.
He does have some cool things going on mechanically -- because it's a kind of mentor/protege relationship, you can teach him skills (which skills you can teach him depends on which SPECIAL stats and skills you've chosen [or choose to develop] for your own character.) Want to make him a better gunfighter? You can do that. Want to make him a hawk-eyed scavenger? An field medic for emergencies? Buff up his charisma so that having the kid along when you visit traders gets you better deals? Yep, you can do those things, too.
Most interesting, mechanically, is that when you first meet him, you get to tell him whether you're going for a "Hero", "Outlaw", or "Villain" playthrough -- and, over the course of his travels with you, your chosen playthrough style will be represented as you being a good or bad influence on the kid, giving him certain buffs depending on where your karma sits.
Lastly, the writing and voice acting for him are 100% on point. My current playthrough incorporates him and Hope Lies; early game, with those two, is damn near an overload of Wholesome. Of course, at some point I'll be bringing Russell into the "family" for the additional gunhand, which will alleviate the wholesomeness at least a little... lol

I've tried that one... kinda liked it... except that Scout doesn't have full companion wheel integration when she's a independently mobile. Makes her of diminished utility when a fight breaks out, not that I expect her to be Black Widow tier anyway.@@skeletonbuyingpealts7134

Willow only gets reinstalled in my load orders because of the player home she adds. The Novac Bungalow is perfect for people who want a larger space than the Novac apartment, with more functionality, but while still being accessible without any extra loading screens. Plus, you never need to recruit Willow to use it; just have to ask Jeannie May if you can rent it and its all yours
What if ya kill Jeannie before takin' the Bungalow, what'd happen then?
Not needed anymore, since someone just made a mod that makes that bungalow into a player home with sorting functions.
Willow is the absolute worst, man. I had to draw the line and uninstall the mod when she started singing Bullet With Butterfly Wings in my dream. Not even joking.
@@fredsux1200 I remember when I played with the mod, she was pretty essential to my hardcore playthrough as a firing squad and a burdener to carry kind of gal. I also ran with Molerat, a companion mod that has a cowboy kid with a troubled past. And there was this one time I had leveled up her friendship status to love, making funny remarks to myself to how the Courier is the dad, Willow is the mother and Molerat is the kid in a wasteland family along the way, I had accidentally made love to her. In front of Molerat. Thankfully, he didn't have any response to that, just stood there while Willow danced around naked (which I should've expected there would be some kind of nsfw content in female companion mods) and I was in disbelief on what had happened. Yeah she was kinda annoying with the singing.
@@VicerimusMortem I can see why so many people like her, she can do… everything. Including suck you off. …Not that I got to that part… But I always preferred companions just because I like a buddy, actual usefulness tends to come second. So I really appreciate a well written companion.

Willow’s cheery attitude and the fact she interacts with so much of the game honestly sold her for me- She might seem a little out of place at first, but with how well she interacts with the rest of the game world she just comes off as a rare bolt of sunshine in the Mojave Happy to tagalong with you and comment on the adventures/shenanigans y’all get up to.
Her and Delilah were always two of my favorites, and personally I think you should have checked out Delilah‘s revoice, because it’s actually quite good! ^^
You know it, man. I like having Delilah because of how handy she is as a paramedic once you train her up, and Willow, having another kickass party member with high HP (she actually beat out Cass for max HP in my last run, somehow) who can run in with an automatic never hurts. XD

@@Bert439 Haha, you know it. When I modded Fallout New Vegas into FNV: Reloaded and did a series of videos where I basically turned the game into GoldenEye, or Perfect Dark, I needed someone to be the "Bond Girl" of the playthrough, and Willow just nailed it on the head. :)
Russell was my favourite out of these, he had a lot of extra dialogue if you did the New Vegas Bounties quests with him
It's funny because someguy2000, the creator of Russel, fucking hates the character he wrote and created. He hates the archetype and does nothing but bully Russel.

