    They did this as their acceptance sing the night they won in '78. I hadn't heard it again until now. Simply exquisite.

    My favorite BSU song of all time. Loved it so much I transcribed it off of their album way back in 1980, when I was a senior in high school. My quartet sang it and won the Young Men in Harmony for the state of Minnesota that year! We went to Salt Lake City to the International that year, and were walking down the street from the convention center to our hotel one evening when we literally stumbled into Bluegrass Student Union, right on the street. We had to stop them and talk to them - we were in full tilt hero worship, but these guys were all so incredibly nice and encouraging! We told them our story, and about this song; and right then and there on the street in Salt Lake City in front of the Convention Center, Kenny Hatton suggested that we break it out, and he sang lead with us on this song! It was a thrill of a lifetime - and obviously a memory that I've never forgotten (and never will), all these 40 years later! What was more amazing to us than their incredible musicianship was the grace that they demonstrated towards a bunch of high school seniors that night, there on the streets of Salt Lake City... Thank you, guys. Your kindness and graciousness have stuck with me throughout my life, and I will always think of you as my favorite quartet of all time, because of that!

      I had the same opportunity once at a teacher's convention back in 2004 when FRED was on the roster for entertainment and sang for all of us one of the evenings. I approached the bass after and told him I was a barbershopper and we went into the lobby and I got to sing tenor with them on 'Sweet and Lovely' it was such an awesome experience!

    Don't think they've ever been to an actual auction. If you're selling the object for the same amount of money that you last asked for, you're not asking for enough money.
    They quit the chorus part of the song with the auctioneer asking for 45 dollars, and then also said "sold that hog for a 45 dollar bid." If you listen to Leroy Van Dyke sing the song, he ends with the last ask being 55 dollars, and the hog selling for 50 dollars. This is because when the auctioneer asked for $55, no one bid, so it sold to the person with the high bid of $50.
    The auctioneer's job is to get the most $$$$ for the object being sold, so 99% of the time, you don't say sold until your last ask gets no bidders.
    The one exception to this rule I can think of is if you're selling something no one really wants, that obviously isn't worth much. If you get a single bid, you may say "sold" as soon as that one bid is made.

    Look up the Nighthawks version. They own these chumps. Twenty years earlier. You can walk home on the Nighthawk's chords, they are so solid. Not so these guys at all. And there are textures in the Nighthawks' version that are magnificent. Triplets as triplets should be done. True artistry. It's on TH-cam. Listen to that and this. Cream to maybe half and half. A pale version of the original.

    • @YerBoiTex
      @YerBoiTex ปีที่แล้ว +3

      You mean their video from the 1963 International Championship? That's the first version I've seen of this song before I saw this. But you sir, are wrong, flat out. First off there's no reason to be so rude to the BGSU Group, their work is amazing, they have their own style and they sing better than most of us and you probably can. You cannot criticize them so harshly if you can't do it. Second, there are things wrong with the Nighthawks version, granted the microphones and audio aren't as good as they are in this version, there are still some hiccups. On the first (double) clap of the nighthawk's they messed up, the lead was off, that caused them to get off beat for a sec and they chuckled but they recovered and handled it well. And the final bunch of chords, the BGSU are so much smoother, and more passionate. The Nighthawks version at the point of "than you hear from a real hillbilly band" to me is dissonant and clashes, again, the old audio equipment doesn't help, but I think its more than that. For a more listenable experience, the BGSU group wins, but it's still fascinating to Watch the Nighthawks, and both groups for that matter. They are both professional groups and are passionate of their music, relish in that part.

      @@YerBoiTex BGSU wouldn't have made the top ten in the sixties. Sidewinders, Four Renegades, The Oriole Four, Suntones, and so many others. BGSU, like Grandma's boys, had severe harmony accuracy problems. I wince when I listen to them. Can't tune worth a dang. Almost chords do not match chords you can walk home on. So I listen to them, and the Nighthawks, even though the Nighthawks were recorded on inferior equipment twenty years earlier, and the BGSU simply copied them, but the chords suck. Attacks and releases suck. They are simply just not as good. I was a judge for twenty years. They are a grade level below the Nighthawks. Only with Second Edition did we begin to see solid singing and style after Dealer's Choice. BGSU and Grandma's Boys suck at both. I knew them all. From the Suntones to Platinum. Then they bored me. I even knew Grandma's Boys wives! I directed both SPEBSQSA and Sweet Adeline's.
      Listen to how the Nighthawks push each chord clean to the end, and BGSU drop every chord. Then tell me I don't know what I'm talking about.
