STARTING OVER | My Off Grid Cabin Build

  • It's been a long time coming. We stumbled upon the opportunity to purchase this off grid cabin in remote northern Maine. This will be a huge project to improve the road and renovate the cabin inside and out.
In July, just before I bought the cabin I was hospitalized and diagnosed with diverticulitis and an intestinal abscess. This infection made me lose weight and strength and I'm still slowly recovering.

I found the chapters in th-cam.com/users/postUgkxYGamVaHfdHiPlAQaLa7zkwR02OKpGYDU to be very relevant to my project as I embarked on building my first ever structure from the ground up. I especially found this Ryan’s Shed Plans to be of great use when it came to building the roof. I was able to do all the cuts and installation by myself, with a little reference to this Ryan’s Shed Plans.

I think it’s wise to tear down the whole thing and start fresh. The amount of black mold on the walls is a concern for your own wellbeing. Start fresh free of the mold and you will live healthier in the long run. I am sure there are a few viewers who could support you and help you get the tools you need to build fresh. Hang in there and God will bless you abundantly in the coming weeks! Stay warm and safe. Love seeing Gracie resting in comfort! ❤

SUGGESTION raise your new cabin incase that land ever floods. Nice vids.
Becareful what nails u use on bridge as they can work free and pop your tires when you drive over them. Maybe use steel cables or heavy duty bolts.
Youve given yourself the answer by pulling that house apart. Its saying, build new. You did your due diligence.
Becareful w that mold around and Gracie even when burning it. Those spores are dangerous to you lungs and health. All the infestations, structural and moisture issues you uncovered gives you insight on how and what to do to make your new cabin better.
If anything, leave it up, minus the mold, and use it as a wood shop, garage and tool storage as you build your new cabin.

Starting a new build may or may not be cheaper, but its faster and gives you a better sense for what you're doing and where the end of the road is. But I would not demo the old cabin yet. It would serve as a good storage area for material and a work station when its too wet or too hot. At the very least it gives you a place to put your tools.

On the bottom of your floor joinces (outside part near the ground) staple metal screening (at most building supply big box stores) so that the mice from getting in the cabin from underneath. This is what professionals builders do in German with cabin builds. This will prevent other larger animals too from biting into the floor ply wood and getting into the home.

Some of the old floor covering products were made with asbestos in them. I am an apartment manager and more than once I have had floor installers refuse to tear out the old flooring because of asbestos concerns. They do however cover the old flooring with thin plywood sheeting and then lay the old floor over that.

Congratulations on your cabin and land. And prayers for your swift recovery from your intestinal illness, I have IBS so it does change your life. I eat pickles, Great Value Walmart dill spears as they're mild on spice and vinegar, to immediately neutralize the stomach acid and balance the PH in my gut naturally.

Nothing that a can of gas and a match won't fix. Good luck. I've been involved in a few cottage reno's and mice and mold come with the territory for anything old. Great job!

Wise move starting over and working with a fresh and new perspective. Who knows once you opened the ceiling what construction mishaps awaited you.