@@enclave315 well it's too bad that he hates the character he spent so much time and effort writing, voicing and modding into NV, but maybe it was therapeutic for him or something. I will need to take a look at that channel
@@Amig186 yeah his channel is real good he stopped posting on it a while back but got a decent catalog and yeah it's less of a hate more self-deprecation kind of gave Russell a lot of his flaws and uses it as an outlet to deal with them
While I don't use Willow in all my play throughs, I still enjoy her as a companion, probably because she is actually so upbeat most of the time. On a side note, Delilah's updated voice mod goes a long way with making up for the writing. (Which isn't awful, but not the best either) Never saw Hope's mod before though. I'm definitely going to check that one out.
Also check out Molerat. He's well-written, well-voiced modded companion that just came oit this year.
Hope Lies also has two "sibling" companions, Vincent Vincent and Velius, who also have decent writing and voice acting. However, they are not available on Nexus, so you'll have to ask around for the files.
One the one hand I like that she stays upbeet on the other hand it does get a bit lore breaking.
Love the fact this is my first time looking up New Vegas Companion mods and it’s just so happens to be the day you make this video. Its really cool how this community is still somehow still active til this day.

The newer Fallout games have been "Mediocre" at best (Fallout 4), and absolute dumpster fires at worst (Fallout 76). It's no wonder everyone keeps running to New Vegas; It's the last GOOD Fallout game before the entire series went to glorious, radioactive, flaming, spiraling hell.

I'd say Vincent Vincent is by far my favorite companion mod for New Vegas. His acting and writing gel so perfectly. I could easily see him being a vanilla companion. He's Kris Takahashi's best written character, in my opinion. It's terrible what his VA did IRL, though.
Also, it appears you've got the infamous white face bug in your game. Pretty much all the human NPCs (Besides maybe Russell and Willow) in your vid are pale white. If you want, I can help you in fixing it.

Kinda disappointed Eliza wasn't mentioned, you gotta do an entire quest chain for the Great Khans to even get her, her quest thats ties with her doesn't even involve her that much, but in my opinion her brand of humor is really funny, her ability to repair your weapon for free is really useful, and she foreshadows some of the3overseer's other mods.
Oh and she really hates the mich and ralph's crier, telling him to shut up, notably with more character than desmond (which isn't hard given what little he has)

I really liked the Willow mod because of the Deluxe Bungalow in Novac. She's scripted to do different sort of activities to make the place feel lived in, and that made something to look forward to after getting back from the DLCs. Be it Zion, the Big MT, the Sierra Madre or the Divide, having Willow waiting for the Courier back in Novac really turned the house into a home.
Her mod author/actor made another mod for Fallout 4, Heather Casdin, who is basically the polar opposite of Willow in that she's incredibly racist, super horny, and talks shit on basically everyone you meet...and somehow in spite of that it's still very solid, since she's *not* just a generic waifu, although I did get a bit tired of her wanting to have completely attachment free sex all the time with me.
I know if you covered some more companion mods that this video would be really friggin' long but I hope you consider making a sequel to this video where you cover some other ones.

One thing I dislike about most companion mods is that they all refer to you as courier
In NV you're rarely called to that, it gets cringey being called courier all the time
Really the only people who insist on calling you "Courier" that come immediately to mind seem to be Ulysses (which makes sense, considering your not-quite-history together), and Mr. New Vegas, who isn't ever addressing you directly but making passing reference to you. I do like that Niner scoffs at your actual name as unmemorable and only starts calling you "Six" because you specifically mention that some people call you 'Courier Six.' A bit of an ass-pull but it's internally consistent.

When your referenced as Courier in game your “a courier” not “thee courier”
They call you Courier because it is the best description for someone who has no idea who you are

all your videos are amazing! You cover so many great New Vegas mods in depth which is something I don't see many other fallout tubers do.
I might be interested on seeing how Molerat would fare on that list. He has that personal tie with the Courier, being described as a sidekick from them even before Benny tried to kill them. Also has a bunch of utilities much like Willow.
His biggest issue is that his quest is pretty bare bones, but it is still neat. I usually use him a lot, along with Hope, Russel and Eliza
Veronica would be higher up on my personal list if you could just induce that the girl you met in the one DLC was her girlfriend and just talk to her about it. Slap it behind a intelligence eight check or something, but don’t make me just think about it for the rest of the game.

Thing is, Veronica’s dialogue about Elijah’s ramblings is actually base game content that was in the files before Dead Money came out. Im guessing that Christine wasnt originally planned to be a part of that Dlc and they couldnt book Veronica’s voice actress before the dlc shipped. It sucks and I totally agree, but it also wasnt a conscious decision by the devs to leave that unresolved.

Christine not being able to be able to meet Veronica again post-Dead Money is the single biggest mad I have for New Vegas total. Mods exist for it but not the saaaame.

