      It happened during the second crusade, this loss is what prompted the third crusade (1189 - 1192).

    • @RealCrusadesHistory
      @RealCrusadesHistory  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Tomas Garza It didn't happen during any crusade. The Second Crusade took place 1147-49. The Battle of Hattin took place in 1187. The Third Crusade began as a response to Hattin, and lasted from 1189-1192.

      Thx for the correction I always imagined the Crusades were consecutive without gaps in between.

    Everything was going really well for the Crusaders and the Kingdom of Jerusalem. Even against Saladins numerically and powerful muslim Armies. But, when the foolish act at Hattin totally wiped out the Christian Field Army in one great swoop the Kingdom was unable to recover. Only Crusader Guards were left to defend the fortifications as there was no reserves or reinforcements anymore anywhere and in turn Saladin was able to take out every city town and fort and lay siege without even worrying about any counter attacks or relief forces.

    What was that grandmaster thinking? Decisive action is one thing, but who would think it's a good idea to march an army-many of whom would have been wearing metal armor- through a desert to fight an army?

    We think Count Raymond was only thinking of the good of the Kingdom when he said "Sacrifice Tiberius to save Jerusalem" not letting personal feelings for the wife get in the way of his duty.
    But what if the plot twist was his wife was a huge spender who was driving him into debt and he was tired of her always comparing him to other Lords she could have married? So when Saladin arrives at Tiberius he was like, _"Oh no.....what ever shall I do?"_
    So he could get rid of a nagging wife and still look like the brave loyal soldier willing to do what it took for the good of the Realm

      Its bs. Up to Hattin, Saladin was unable any of major major Latin castle (only Vadum Jacob that was unfinished and then after an earthquake) - so the lady in Tiberias Castle, one of the biggest, was quite safe.

    If the Crusader Armies had not foolishly marched out to fight at Hattin in the heat of summer with no water source, they wouldn't have lost their army and left Jerusalem undefended. It was a horrible strategy, one that Balwin IV would never have made. They were never able to retake Jerusalem back until they negotiated a treaty in early 13th century to occupy Jerusalem.
