I think your problem is your pickup pipe bud. If you lengthen a pickup pipe and use the same diameter tube it will put additional strain on the pump. Ideally you would to downsize slightly if lengthening. Looks like the first section of the pickup is made from larger tube? You could measure the factory pickup and calculate it properly if your clever, I just used a slightly smaller tube that would slip into the factory tube when extending for a rear sump setup. Too small or too big will both increase the work load of the pump before its even started pumping oil around the engine. Gotta be worth a try before you throw in the towel. Cheers Matt
Don't beat yourself up and stress about us subscriber's. I can't speak for everyone but I know I enjoy every video regardless. You have to remind yourself that you're the first person to try and put an SR-20 in a MX5. There's going to be a few headaches and a lot of trial and error. We believe in you Josh and I know yall will fix it and move forward. Your almost at the end of the tunnel
Just another bump in the road that you guys will overcome no doubt. cant wait to see it finished but more importantly cant wait to see the smiles of all you guys when it works like it should.
Hey guys also to solve your oil issues as Dave explained with the psi issues, while maintaining your oil cooling etc is to dry sump the SR20. It’ll be a bit expensive but regulating the oil pressure will be an external factor that you can change.
Great to see a video from you guys!!! Needed My Drift Games Fix!! 😂 Hang in there guys I know it’s been tough, maybe even tougher than most people have trying to get in to Drifting, but especially when you have 2 cars, 2 drivers and 2 times the money spent! But we’re all Cheering For Ya! And all the tough times will make the Best Times That Much Better And Those First Podium’s Will Be So Sweet And Special To All The Drift Games Crew And Fans!!! Can’t wait to see Josh And Adam in their first runs against each other!!! That’s gonna be SICK!!!!! I’m only part Irish and my lick is just as bad as you guys! 😂☘️
It’s Shit that yous didn’t get to compete but hey look at yous being all grown up and not just sending it and blowing another engine. Roll on round two. Great video.
Never give up lads! I have a omega with a Saab big turbo in there.. this last 4 years.. hard to get anything done.. youse are the men everything can be done!
No worries, we don't mind the breakage :P It's just content TBH... When it come to the oil pressure issue, it looks like its oil slosh, and it looks like its both sideways and under breaking, a real temporary fix would be to over fill it, but from looking at that sump it isn't really well baffled, should be trap doors to help it not drop that low. The continuous low pressure with the longer pickup is strange, maybe try modifying the oil pump and increase the pressure? OR just dry sump it and never worry about it :D
All u boys are pushing and working hard and fixing all the cars that u have all got and still making the videos for us all to watch, and we all know that Josh love's his Mazda and he still pushing through and he never gives up until it's fixed. Josh u should name your car Julian from problems child film lol 🤣🤣 keep up with the good work boys from Rob the Welsh boy 🏴🏴👍👍
Few options, billet oil pump gears, GTiR oil pump has higher pressure or VE oil pump conversion but that’s a fair bit of work, different pick up and machined down pulley etc
I actually want to help you get this going because it shouldnt be overly complicated. I run a thicker oil in my SR20 which is still in a 180sx, which is a 20w60 but having that longer oil pick up isnt doing any favours. So potentially a dry sump system is going to have be done or a higher compacity pump like a GTIR pump but that means the engine will need to be completely stripped to have it fitted. I just want to see josh have a decent run in such a sick car that will be so competitive when its together!
As crap as it is for you guys it’s good to see the lows sometimes. I don’t think some will realise the effort that goes into making these cars work sometimes and it’s not all highs and savage manji’s! I had heart ache with mine for 18 months before it really started to work. It’s the absolute worst when it’s the car letting you down in a comp, so reckon you made the best decision to sit it out and get it 💯. So glad to hear it’s hopefully sorted 💪🏼💪🏼
It seems to me like you do not have enough oil volume in the engine plus sump to fill the pickup, especially when the oil is sloshed across the sump... the obvious guaranteed fix is to dry sump it, so that there's always a big reservoir of oil to feed the motor, & then you scavenge the sump to refill it.