What an incredibly under-watched and underrated channel you got here. I just watched this one and the SG2000 retrospective, and I immediately subscribed.

Combining the companions make for great entertainment, much like mikeburnfire has done in the series. It might get a little wacky at times, but it's fun to hear the clash of their personalities.
I'd like to point out that, while Vanessa does say she requires the "bouncy" mod, she doesn't. You just have to have a compatible skeleton installed if you don't care about the ridiculous body stuff.
She's also a pretty well done companion mod with a decent story to her that has pretty good stakes involved. And she's a legacy from Fallout 3 since she's the same companion from the mod available there.
The only thing that really puts people off her is that there is adult content. The mod author is a French woman, so some things simply aren't so off putting to her as they are to an American audience. Women are generally more comfortable with and interested in stories that involve intimate details than dudes are.
That said, I do believe it's a disservice to simply disregard the mod as a "booby mod", it's not. It's very well done, very well voice acted, and a lot of effort was put in to the creation of it.
As an avid fan of the some guy series, both Russel and Doc Friday are great companions

Desmond always fills that “expendable side character” roll. Like he usually dies during the Silverwood Defense mission or during NV Bounties and I just accept it as cannon 😂
Seeing the companions added by some of these mods has made me more appreciative of New Vegas and Fallout 4 having such enjoyable characters like Arcade, Nick Valentine, Veronica, and Curie to name a few. It's a lot easier to know how good you have it when you've seen the other side.

You should totally do a review of TheOv3rseer's series of mods. It can get comically dark at times, but the story is pretty damn engaging, and so are the companions. Charlie from Depths of Depravity might be my favourite companion from the whole series.

Don't forget Velius. He's made by the same team behind Hope Lies, and the quality of writing and voice acting really shows. He's not available on Nexus though, so you gotta really search for it in the modder's website.

@@VESSEL105 Yeah, Arizona Slave Army was way better at overhauling the Legion without going so far as to make them unrecognizable.
@@whoareyoutoaccuseme6588 Arizona Slave Army is a must in all of my playthroughs, it combines their attempts at having roman soldier uniforms while also using scavenged armor that would actually protect them against firearms instead of just football gear.
I tried Desmond for like an hour and I couldn't keep him. He sounds like a British Teenager. Have a look at Darren Duke + Molerat two newer companions both with great voice acting.
All the vanilla companions are great in different ways imo. As far as mods go though I think Russell is honestly my favorite. Russell was great in my opinion not only because he is a former desert ranger but also because at least to me he shows the player just how far a man can fall when he has lost his identity and sense of purpose. He seemingly feels nothing but pain & contempt towards Ncr who he views as the force that disbanded the rangers( if Boone and Russell are both in the party Russell will constantly belittle Boon by calling him a child killer & other choice insults ) . He only really feels alive again when he's inflicting that pain on others, I think he says something similar to that when asked why he became a bounty hunter in the first place. He knows his trade is morally questionable but he seemingly feels no remorse for anyone he kills because it makes him feel capable & gives him a new sense of purpose the same feeling he had when he was in the desert rangers who to him were his family. When that all went to shit all he had left was a feeling of abandonment and the horrible memories of his past before his time with the rangers which turned him into the man the courier meets. Personally I saw a lot of similarities in his backstory to real life war veterans & how losing that sense of belonging could truly break a man.
2:50 to 3:01 had to turn on captions cause my guy had a mini stroke saying that and i legit could not figure out wtf he said. Loved the video i really needed this to find a worth while follower.

Just wanted to say I love your videos, hope you get way more subs because your content is quality
Ya know despite the affinity system with her I enjoy Willow as a companion. By pure chance I installed the mod when doing a run where I max out melee and survival.
Her ability to drop down a campfire anywhere and let me craft my poisons and powders was invaluable.
Also another reason I like her is the same reaso people dislike her. I enjoy her singing, I get why some hate it but I personally love hearing her break into songs as I am walking the desert, breaks the up the white noise of the winds.
She somehow had more HP in my last playthough than Cass did, so arming her with an automatic and decent armor and letting her tank the bulk of the damage wasn't an impractical strategy for me. Yet another reason to love Willow. XD

Personally one think I dislike a lot is when a mod add its contents just right up at Goodsprings: giving such advantages right at the very beginning spoil part fo the fun, at least in my opinion.
Obviously this doesn't apply too much when used with "alternative starts" mod.
Another companion mod is "Scratch". Sadly her content is not that much for now in terms of dialogues but the character has a lot of potential and is just adorable XD

There are tons of both good and bad opinion about New California (personally i think it is a really great mod with some important flaws.).

