- Today we have another Setra drive. This time, I take you on a full express-run of my regular route in University of Maryland's fleet unit 0511.
My GoPro settings did not record at the normal settings, so I apologize for the strange framing and cropping.
Bus: 2011 Setra S417 TC
Engine: Mercedes-Detroit OM471
Transmission: Allison B500

Such a great coach! I was able to test drive this for the US market when they were first introduced. Huge fan of the Setras! Great video!
I would have loved to drive one when they were new! Somehow, I don't suppose they were all too different, since these were so freaking smooth.

I like 2014 Setra S417 to have a Sky View Glass Roof with larger monitors, middle door with lavatory, and 3 point seat belts.
Those buses ride nice, I’ve been on one of em before.

AWESOME sounding bus, although my heart is still with the smooth sounds of the J4500. Is the S417 TC a smaller bus? It sounds like it (can't see, is why I'm asking) :-D Great video as always, brother. :-D
They're both about the same size, full size motor coaches. I think they're both around 46 feet (~14 meters) long. Our Setras seat 56 and our MCIs seat 54, but have the optional table.
@@eugew23 Oh, great. Didn't know about the optional tables on the MCI's. Never been on a Setra so from a rider's standpoint, can't do a comparison.

The 417s have independent front suspension. How do they ride and handle compared to a Prevost or MCI with a straight front axle ?
Any other big differences between a 417 and a J4500 or H3-45 ?
In Europe, all buses have 62mph speed limiters. So jealous to look at your speedometer (lol)
Ah I suppose that makes sense (100kph). Here, there is no universal standard! The Setras are limited to 74mph (120kph), our MCIs are limited to 72mph (116kph), and our Gilligs (city buses) are limited to 65mph (105kph), but I've heard of other agencies limiting their Gilligs to 55mph (89kph). Interesting, huh?

@@eugew23 With some agencies, mechanics decide top speeds if they think the vehicles powertrain configuration (choice of transmission and axle ratio) and default top speed will run the engine too hard. A transit bus with a 4-speed Voith and a typical short axle ratio (5.13:1) will provide decent stop and go urban performance but will make the engine run hard at high rpms on the highway, and so the agency I worked for will govern NovaLFS with 4-speed Voith transmissions at 56 mph, and the same LFS with 6-speed ZF or Allison transmissions at 65 mph. We also had Prevost motorcoaches with different combinations of axle ratios (3.81/4.10/4.30/4.56), engines (435 hp Volvo D13 and 350 or 400 hp Detroit S60) that resulted in various levels of acceleration and hill-climbing capability and cruise rpm (all were limited to 69 mph). The motorcoach with a 400 hp S60 and 4.30 or 4.56 axle ratio was a jetliner-like beast to drive, out-accelerates normal traffic when the light turns green and merges easily on highways.

They won’t do that where I live as the roadside tax collectors need their daily fix of revenue. They invite you to speed, then pull you over and ticket you.
Which do you like better, this or the MCI?
While I like the modernness of the MCI, I like the control layout and way the Setra drives better.

A setra specifically. I have a 1997 s217 hdh and man.. the manual doesn't explain well enough.

Engine brake/retarder controls. Setras have five settings for engine brake strength.

On Setras, that right stick controls the strength of the retarder. There is like 4 or 5 settings and they are STRONG.

Anybody would be able to explain why us Setra has much shorter front and rear overhangs ( in process longer wheelbase and larger turn radius)) than euro Setra? Is it about us regulations , if yes what's the underlying reason(s)? Thanks.

I don't know if there is an age limit, but once you earn your commercial drivers license, you must also obtain a DOT physical card and maintain its validation.
Daimler needs to bring the newer Setras to North America.
Would be nice, but I think Diamler/New Flyer/MCI and Setra's relationships are on the rocks and I think it is preventing Setra from bringing their 500 series products to the US.

Your lane maintaining abilities are outstanding, I feel like to keep such a colossal machine centered you can’t trust your instincts. Maybe the height perspective adds to that feeling of being way outside of your lane when you’re in the dead middle.

I actually found a liking to this bus due to a video game. There not bad I just wish the games engines were more like the real deal itself.

Those are a rarity in the US. I think older buses like the MCI MC9 have a five-speed manual, but pretty much all modern buses in active use are automatics. I'd love to get my hands on one, though.