Too many people in these comments saying "go dry sump, go dry sump!" but that doesn't resolve issues regarding oil pressure. Dry sumps are useful if you have the extra 6K it costs to buy it, you need ground clearance and if you need to move around weight in the car. To resolve oil PRESSURE, you need to look at the oil pump, sounds like the standard SR20 pump can't handle the extra ancillaries of the oil cooler, the filter relocation housing plus the length of the oil pickup. Hopefully there's an upgrade style pump available which I'm sure there will be, and I would imagine it's a lot cheaper than buying a whole fuckin dry sump system. 🤣
The sump requires trap doors on the extended wings and ideally, a tray that sits above the pickup head to help hold oil in. Pick up tube could be a smaller diameter, 50W oil will also help.
Anyone that knocks you down has never competed in motorsport. PS We (MB MOTORSPORT) are at the rallycross at MONDELLO next weekend. Hope I get to bump into you guys, feel free to pop over. Hope you have more luck in the future. Long live DG!!!
Might be a shit suggestion, but is the engine on the right angle in the engine bay? Just looks like it gets oil starve when under braking, idk.. worth a shout mainly for how many times it's been put in and out
@@driftgames_life interesting, well fingers crossed someone else on this thread or one of you brainy boys figure it out soon enough, watch now, it'll be something so menial and not worth thinking about haha
The sump baffling is shit. The baffles need to be moved closer to the sides of the pick up. And swing gates installed, so the holes get blocked by oil pushing the gates closed onto them in sideways slosh. Look inside the greddy extened sumps for an sr20. You will see what I mean
With the now lengthened pickup pipe and all the additional pipe work for oil cooler etc it’s possible the pump just can’t keep up 🤔. Maybe bypass the cooler just for curiosity sake
Surely 5 or 6k for a drysump set up is the way forward to save on another 10k engine build with the same issue or what other way can you mod the sump to reduce the pick up length
Shit buzz :( I do hope it starts going right for the little MX5 when it was going twas well able to shred, Also I want to give ye 1 piece of advice, all Couriers will tell you overnight means a 48 hour turnaround, when you think about it, for example I gave all Friday on our circuit in Dublin going around collecting "overnight" deliveries, so the company had to process package and label the goods, I pick them up got them to our warehouse on Friday night where the good then have to be scanned processed sorted and placed in the relevant bays, I'll then come the following morning and take the goods to Kilkenny just say, NOW that's when the whole system runs smoothly which it dosent always especially getting stuff in from the far reaches of the country or from overseas, office supplies and motor factor parts are different for example Also not a lot of couriers are like me, I actually care about what I deliver and trying to keep customers happy as best I can not many others use our proof of delivery system either (I photograph the goods on your doorstep)
Sounds stupid but I know on LS engines when you upgrade to higher pressure/volume oil pumps you have to swap the oil pickup tube O-ring. If you dont it will lose pressure or worse, have none. A friend of mine had this happen to his. The issue is when you install the pickup tube with any of the rings provided it feels like it has a good seal. But it doesnt. So we looked it up and saw that we had used the wrong O-ring and swapped it out. BAM! We went from about 15 psi (1 bar) at idle to almost 80psi (5.5 bar). Id at least entertain that idea if it hasnt been already. Its a $.10 fix for a potential multiple thousand $ problem.
I'd say it's the oil cooler was the problem as a friend of mine was using an oil cooler on his 2jz and it drove his oil pressure down also, and it wasn't blocked or anything, it was tested
im wondering if the oil is too thick? because it can cause problems when trying to stick up oil. that's too thick, especially with the slosh i would suggest going up in weight. at least that should let the oil flow freely. so if it's 10w50, i would say 20w50 or 30w50 should bring up the pressure some
I'm not gunna lie at this stage the SR has had so many issues would it not be worth changing for something that is already rear sumped to stop all these oil pressure issues
Josh I know you love the miata but my opinion get a bigger chassis with bigger motor, just a thought or opinion please build a BARRA motor for one of the drift cars

Probably not what you want to hear but you need a dry sump. The initial outlay of cash is eye watering and its extra complexity, but its less than a new engine. Sometimes its just easier to do whats already been done before but The Mazda was awesome and you guys are also awesome!
Considering the cost of SRs today, wouldn’t a dry sump system be a worthwhile expense now? Is that in the cards?
Why it already isn't on there is beyond me.. when Sr oil pumps and gears are pretty weak when pushing it this hard

Yeah but it’s more of a solution for a big failure than general running low oil pressure
I don't know the price in Ireland for a BARRA but in South Africa it's R8000-R13000 depends on silver top or green top and that's about €400-€600