Phenomenal video, wish there were more high quality mod reviews like this out there. Your opinions on Willow are spot on. I think one day I'll try my hand at editing out the romance options from the mod. She always struck me as a teenager, so all that waifu stuff just feels off to me
Nice! It makes me sad that you made this video just some months after i stopped playing new vegas, i remember that i was looking for some companion mods and i didn't like a lot of em, The storyteller and Hope Lies look super cool, shame i didn't try them out. Personally, my favorite is Russel, it fits into the lore, has his own cool storyline and he actually feels like a wasteland inhabitant, not some overcheery waifu like Willlow or some childish punk like Niner (Although i did like him)

I'm in the market for mods and Hope Lies looks worth it. I already have Willow and I pretty much agree that like, yeah she's really technically impressive but she absolutely feels like like a cartoon waifu, especially since none of her dialogue options allow you to push her away all that much. It's wasted potential, since she already has the building blocks to be an actual character with a place in the world: She's a pro-NCR wastelander with her own experiences and perspectives that make her who she is, but in practice you could do everything she despises (i.e. support the Legion) and all it takes is to talk her into it and she insists on staying your BFF/Lover regardless of anything, which is something even the Vanilla companions don't do.

have you tried Crossroad? contains 2 compaions and their own quests, you go to a legion slave market and get asked to buy an ex brotherhood memeber for a bounty hunter to collect the bounty, you can either free the captive and have them as a companion or take the target in and get the bounty hunter, theres mutiple quests for each and theres plenty of dialogue options

I'm real sad to see that Vincent Vincent isn't on this list.
He's gotta be my favourite modded companion. The character is funny as hell _and_ has a decent amount of gameplay justification for keeping him around.
For fun story companions, Lunette was probably my top favorite modded companion. She isn't the usual combat pack mule - its very different, but not over done. The other modded companion that was different (not as good but different) was the ARES project - but only with the addon mod that makes her into a realistic looking android. Honorable mentions to Eliza and Delilah. For the base game its a tough call - its probably a tie between Boone and Veronica - both useful in their own way and with good back stories.

I'm honestly not a huge fan of Lunette. TomInfinite (or whatever he was calling himself last, dude had meltdowns and left the Nexus at least twice in the time I knew him) was extremely up his own ass, waxing rhapsodic about the lack of agency in Fallout 4 while creating one of the most gamey, unimerssive mods for the game. He was also a terrible writer and extremely difficult to deal with.
I first met him when Lunette was originally released, back when she had more ties to other mods (I'm pretty sure Willow) and didn't have voice acting. Her actual dialogue was *extremely* bad (one of the first things she tells you is that she won't eat "incest meat" and, honestly, same) and I offered him my services as a professional editor to fix some of the glaringly bad misspellings throughout the game. Tom was more than willing to have me help him out but wasn't interested in meeting me anywhere near halfway; among other things he expected me to extract his dialogue script from the mod because I guess just emailing me the Word doc like a normal person was too casual for him.
He also scripted one of the worst boss fights I've ever encountered in a video game and when most of his player base complained about it, he called us all casuals and got butthurt. Dude did not handle criticism well at all.

Lunette is a cringe manic pixie dreamgirl who will lecture you about the evils of killing people in fights while happily throwing you ammo. She is the *worst* example of a technical pacifist I've ever seen.
Honestly, TomInfinite's best mod, and one that didn't get anywhere near enough credit, was his Item Browser. it just gave you a GUI from which you could add items to your inventory from every expansion and mod you had installed. It was single-handedly the best roleplayer mod I ever encountered and I'm far more upset it's been scrubbed from the Nexus than I am about Lunette.

I know you mention in the description often that you will cover Dust, New California, and The Frontier, will you also cover Mothership Zeta Crew and its addons (Fallout 3), the A Quest for Heaven Trilogy (Fallout 3), Beyond Boulder Dome (New Vegas), the theoverseer series (New Vegas), and/or Salt Lake Stories (New Vegas).
I know MZC was never finished, but I feel it is just as important in the history of Fallout modding (if not more) than Alton.
Also, for this video, I'm disappointed that you never mentioned Lunette. I always liked that mod.

