    This scene demonstrates a key difference between Jesse and Walt in that the former is quite clearly traumatised by the killings/disposal and wants to connect to the latter about it in order to cope. Walt on the other hand is confused as to why that would be necessary perhaps either because he is sociopathic or because he's already started developing a split personality to detach from his actions.

    Of course everyone loves the subtle change in Walter from loving husband and father to monstrous drug kingpin. What's equally cool is how they simultaneously demonstrated the constants of his personality that drove him through all of those changes, such as the deep scars on his pride as an alpha breadwinner caused by his schism from Elliot, Gretchen and Grey Matter. Any time this old wound gets irritated, Walter's brilliant and calculating nature gives way to the pride and spite that usually ends up being the cause of all his problems.

    In the beginning of BB I always felt like Walt was the sensible one and Jesse was the loose canon who will screw things up but soon enough Walt descended into madness as Heisenberg and Jesse became the sensible and compassionate one. Walt did many bad things throughout the series but I knew he was irredeemable when he poisoned Brock.

    • @mechadoggy
      @mechadoggy ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Walt was already irredeemable when he caused Jane to die and emotionally manipulated Jesse’s guilt about it into thinking for the next 3 seasons that Jesse was at fault for her death. From a utilitarian perspective, at least with Brock, no permanent damage, maiming, or disability actually happened. I’d much rather that Walt poison (but not kill) 10,000 children with ricin in a similar manner to Brock if that would prevent all the other innocent deaths Walt is responsible for.

    • @Sernival
      @Sernival ปีที่แล้ว +8

      @@mechadoggy Walt told Jesse it wasn't his fault. He let Jane die because she was trying to take his family's money in addition to ruining Jesse's life with her own addiction. This was suggested in the bar scene where he and Jane's father talk. Not so simple as you make it. Poisoning Brock is pretty bad though but he becomes incredibly desperate to win Jesse so he can kill gus. Truth be told they would have both died if Jesse wasn't being emotional about teaming with Walt.

      That, or Walt does understand what Jesse needs here but is deliberately avoiding that conversation in order to bury his own guilt about the situation. If Walt indulged Jesse here and talked about it like a proper mentor would, then maybe Walt’s own conscience would have been preserved.
