I remember watching a full documentary on Big Al's life on Netflix when was 8-10 (I think) and I remember crying watching him fall over and finally succumb to his injuries. Definitely a dino I will remember him for the rest of my life.
I could instantly tell by the title what Allosaurus was going to be spoken here. Big Al was a great contribution to paleontology and may he or she Rest In Peace. Another great video too.
I was a student at the University of Wyoming 30 years ago (1994-1998) where I used to on occasion chill out in the Geology Museum where Big Al is displayed in between classes. It was overall, a quiet place to hang out and just take in all the wonderful displays. I vividly remember Al's injured foot and wondering what was up with that. This was of course years before the BBC Walking with Dinosaurs doc on 'him' was produced. I remember being quit taken aback when I first saw the doc on the Discovery Channel back in 2001 and seeing my old stomping grounds on a major science documentary. Very cool.
Nobody deserves to die at 17, he had all of his life ahead of him but he never even got to go to university. Just shows how precious the time we have is.
Waking with Dinosaurs still looks amazing even 20 years later. A good shot isn't just accurate and/or high resolution CGI, it's interesting lighting and styling choices, appealing environments for each shots and (still) excellent practical effects. (And by the way what an amazing soundtrack!) What an incredible show, the 2025 sequels gonna have a hard time reaching the same standard. But damn if I don't get excited by the news!
It’s almost like it’s written as a tragedy. He’s young, and has his whole life ahead of him, but experiences a truly brutal world that kills him before his time truly comes. Heck he even dies in a river bed. Not a climatic confrontation with another dinosaur but a sad and painful passing by himself in an isolated location. The fact he was preserved almost perfectly makes it even sadder. In his life he was seemingly insignificant but proved to be the most influential of his species almost 150 million years after he died. It’s the classic Van Gogh tragedy where someone (or something) experiences a horrible life and is only appreciated after death.

I've seen the Big Al specimen in real life at the University of Wyoming Geological Museum in Laramie, WY. Even for a subadult, he was massive. I would've been terrified seeing this animal alive and breathing.

Whether it’s spiritual or all coincidental, or a little bit of both, how purely magnificent that our Earth creates and protects things like this for us to see into the past. Big Al was just another creature who, like all living things, fought for their life and survival. In the end, Al’s demise is heart-wrenching because they were cut down far too young, and died an agonizing death. The saddest thing, is this isn’t even uncommon. This is the reality of nature; the luck of the draw. Life can change in an instant, and this is merely one fascinating example, immortalized in stone. 🖤

I'm not sure why, but Big Al's story has always made me very sad
