  • Replacing that press-fit field coils on a Lincoln sa 250 welder. the overall method may be the same for an SA-200 and an sae 300. I manufactured a bracket to press the field coils out and used a makeshift press and bottle jack to get it done.

One of the best videos on this subject I could find. Loved your design and problem solving approach. I appreciate you taking the time to drop scholarship on us. These are amazing machines and a great project to restore one like you are doing. Again, many thanks for sharing.

This is really awesome our Sparky friend. I am sure that you took a few brakes while dissecting this problem. Is the electrical system the same on our friendly 200? Thank goodness for your patience, some machines would have lead poison. Hello from Texas

Excellent! How did you determine that it was the Shunt coils that needed replacing? Currently I am struggling with an SAE 300 DC (F-226) YR 1969. I got it to fire up after 7 years of non-use however, when I go to weld, it will not strike an arch. I cannot afford to take it to a shop and have em replaced that way and your awesome video made it more approachable/doable. I see videos about testing the armature and stuff but I do not know how to test for these particular part your working on. Do you test for Ohms, DC current, while running. off, or do you have to undo one part of the attachments to test???
    Thanks man.

Was there any definitive evidence as to what caused the shunt failure or was it assumed to be damaged by rodents? Was that a used shunt that was installed for $350 or a rewound shunt? It looked fairly old.

Do you know what type of wire gage it takes for each cable I'm doing the same thing as we speak

Why wouldn't ya just order the magnet wire and rewind it yourself? (Just count the turns as you unrewind)
and also take another welder tack a bolt to the bottom of the shunt and then use a slide hammer to remove it, then cut that off and install the same side you removed with a blunt piece and a friend using a sledgehammer. STAY AWAY FROM TOUCHING THE TOP OF THE CORE SHUNT! only bottom!

I mean I havent done this to my sa 200 prior, but your method just sounds plain stupid and not even possible. Have you done this before using the method your reccomending? The fuckin things are in there pressed in tight! You think a slide hammer will work lol...

Oh and re winding the coils yourself with magnet wire Hahaha, I'm not sure you could get it tight enough to a factory made coil.