Wonderful video! I'm considering another New Vegas playthrough and you've given me some good options.
Your comments on Willow and Delilah remind me of the Oblivion companion Vilja. She's sort of a mix of both of those but for Oblivion: She has a huge breadth of lines that actually comment on in-progress quests, locations and sometimes other NPCs. She also has some fun features like being able to find a random undiscovered location or do shopping for supplies, but they're all contextualized through written dialogue pretty well. However, while her voice actor is clearly giving it her all, her mic is clearly from pre 2016 and the audio quality is (charmingly) low quality. And a good chunk of her lines are (also charmingly) pretty clunky.
Interestingly, Terry Pratchett really loved the mod, and I believe he even wrote some lines for it. The author and programmer even added some features based on his requests, like the ability to have her lead the player out of the dungeon once it was finished. There's a lot of fun history there and that truly makes her endearing to me, even if I cringe a bit whenever she shouts "I'LL KILL YOU" in combat and the VA's mic peaks.

He is a nice little brother sort of like companion. His story is written good and the voice acting is A tier. Gameplay wise he's more of a cook, scavenger and etc.

The worst thing about Willow is that you can't really dismiss her, only send her home. This means that if you're playing with the FNV Unofficial Patch, it's impossible to play Lonesome Road without permanently ruining your relationship with Willow.
ran into that issue with one of the companion deathclaw mods at one point too. Like c'mon you'd think someone woulda thought of that after even the first DLC dropped considering it was Dead Money.

As of now, my favorite companion mod is still Willow. Idk, I never found her "unrealistically" cheery (at least to my memory, but I'll admit it's been some time), and even thought she was a breath of fresh air from some of the edgier companions (and other darkness in FNV). Just a joy to be around. _But_ I also haven't tried some of the companion mods I've wanted to, like Hope. I won't argue with some of the complaints about her though, like the occasional "lol randomness," and she certainly could have had a more prominent character arc. I feel like I have other nitpicks about Willow but can't remember any right now (I'd say "maybe that means it's time for another playthrough," but I'm not gonna kid myself. I'm doing other stuff right now. Someday though).
Characters like Desmond and Russell never interested me. I tried Delilah years ago but at the time didn't see what all the fuss was about (not that I remember giving her much of a chance), and also I heard her speaking in Freeside when she was _not_ following me. So... that was just a bad enough sign for me to uninstall her. I also enjoyed Niner and really hope that alleged remake the mod author spoke about not too long ago is still underway; he has the potential to be one of the greats.
Side note, it's really cool to me realizing that Hope Lies and Vincent Vincent (which I also hope gets an update so that it exists again) were apparently made (written?) by the same person, since they're such different characters. I know that _shouldn't_ be a surprise, especially since I like to write myself, but... idk, it just is.
As for favorite vanilla companions... honestly, I really have no idea. Maybe... Piper? Veronica? Sulic. Vic the Trader! May he rest in peace.... Oh! Lenny the Ghoul! Idk, there aren't any I _love,_ I tend to either really enjoy or give no craps about them all. Weirdly, I seem to be more attached to a lot of the F2 companions despite them not having much in the way of quests to my memory. Maybe that's just because it's the most recent game I've played.
Uh. Closing remarks.
I think the mod author of Willow listened to those complaints and ended up using them to make an improved character in the form of Heather Casdin for Fallout 4. She is more realistic and has a slightly better affinity system, but I still prefer Willow since she is more cheerful than Heather. Additionally, while I did like Delilah's writing, I wasn't a fan of either of her voice actors, and I felt that the abilities she gives you are too overpowered. I remember one of them being a complete replacement of the vanilla Living Anatomy perk for free. And as far as Hope Lies and Vincent Vincent, I saw mikeburnfire's playthrough of them and I can't really say I find those mods interesting.
@@RevanKnight56 Tbh I don't like Heather all that much. I'm not entirely sure why; I guess she just feels like any other generic Fallout companion in terms of personality and plot, she doesn't pull me in like Willow (or others) did. And, as you say, I also _enjoy_ Willow's cheerfulness.
Also, I feel mikeburnfire (as much as I love the duo in FNV) really make Hope look awful, both through editing and insults. I'd suggest giving her a shot one playthrough; and if you don't like her, just don't have her follow you and uninstall for the next run. It's what I plan on doing, anyway, but ofc you do you.

