  • So this is just a video documenting the process of building this bbq/food smoker! It has been around 2 weeks maybe more working about an hour or two a day, this has been a great project that will be very useful to have. We will be able to smoke the fish that we catch from our kayaking trip and we can BBQ. Thanks to matt for helping out with a couple of things liike the tray for the BBQ and some of the last little bit of lifting. It will probably make for some future videos as the door needs to be added and there could be some smoking tutorials to come, hope you enjoy the video though.

    Cool smoker. Reminds me of back in the old days, we built one out of an old refrigerator, 1/2 steel barrel, some scrap sheet metal and a pipe for the smoke to pass through. We smoked a lot of turkeys, meat and fish. Happy cooking, Chefs .

    Great brickwork. You guys paid attention to the aesthetics and it shows. For future reference the base of the smoke chamber needs to be higher than the firebox. And the smoke chamber needs an elevated exhaust above the cap/ceiling of the smoke chamber to create proper draw and air flow from the firebox. So a chimney type flue is required. And aluminum doesn’t mix with fire and cooking unless it’s rated for food prep. Other than that you guys make a challenging diy project look easy!! Congrats.!!!!🎉🎈🍾🎊

    Fire chamber should have been set at a lower height and the smoking chamber should have a chimney which would help create draw.

    I'm not criticizing at all, Excellent effort, terrible design. There is an easy fix to this without destroying all of your hard work. I would keep the fire box side as a grill, take the crossover tube out and build another fire box on the smoker side and use it as a stand alone smoker. Proper venting and this would be an awesome looking and functional Smoker. I have built many smokers and I find most people over think the basics of how a smoker actually works. Keeping it simple almost always works better in the end. Awesome looking set up and a great project idea!!!!! Nice Job!!!

    Fix the poor air flow by priming the smoke chamber. Prime it by heating it up first with some charchoal/small fire. This will create a suction from the smoke chamber and positive air flow. Just like a vertical chimney and fire place. The flue door needs the chimney primed in the same way!

    • @johnlugaresi7599
      @johnlugaresi7599 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Note: meat chamber (left side) needs priming first. Sorry I referenced both as smoke chambers.

    The harth should have been built on 3 causes of bricks with an air vent and chamber running directly underneath the fire for great air flow and a vent controller at the entry. The air would flow so much better

    smoke chamber pipe has too low of an angle on it. when he puts a door on it he will get no air flow therefore no low amount of smoke.

    • @jsaoutdoors
      @jsaoutdoors  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Fair point, although when we have tested the smoker and used it it has been fine in fact it has been better than fine bringing more than enough smoke through, we have used/tested it many times and as far as I am aware we have had no problems but we will be sure to keep an eye on that! How is the concrete slab on the fire chamber holding up to the heat. I've built one with a concrete slab covering the fire chamber and my friend said concrete can explode or deteriorate under the heat. If yours is holding up I know I don't need to worry.

    • @jsaoutdoors
      @jsaoutdoors  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      We haven't had any Issues at all with deterioration, It is totally up to you what you use, It might be worth it to use something different for the peace of mind. If you are going to be using it very often you might see different results regarding the wear and tear of the materials used. Sorry for the late reply!

    Did you find a solution to the smoke leaking out of the door?
    I'm thinking of doing something like this next year, and wondering if fire rope would work?
    Also what temperature are you aiming for in the smoking compartment?
    Very nice job!

    • @jsaoutdoors
      @jsaoutdoors  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hey, I am sorry for the late reply. I havent been on my account in a while. Firstly what door do you mean? I am assuming you mean the little black one where you put the chippings into, for that I think we kept the tape on because it works for the time being. I am personally not too clued up about fire rope or things like it but I am sure it is worth a try! The temperature that we want to achieve is probably high 20's low 30's (°C) because that is the best for smoking the fish we intend to smoke, thanks for your comment and if you want to see some more somking videos let me know :)

    • @duanemassey4560
      @duanemassey4560 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That was the door I was thinking of.
      I'm not sure if it is fire rope, it's what's used for log burners, thought it may do the trick on something like this?
      would be good to see the project in action after it being up for a while!
      is there anything that you would do different if you was to do this again?

    • @jsaoutdoors
      @jsaoutdoors  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I will have to look into the rope situation maybe it could work out for the best!
      Like I said I will try and get some more smoker videos out because we might be adding a fan system so all the smoke will be forced into where the fish is getting smoked so no smoke is wasted If that makes sense!
      Honestly there wouldnt be anything that we would do differently everything went well and went to plan and since it all works perfectly nothing jumps out as something we would do differently! Thanks for your comment!
