    I've seen some brilliant fixes, but the slip-ring fix eclipses those thoroughly. Plus that mechanical attachment can't but help additionally. I've watched quite a few of your videos and enjoyed them all. You're really good at this; not just the mechanics and creativity in presiding over seemingly unlikely resurrections, but the presentation as well. Clam, cool, and not goofy like so many Tubers, but with subtle humor. And your explanations and troubleshooting theories are educational. Plus I'm sure everyone greatly appreciates the regular close ups that so many seem to neglect, and that are critical to grasping the minutia of a repair process. I've been impressed by a number of your workarounds & fixturings to attain your goal, often way outside the box or the parts shed. If hoarding has some drawbacks, you seemed to have found the most constructive therapy for dodging or exploiting them - appears that it may be complicated only by a lack of real estate or slow curb-side sales at times. Thanks for all the additional effort it must take to keep the companion camera going & probably lots of editing/uploading time. I'd wager that many many viewers have benefited from all the hours of your endeavors you chose to share. And I'm still being surprised by your hunches that often grasp the mode of malfunction at the outset or allow a jump ahead in the usual TS process. Thanks a lot for your gallery of entertaining videos and I wish you many more neglected and abused contraptions finding their way to your restorative mission. -GSA

    So glad you swapped over to showing your work compared to your earlier videos. It's more relaxing just tuning out and watching the process than the after-the-fact stuff.

    I am really happy to see someone else fix the slip ring of a welder generator the way I fixed my neighbors. Am surprised that someone would buffalo you about something they know was bad to begin with. Good work too.

    Most people would have to dismantle the unit to even try and repair it. Nice job of reclamation! Actually, these days, hardly anyone would even try. No parts available? Scrap time. A method after my own heart. GREAT video, as usual.

    Nice fix, Bro. I was a welding machine repair tech here in N.E. Texas for 10 years (1990-2000) working for two companies in town (Airgas being one of them) and literally LOVED my job. That machine is a mid to late 80's model, not a 70's. If it has the original faceplate, you can look it up by its serial number. I actually didn't see many machines with the cracked commutator rings compared to the number of machines that were in circulation at the time, but I did see a few.

      Slikk Willie, with your experience repairing these, and your vast knowledge, could you help me trouble shoot my same welder? Mine no longer automatically idols down or up, the auto idol switch seems to no longer work. I would like to discover why, and fix it. first, can you tell me what the air gap should be between the piece of metal and the solenoid on the engine? And then tell me other things to check. I greatly appreciate your assistance!

      Slick Willie, and any one else, tell me your thoughts on brazing the slip rings instead of using the screws. I'm just curious if this would be practical and possible?

    OUTSTANDING ... Yet again, the mind boggles.. Despite the odd glues, and until good replacements to tighten up the slack on the main shaft arise, to buy or a physical donation apears ... jobs a goodun, again, brilliant work.

    Of course our fix at the time was to replace the rotor assembly as a whole as they were readily available to repair facilities. That process was a chore in itself. You were pretty ingenious coming up with the countersunk screws. Kudos for that. You seem to be exceptionally mechanically inclined already, but if ya run across something on your welder that stumps ya, I'd be glad to help ya out if I can.

    I picked up a weldon power 225 amp ,6000 watt power outlet,onan engine, from an auction with 50 hrs use $200 runs like a champ great clip as i checked the spit rings , it was made in 1985 i wonder if that year model has problems with split rings as the 1980 models.

    I just bought one for 200 bucks and have the same issue and it runs great. But was the work worth the time or should I but the armature with good sliprings and just replace the whole part or take the time and do the screw thing myself. The welding repair shop near me has a part machine and it has the whole part with good slip rings but the want 500 for the part. I wanna start doing so e welding repairs and this is my only machine atm

    I am aware that this video is an old one, but a gas tank off a Massey Ferguson 10 lawn and garden tractor is identical to the one on the welder. Also the exciter brushes on Lincoln 3 phase electric powered 400 amp or larger welder can be used as the brushes on that machine, those brushes measure approx. 3/8 by 5/8 x1-1/4 inches long but as I said approximate dimensions I am going by memory as it has been years since I have messed with any

    Excellent video! very helpful! Mine needs a muffler. I have seen several different styles of mufflers on these briggs engines, some small and round and others larger, almost tractor size. But I can't find any of those mufflers! Has any one have the part numbers for different mufflers that will fit onto the 16 HP briggs engine? Thanks

    Hey on your welder is there a wire comming from behind the engines flywheel going into the generator housing? my generator has no exciter and does not charge the battery their is no wires comming from behind the flywheel and I believe it was supposed to have a flywheel alternator to provide chargeing power and to excite the generator.

    I need info on the automatic idol control system, as mine is not working. It did work once, now it does not. SO what should the air gap be between the metal plate and the solenoid that is on the side of the engine? And how can i discover if the solenoid is working? How do I go about checking other areas related to the auto idol circuit? All help is greatly appreciated!

    Mustie I sure hope you fix this. I bought that welding machine so I could rebuild the Continental engine on my old Lincoln pipeliner need rebuilt. And after using this machine I wasn't in any hurry to finish the old pipeliner think it was a 62 model like I said in the last episode it was one welding son of a gun. I changed the oil on that every week because I worked 7/12 I believe I paid 22 or $2,300 for it

  • @localcrew

    Have you polished those rings any since the emery cloth repair polishing? I was on the Lincoln Electric website reading one of their manuals and they say not to use emery cloth. I think you're supposed to use paper and then leather or something. I just watched a slip ring polishing video and I think that's what he used. I think your brushes last longer with the fine polish action. I'll bet that ToBigWillie would know. He seems to be the man where welders are concerned! I subscribed, BTW.

    Groovy. No that is a valuable video. Fantastic job of "southern engineering". I definitly learned something. Those WPs have pc board, and other various parts that Lincoln discontinued supporting years go as with all the old models. So beware if you are looking at old WPs. If there isnt any voltage output, and If brushes are good it is high possibility it is the board.

    • @joeblow3934
      @joeblow3934 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The warning was for others looking at the wps peppered all over Craig's List etc. Any running unit that hasn't just been horribly abused is very valuable. Cause you can immediatly go into business with it. Lincoln's alternators (generators) are bullet proof, but pc boards, and moving parts have a life span. Though the pc boards should also be repairable; and engines of course. Rotors & stators (alternator) can be rewound also in rare shorted out units. But, getting copper, and brass to mate, and using brass screws then using emery cloth, and starter was flat top notch. Your wp will out live both of us im sure since you give it new life, and you're obviously very capable of any repair.

    anybody know how the engine disconnects from the armature because I was able to buy a new set of slip rings thru my welding supply store , $350 for the whole assembly but don't know how the engine separates. Any help appreciated

    • @Nortekj
      @Nortekj 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The engine to armature shaft most likely has a tube with an internal keyway and has set screws on both ends of the tube close to where the crankshaft and armature shaft meets. you may have to loosen the set screws on the blower fan to gain access the set screws