Niner is the only one that I have used. I liked him a lot and enjoyed doing drugs with him. Definitely a shame that it ended too soon. Would had enjoyed more questing with him.

Favorite companion mod without a single doubt is Vincent Vincent the guy has some of the funniest lines ever. His story is very interesting in that he doesn't always have a definitive one probably because he has been all over the U.S. and has so many stories to tell. Through his voice acting and story he actually feels like a character from the base game of new vegas.
Edit: I know what the original Voice actor did and it is absolutely horrid. I enjoy Vincent only because he is a fun companion I don't support what his voice actor did at all.

Vincent is my favorite companion, his random bits are great.
This video just goes to show how incredibly important voice acting is to mods. It might just be the most important aspect of companion mods, quest mods, and of course, total conversions (Enderal being a positive highlight in this regard, for the most part). For me personally, voice acting can make or break an entire mod experience.
Yet, it's so difficult to have "good" voice acting because you need a lot of different things to come together. You need good writing, high quality audio equipment, multiple skilled voice actors (or in lieu of that, a select few voice actors with a lot of range), focused voice direction, and a general consistency of audio quality and sound editing for all of the actors. Practically no mods have all of these, and a ton of professional games lack all of these qualities too.
And of course, the voice acting still ultimately needs to fit into the world the mod is being created for. If an accent or pronunciation is out of place, it can totally kill the immersion. Often it's not even possible to really achieve this, since you don't have access to the actors from the base game, so you can't just insert new lines that reference the characters of your mod. And this bit goes for more than just companion mods -- it can be immersion-breaking to not have speaking characters from the base game reference the story and content of a mod whatsoever.
It's a difficult problem that doesn't really have any easy solutions. I'm curious to see whether Bethesda acknowledges this at all in their future games, and I wonder how they could make things easier for modders who want to more seamlessly introduce new content into these games. After all, it's modders who have kept these games relevant for so long, so Bethesda would be foolish not to improve the ways in which mods can enhance their games.
One idea I think there is a lot of potential in is AI. Theoretically, it can be used to both generate new lines for existing characters, and create entirely new voices that still sound believable in the context of these game worlds. I'm sure people have already been working on AI-generated lines for the voice actors in the base game of Skyrim and whatnot, but I feel that Bethesda themselves could support these efforts and possibly help enhance AI voice models, as long as all of their voice actors were on-board.
Anyway, this comment was way too long and nobody will probably read it, but I thought this would be a good place to discuss these concepts.
There's a somewhat lowkey companion mod name Lizbeth and if you activate this mod, she spawns near Hope. I kinda roleplay thinking Lizbeth was some kind of Hope's travel companion/bodyguard. I never let the two separate unless on separate occasions. Kinda fun.
Delilah and Willow, I love these two so much.
Delilah is awesome because she becomes a walking autodoc as you train her up, making Hardcore much less stressful, and Willow, as well, is handy to have once you train her up.
I know some people like to talk trash about these two because they're not very useful as far as survival and fighting goes. And honestly, I think these people are missing the point.
Delilah is frail as a flower because she's a HEALER, a paramedic. She automatically uses Stimpaks in her inventory on you when you're hurt. When was the last time you saw a nurse in this game who could tank more than 1 headshot from a shotgun? Just keep her behind you while you fight and you're golden. Hell, I'd have her back away from combat and take cover if I could so she doesn't get shot by a stray bullet.
Willow, she starts out somewhat weak, but give her enough training and she'll quickly turn into a pretty capable fighter. On my last playthough, she somehow wound up with more HP than CASS. That meant I could equip her with strong armor, give her an automatic rifle, and watch her tear Legion Assassin's apart while tanking their hits. She's pretty kickass with an Assault Carbine, but her skill set is limited elsewhere because they didn't want to make her too powerful. She's already OP as hell with how she finds valuable scrap all the time, including bobby pins, another way to collect more once you've exhausted all the bobby pin locations in the wasteland.
That's one thing I like about some of these companion mods: They feel *BALANCED* and fair. If one character was utterly broken and overpowered, everybody would just use them over and over and the game would lose it's challenge. I prefer when companions have strengths and weaknesses you have to work around. It keeps the challenge somewhat fair.
